RS HOPES: Merja’s move checkmates Congress dream MORBI LAWMAKER IS THE 14TH MLA TO RESIGN FROM THE PARTY SINCE THE 2017 ASSEMBLY ELECTION Gargi Raval Gandhinagar/ Ahmedabad: A third Congress MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) resigned on Friday giving a fresh jolt to the party in the run-up to the Rajya Sabha elections. Brijesh Merja’s

departure could mark the end of the grand old party’s ambition to win two seats of the four empty seats in the upper house of the Parliament. With eight Congress MLAs stepping down since March, the June 19 poll is likely to be a shoo-in for the three

candidates fielded by the incumbent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Speaker of the Assembly Rajendra Trivedi accepted Merja’s resignation letter on Friday. In his resignation letter to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi, Merja mentions that he has been unable to serve the people while remaining a part of the party. The development comes two days after Akshay Patel (Karjan) and Jitu Chaudhary (Kaprada) tendered

their resignations on Wednesday. Sources say the Congress’ losing streak is likely to continue with two more MLAs set to leave the party before the Rajya Sabha elections. As a Patidar candidate, Merja had won the 2017 election in the midst of a Patidar wave. “His history is full of twists and turns. He was never loyal to any party. In the past, he has left BJP and Congress twice. While he was work-

ing with the state government, he was very close with Narhari Amin. This resignation is nothing but a form of help to Amin. Of course, either Amin or the BJP must have made him a very lucrative offer,” said a source in the party. Narhari Amin, formerly of the Congress, is one of the BJP’s three candidates in the upcoming poll, with the other two being Abhay Bhardwaj and Ramilaben Bara. Turn on P6, More on P2
