Relaxed norms: Now get tested for COVID-19 on MD’s prescription ANY PRIVATE HOSPITALS FOUND CHARGING EXORBITANT FEES COULD LOSE ITS LICENCE, BE SEALED, Dy CM WARNED First India Bureau Gandhinagar: The state government has taken yet another new decision on COVID-19 testing. Having first prohibited private labs from conducting tests,

and later allowing them to test with prior permission, the state has now announced that anyone with an MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree can prescribe a COVID-19 test and this can be con-

ducted by a private lab. The government’s latest pivot, much like the previous one, comes as a result of its decision being challenged in the High Court. Making the announcement, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel told the media that the decision follows demand from both the public and the medical expert committee to allow people with suspicions of being in-

fected to be tested. However, it is important to note that the prescription for the test has to come from a medical professional with a minimum qualification of MD and that too only if the patient has symptoms relevant to COVID-19. Once the test is prescribed, the doctor also has to inform the local civic authorities. Patel has warned private hospitals that any

private hospital trying to exploit the current health crisis for monetary gain will face severe consequences, including having its licence cancelled. “This is the time to serve society and not look for profits. The state government has received complaints from citizens that some private hospitals are charging exorbitant amounts from patients during this emotional time. Such private hos-

pitals will have to see that it is stopped at the earliest,” he said. “No private hospital should charge beyond the expenses for treating a patient. If we receive complaints and there is enough evidence, the state will hesitate in taking harsh actions against such hospitals. If required, the hospital’s licence will be cancelled and the hospital itself will be sealed,” he added.
