‘Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash’ coming up at Florida Rep

Florida Repertory Theatre’s 25th anniversary season continues with “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash,” created by Richard Maltby Jr. and conceived by William Meade. The production runs in the Historic Arcade Theatre from March 24 through April 23, with discounted previews March 21-23. Tickets can be purchased online at www. floridarep.org or by calling the box office at 239-3324488 or toll-free at 877-7878053. Audiences are encouraged to book early because ticket prices increase with demand, and tickets for the show are selling fast.

“Ring of Fire” brings the iconic music of Johnny Cash to life through music and story. The production includes more than two dozen classics like “I Walk the Line,” “Everywhere Man,” “Folsom Prison Blues” and “Ring of Fire.”

Producing artistic director Greg Longenhagen says, “‘Ring of Fire’” is a crowd-pleasin’, foot-stompin’ celebration of the man in black and the music that made him a legend. Using the Cash songbook, the musical tells a fascinating story of love and faith, struggle and success, rowdiness and redemption, and home and family.”

The production stars returning guest actors Matt Cusack and Armando Gutierrez (“Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story”), along with Maggie Hollinbeck, Allison Ann Kelly, and Larry Tobias making their Florida Rep debuts.

The ensemble cast all play multiple roles and multiple instruments to paint a musical portrait of the American music legend. Florida Rep associate artistic director Jason Parrish will direct the production and is rejoined by members of the creative team who worked on last season’s record-breaking production of “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story,” including musical director Matt Cusack, set designer Bert Scott, choreographer Amy McCleary, and stage manager Ruth E. Kramer, plus costume designer Kim Griffin (“Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help”), lighting designer Tyler

M. Perry (“West Side Story”) and sound designer Katie Lowe (“On Golden Pond”).

“Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash”

was adapted from the Broadway production by Richard Maltby Jr. and Jason Edwards and includes orchestrations by Steve Bishop and Jeff Lisenby with additional arrangements by David Abbinanti.

“Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash” is exclusively sponsored by Ellie Fox.

Single ticket prices for “Ring of Fire” start at $69/$63 for regular performances on March 24 through April 23.

Discounted preview tickets ($39/$35) are available March 21-23.

Curtain times are Tuesday – Saturday at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., and 8 p.m. for the opening night performance on Friday, March 24.

Florida Rep’s parking lot opens two hours before each performance and offers guests free parking across the street from the Arcade Theatre.

Florida Repertory Theatre celebrates 25 years of producing professional, live theatre in the Fort Myers River District.

Performances are held in the Historic Arcade Theatre and the ArtStage Studio Theatre on Bay Street between Jackson and Hendry Streets.

Hurricane Ian Update: Florida Rep suffered damages from the storm; however, the Historic Arcade and ArtStage Studio theaters have been remediated and repaired and are presently welcoming audiences.

Johnny Cash lives in Florida Rep musical 'Ring of Fire': 5 things to know

Published 5:02 a.m. ET March 23, 2023 Updated 9:18 a.m. ET March 23, 2023

“I Walk the Line.” “Get Rhythm.” “I’ve Been Everywhere.” “Folsom Prison Blues.” And, of course, "Ring of Fire.”

You’ll find those songs and about 30 more Johnny Cash hits in Florida Repertory Theatre’s new jukebox musical, “Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash.”

The Fort Myers show tells the story of the Man in Black mostly through his songs — iconic country standards that still resonate today, two decades after Cash’s death in 2003.

“It’s like a celebration,” says director Jason Parrish. “It’s a celebration of the music and a celebration of his contribution. And it sort of tells his story along the way.”

The musical opens Friday, March 24, and continues through April 23. Here’s what you need to know about “Ring of Fire.”

Florida Rep's new season:Hank Williams, a Christmas mash-up and more

After Ian:Hurricane waves breached Florida Rep, and she filmed it all. Now the theater is recovering

“Ring of Fire” is more like a concert than a straight musical

Love Johnny Cash’s songs? That’s a good thing, because this show is absolutely packed with them.

The musical’s 33 songs include everything from ‘50s and ‘60s hits “Get Rhythm,” “I Walk the Line” and “Folsom Prison Blues” to ‘90s comeback tunes “Delia’s Gone” and “I’ve Been Everywhere.”

LIFE

“I think there’s something like 20 songs in the first act, alone,” Parrish says.

The show has some dialogue, and the singers/actors represent the late Cash and his wife, June Carter Cash, at various stages in their lives, such as fighting addiction, falling in love and flipping off the Nashville music establishment.

Most of the story, however, is told through Cash's country, gospel and bluegrass songs. "Folsom Prison Blues" takes on his prison experiences; "Cocaine Blues," his drug problems; "The Old Rugged Cross," his Christian faith; and "Ring of Fire," his love affair with June Carter Cash.

“It starts in Arkansas with his childhood, and you sort of hear the music that made him,” Parrish says. “And then we go into the stuff he’s really known for, the contemporary stuff, the prison tours. So there’s a little bit of everything.”

Actor Matt Cusack’s favorite songs are the ones he performs with the character June Carter Cash, including “Jackson” and “If I Were A Carpenter.”

“A lot of Johnny’s stuff is pretty serious and dark," Cusack says. "And it seems like June was kind of like the light in his life, so those songs are fun and they’re playful.”

Everyone plays musical instruments in “Ring of Fire”

The five-member cast is made up entirely of actor/musicians. So they’re acting. They’re singing. And they’re playing a variety of musical instruments onstage, too.

“We all kind of cover a bunch of different instruments,” says Cusack, who plays young Johnny Cash and also serves as the show’s music director. “When we were going through the casting process, versatility was of the utmost importance. …

“That means everybody’s got to wear multiple hats, and I’m pretty sure everybody plays everything at some point. … I think everybody had to play four or five different instruments.”

That’s why the Arcade Theatre stage is scattered with musical instruments for the show, including drums, acoustic and electric guitars, a dobro, a piano, an upright double bass, an autoharp and two banjos. Plus four harmonicas tucked away in the actors’ pockets.

“When people walk in, they’ll see instruments everywhere, chairs hanging on the walls, instruments hanging on the walls,” Parrish says. “Because I didn’t want this play to stop.

“I want this to keep moving. So it just moves seamlessly from one thing to the next.”

The actors are even busier than usual

Most productions of “Ring of Fire” have eight, 10 or more actors. The Florida Rep show has five — so the actors have even more songs to sing than usual.

“Our production is more like an acoustic chamber version,” Parrish says. “That doesn’t mean we don’t have electric bass and we don’t have electric guitars and drums and a piano. We rock out. It rocks.

“But it’s more like a company of actors honoring Johnny and celebrating his music and his roots."

“Ring of Fire” isn’t a tribute act

Sure, the show itself is a tribute to the late, great country star. But the actors aren’t necessarily trying to mimic Cash's look and mannerisms onstage.

They’re not meant to look exactly like him, Parrish says. But they do embody Cash slightly more than previous versions of the show.

“We’ve tried to infuse a little bit more of first-person storytelling,” Cusack says. “Traditionally, it’s done where everyone is kinda retelling his story, but no one really is the person.

“We’ve tried to put a little more of that back into the show, and I think we’ve found some clever ways to do it.”

That distinctive Johnny Cash voice, however, was crucial. So the show cast people who could hit those deep notes in his vocals.

“With any of these shows … you don’t want to impersonate them,” Parrish says. “You’re not doing a tribute act. You’re really paying tribute to their music, if anything else.

“But you can’t do it justice without trying to live in the vocal style. So I think people are definitely going to enjoy hearing Johnny’s sound.”

Rock and country musicals are Florida Rep crowd-pleasers

Florida Rep had a big hit on its hands in 2019 with “Million Dollar Quartet,” the musical based on a famed Memphis recording session with music icons Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley

And the hits kept coming with more rock and country musicals at the downtown theater.

“Audiences are telling us by ticket sales that they want to see these musicals…” Parrish says. “‘Million Dollar Quartet’ broke all the records.”

After that show, Florida Rep followed up with last year’s Buddy Holly musical “Buddy” and now “Ring of Fire.”

“There’s an Americana songbook that we’re getting our way through,” Parrish says. “Johnny Cash’s stuff is sort of the next story we wanted to tell, and it’s another way for us to showcase some really amazing actor-musicians.”

Parrish calls “Ring of Fire” a nice transition after the more rock-focused musicals “Buddy” and “Million Dollar Quartet.” And it’s already shaping up to be a hit, too.

Hurricane Ian fatigue might have something to do with that, too, he says.

“We can tell from the excitement about it at the box office that people are looking for an escape,” he says. “They want something else to do and think about for two hours so they can just forget about insurance adjusters and contractors and things like that.”

ARTS COMMENTARY

Hard times and heaven: ‘Ring of Fire’ blazes at Florida Rep

Three chords and the truth.

That’s the basic description of country music.

And that’s what Johnny Cash wrote and performed: songs that are pure and simple and from the heart.

“Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash” (at Florida Repertory Theatre through April 23) is a tribute to the Man in Black.

This jukebox revue features a five-person ensemble — three men and two women — who take turns portraying Johnny Cash or members of his family.

Heck, there are times when the audience spontaneously sings along, and each of us is Johnny Cash too.

Cash was an Everyman who sang about love and loss and grief, hard times and heaven. He sang of traveling and prison and of killing a man in Reno, “just to watch him die.”

He was a religious man who sang spiritual songs and hymns but didn’t shy away from the gritty side of life.

He was country, he was rock, he was gospel. His songs also included shades of bluegrass and rockabilly.

Whether you’re a long-time fan of Johnny Cash or just have a glancing knowledge of his music, “Ring of Fire” is an entertaining and engrossing show.

The setting (by scenic designer Bert Scott) is a rustic, empty concert stage with wooden walls decorated with straightback chairs and guitars. The multi-layered stage house various instruments, trunks, mic stands and amplifiers.

Larry Tobias opens the show by walking out and sitting at the upright piano, which is centerstage and on a turntable. In his black outfit and silver hair, he bears a resemblance to the iconic singer in his later years. Tobias often delivers his songs in that half-talking, half-singing style Cash sometimes demonstrated.

But it’s when performer/music director Matt Cusack opens his mouth and sings that you sit up and take notice, because he plumbs those down-in-the-depths, roll-around-in-the-deep, low register we associate with Cash.

But every performer in this show is a new revelation. They’re all multi-instrumentalists, moving with ease from guitar

to drums to piano. Skilled accompaniment also includes banjo, mandolin and even an autoharp.

Early songs in the first act include “Country Boy,” with a propulsive beat and Maggie Hollinbeck, an original member of the band Ramblin’ Rose, delivering a sassy and sultry “While I’ve Got It On My Mind.”

The musical was created by Richard Maltby Jr. and conceived by William Meade, adapted from the Broadway production by Jason Edwards and Mr. Maltby.

Jason Parrish directed this production, and while the music and tone of the show differ from last season’s wildly successful “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story,” it’s just

as much fun.

“Ring of Fire” ebbs and flows more, though, as it includes two slower Kris Kristofferson songs: “Sunday Morning Coming Down” and “Why Me.”

Armando Gutierrez, who is often on drums, sings “Dirty Old Egg Sucking Dog,” a novelty song, milking the laughs.

Allison Ann Kelly, who tours nationally as June Carter, portrays her to a T in this show.

She has a spark and a certain ineffable quality that makes the audience love her; you can see why Cash was so taken with her.

She’s formidable on her own, but when Mr. Cusak joins her, the musical sparks fly off the stage.

(Though I did miss the inclusion of “Jackson” at the end of Act I. Ms. Kelly and Mr. Cusack perform it in Act II.)

Costume designer Kim Griffin provides some great outfits, despite the limitations placed upon her. June Carter Cash has an outstanding scarlet gown that sparkles in the spotlight.

All the favorites are here: “I’ve Been Everywhere,” “Going to Memphis,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “I Walk the Line,” “A Boy Named Sue,” and of course, the song the show is named after, “Ring of Fire.”

The show speeds along, like a runaway train Cash might sing about. The five highly talented performers trade instruments and sing together in different configurations, with each one having a turn in the spotlight. And the times they sing a ccapella, harmonizing, are just heavenly. Unfortunately, the playbill doesn’t provide any information on who performs or sings lead on which songs, only a list of

song credits for copyright purposes.

Be forewarned: the lighting (by Lighting Director Tyler M. Perry) is extremely dark and moody at times. Perhaps it’s more effective if you’re sitting very close, but at times I wished for just a little more light.

The musical revue tells the story of Cash’s life, while also re-enacting out scenes from it. Be forewarned: in Act I, the ensemble performs “Five Feet High and Rising,” as a young Cash, his siblings and parents. I admit, to hear this song about flooding just six months after Hurricane Ian — in a theater that actually suffered flood damage from multiple feet of rising water — was difficult. The emotional tone of the audience seemed to change, and I noticed some theater-goers wiping tears from their eyes afterwards.

The show tells the basics of Cash’s life, and doesn’t overlook his struggles with alcoholism and pills. It doesn’t deal with the cover songs he recorded near the end of his life, his “American Recordings” with producer Rick Rubin.

“Ring of Fire” at Florida Rep sets the stage aflame with talent and music. A whirlwind ride of a show, it’s a fitting tribute to Johnny Cash. ■

Station’s Buck Island Ranch. This working beef-cattle operation and research laboratory in Highlands County has an apple-snail invasion. The site contains over 600 wetlands interspersed within more than 10,300 acres of grasslands.

“This is a comprehensive study where we focused on several understudied areas in apple snail research simultaneously,” said O’Neil. “We looked at how invasive snails affect the ecosystem as a whole and how it functions, which was obviously harder to capture but in many ways is lacking from other work and is extremelyvaluablewhenlookingatinvasive species’ widespread impact.”

Researchers used white trash cans to hold soil, water, plants and apple snails collectedfromthesitetocreateawetland environment mimicking the field site’s conditions. The team divided experiments into two invasion treatments, one containing apple snails and another devoidofapplesnails.Theycreatedtwoadditional land management treatments, one characteristic of intensively managed wetlands and the other semi-natural wetlands.

They collected snail, soil, water and plant measurements. Scientists then compared how the presence of snails altered plant, soil and water responses compared to treatments without snails and how these differed in two types of wetlands.

“Overall,wefoundthatinvasivesnails

substantially decreased above-ground biomass and vegetation cover and exhibitedpreferentialfeedingonwetlandplant species,” said Qiu. “Snails also increased waternutrientssuchascarbon, nitrogen, phosphorous and dissolved solids.”

Wetlands come in many forms, includingfreshandsaltwatermarshes, wet prairies, cypress domes, steep heads, mangrove swamps and more. They provide a web of vital functions, including filtering impurities from water, storing water to reduce flooding, storing carbon and providing ideal habitats for many plants and wildlife species, including birds, fish and reptiles.

Apple snails can grow up to six inches high and are found in freshwater lakes, rivers, streams, ponds and ditches throughout Florida. Where they’re in abundance, they have crossed into wetlands.

While they spend most of their lives underthewater, theylaytheireggsabove the water line. It is no longer unusual for residents to come across bright pink egg clusters on vegetation and other hard surfaces like pilings, culverts, bridges and coastal seawalls. Each cluster contains between 500 and 700 eggs.

The species was first introduced in Florida through the aquarium trade in 1989 in Palm Beach County and has since become established throughout most of the state. There are apple snails from Miami-Dade County to as far northeast as Nassau County, and as far west as Okaloosa County.

WINE

Rolling out the used whiskey barrels

A few years ago, a new trend in winemaking emerged, and it’s started to gain a lot of traction … and attention. Some winemakers have begun to age their wines in used Bourbon whiskey barrels. They call it “cross-aging.”

The venerable oak barrel plays a critical role in the way wine ages and tastes. There are dozens of ways winemakers can use oak to flavor and “season” wine, but until now they’ve mainly stored and aged their wines in new or used French or American oak barrels. But apparently, this new trend of putting red wine in used whiskey barrels opens a new world of flavors and textures. And this is no “underground” phenomenon. Even major wineries like Mondavi and the Australian Jacob’s Creek are doing it.

White wines are also getting the treatment, being aged in barrels that formerly contained tequila or other clear spirits. And the situation gets more interesting from there.

Jeff Kasavan, cellarmaster at Cooper & Thief in Lodi, Calif. has over 30 years of experience as a winemaker and says that “cross-aging” is a relatively new trend because “Bourbon barrels present a new array of aromas and richness that you

can’t extract from traditional new oak barrel aging.” He also ages his white Sauvignon Blanc in used tequila barrels. “Sauvignon Blanc is one of my favorite varietals,” he says, “so I experimented with how the barrels could enhance the wine’s flavor experience. The acidity and citrus notes of Sauvignon Blanc are complemented by the subtle heat and toasty vanilla flavors imparted by the former tequila barrels.”

However, this technique may not work with all wines. The reds that Kasavan chooses to age in Bourbon barrels need significant tannin structure and flavor intensity. “For my red blend,” he says, “I use predominantly Merlot and Syrah complemented by Zinfandel, Petit Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon. They stand up the best to the big bold aromas and flavors imparted by the whiskey barrel aging process.”

All cross-aged wines start out in traditional oak barrels, but then winemakers like Jeff Kasavan and 1000 Stories winemaker Bob Blue put their wines in used whiskey barrels for an additional two or three months.

Blue agrees that richly-flavored wines are the ones to use for this technique. “Big, bold wines are best for the intensity of Bourbon barrel-aging,” says Blue, “which is why Zinfandel is our flagship varietal.” He continues, “Bourbon barrels are intense. Most wines can’t tolerate that kind of barrel intensity, but Zinfandel

seems to fit the bill just right.”

He also sees a bright future for wines made this way. “At first, we thought 1000 Stories would be more appealing to men, but women have become very enthusiastic. And the wine also cuts across various age groups, which shows that the category really has universal appeal.”

Discover the appeal for yourself with these new recommendations…

■ 1000 Stories Gold Rush Red California 2021 ($20) – Deep rich garnet in the glass with toasty oak and vanilla aromas. Charred vanilla and smoke flavors with blackberry, blueberry and 15% alcohol. Wine Whisperer rating: 89-90

■ 1000 Stories Zinfandel California 2020 ($20) – Contains about 19% Petite Sirah, so it’s big, bold, and concentrated. Some minerality on the nose, fresh black cherry that lingers on the finish. Smoke

and vanilla. Aged in old and new Bourbon barrels. WW 90

■ Cooper & Thief Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 2021 ($33) – With a whopping 16.5% alcohol, this is not a typical example of the varietal. Vanilla and smoke, with almond notes and a creamy texture. Long finish of oak, vanilla, and crème brulee. Blended with Colombard, Semillon, and “other whites.” WW 86-87

■ Cooper & Thief Red Blend California 2022 ($33) — Almost a Port, with 17% alcohol, this blend of Cabernet, Syrah, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah is all about smoke, vanilla, and deep black fruit. Nothing subtle about it, and lots more smoke and vanilla on the finish. WW 89

Ask the Wine Whisperer

There are so many shapes and sizes of wine glasses. What’s the best kind to use? – Peter S., Naples

Generally, larger glasses are better, because they allow you to swirl the wine more vigorously to release aromas and flavors. The glass should be thin, with a long stem, and should curve inward at the top. ■
