State Election Commission postpones local body elections Move comes after nCoV cases rise 29%; EC to review situation in January before taking a final call First India Bureau Gandhinagar: The State Election Commission (EC) has postponed the local body elections—slated to be held next month—by at least three months due to the COVID-19 situation. The EC will next assess the spread

of infection in January and then decide whether to hold the elections or postpone them further. According to a press release from secretary of the Election Commission Mahesh Joshi, “With the terms of six municipal corporations, 55 nagarpalikas,

31 district panchayats and 231 taluka panchayats ending soon, elections for these local bodies are due in November. However, after assessing the spike in COVID-19 in the state, the commission has decided to postpone the election by three months. The situation will be assessed again in January and then the commission will take a final call on whether to hold elections or to postpone them further.”

A notification issued by the state election commissioner Sanjay Prasad read: “The commission has considered the spread of COVID-19 and its impact across the state. The case numbers show that there has been a 29% rise in case numbers in September alone. The commission does not feel justified in risking the lives of election staff, officers on duty for elections and

voters just to hold elections. People’s safety and health is the primary concern. Democracy is alive because of people. Other states had postponed local body elections when the infection rate was lower than in Gujarat. The current situation is not conducive to holding local body elections and so the commission has decided to postpone them.” Turn to P6
