CENTRE’S PLEA On Monday, too many senior advocates, including Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, argued for lifting the stay and allowing the Rath Yatra in a restricted manner. “It is a matter of faith for crores. If Lord Jagannath will not come out tomorrow, he cannot come out for 12 years as per traditions,” Mehta said while seeking urgent hearing. The Centre told the top court that the historic Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra in Puri can be allowed without public participation in view of COVID19 pandemic. “The tradition of centuries may not be stopped,” the Centre said, while seeking modification of the court’s June 18 order staying the Rath Yatra 2020.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday modified its earlier order and allowed the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra in Odisha’s Puri to be held with the coordination of the Temple committee, State and Central government without compromising with the health issue pertaining to COVID-19. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sharad Arvind Bobde said that the apex court is only considering conducting the yatra in Puri and not anywhere else in Odisha.
