Back to the beer
Gutierrez spent 27 years in the Navy andbeganhome-brewinganddreaming of owning a brewery two decades ago.
That dream is in the form of a shiny and bright 10-barrel brewing system and his 12 beers on tap.
“We have seven or eight core beers,” he said. “Then we will experiment with small batch ones to keep it fresh and interesting.”
So far in the very early goings the Boat Day Blonde Ale, Suncoast West Coast IPA and Swamp Cat Pilsner have been best sellers.
Also popular are on tap collaborationswithFlyingEagle(kombucha),Kaleidoscope and Crazy Dingo Brewing (traditional ale).
There are also blood orange and New England IPAs, a hefeweizen, sangria, an elderberry cider and brown, American amber and hazy pale ales available.
A
long time coming
It’s taken a while to get Swamp Cat open.
The partners originally closed on it in

July2022andheldapost-HurricaneIan groundbreaking in June 2023.
“We lost a year with Ian,” Gutierrez said. “Then (Hurricanes) Milton and Helene again slowed down the process to get here. Opening this was one of the greatest moments of my life.”
“Everyone overuses the word resilience, but this is what resilience is,” Leger added. “We buckled down and kept moving forward.”
And they intend to keep moving forward with live music, trivia, brunch, Taco Tuesdays and more coming very soon.
“You can’t just open a brewery and have decent beer nowadays,” Gutierrez said. “You have to have more. People have been waiting a long time for this. Everything has to be fantastic to keep people coming back. We know that. Hopefully, this will become one of the best destinations in Southwest Florida.”
We’ll be here for it.

Teens, donuts and Taylor Swift A
‘yes day’ with my daughter led to lessons in teenager adventures and laughter

As a high school teacher and mother of a 16-year-old daughter, I spend a lot of time with teenagers. That said, I have never had any intention to try to be one again — that is until a student suggested that my next adventure should be what she referred to as a “yes day” with my daughter.
As I have since learned, a “yes day” consists of agreeing to go along with any activities, no matter how ridiculous your “yes day” partner suggests. This sounded somewhat alarming, but my lovely child promised to go easy on me and decided to let me tag along with her for a day and show me what the kids are into.
We chose a Sunday, and the first suggested activity was a drive-through trip to get coffee and donuts. Since she has the nice car and I have the hand-me-down, we took her car, but she asked me to drive — and pay, of course.
When I get in my car, I have a destination in mind, but I quickly caught on that there was no agenda other than the consumption of fuel and the collection of friends to whittle it away with. In that spirit, we bought extra donuts and picked up two of her friends to join us. Their effervescent chatter

brought a sense of joy to my heart — especially when I acknowledged the privilege of being welcomed into their world. Unfortunately, their musical tastes are not among my favorites. I remember when George Michael’s song “I Want Your Sex” was scandalous, but the songs on the playlist for the “yes” day would make a sailor blush. Because it was a “yes” day, I was instructed to roll down the window at stoplights and blast the preposterous cacophony across lanes of traffic while trying to shield my eyes from nearby drivers. But it was fun. They sang, I complained and we laughed with abandon so hard my sides hurt — at

my discomfort, at the lyrical nonsense and with the delirium of delighting in each other’s company.
After driving past the beach (which was nowhere near where we picked up her friends), we meandered through the pharmacy and stocked up on Celsius, Red Bull and gummy bears.
I was instructed to drive around the block three extra times before we got home so they could finish listening to a Taylor Swift song (a much-needed musical reprieve). Then, the girls set to work giving me their signature look of oversized false eyelashes. I was amazed at how well they
multi-tasked. The TV was on, phones were always nearby and we had a video phone call with four other friends, while all of them audibly and furiously typed Snapchat messages with their long, manicured fingernails.
All afternoon, they threw out ideas for things they wanted to do, but the day passed quickly despite the lack of direction. Honestly, I can’t even tell you what exactly we did. Finally, we drove to watch the sunset on the beach. Afterward, they declared that I was free from “yes day” obligations, and they dropped me off at home before driving off again.
As I reflected on the fleeting days of adolescence and the rites of passage into adulthood, it was clear that teenagers aren’t much different now than they were when I was younger, and they are kind, funny, clever and spontaneous — the perfect companions for adventure. I was reminded that the journey and the company I keep along the way are the whole point I set out in search of adventures in the first place. ■

At leastonceaweekinsummer, whileonce a month may be enough in the winter. Trynottocutoffmorethanathirdofthe blade with each cut. Also, keep the mower blades sharp. A clean-cut leaf blade will heal more quickly and thus lose less water than a shredded blade.
Proper fertilization practices can enhancethedroughttoleranceofgrass. All the drought conditioning accomplished by proper irrigation and mowing practices may be eliminated by excessive nitrogen fertilization. Shoot growth is enhanced and root growth reduced by excessive nitrogen.
Drought conditioning can only be accomplished by applying just enough nitrogen to obtain a small, but continuous, amount of growth. Lawns should never be fertilized to deepen the green color since St. Augustine grass is naturally more yellow-green. Potassium fertilization promotes increased root growth and thicker cell walls.
Drought tolerance is improved by applying potassium. Grass requires potassium in nearly the same amount as nitrogen, especially in sandy soils where both can readily leach out. In times of

h Swim only in designated swimming areas during daylight hours and without your pet. Crocodiles are most active between dusk and dawn.
h Never feed a crocodile – it is illegal and dangerous. When fed, crocodiles canlosetheirnaturalwarinessofpeople and instead learn to associate people with the availability of food. This includes indirect feeding, which can happen when feeding other wildlife or when improperly disposing of fish scraps.

drought a 15-0-15 lawn fertilizer would be preferable over a 16-0-8 analysis. In addition, the palms in your landscape require more potassium than nitrogen and would also benefit from the higher potassium content in your lawn fertilizer.
Pest control on lawns should be done with great care during the hot, dry spring months because pesticides can add extra stress through phytotoxicity (chemical damage to plants). Pesticides should never be applied on a preventative basis. When a pest problem is diagnosed however, it should be treated appropriately as necessary. Spot treatments can be as effective as treating the whole lawn. Be particularly watchful for insects and diseases which attack the grass root systems such as grubs or root rots.
If you have areas in your lawn which will not survive without extraordinary care consider using mulched beds, shrubs and ground covers which do not require supplemental irrigation.
Even if we begin to have a lot of rain, we should not squander our water. Prepare your lawn for drought and save our valuable water resources every day of the year.
