• See giving as an instrument (Phil. 4:17)

• Live consistently (Phil. 1:29-30) When I look at my own life, I find that I am happy! It doesn’t mean there aren’t goals or dreams that have yet to be realized. It doesn’t mean that everything in my life is perfect or that it has unfolded according to some grand plan I envisioned somewhere in my past. And yet, I recognize the blessings of my family, my church, my friends and the opportunities I have had in my life help to make me the person I am… and I am grateful! How about you? Are you happy, or are you more concerned with some other you have created in your mind? Do focus (more often than not) on making a significant difference for the Kingdom of God more than we seek personal others?

• Stand firm in the Lord (Phil. 4:1)

• Care about what God thinks (Phil. 4:18)

recognition relative to

• Trust God to provide (Phil. 4:19)

Recently, I ran across an anonymous quote that read, “Success is getting what you want; Happiness is wanting what you get”. Underneath the quote was a scripture reference to Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians 5:18 which says, “In everything give thanks, for this is God’s will for you in Jesus Christ”. I’ve thought a lot about that quote and reference lately. On one hand, I find it to be highly optimistic and right on par with how we ought to lead our lives. We are grateful for each day that we have, and the gifts that God has blessed us with. But on the other hand, in talking with a trusted friend, I realized that it can also be used (incorrectly, I think) as a way to accept mediocrity. I don’t for a minute believe that God desires from us mediocre effort or faith. In some sense, some people might advocate that whatever happens to us is simply a result of whether God likes us or not, and who are we to argue? It’s like playing in the Superbowl and not keeping score… it just doesn’t make sense to me! Instead, I think God does endow each of us with gifts - not in equal measure necessarily - according to the Holy Spirit in ways that help us to engage with God in His mission here on earth. Taken together, as the Body

of Christ, we are invited to make a significant impact on the lives and world around us. Paul gives us some ways in which we might focus on significance in his letter to the Philippians, primarily in the fourth chapter. The following is a short list of practices that help us maximize our witness for God.

In the end, I believe God wants us to take our thoughts and plans to Him. In fact, He wants us to seek Him first in all things (see Matthew 6:33). Sometimes our plans and desires are those of God. Other times they are not. But when we measure our lives by the happiness and joy we experience in God rather than our own sense of worth, I think we will find we desire the things of God first. In the end, we derive our happiness from things that are significant. And significance is long-lasting… sometimes eternal! It can outlast us and is reflected in our relationships with other people and Jesus. And what we find significant is revealed by commitment, our trust, and where and how we spend our time. May God bless you in all you do… and may you know that your life is significant in the eyes of God! What you do matters! And how we live our lives in relation to God and one another has the potential to shape the world around Pastoryou!

Todd Dear Church Family, A new air fryer came to live in my home this past Christmas. It came with an instruction book, a few recipes, etc. Have we used it? No! It is out of the box; it looks very nice on the shelf… unused. It’s not even plugged in. I started to use the indoor grill the other day and it didn’t get hot. When I investigated I realized I have inadvertently plugged in the toaster instead of the grill. You can have the newest and best appliances, but they are of no use or help unless they are plugged in. Oh, they make lovely doorstops and provide you with one more thing to dust, but you will not get fed unless you plug that appliance in. Plugging into the ministries of the church is much the same. We have many opportunities to grow as a disciple. You can grow in community this fall by attending the men and women’s ministry events, or join a spiritual formation group. Attending a Bible study or Sunday school class, or attending the WelbornPayne Christian Life Conference will help you grow. You can stretch your service and generosity by participating in one or more of our many mission opportunities. I challenge you this fall to plug in by remembering Worship +2: Attend worship each week as well as finding a place to serve, a place to study and a place to share in community!
