Lucknow: Over 60 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the first phase of polling held on Thursday across 58 assembly constituencies in 11 districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Polling closed at 6 pm following a onehour extension because of Covid-19 protocols. The day passed off peacefully with minor technical snags in EVMs at some places, election officials said.

Additional Chief Election Officer (ACEO) BD Ram Tiwari said, “There were reports of a technical error in EVMs at some places.” Those EVMs were being replaced as the reports came in, he added.

On the Samajwadi Party’s allegation that poor voters were not allowed to exercise their franchise in Dundukheda village in the Kairana assembly constituency, Tiwari said the district magistrate concerned was asked to look into the matter.

Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das on Thursday said cryptocurrencies are a “threat to macroeconomic and financial stability” and cautioned investors against punting on them. Meanwhile, RBI left benchmark lending rate unchanged at 4 percent.

Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari, who had been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court recently, has been made the Chief Justice of the High Court. Justice Bhandari will take oath as CJ of Madras High Court on February 14. A communication to this effect was signed by the President of India and issued on Thursday. Justice M N Bhandari was transferred to the Madras High Court in November last year and he assumed office as

the ACJ on November 22.

Born on September 30, 1960, Justice Bhandari enrolled himself as a lawyer in May, 1983. He was elevated from the Bar to the Bench of the Rajasthan High Court in July, 2007 and transferred to the Allahabad High Court in March, 2019, from where he was transferred and posted as the ACJ of the Madras High Court in November last year.

Dhariwal informed the house that the state govt will introduce a bill with stringent provisions to check paper leaks and other irregularities in conducting examination. He informed that during the previous BJP govt — In 2014, the exam papers of RAS and RJS were leaked; in 2013 LDC; and

According to the health department, the peak of the third wave is believed to be on January 21, when the maximum number of 16,878 cases were reported in a single day.

Since then, the cases of corona are continuously decreasing. As per an analysis of the health department, the second wave was the deadliest and the most dangerous.

airy tales are tales only. Till the time the Prince actually descends from heaven, fights it out and conquers the throne. Life of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one such tale that you have to pinch twice to believe.

A self-made, self-less, self-motivated soul from a non-descriptive village grows to a stature that he becomes a living legend.

THE CHILDHOOD Born to a poor family in a small village of Gujarat Vadnagar, Modi faced extreme hardships in his formative years. His parents - Damodardas Modi and Hiraben though were financially deprived but enriched Narendra and his 6 siblings with ethical values and sanskar.

Modi’s school mates and neighbours, recount that he had a certain spark since an early age

where even though he used to be mischievous, he still had the leadership aspect to his personality. A dare devil boy Narendra would always be ready to even risk his life for wellbeing of others. Living in scarcity had only imbibed neversay-die spirit in Narendra. This helped Narendra tide over all the adversities around and hone leadership skills to prepare for a big battle awaiting the young Modi, who was gearing up to leave his family and home in the quest for ‘tatvagyan’.

Before stepping out in the wilderness, Narendra wanted to study in Sainik School, as he was enamoured with the armed forces, and asked his father for it. But for Damodardas it was simply an unaffordable proposition. The refusal from his father further ignited Narendra’s desire to wear uniform. He opted to join junior NCC. But

the NCC invigilator said that he did not meet the height requirements and he could not be given a place. However, a determined Narendra insisted and the invigilator eventually asked him to finish three tasks- a sprint, a frog jump and running on one foot - within stipulated time limit.

To the invigilator’s surprise, he completed and forced his way into NCC the way he stormed into Politics and reach the zenith.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME The rigorous NCC training instilled discipline and selfless service. True to his name, Modi, inspired by his namesake Narendranath Datta, who was later known as Swami Vivekanand, decided to leave his family and mother to serve motherland. In 1967, at the young age of 17, the thought of becoming a saint or sadhu came when he saw a seer meditating immersed in a pit near Vadnagar railway station. That time Narendra was going with his family to attend a marriage. The sheer sight of the sage engrossed in deep meditation un-

spending some time moved to Ahmedabad to work at his maternal uncle’s canteen. There he happened to meet Vakil Sahab, an RSS Pracharak, who drew Narendra into the Sangh. It was Vakil Sahab, who enrolled him for further studies and made arrangements for his stay in Hedgewar Bhawan of RSS in Ahmedabad.

The colour of khakhi was still new to Modi when in 1971, he decided to go to Delhi for staging his maiden protest against the non callous attitude of Indira Gandhi government towards the plight of people living in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), which was being bulldozed by the political might of their fellow countrymen of West Pakistan.

The demonstrators cordoned off the Pakistan Embassy and police rounded up all the dem-

onstrators, including Narendra who was later put in Tihar Jail. The creation of a new country Bangladesh post 1971 Indo Pak war has given birth to a political prodigy in India who stepped into politics for the cause of Bangladesh and now championing the cause of entire world.

Hyderabad: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested Balvinder Singh the Promoter — Director of the PCH Corporation Ltd and other PCH group companies under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in a case relating to defrauding banks to the tune of Rs 370 crore. Balvinder Singh was arrested on Tuesday. He was produced before a Special Court in Hyderabad on Wednesday, which remanded him to judicial custody till February 23. Earlier the CBI in Chennai had lodged a case against him and others under various sections of the IPC. The federal probe agency had also submitted a charge sheet in this connection before a Special Court.

namic officer. In the years 2006-07, he also held the reins of the Finance department in the state and served as Commissioner, Commercial Taxes also.

This experience of finance will now be helpful to Sanjay in this new innings in the Ministry of Finance. There are still 6 years left to his retirement in February 2028.

The spot in the Finance Ministry that he has reached now, only points to his path to the chair of Cabinet Secretary of Government of India in the future.

he philosopher Socrates articulated that love is not lacking in anything — it is much more than an approximation, also proximal to yearning and, therefore, not fixated with itself. He expressed, no less, that love does not possess, notwithstanding its plethora of beautiful things, including wisdom, and of everything that is divinely, also exquisitely good.

Love encompasses the mind and heart, all right — it is the epitome of romance that permeates the universe. That the science of attraction and romantic love holds a certain biological element to courtship is passé. This ensures and also propagates the survival of our species.

You’d now delve into a fascinating context that is not confined to just romantic novels, or movies — from Hollywood to Bollywood. It is no rocket science either — the fact, as you may argue, is men are by instinct mesmerised by beautiful, resilient women endowed with natural, also dazzling physical attributes. On the other side of the spectrum, most women have a proclivity too for men who ‘present’ with ‘alpha’ attributes — in simple terms, the ability to hold sway over their peers and celebrate that ‘X factor.’ You’d think of a simile to bring home the point — a middle-aged successful professional is as attractive to women as a young, handsome, but less prosperous, guy.

There is something called the ‘ e x -

change’ theory of ‘mate selection.’ Men tend to select mates who are more, or less, their equals. The reason is simple — one often chooses a potential partner based on history, viz., background, financial standing, physical appeal, community bearings, and personality. The other credo relates to what is labelled as ‘persona’ theory, or how a prospective suitor ‘ups’ their self-confidence — a significant feature in mate preference.

given that there are two facets to such a ‘rainbow synthesis.’

The ‘persona’ theory contends that most folks opt for a companion who has the potential to boost one’s self-image. There’s enough reason for one to subscribe to the idea, thanks to our c o l l e c t ive experience.

we not, likewise, dread, despite our good standing, or self-worth, to be knocked down in our self-esteem at some point — be it a sudden setback, or disapproval of others around?

The two theories are, of course, not all-encompassing. They are primarily a possibility construct. This brings us to the question: what provides the ‘ammo’ for romantic love? Or, why ought couples to have balancing attributes? The more c o -

gently we examine the idea of romantic allure, the more flawed our theories appear to be. Just think of it — any emotional dent, small or big, for example, can impair the relationship for either partner.

It is not that the idea of failure implies a ‘botched’ romance — it may

happen to just about anyone, despite one’s best intentions. It is all part of the initiative called love, or ‘bonding,’ through which you want to grow, expand, and live with for the rest of your life — provided the other person is just as willing and equally accommodative.

This brings us to yet another element — the puzzling component called romantic ‘pull.’ Here’s a classical example. You’d have met dozens of people who were physically gorgeous to grab your attention. The moment you leisurely sieve the ‘list,’ you will be able to recall just a handful, who would have provided you ‘face equity’ comparable to — or, higher than — your estimation.

This provides adequate grist to the concept that most of us are, or have been, profoundly attracted to only a few, select individuals. The best, also the amusing, part is the few that you have been captivated with would bear a similarity to one another — most often, convincingly. This isn’t all. When you contemplate about the personality traits of people you’d have genuinely thought as being good, potential mates, or make a ‘catalogue’ of their primary individual qualities, you would be amazed to discern more than a load of positives, and, most remarkably, just as many ‘flawed’ characteristics.

You’d, therefore, ask: how does this ‘fusion’ complement our perception of romantic allure? The answer is simple and also profound. Most people appear to be exceedingly finicky in their choice of mates. They may also be on a discerning quest, also mission, for the ‘one and only’ ideal companion, or spouse, with a precise set of positive, but not ‘twomany’ negative, qualities — to live life fully, while intuitively being optimistic in savouring that full measure of everlasting romantic and marital happiness in the individual one was first attracted to.

A rethink is in order for those going in for a heavy investment.

Recovering a loaned amount from someone will not pose much difficulty.

You will manage to defuse tensions prevailing at home by your tactful ways.

A work trip is on the cards for some. You manage to weave your magic.
