Lucknow: Over 60 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the first phase of polling held on Thursday across 58 assembly constituencies in 11 districts of Uttar Pradesh. Polling closed at 6 pm following a onehour extension because of Covid-19 protocols. The day passed off peacefully with minor technical snags in EVMs at some places, election officials said. Additional Chief Election Officer (ACEO) BD Ram Tiwari said, “There were reports of a technical error in EVMs at some places.” Those EVMs were being replaced as the reports came in, he added. On the Samajwadi Party’s allegation that poor voters were not allowed to exercise their franchise in Dundukheda village in the Kairana assembly constituency, Tiwari said the district magistrate concerned was asked to look into the matter.

Justice Bhandari to take oath on Feb 14 as regular CJ of Madras High court Chennai: President Ram nath Kovind on Thursday appointed 17 judges in high courts of Madhya Pradesh, Madras, Orrisa, and Andhra Pradesh. Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari, who had been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court recently, has been made the Chief Justice of the High Court. Justice Bhandari will take oath as CJ of Madras High Court on February 14. A communication to this effect was signed by the President of India and issued on Thursday. Justice M N Bhandari was transferred to the Madras High Court in November last year and he assumed office as
the ACJ on November 22. Born on September 30, 1960, Justice Bhandari enrolled himself as a lawyer in May, 1983. He was elevated from the Bar to the Bench of the Rajasthan High Court in July, 2007 and transferred to the Allahabad High Court in March, 2019, from where he was transferred and posted as the ACJ of the Madras High Court in November last year.
