rom a young age, Nekoda “Koda” Witsken was exposed to art in its various forms. With her grandfather as a cartoonist, her dad a landscape artist, and her mother attending art school, Koda was learning something new nearly every week. By the time she was a student at Hamilton Southeastern High School, Witsken’s passion for art was prominent. “I had amazing art teachers throughout high school and college,” said Witsken. “Angela Fritz is still a teacher at HSE and she is the reason that I went into professional art. I also had great people at Duke and Purdue University that helped me develop my painting, as well.”

LIVE | Think Fishers

After graduating high school, Witsken earned degrees in history and business, then worked in the corporate world for almost seven years. At the end of 2018, she moved back to Fishers to pursue her dream of becoming a full-time artist. “I moved back to be closer to my family and to take big chances,” said Witsken. “Once you travel the world, you appreciate how big the hearts are in Fishers and just how much the city is willing to invest in big ideas. I believe in this community and it believes in me, too.” Since returning home, Witsken has completed projects in almost 10 cities throughout Indiana and is almost completely booked with art projects for 2020. She looks forward to a summer filled with vibrant art projects, some of which will be completed with Croix, her twin brother. While sharing her talents with various communities, she hopes to break two commons myths about art: that it is too expensive to be an artist, and that artists should work for free. “Art is very accessible if you look in the right places. You can go to your local Arts Council, Nickel Plate Arts, High

Once you travel the world, you appreciate how big the hearts are in Fishers

Frequency Arts, and so many other art consultants,” said Witsken when discussing ways artists can pursue their passion. “I encourage residents to support their local artists. Art is an amazing investment because it boosts economics, impacts the community, and supports a living, breathing person.” The Yard at Fishers District is the latest location to feature Witsken’s talents. Rise’n Roll Bakery is home to three of her murals, which are displayed inside. This spring on Ikea Way, Witsken will begin a 30-foot by 9-foot mural titled Thanks for Being Weird with Me, which aligns with the entrepreneurial, spirited nature of the city. “This piece kind of goes back to why I moved back to Fishers,” said Witsken. “It is not often you find a community that will take weird, artsy risks with you. Fishers is uniquely poised right now to for us to really make this place our own, not just through visual art but though music, literature, sculpture, and more. I would hope to be the artist that helps piece this all together and I want to be a part of this vision any way that I can.”

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR:

LISA KNOWLES L

isa Knowles is an ambassador for giving back to your community. She’s involved in numerous community organizations and initiatives and believes there’s no better way to learn what’s happening locally than by getting involved. “If there’s something that you’re interested in, feel passionately about, or have a problem with, then the easiest thing you can do is just show up,” explains Knowles. “There’s monthly City Council meetings, meet your City Councilor events, and more. The more that you show up, the more opportunities present themselves.” Knowles has lived in Fishers for nine years, and calls the downtown Nickel Plate District home. When she moved to the area with her husband, who works for the Fishers Department of Public Works, she immediately sought opportunities to get involved in the community. She joined the City Government Academy, a program that gives a behind the scenes look at local government. Knowles also attended public meetings related to the development of the Nickel Plate District to stay up to date and make sure that her voice was heard. Currently, Knowles serves as President of the Fishers Parks Foundation—a volunteerrun organization that raises funds to support projects in Fishers’ parks. She also volunteers as Entertainment Co-Chair for the annual Spark!Fishers festival—coming up on June 26 and 27—and is part of the City Government Academy Alumni Group. “By volunteering locally you are able to experience an immediate effect on your community,” says Knowles. “It’s gratifying to be a part of things that directly impact my family and neighbors.” As President of the Fishers Parks Foundation, Knowles is working on a fundraising campaign to build an Angel of Hope memorial at Heritage Park. The memorial will serve as a place for people of any faith to grieve, remember, heal, and find

hope after losing a child of any age to illness, suicide, miscarriage, infant loss, or accident. The project was suggested by Fishers resident Holly Schwomeyer, and the Foundation is raising funds to build the memorial this year. Just like Knowles encourages residents to get involved with their local government, she also urges them to utilize local resources like the Fishers Parks Foundation. “If you have a project that you’re passionate about, the Foundation can help to bring your project to life,” says Knowles. What Knowles enjoys most about Fishers are the people, and more specifically, the different types of people who call our city home. “It’s rare to meet someone who’s unkind,” she explains. “Our neighborhood is very multicultural, and there’s so much diversity in our city. I enjoy meeting new people and learning their customs.”

Community members came out to give their input on the Age-Friendly Fishers Action Plan WORKING TO SUPPORT AND WELCOME ALL AGES

FISHERS: AGEFRIENDLY by Mia Morales

I

n 2018, Fishers was the first city in Indiana to be to join the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities, an affiliate of the WHO Global Network of AgeFriendly Cities and Communities. An Age-Friendly Community supports and values its citizens while actively engaging residents and addressing their needs. As part of this designation, the City was tasked with creating a three-year action plan for to improve livability in Fishers for people of all ages. To develop a three-year action plan, various Fishers residents united to create the Age-Friendly Committee and bring to life their vision of an inclusive community. “The Age-Friendly Fishers Action Plan is the next step in creating a vibrant community where all ages and abilities can thrive,” said Mayor Scott Fadness. “This project showcases how our community can come together to share ideas and work collectively to improve our city.”

The Age-Friendly Fishers Action Plan was finalized in December 2019 with the vision of Fishers becoming a place where residents are well-informed about available resources in order to live safely and independently as they age. Throughout 2019, the Age-Friendly Committee sought the opinions of Fishers residents to ensure the community’s needs were noted. Through public input sessions, a booth at the Fishers Farmers’ Market Freebirds Day, and an online survey, residents were invited to share their ideas and help to improve their city. “This accreditation is so important for any city, especially the City of Fishers,” said Jean Ross, owner of Kaybe.US and member of the Age-Friendly Fishers Committee. “We’re known as being such a young and entrepreneurial city, but we’re also starting to take care of our parents. Reaching out and collaborating with AARP on this initiative allows a collaboration to make sure our city is designed for anybody who wants to live here.” Data shows that community members are most concerned about transportation, housing, health, and communication. In order to carry out the vision, the City will implement five strategies and monitor the progress over the next three years. Fishers will strive to create innovative facilities, promote housing developments that allow residents to remain home as they age, develop age-friendly transportation strategies, simplify access to healthcare and other services, and make information more accessible. “I’ll be able to stay here with my three daughters,” said Fishers resident and AARP volunteer Tish Biggs, who also serves on the AgeFriendly Fishers Committee. “My husband and I moved here from Ohio to be in a community that supported people of our age. Age-Friendly Fishers means that we have a welcoming place to finish out our life.” By 2040, Fishers is expected to have more than 130,000 residents and the City wants to grow with its residents to ensure that all ages are welcomed. Age-Friendly Fishers seeks to improve the quality of life for residents of all ages and abilities by improving the communication of existing community resources, partnering and collaborating with community stakeholders, and advocating for infrastructure and public spaces that are safe, accessible, and equitable for all residents.

BUILDING A SENSE OF BELONGING FIDGET CLUB TEACHES MINDFULNESS, PROBLEM-SOLVING, & SELF-MANAGEMENT TO ELEMENTARY & INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS

W

hen you walk in, notice how the room feels as you take a seat.” These are the first words that students hear as they enter Fidget Club at Hoosier Road Elementary. The club, which meets every Wednesday during school, focuses on building mindfulness and self-management in elementary and intermediate students. Jeff Foutty, the school psychologist at Hoosier Road Elementary (HRE) and Riverside Intermediate (RSI), initiated Fidget Club in 2017. There are currently three Fidget Clubs – two at HRE and one at RSI. This year, placement in the club was determined on students’ self-evaluation of their emotional wellbeing from specific questions on the 2019 Panorama Sense of Belonging survey. “Fidget Club represents a building-wide initiative for positive attention towards students that often receive very little,” says Foutty. “There are kids that need these kinds of experiences.” Students in Fidget Club meet twice a day. During the morning meeting, they practice short meditations and engage in conversation to build relationships, encouraging skills such as politeness, eye contact, and self-expression. Students also collaborate and discuss their ideas for developing their school’s Fidget Wall. The Fidget Wall, created by Foutty and a group of students two years ago, is a location at the school where students have access to sensory items such as fidget spinners, magnets, and unique contraptions. Foutty and the students recognized a need for emotional regulation in students coinciding with the often-misused personal fidget items. The Fidget Wall provides a space for students to correctly utilize these tools while they are attached to the wall. When Fidget

Club meets a second time in the afternoon, students design and build their ideas for the wall. With the assistance of Foutty and the school counselor, these students learn skills to safely operate heavy machinery and build the wooden structures themselves. Fidget Club and its Fidget Wall offer students a chance to engage in specialized learning that builds relationships. An outdoor sensory area at HRE proves the growing impact of Fidget Club within the schools, but Foutty also plans to extend it throughout the school district. Foutty says the practice of implementing student sensory areas not only benefits students at the school, but enables those in Fidget Club to build problem-solving skills, selfesteem, and a sense of belonging at school.

CURIOCITY CONNECTS LEARNERS WITH LEADERS THE CITY OF FISHERS TEAMED UP WITH SIXTH GRADERS TO DISCUSS DEVELOPMENT OF 96TH STREET AND ALLISONVILLE ROAD

W

hile studying the themes of geography and environmental impact, Emily Stout was looking for a real-world example to enrich the learning experience for her sixth-grade students at Riverside Intermediate School. Utilizing the CurioCity portal, Stout found a project-based learning opportunity involving the future development of the 96th Street and Allisonville Road intersection. Stout expressed interest in this opportunity and was able to connect with Megan Baumgartner, the Director of Economic Development for the City of Fishers. Baumgartner visited and spent 45 minutes with each class describing the history of the site and the challenges associated with it that include nearby wastewater treatment plants and a graveyard. Baumgartner says she was impressed by the students’ engagement in the topic. “The students were immediately interested in how to make the site work as it currently stands,” adds Baumgartner. “They asked really insightful questions about sustainability and keeping trees in the area.”

fishers.in.us

Stout was also excited about her students’ reaction to the project. “It was wonderful to see my students all in. They asked excellent questions and it created an opportunity for them to get involved in something that directly impacts the city in which they live,” Stout said. After Baumgartner’s visit, students began researching and creating a proposal for development of the site that they presented to their class. According to Stout, “It truly was a great experience and I am hoping to use CurioCity in the future.” CurioCity does not just benefit teachers and students. Baumgartner believes that all organizations can gain from participating in the CurioCity program. “It helps you see your work through a different lens. The kids were so engaged and excited! I fed off of their excitement to come up with ideas,” said Baumgartner. To begin your experiential learning journey, visit curiocityhub.com. Q&A FAVORITE RESTAURANT: My husband and I frequent Wild Ginger for sushi, and my kiddos love Riviera Maya (used to be across the street from my old store) for Mexican food, or Samanos for the best tacos! BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT:

ROMAN & LEO A

fter Fishers resident and business owner Angela Castelli gave birth to her first son in 2010, she found herself on the hunt for unique and trendy boys clothing. “Everywhere we went, we were asked where we found Roman’s clothes, and I started to realize that boymoms wanted to dress their little guys in cool styles, too,” said Castelli. “But back in 2010 (when my oldest was born), it wasn’t easy to find cool styles for boys. “ Recognizing the lack of modern and stylish boys clothing lines at the time, Castelli began discussing the idea of an all-boys boutique to fill this void. “To be honest, there are no other all-boys boutiques in the Midwest,” said Castelli. “It’s like women’s and men’s markets—there are 100 women’s boutiques for every one men’s boutique. I wanted to have a store where moms of little boys could go and be excited about dressing a little boy.” Following an ultimately innocuous health scare in 2013, and nudging from her husband, Castelli decided to act on the idea she had talked about for years, opening Roman & Leo, named after her sons. “In March of 2014, I started a web site and put my items into another children’s boutique in Fishers to test it and see what the reception was. With an overwhelming response, I found my retail space and opened Roman & Leo in June of 2014,” said Castelli. Since its inception, Roman & Leo has seen customers from Fishers and beyond

in both their brick and mortar location, and through their online presence. “We see shoppers from all over Indy visiting our store, and ship orders all over the US every single day. We have shipped orders to all 50 states, and even Canada and Australia,” noted Castelli. Recently relocating to a larger space, below the Spark Apartments in Downtown Fishers, Roman & Leo experiences growth every month, continuing to broaden its reach and increasing its number of styles offered. “One thing that I would love to do with Roman & Leo is to have our own line of clothes in the future,” said Castelli. “We currently offer exclusive graphic tees that can only be found in our shop, but one day we’d love to have a full line that is all our own.” While the brand continues to grow, Castelli—-now with three boys of her own—says that her passion for the brand and market remains. “Roman & Leo started out of a passion and an idea for having a place for moms of boys to go to be excited about dressing their little boys,” said Castelli. “And it continues to be something that I am super passionate about, from searching for the coolest styles to offer in our store, to getting online orders shipped out the same business day to our online shoppers.” Visit romanandleo.com to learn more or stop in the store at 8800 North Street, Suite #115, Fishers, IN 46038.

FAVORITE SATURDAYS: With 3 boys, our Saturdays are spent primarily either on soccer fields or on a basketball court, depending on the season – but when we have a Saturday off we love frequenting Fishers parks like Flat Fork Creek, Brooks School Park, Holland Park, or a family bike ride to Crave Ice Cream for a treat!

FAVORITE LOCAL BUSINESS: My husband and my kids go to Geist Coffee every single Friday morning. I love that they have this tradition and they’ve gotten to know and expect to see the owner and the Friday regulars every week, so this is the local business my family loves and frequents the most. Personally, there are so many great women’s boutiques in Fishers like Lily & Sparrow, Dottie Couture, State of Grace, Blue Peppermint - I can’t choose a favorite! And I frequent my hair salon Flipped Out and nail salon Olio Nails monthly, so I have a lot of love for these two local businesses as well. Finally, my husband owns his own local business – RLS Wealth Management – a fee-only financial planning/investment firm, so of course that’s another favorite!

OTHER PASSIONS: I absolutely love watching my kids’ sporting events and being outside with my family playing when the weather allows. I also have done Crossfit at a local Noblesville gym, Three Kings Athletics, 3-4 days per week for the last 5 years, and I love it. It’s such a great workout, and a place to get in a sweat and connect with other women who are like me!

FISHERS NONPROFIT VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR:

TOM RICH I

t’s a sunny Tuesday afternoon, and Tom Rich is busy installing new artwork at The Art Gallery at City Hall, a free public art gallery maintained by the local nonprofit organization, Fishers Arts Council. As President of Fishers Arts Council, Rich spends countless hours each week (his wife will tell you it’s close to 40) working on the organization’s many initiatives. The Fishers Arts Council is a completely volunteer-run organization, and for the past three years, Rich has been one of its most active volunteers. He previously served as Vice President, and this year took on the role of President of the organization. “Fishers Arts Council advocates for the visual and performing arts in Fishers, in order to enrich the lives of our city’s residents and visitors,” explains Rich. “Our goal is to increase sales opportunities for artists. We help them exhibit, but we also want them to be able to sell their work.” As the face of Fishers Arts Council, Rich is constantly out in the community working with artists, businesses, and City staff on new programs and exhibitions.

“It’s fun to be in a vibrant city that recognizes that art has a place,” says Rich. Rich has been a resident of Heritage Meadows for 25 years. After retiring in 2015, he found that he didn’t have much to do, which led him to attend a callout meeting for the Fishers Arts Council. He’s enjoyed giving back to the community and supporting local artists through the organization. “Our community gives us so much. They give us roads, schools, and a sense of community. It’s important to pay them back,” says Rich. Fishers Arts Council’s impact on the local art community has been tremendous. In 2019, the organization worked with 223 artists (including 61 high school students and 51 artists with disabilities), displayed 758 pieces of art, and sold over $5,000 in artworks. In March, Rich was recognized for his service with the Nonprofit Volunteer of the Year Award, which was presented during Fishers’ City of Service Awards. The annual award ceremony recognizes community members who have donated their time to make Fishers a smart, vibrant, and entrepreneurial city. The biggest award of the evening, the Nonprofit Volunteer of the Year Award, is a community-nominated award given to a volunteer who demonstrates exceptional service to a nonprofit organization. This year, Rich wants to generate $10,000 in funding for the Fishers Arts Council and launch several new programs. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING INVOLVED?

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING INVOLVED?

It has always been an event “of the people, by the people, for the people,” and I love how more and more diverse citizen voices have engaged with the event each year.

It’s been wonderful to get to know the city and our neighbors more! My husband and I have lived in Fishers for five years, but it wasn’t until I became involved as a volunteer with Spark!Fishers that I gained a sense of pride being part of this great city.

WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE SHOULD COME TO SPARK!FISHERS?

To connect and celebrate! Connect with each other, connect with family, friends, and neighbors, as well as new experiences and perspectives. Also, to celebrate our community’s pride and patriotism, honoring those who have fought and are fighting for our freedom and liberties.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO AT SPARK!FISHERS?

JODY VALERIO

STEPHANIE CALIFAR

I have two favorites! I love the 5K run in the morning - it helps kick off the day. I also love the excitement a few minutes before the parade starts. It’s awesome to see so many people come together during that time.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING INVOLVED?

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING INVOLVED?

The people I have met through the committee over the past 3 years. Each person is from a different walk of life, but we are all there for one common goal - to create a successful and vibrant event.

I love being able to interact with other residents that I wouldn’t otherwise cross paths with, both at the event and throughout the committee planning.

WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE SHOULD COME TO SPARK!FISHERS?

WHY DO YOU THINK PEOPLE SHOULD COME TO SPARK!FISHERS?

It’s a unique Fishers gathering of friends and neighbors with live music, a parade, a 5K, and tons of food vendors, all topped off by fireworks!

Tradition is important around Independence Day, and Spark!Fishers is a fun way to create memories with your family.
