fter high drama and three days of political roller coaster ride and stalwarts’ names being proposed and their subsequent denials, when the Opposition camp at the behest of WB CM, Mamata Banerjee finally named Yashwant Sinha for the topmost post of the country… the bombshell from the otherwise “quiet” NDA came the same day or is it better to say close to midnight.

After a meeting in the national Capital between PM Narendra Modi and senior BJP leaders, Draupadi Murmu’s name was announced as the NDA’s presidential candidate.

Earlier, the “fractured” Opposition camp had proposed names of Sharad Pawar, Farooq Abdullah and Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Gopalkrishna Gandhi for the top post. But all of them refused as they had doubts somewhere deep down about the Opposition’s chances of getting the numbers.

Astute as a politician that he is, PM Modi has the ability to think and think fast and also in terms of long-term vision. The selection of former Jharkhand Governor Draupadi Murmu as the NDA’s presidential nominee, after the tenure of a Dalit President Ram Nath Kovind expires next month, is in sync with PM Modi’s masterstroke.

With the BJP already enjoying 48% of the presidential votes, its candidate, Droupadi Murmu, the 1958-born and former Governor of Jharkhand, is almost certain to win. Hailing from Orissa,

Opposition’s Prez candidate Yashwant Sinha with Sharad Pawar, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Ashok Gehlot, Jairam Ramesh, Akhilesh Yadav, Farooq Abdullah, Jayant Chaudhary, KT Rama Rao, Abhishek Banerjee and other dignitaries during filing his nomination papers on June 28.

Murmu already has the “support” of the state’s CM, Naveen Patnaik who recently advocated for the “state’s daughter.” And by virtue of being the former Governor of Jharkhand, can Soren shy away from her candidature?

Currently, I reiterate, the BJP and its allies have around 48%. The grand old party, Congress and its allies have 24% votes, TMC has 5.4%, Jaganmohan Reddy’s YSR Congress has 4% and Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal has about 3%.

If YSR Congress or BJD pulls the plug on the Opposition candidate and sides with the NDA… it will become a cakewalk for them to win the polls.

It may be recalled that YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy met PM Modi recently and so did Naveen Patnaik May 30 and politically if that is any indication of things to come in the next few weeks, the NDA is currently placed in a better position.

he Sangrur Lok Sabha by-election result has come as a jolt for the Aam Aadmi Party but is no less a concern for the Central government. The problem with Simranjit Singh Mann’s victory from the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s constituency is over his allegiance to Khalistani militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Simranjit (77) gave credit for his victory to the slain militant and vowed to support the pro-Khalistan agenda. The radical former IPS officer’s presence in the Lok Sabha will be seen as a boost for the agenda of a separate state. He also said he will raise the issue of “Indian Army’s atrocities in Kashmir” in the House.

Punjab to bring resolution against Agnipath scheme Chandigarh (Agencies): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday informed the Assembly that the state will soon bring a resolution in the House to oppose the Centre’s Agnipath scheme regarding the defence recruitment.

Also, he said, a resolution on condemning the ban on Sidhu Moosewala’s new song, SYL, on YouTube.

“Agnipath is a whimsical and irrational move of the NDA government which will destroy the basic fabric of the Indian Army,” said the chief minister, while replying to issue raised

by Leader of Opposition and Congress member Partap Singh Bajwa during Zero hour.

However, BJP member Ashwani Sharma opposed the move.

The Chief Minister said this is another illogical move by the NDA government to ruin the future of the youth.

40% cut money: Centre seeks proofs against Karnataka BJP Bengaluru (Agencies): The Union Home Ministry has sought documents and proofs from the president of the Karnataka State Contractors’ Association who levelled allegations of 40 per cent commission in all public contracts against the ruling BJP in the state.

Association president Kempanna has submitted all the documents to the officer sent by the Union Home Ministry in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

Kempanna had written to the Home Ministry about the corruption allegations against the State Government.

“Union Home Ministry has sent an officer in this regard to discuss the issue. I have all the documents that were sought by the officer. I will meet and give all details in that regard,” Kempanna had stated.

Kempanna had got a call from the MHA earlier asking him to submit the documents pertaining to his allegations.

Kempanna told that if a proper investigation will be done, he will provide all the documents.

The Opposition parties, including the RJD, CPI, CPM, CPI (ML), led by Leader of Opposition and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav walked out from the Assembly on Tuesday. They staged a protest before former CM Karpoori Thakur’s statue inside the Assembly premises. Congress and AIMIM leaders were also not present inside the House.

Kolkata (Agencies): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday alleged there is indirect pressure on her to appoint Agniveers on state government jobs after they complete four years of service in the armed forces under the Agnipath scheme. According to her, such appeals have come to her from a section of the defence personnel. “Recently, I received a letter from a colonel on this count. He said that he will forward names of Agniveers from a panel which might be recruited in the state government,” she said.

‘31% of sitting RS members have declared criminal cases’ New Delhi (Agencies): About 31 per cent of sitting Rajya Sabha MPs have declared criminal cases against themselves while the average assets of the Upper House members are 79.54 crore, according to a report released by ADRNational Election Watch.

Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch have analyzed the criminal, financial and other background details of 226 out of 233 sitting MPs. In the current Rajya Sabha, one seat is vacant. Two MPs have not been analysed as their affidavits were unavailable and four seats of J&K are undefined, the report said.

Of the 226 sitting Rajya Sabha MPs, 197 (87 per cent) are ‘crorepatis’ and the average assets per MP are Rs 79.54 crore, the report said.

Of 226 members, 71 have declared criminal cases against themselves and 37 have declared serious criminal cases.

Regional parties can’t be battered by breakaway factions!

away from DMK, MK Alagiri formed a separate party but could not make a dent in the state politics. Shivpal Yadav formed the party after separating from the Samajwadi Party, but failed.

After the breakup, some of the parties which were left in the hands of someone from the family became successful. Like in Haryana, Dushyant Chautala formed the Jannayak Janata Party after separating from the Indian National Lok Dal and was

successful in the first elections. Now the main party of Chautala family is JJP. The Telugu Desam Party formed by NT Rama Rao was taken under control by his son-inlaw Chandrababu Naidu and he was also successful. But no person from outside can usurp parties which are controlled by one family.

Despite being weak, such parties are bound by the charisma of the leader. For example, despite being marginalised, there are many parties like Rashtriya

Janata Dal in Bihar, DMK in Tamil Nadu, JDS in Karnataka, RLD in Uttar Pradesh, Akali Dal in Punjab, in which there was no big break and the parties survived. In this, there is a different example of Lok Janshakti Party of Bihar, in which family members quarreled, party broke down and party’s name and election symbol was confiscated. Despite this, it is certain that the legacy of Ram Vilas Paswan will remain with his son Chirag Paswan.

This remains India’s only gold medal at the prestigious tournament where the country had beaten arch-rivals Pak 2-1 in the final. Singh was also part of the bronze medal-winning team at the 1972 Munich Olympics and silver medal at 1973 World Cup in Amsterdam.

PLI for white goods: 15 more Cos selected New Delhi (PTI): As many as 15 companies, including Adani Copper Tubes, LG Electronics and Wipro Enterprises, with committed investment of `1,368 crore, have been selected as beneficiaries under the PLI scheme for the white goods sector, the government said on Tuesday.

In March, the commerce and industry ministry had reopened the application window for its `6,238-crore PLI scheme for white goods

with an aim to accommodate more players.

Last year, as many as 46 firms with committed investment of `5,264 crore were selected in the first round the scheme. In the second round, 19 companies had applied.

The 15 firms selected include six for manufacturing AC components with committed investments of `908 crore and nine for LED light components with committed investments of `460 crore.

DoT issues norms for captive private network licences New Delhi (PTI): The telecom department has issued rules for enterprises setting up Captive Non Public Network, stipulating a minimum networth of `100 crore for applicants seeking direct assignment of spectrum from the government.

The applicant must be an Indian company registered under the Companies Act, DoT said listing out the broad guidelines that would apply for CNPN licence, including rules for enterprises setting up such networks.

The CNPN licencee would not be required to pay any entry fee or licence fee.

The hike will be across the range of commercial vehicles and the quantum will depend on individual model and variant, Tata Motors said in a regulatory filing issues on Tuesday. In April, Tata Motors had hiked the prices of its passenger vehicles by 1.1% and those of commercial vehicles by 2-2.5% to partially offset rising input costs.
