MAYOR FADNESS LETTER TO OUR RESIDENTS

H

appy new year! As we usher in a 2020, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the last decade and look ahead to what the future may bring. In the last decade we’ve seen Fishers establish itself as an entrepreneurial city with companies investing here and bolstering economic growth. We’ve welcomed tens of thousands of new residents and with that, the addition of new schools, infrastructure projects, and new neighborhoods. We’ve built the NPD Amphitheater, hosting thousands of residents and visitors every summer. And in just the last half of this decade we created a vibrant city center that continues to grow. While Fishers has seen success over the last decade, nothing is as important as the vibrancy and connection people feel when being part of the community. As we look at our future, my hope is that Fishers is a place where neighbors become more like family, friends are welcomed, and that we make Fishers a place you’re proud to call home.

FOCUS 2020 CELEBRATE NATIONAL DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH THIS MARCH WITH A FOCUS ON THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE

M

arch is Disability Awareness Month, and for the fourth year the Fishers Advisory Committee on Disability and the City of Fishers will host a month-long celebration to bring awareness to what life is like for those with physical and intellectual disabilities. The celebration consists of public events throughout the month that celebrate and explore the contributions of our community members with disabilities and the challenges that they may experience. This year’s theme FOCUS 2020 focuses on the past, present, and future of disability inclusion in Fishers. The community is invited to: • Join in Fun events that celebrate the contributions and talents of those with disabilities in our community. • Discover Opportunities and resources for education, inclusion, employment, accessibility, and accommodations. • Honor our local Caregivers and those who serve as direct support providers. • Explore how to Unite with community partners to support the needs of our residents. • Help acknowledge our Successes in making Fishers an inclusive, accessible community for all abilities. This year’s kickoff event will feature the stories of local caregivers and advocates Wilbur Sutton, Tim and Karen Russell, and Todd Root. The 2020 celebration will also recognize the 30th anniversary of the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). The Fishers Advisory Committee on Disability is chaired by Fishers City Councilor Cecilia Coble and co-founder of Outside the Box, Kelly Hartman. The committee serves as the community voice for those advocating for disability awareness.

Think Fishers

“FOCUS 2020 is an opportunity to learn about our disability history, celebrate the contributions of individuals with disabilities, and the strides made in the City of Fishers to build a more inclusive community, while learning about how we can work together to understand and solve challenges facing those with disabilities and caregivers,” said Coble. “Part of living in a vibrant and innovative community is evolving the way we see value in one another, without regard for the challenges we might have,” said Hartman. “This committee’s work has really advocated for disability inclusion and awareness in Fishers. While we have made great strides, we certainly still have work to do.” The work of the Fishers Advisory Committee on Disability has been reflected across the City of Fishers. In recent years, Fishers Parks & Recreation has made significant strides in this area. In 2018, the renovated Nickel Plate District Amphitheater debuted, which included expanded accessible seating. In 2019, assisted listening devices were purchased for Amphitheater events, and wheelchair accessible picnic tables were added. Last year the Parks & Recreation team partnered with KultureCity, an organization that strives to rethink accessibility to create a

KultureCity provided accessibility training to the Parks team, and the department now offers complimentary weighted lap pads and sensory backpacks to be checked out at events around the Nickel Plate District Amphitheater. The backpacks allow for full integration within the event, equipping an individual with a sensory processing disorder with the tools and resources to make the experience more comfortable. The Parks & Recreation Department also offers a Quiet Room at these events to provide a safe place for those feeling overstimulated or overwhelmed. During the annual Spark!Fishers festival, a sensory-friendly viewing location is available for the parade and fireworks. Parks & Recreation accessibility efforts haven’t been limited to special events. The department recently purchased a hiking stroller for their Nature First program to allow children with mobility challenges the opportunity to experience a hike with their classroom. In fall 2019, the department partnered with Make-A-Wish to bring an accessible Friendship Swing to Holland Park. The department is currently working on implementing a Parks-specific ADA Transition Plan to enhance accessibility at their parks. ishers Police Department’s CrimeWatch app, which has served residents since 2016, is now Relay. Relay, a community engagement and crime prevention app, has the same great features residents have used to report hundreds of incidents in Fishers, but now includes a streamlined user interface, and improved feedback and updates to residents who submit issues. More than 6,000 Fishers residents use the app to report nonemergency crimes to the Fishers Police Department. Relay is free to download via the App Store and Google Play. “The Fishers Police Department continues to make investments in technology to better serve our residents,” remarked Fishers Police Chief Ed Gebhart. “These investments are already paying off as our officers in the field receive timely detailed information that allow them to investigate matters more efficiently.” The re-launch of the app comes on the heels of this summer’s announcement by Fishers Police Department and HSE Schools for a new app-based tips program which replaced the former Text-a-Tip program. Residents can access the Fishers PD Crime Tips app via the App Store and Google Play. The Relay app allows residents to report suspicious activity or a neighborhood incident in any city across the country. In Fishers, when residents submit a report in the app, the information goes directly to officers on patrol. Residents may use the app to share photos of the situation, review a map of other reports in your area, receive real-time alerts of incidents in your area, and monitor the progress of your reported incident. For more information, visit relayapp.com and follow the Fishers Police Department on Twitter, Facebook, and Nextdoor.

REPORT IT Fishers residents now have several ways to report crime and suspicious activity directly to the Fishers Police Department: 1. Call or text 9-1-1 for all emergencies 2. Relay all non-emergency crimes and suspicious activity via the Relay app (former Fishers CrimeWatch app) 3. General crime tips or tips on criminal or disruptive behavior at HSE Schools can be submitted through the Fishers PD Crime Tips app.

FISHERS CARES ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH COUNCILMAN TODD ZIMMERMAN ORGANIZES INTER-FAITH COMMITTEE TO ADDRESS AND FIGHT MENTAL HEALTH STIGMA

I

n an effort to fight the stigma associated with mental health and provide resources for those in need, the Fishers Mental Health Initiative inter-faith committee launched Fishers Cares. This community-wide program unites businesses, places of worship, and nonprofits throughout the city to provide a safe space for those coping with stress, anxiety, or other mental illnesses. Councilman Todd Zimmerman started the inter-faith committee in 2015. According to Zimmerman, when he began the committee, the faith community had reached at least 40% of Fishers’ residents and he wanted bring faith leaders together to address the mental health stigma and encourage residents to open up. “We needed to get people interested and willing to be on the front line talking about anxiety and depression,” Zimmerman said. “We brought together faith leaders across all different faiths and it was a unique thing to see that happen. For them to stick together for four years has been a testament to this group wanting to help the community.” Fishers Cares allows adults to schedule an appointment at one of nine locations. Those who make an appointment are welcome to meet with a trained volunteer. The hour-long session allows community members to get away from stressors and speak without the fear of being judged. “I love that we made it this far. I just really hope that Fishers residents know it is okay to admit that you are stressed or have depression,” Zimmerman said. “If you start talking, there is a relief that follows. Once people start talking, other people share, too, and you won’t feel so alone.” Through his experience coaching, as Chaplin with the Fishers Police Department, and the passing of friends, Zimmerman has seen anxiety and depression first hand. He hopes older members of the community will set an example for the next generation. “If mom, dad, older brother, and sister show that it is okay to be vulnerable, then the young people will follow suit,” Zimmerman said. “I don’t want our kids dealing with stress through alcohol or substances, I want them to be able to share their feelings openly. That is my hope behind this program.” The Fishers Cares pilot launched at the beginning of November. The inter-faith committee will continue to develop and expand the program with hopes of facilitating the creation of a stigma-free home. Fishers Cares is not meant to replace licensed professionals or emergency services.

SAFETY FIRST FISHERS FIRE DEPARTMENT AND HSE IMPLEMENTS NEW FIRE SAFETY PROGRAM

F

or the 2019-20 school year, Hamilton Southeastern Schools and the Fishers Fire Department have partnered together to develop a fire safety curriculum with the help of the new Community Risk Reduction Specialist Lisa Wagner. As a licensed teacher working under the FFD, Wagner joined a task force to help develop a more effective fire training curriculum and now helps to implement the program at HSE elementary schools by teaching students across the district. Previously, the fire safety curriculum introduced students to the fire department’s safety trailer, but when both organizations realized students had little retention of fire safety rules, it was time to come up with a better solution. For Wagner, interacting with the community and witnessing the difference is its own reward. “This job is amazing because it is the best parts of teaching, but there is so much more that goes into it than just teaching,” she says. Wagner is a former middle school and preschool teacher, and her skills for teaching have developed the program into a more effective, data-driven curriculum. The new program offers two visits per grade level at each school every year, and the fire department is holding students accountable by actively engaging them and quizzing them on the fire safety objectives they learn at each visit. HSE and FFD are hosting safety initiative contests at the elementary schools as well, boasting an interactive, project-based reward that more closely involves all of the students and teachers. A more innovative reward system and a new curriculum guide made available to principals enforce

the notion that fire safety skills are longterm, necessary tools for everyday life. Elementary school education is just the beginning for Wagner. Ideally, she aims to expand her program to the entire district, providing some sort of message to every classroom in the district within the next five years. “My job is to put that knowledge out there for students,” says Wagner. She adds that knowing how to respond in an emergency or how to prevent accidental injury is imminent not just for families but for graduating high schoolers, many of whom will move out and experience living on their own for the first time within the next year. Through only the elementary schools, Wagner’s new program already demonstrates tremendous impact. Wagner says elementary students are eager to bring their new information home and present it to their families from all over Fishers, expanding the fire and accident safety education beyond the classrooms where students learn. The new fire safety curriculum is more effective for the community and for the schools, creating safer, more aware households in the district.

GLOBAL STUDIES PROGRAMS AT HSE TEACH ELEMENTARY STUDENTS ABOUT LANGUAGE & CULTURE

A

s Hamilton Southeastern Schools are expanding, so is their curriculum. This year, a wide range of Global Studies at elementary schools broadened the horizons of students’ learning and introduced cultural appreciation for students to practice in their daily life. Last year, HSE expanded their Global Studies program for the first time. The district hired three new teachers at Lantern Road Elementary, Thorpe Creek Elementary, and Geist Elementary Schools to teach students about world languages and culture. The first three teachers hired spoke Spanish, Farsi, and Mandarin; rotating through three buildings to teach one course at each school. This year, HSE expanded the program, overcoming challenges regarding elementary school enrollment and elementary teacher licensing. “It is really tricky to find people certified for elementary teaching and for language,” says Director of Elementary Curriculum Stephanie Loane. Currently,

four teachers rotate between seven schools, focusing on curriculum in culture, music, art, geography, and language in civilizations across the globe. The Global Studies teachers are certified elementary teachers specializing in Spanish, and they go between the elementary schools with the highest enrollment in the district: Hoosier Road Elementary, Thorpe Creek Elementary, Lantern Road Elementary, New Britton Elementary, Southeastern Elementary, Geist Elementary, and Sand Creek Elementary. Other than teaching students basic information about international cultures, Global Studies imparts the value of understanding multiple perspectives at a young age, when students are more energetic and less hesitant to learn new things. Students in a Global Studies class bring their new understanding of culture home, too. They sing traditional songs in different languages, create traditional snacks, and discuss what they learn with others in a way that healthily compares their own culture with an entirely different one. “They are really little people leading their adults in conversations about multiple perspectives and multiple ways of thinking,” says Loane. Right now, HSE is focusing on enriching the education of students and expanding this program to all thirteen elementary schools in the district.

FHS HOSTS SPEAKER THROUGH CURIOCITY EXECUTIVE COACH KELLY BYRD SPEAKS TO CLASSES AT FISHERS HIGH SCHOOL ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF JOB READINESS

W

ith the start of a new school year, English 12 classrooms at Fishers High School (FHS) are taking advantage of learning resources such as CurioCity, which connects classrooms to interested business and facilitates project-based learning . On September 23, executive coach Kelly Byrd, an internationally renowned speaker centered in Fort Wayne, IN, partnered with FHS, speaking to English 12 about the value of being direct when holding difficult conversations in the workplace. English 12 is a dual-credit English course offered to FHS seniors that focuses on SAT skills and workplace readiness. At the time, English 12 classes at FHS were working on a unit labeled “The Plan for Autonomy.” The unit focused on understanding and developing workforce skills, such as writing resumes, preparing interviews, and interacting positively with potential coworkers. As part of this unit, English teacher Philip Albonetti was originally looking to partner with a human resources representative at local construction company Hagerman. When they received his request, though, the company referred him to Byrd, with whom they had previous experience. Byrd typically works with CEOs and other executive leaders in the workplace to help develop the leadership skills that lead to an efficient workplace environment. At his visit, Byrd talked to students about the importance of being direct, open, and firm when partaking in difficult conversations with employees or coworkers. According to Albonetti, the function went extremely well. “You can tell that a speaker has connected with the audience if students are not looking at their phones and it is a quiet room.” Byrd explained the importance of work accountability and management accountability, sharing past experiences from when executives who failed to perform well lost their jobs and their sometimes million-dollar salaries. Hearing the message from an experienced coordinator intensified the impact for students, and the experience overall gave teachers a better understanding of skills their classrooms should focus on in order to succeed in the workforce. Thanks to CurioCity, Byrd was able to deliver a presentation to high schoolers for no charge. “People in the community are pretty eager to help out,” says Albonetti. CurioCity provides the opportunity for community members to step up and engage in fresh, innovative ways to help students grow. The English department plans to repeat the experience next year if possible. Albonetti says resources like CurioCity not only draw the community together, but provide students with valuable messages and skills in order to be successful and comfortable in the work force.

BROADENING THE STORYLINE CONNER PRAIRIE INCORPORATES AFRICAN AMERICAN SETTLEMENT INTO EXHIBIT

A

n anchor of the Fishers community and one of the most visited outdoor museums in the country, Conner Prairie is expanding its 1836 Prairietown exhibition to be more inclusive of the 19th century Midwestern experience. Funded by Lilly Endowment’s Religion and Cultural Institutions Initiative planning grant, Conner Prairie is creating a religious storyline that will be incorporated into the existing Prairietown experience and brings to life a composite of a 19th century African American settlement found in the Midwest. During this time, there were more than 300 Black settlements in the region. The new storyline is part of Conner Prairie’s initiative to reimagine its educational program to make it more inclusive to expanding communities around the region. “This will be an interpretative, educational experience different from the ones you know at Conner Prairie,” said Rich Cooper, Vice President & Chief Programs Officer at Conner Prairie. In 1998, Conner Prairie launched its interactive Follow the North Star program, which demonstrated the wide-ranging social

attitudes toward African Americans in preCivil War Indiana. However, as Cooper points out, guests had to self-select to participate in this experience, and this storyline was not widely represented in daily programming. “We want to talk about the Underground Railroad and the African American experience day to day, as part of our core programming,” said Cooper. In fall 2019, Conner Prairie hired Dr. Clarence G. Newsome as Curator of African American 19th Century Experience, a contracted position funded by the Lilly Endowment planning grant to help to build this new storyline. Dr. Newsome formerly served as President of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. He is a triple alumnus of Duke University and one of the university’s first African American scholarship athletes; former Dean to the School of Divinity at Howard University; previous President of Shaw University; and a Trustee of The Duke Endowment. Dr. Newsome has been busy researching over the past few months. Although still early in his research, Dr. Newsome has identified several key themes, including the migratory

Dr. Clarence G. Newsome, Curator of Conner Prairie’s African American 19th Century Experience movement of African Americans to the Midwest during the period, including a large number coming from northeast North Carolina and southeast Virginia; the role of the Declaration of Independence in inspiring African Americans to seek freedom and form settlements; and the role that various religious groups played in the lives of African Americans within these communities. Dr. Newsome has also discovered a personal connection to the story he is working to bring to life for Conner Prairie. “It just so happens that people in my family lineage were also part of this migratory movement to the Midwest,” said Newsome. “The Weavers settlement traces back to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in the early days of Colonialism. That name is part of my family line. I trace my mother’s line back to 1650 Lancaster County.” Newsome hopes to create an exhibition that is “compelling, powerful, and transformative of the way we see each other as Americans.” “There is a wonderful story to be told. It’s a story that benefits our nation,” said Newsome. The new storyline is expected to debut in 2021 or 2022.

A Founding Company Member at the Indianapolis Ballet, Lingner moved into The Depot at Nickel Plate with his wife in 2018. Later that year, he became one of the first seven members of the new Fishers Arts & Culture Commission. Over the past year, he’s worked with the other Commissioners to accelerate arts and cultural initiatives around Fishers, including updating the Community Art Master Plan, originally developed in 2014. “We’re working to use our resources responsibly and effectively to facilitate a higher quality of arts and culture in Fishers, and really take things to the next level,” said Lingner. Lingner grew up on the westside of Indianapolis by Eagle Creek. As a child, he practiced tap, jazz, ballet, and contemporary dance. He began his ballet career in 2009 when he joined the National Tour of Twyla Tharp’s Movin’ Out, dancing the principal roles of Eddie and James and making him one of the youngest performers to ever perform these roles. “That’s where it all changed for me,” said Lingner. “It was my moment of being touched by greatness and my standards changed forever. I really wanted to pursue ballet.” Since that life-changing moment in 2009, Lingner has danced with Cincinnati Ballet and toured with the company to The Joyce Theatre in New York City and the Kennedy Center. His musical theatre credits include Hairspray (Oasis of the Seas), Guys and Dolls (Flatrock Play House), and Jerome Robbins Broadway (The MUNY). As a producer, Lingner was nominated for a Tony Award as a Co-Producer for Broadway's On the Town and Best Show of 2016 for his production of the first Ballet Royalty Gala in Havana, Cuba. Now as a Founding Company Member of the Indianapolis Ballet, you can find Lingner performing this Valentine’s Day weekend at Newfields’ Toby Theater. The show, entitled Love is in the Air, features includes a red-hot duo of works with Rubies and Tango Forever, and a brand-new commissioned work with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. After living in Fishers for a little over a year, Lingner is enjoying getting to know the community, right from his home in the heart of downtown Fishers. “We’re at the epicenter of a lot of growth. I find that really inspiring and fun to be around, even if there is construction going on. It’s invigorating,” said Lingner. “We’re finding new things almost every weekend.”

The Qumulex team

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT LOCAL GROUP SPECIALIZES IN CLOUD-BASED SURVEILLANCE

A

midst the growing popularity of residential video surveillance apps such as Ring and Nest, commercial markets are now transitioning from on-premise video surveillance to cloud-based platforms as the industry finds itself disrupted by technology. As consumers utilize flexible and user-friendly security technologies in their homes, they have started demanding similar technologies in their place of work. Commercial security initially lagged in its transition to the familiar, user-friendly cloud-based security systems in comparison to other technologies. Taking advantage of the technology shift in the video surveillance market is Fishers-based Qumulex, a tech company specializing in a unified cloud-based surveillance and access control software for the commercial market. With a core leadership rooted in the video surveillance industry, President Dan Rittman and the Qumulex team were previously a part of two other surveillance companies, both taking advantage of technology shifts of the time. Perhaps the greatest differentiator between the Qumulex product and others available is the unified aspect of the software, allowing for a business’s surveillance and access control systems to work together seamlessly. “With no need to cobble together two disparate products to do those two functions, video activity can trigger access control actions, and vice-versa. Unifying the two functions provides greater on-premises awareness of what is going on,” said Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Tom Buckley. In addition to the unified component, the Qumulex software also provides both on premise on premises and cloud options,

mobile and desktop access, and an open architecture to support hardware from all major manufacturers. Shortly after its inception, Qumulex moved into the Indiana IoT Lab - Fishers - the first lab of its kind in Indiana - and has taken full advantage of the resources and synergy available between other tech startups located in the space. “The open concept of the Lab, combined with it housing other technology start-ups, means there’s always opportunity for collaboration, for technical discussions, and the like,” said Buckley. “Additionally, there are always other technical or entrepreneurial people coming through the Lab, whether for Meet-Ups, classes, demonstrations, etc., so we’re always networking and connecting with other entrepreneurial people in the Fishers and Indiana technology community.” Qumulex’s time in the IoT Lab has also provided flexibility and made the company’s rapid growth easy. Currently their team is operating with 17 employees; however, it plans to double its workforce by early 2021. “In our 12 months in the lab, we have expanded three times and are about to make it a fourth,” said Buckley. As Qumulex progresses in its impressive growth, and expands its customer base, the simplicity and ease associated with its product will continue to serve as a key selling point when targeting customers. “When our resellers and customers think about Qumulex, we would like them to think ‘easy’.  For resellers, easy to buy from and easy to install.  For customers, easy to use features that exceed their expectations,” said Buckley. A group of kids enjoying their time at Summer Camp

SUMMER IS COMING IT MAY BE COLD OUTSIDE NOW, BUT THE FISHERS PARKS & RECREATION TEAM HAS FUN TIMES AT SUMMER CAMP ON THEIR MIND

I

t’s during the winter months that things really heat up at the Parks office, as plans for the annual children’s recreational and nature summer camps are finalized and camp registration opens for the summer season. Each week this June and July, Billericay Park, Holland Park, and Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve will be bustling with little campers learning new skills. Last year, Fishers Parks & Recreation welcomed over 900 campers at 28 different camps. Like last year, camp registration will open after the first of the year. Fishers residents can register beginning January 13 at 8:30 a.m. and nonresidents can register starting on January 27. Each summer, the Department offers a fun lineup of engaging and vibrant full and half-day summer camps for children ages 4 to 12. There are also several unique activities from local organizations that the Department partners with. “Fishers Parks & Recreation’s summer camps offer something for everyone,” said Sarah Sandquist, Director of Fishers Parks & Recreation. “We really challenge ourselves to bring new and exciting themes to our camp lineup each week,

and we feel like we’ve upped the ante this summer with all of the fun we have in store.” Fishers Parks & Recreation Program Coordinator Adam Wagner’s main job duty includes managing all the summer camp programs that the city offers. This is his second summer with the department, and he’s already hooked on the excitement that camp brings each year. “My favorite part of summer camp is witnessing the unbridled joy and enthusiasm that campers and counselors experience while simply engaging in recreation,” said Wagner. “These programs provide the opportunity for kids to be kids, while getting them active and allowing them to unplug in the great outdoors.” One new feature that Wagner is looking forward to this year incorporates the city’s everyday heroes. “During the Soaring Superheroes camp at Billericay Park, the Fishers Fire and Police Departments and the Department of Public Works will show off their superhero skills while participating in activities with campers,” said Wagner. Another important aspect of the city’s summer camp program is being able to give back to the community. Fishers Parks & Recreation is proud to partner with HSE schools to offer free or reduced summer camp rates to HSE students enrolled in the free or reduced lunch program. “Through the generous efforts of the Fishers Parks & Recreation Foundation, we are able to offer partial and full scholarships to families in need in our community,” explained Sandquist. Check out the full lineup of summer camps on page 21 and learn more about scholarships and registration at playfishers.com/SummerCamp.

CITY HALL BRIEF RECYCLE YOUR TREE AFTER THE HOLIDAYS The City of Fishers offers the free Tree Recycling program sponsored by Sambol’s Tree Farm. Residents can drop off bare, live trees through February 1 at one of several park locations throughout the city. Learn more at fishers.in.us/TreeRecycling. NEIGHBORHOOD PARKING It’s snow season in Fishers! Please be sure to adhere to the parking ordinance and avoid parking your vehicle in restricted areas (i.e. in front of or immediately opposite a driveway, within 20 feet of an intersection, etc.) so that Fishers DPW can effectively plow our roads to keep them safe and clear! Not familiar with the ordinance? Check out the Municipal Code at fishers.in.us/CodeInfo. VIBRANT NEIGHBORHOOD MATCHING GRANT Apply for a grant to beautify your neighborhood! The new Vibrant Neighborhood Matching Grant combines the former Tree and Neighborhood Matching Grant programs. Both landscape and hardscape projects are eligible, and individuals and HOA’s can apply. Applications are due January 31. Learn more at fishers.in.us/MatchingGrants. CITY OF SERVICE AWARDS The City of Fishers will celebrate volunteers who have donated their time and talent to our community with the annual City of Service Awards on March 4. Know a great volunteer? Nominate a volunteer serving the Fishers area for this year’s nonprofit Volunteer of the Year award. Submit a nomination by January 24 at playfishers.com/Volunteer.
