Non-disclosure of criminal info of Oppn creates ruckus, Bajwa throws file at Chair in RS candidates: SC fines 8 pol parties BJP, Congress, RJD, JDU, CPI, LJP fined `1L; CPIM and NCP fined `5L New Delhi: The Supreme Court Tuesday fined eight political parties including the BJP and the Congress for failing to comply with the court’s order to furnish details of candidates with criminal backgrounds on their official websites in the Bihar Assembly Elections. These political parties were also directed to disclose information about such candidates in newspapers as well as on social media. Six parties — BJP, Congress, Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD), Janata Dal United, CPI, and Lok Jan Shakti Party — were fined Rs 1 lakh for partial non-compliance. Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Nationalist Congress Party
(NCP) were fined Rs 5 lakh each for total noncompliance of the top court order. The court passed orders on a contempt plea which raised the issue of criminalisation of politics claiming that directions given by the apex court in its September 2018 verdict relating to disclosure of criminal antecedents by candidates are not being followed A bench headed by Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman said the reasons for selecting candi-
dates with pending criminal cases should be justifiable with reference to qualification and merit and not merely on winnability.

New Delhi: Forthcoming census will be the first digital census and there is a provision for self-enumeration for it, the Centre told LS on Tuesday in response to a question by Shashi Tharoor on whether there will be any changes or any additional information required in the 2021 Census as compared to previous editions. The Centre said a mobile app for the collection of data and a census portal for management and monitoring of various census related activities have been developed.

Pegasus row: SC tells parties to avoid ‘parallel debates’ on SM New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday told petitioners seeking a probe into the Pegasus snooping row that they should “have faith in the system” and refrain from participating in “parallel debates on social media”. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India N V Ramana said: “Nobody should cross the limit and all will be given the opportunity in the case. We are not against debates but when the matter is in court, it should be deliberated here.” It also asked parties to answer the queries through proper debate in court and not outside. The bench said, “This is what we are saying. We ask questions from parties. We take both parties to task. The matter should be deliberated here.”

The award, third time in a row, was received virtually by Additional Chief Secretary MSME, Navneet Sehgal. “Efforts are being made continuously by the state government under the leadership of the Chief Minister to make government procurement corruption free,” said Sehgal. J&K: Terrorists hurl grenade; journo held Srinagar: In a major threat to national security just five days ahead of Independence Day, terrorists on Tuesday launched grenade at security forces at Srinagar’s Hari Singh High Street.“At around 2:40 pm, a miscreant targeted a bunker of SSB with a grenade. There has been no injury to any security force personnel,” Kishore Prasad, DIG CRPF in Srinagar, said. Five civilians were reportedly injured in the grenade attack on secu-
rity personnel today. “Terrorists lobbed a grenade towards security force personnel near Amira Kadal bridge which exploded by the roadside,” officials in the knowhow said. During the probe, a journalist named Adil was arrested with two grenades in Srinagar. “Adil was working for Jaish-eMohammed. His associate Zahid Nazar, who escaped from the site, had recently come out of jail,” J&K police said. —Agencies
