Editors Guild approaches SC, seeks SIT investigation New Delhi: Editors Guild of India (EGI) approached the Supreme Court on Tuesday seeking a direction for a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the alleged Pegasus snoopgate case.

There are already five petitions pending in the Apex Court on the same issue. The EGI has filed the petition before the Supreme Court through advocates Rupali Samuel, Raghav Tankha, and others.

The petitioner, EGI, sought a direction to constitute an independent SIT to investigate the procurement and use of spyware, hacking or electronic surveillance tools such as ‘Pegasus’ in India.

New Delhi: The Delhi HC on Tuesday dismissed a petition that sought a direction to stop the use of EVM and proposed the use of ballot paper in any forthcoming elections.

First India Bureau Jaipur: The torrential rains on Monday in Bagru of Jaipur district and Baran district have brought a flood situation. One-storey houses in several colonies were submerged in water on Monday. Many people remained trapped in the water in Chitrauli village.

After nearly 40 years a flood-like situation has arisen in Bagru. Similarly, in the Phagi town of Jaipur, people were trapped in houses after heavy rains late at night.

In Baran, many areas were flooded due to the incessant rains for the last 5 days. Shahabad block received 246 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 7 am on Tuesday and a further 60 mm of rain was recorded till 11 am, inundating several colonies in the low-lying areas, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Rahul Malhotra said.

So there come the ‘sharks’ in the shape of Pegasus snooping case, opposition’s ruckus and government’s inability to get the ‘House’ (Parliament) in order even as leaders of Opposition are getting bold by the day and mulling on formation of a larger alliance

dialogue from a Hollywood movie based on a fictional character comes to mind which reads, “If you could make God bleed, people would cease to believe in him, there will be blood in the water, the sharks will come.” We may tend to enjoy the dialogues for the brief moment, but sometimes they reflect the truth about life.

And this particular dialogue fits well in the current political scheme of things vis-a-vis Narendra Modi and the Union government. While terming the Prime Minister a ‘God’, may be a tad too much, but you get the idea. So where is the comparison?

Well, winning West Bengal featured majorly in BJP and Narendra Modi’s agenda but when the party lost in the assembly election to Mamata Banerjee, it was seen as its most gruesome defeat till date. This has exposed the chinks in BJP’s armour, which is left scarred and bleeding now.

And it seems that their idea is working. Why? Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, whose party JDU is a part of the NDA, has yet again opened a front against the union government demanding a probe in the Pegasus espionage case.

But what could be the reason for Nitish’s ‘change of heart’? Amid the sudden friendliness among opposition parties, can Nitish be visualising himself in the chair of the Prime Minister?

Let’s find out.

Let us take a stroll back into time. The year was 2015, when after leaving BJP’s fold, Nitish - riding high on his Prime Ministerial dream had formed a Grand Alliance of various parties from Bihar and had successfully dented BJP’s dream of forming government. The entire opposition was looking at him as an alternative to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he was being discussed everywhere from corporate to media sector. However, at the last moment, he left the Mahagathbandhan and joined the BJP. Nitish’s JDU had an upper hand in the state then but tables turned after the 2020 election wherein BJP came on top. But Nitish’s ‘dream’ remains as strong as before and to fulfill the same, perhaps, he is not making repeated remarks against the government, further hitting the morale of NDA leaders.

BIG HIKE: DELHI LEGISLATORS ARE POOR COUSINS OF MLAS IN OTHER STATES

egislators in Delhi have reason to break into half a smile; the Union Home Ministry has approved a salary hike for them. From Rs 53,000 a month, including Rs 12,000 as salary and the remaining in allowances, their total salary has been raised to Rs 90,000 a month. Of this the salary component will be Rs 30,000 and Rs 60,000 in allowances. This is the first salary hike for Delhi legislators in 10 years and doesn’t look decent enough when compared to what their counterparts get in other states. Telangana legislators get a whopping Rs 2.5 lakh a month and those in Uttarakhand are paid a salary of Rs 2.4 lakh.

Goa MLAs get Rs 1.99 lakh and Andhra Pradesh pays Rs 1.75 lakh to its legislators.

The hike for Delhi MLAs is in line with the MHA’s proposal which rejected Delhi’s plea for parity with legislators in other States where a government is permitted to periodically raise members’ salaries.

While he swallowed the pill then, when the Modi government was formed again in 2019, then too BJP offered one berth to JDU but Nitish denied. Two years later, again, during the recent shuffle of the Modi cabinet, the same offer was repeated, and this time around Nitish accepted.

Interestingly, even before the Bihar assembly results were announced in 2020, Nitish had shown his reluctance, perhaps due to the pressing matters, to continue as Chief Minister of the BJP-JDU alliance but BJP leaders insisted to the tune that they denied having anyone else lead the government.

In fact, Nitish Kumar is said to be angry with the BJP due to many things. First, the BJP broke his party in Nagaland and merged his party’s MLAs with the BJP. So, this can be one reason for Nitish’s ‘resentment’. But being alive in the political arena for too long, Nitish knows how to handle the situation and therefore his recent demand for a caste census, contrary to the opinion of the central government.

It is also to be kept in mind that even though with NDA, Nitish has been ‘lobbying’ to meet other party leaders, to initiate momentum in his favour. There was a time, nearly six years back, when Nitish was in the driving seat, like TMC’s Mamata Banerjee is in right now, but he let go of the ‘opportunity’ then.

So long story short, it seems that Nitish could actually be a dark horse in the race to the chair of PM, provided he can forge a regional alliance of majority players like RJD, Samajwadi Party and other regional players down south as well, but first he will have to become the face of the opposition alliance well if given a chance. After this statement, there was a tremendous political stir in Bihar. In the midst of this stir, Nitish Kumar met former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala on Sunday.

Since his release from jail, Chautala has been talking of forming a Third Front and that is why meeting Nitish on ‘Friendship Day’ has more meaning than one.

Furthermore, Nitish has already ‘uprooted’ Chirag Paswan’s LJP in Bihar and made his uncle - Pashupati Paras - the leader. Chirag Paswan had fielded his candidate against every candidate of Janata Dal-U and had announced that JDU would be wiped out and his party would form the government with BJP. Nitish later took revenge and it now seems that Paras would back Nitish for the Union role, since there will be a chance of Paras getting the chair vacated

by Nitish in Bihar.

Meanwhile, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav has met Nitish on the issue of conducting caste census. Both are pressurizing the central gov-

ernment to conduct the caste census.

Seeing the manner in which Nitish is doing proactive politics after being deceived directly from the NDA constituent Lok Janshakti Party and indirectly from the BJP in the assembly elections, it seems that in the coming days, the equations will change. RJD and JDU, both arch rival parties of Bihar, can grow closer and signs of this have already started to appear. Both the parties can come together on the issue of caste based census. Tejashwi Yadav went to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s chamber in the assembly and met him. Both Tejashwi and his brother Tej Pratap had gone to meet him on the last day of the assembly session.

And to top it all, his equation with a mastermind political strategist Prashant Kishor, who was accorded the rank of a minister by Nitish, is also well known. Prashant is looking for a central role in Congress and he could be an important piece of the puzzle when the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ is formed yet again and his equation with Nitish will come in handy for a seamless coalition.

So long story short, it seems that Nitish could actually be a dark horse in the race to the chair of PM, provided he can forge a regional alliance of majority players like RJD, Samajwadi Party and other regional players down south as well, but first he will have to become the face of the opposition alliance and with Mamata Banerjee too making her own efforts in the foray, things are surely going to be interesting in the months to come.

PORTAL DEVELOPED FOR CAPACITY BUILDING OF POLICE AND JUDICIARY New Delhi: A Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) platform, the ‘CyTrain’ portal has been developed for capacity building of the police and judicial officers, said Nityanand Rai Minister of State, Home Affairs in a written reply in the Lok Sabha. The platform has been developed under the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) to provide courses to the officers.

NO STUDY TO ASSESS IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON SUICIDES: MHA New Delhi: Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai said the govt has not conducted any study to assess the impact of the pandemic on suicides in the country. Questions were raised in LS, whether the Government has conducted any study or proposes to conduct a study to find out the factors responsible for increase of suicide cases in rural areas after the COVID-19 pandemic in various parts of the country. DELHI CABINET NOD TO SALARY HIKE FOR MLAS TO `30,000 PER MONTH New Delhi: The Delhi Cabinet on Tuesday approved salary hike for MLAs as per the Centre’s proposal, raising the pay to Rs 30,000 from Rs 12,000 per month, a day after the Centre rejected a plan to raise salaries of MLAs at par with other state legislatures. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led cabinet approved the Centre’s proposed salary for MLAs, even as the government said Delhi’s MLAs will continue to be among the lowest-paid MLAs across India.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday addressed the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana and said this scheme has reduced the worries of the poor and increased their confidence.

“Today, under PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, the free ration is being distributed to lakhs of families of Gujarat. This free ration reduces the worries of the poor in this time of the global pandemic and increases their confidence,” said the Prime Minister.

INTERACTION WITH BENEFICIARIES OF PM GARIB KALYAN ANNA YOJANA

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with the beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) in Gujarat through video conferencing on Tuesday. During the COVID-19 lockdown last year, under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, the Government provided a free ration to 80 crore beneficiaries for eight months.

During the interaction, PM Modi said Gujarat was on a development path for the past years.

“After independence, almost every government had talked about providing reasonably priced food to the poor.

Covid 2nd wave not over yet, ‘R number’ high in 8 states: Centre New Delhi: Underlining that the second wave of COVID-19 is not over yet, the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday said that the Reproduction (R) number is high in eight states adding that case trajectory needs to be controlled there.

Addressing a press conference over the Covid-19 situation in the country, Joint Secretary of Union Health Ministry, Lav Agarwal said whenever R number is above one, it means that the case trajectory is increasing and it needs to be controlled. Poll violence: Calcutta HC reserves order after hearing Kolkata: Calcutta High Court reserved the order after the final hearing in the West Bengal post-poll violence matter that ended on Tuesday.

Uttarakhand: The Uttarakhand HC in Nainital has asked the petitioner against the state government’s decision to re-open schools from August to make amendments in his PIL. Petitioner Vijay Singh of Dehradun filed a PIL against Cabinet’s decision to re-open schools in Uttarakhand. In his PIL, he challenged the government’s decision to re-open schools for classes 6-12 citing the risk of exposure to Coronavirus. Kathua: Search operations for the two Army pilots missing after their ALH Dhruv helicopter crashed in the Ranjit Sagar lake in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua have been halted and will be resumed on Wednesday morning, said Army sources. China releases video of 2020 Galwan clashes

New Delhi: Chinese online handles have released footage of the clashes which took place between Indian and Chinese soldiers in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh in June last year. The visuals surfaced hours after India and China issued a joint statement yesterday saying they would continue Commander-level military talks to deescalate tensions in eastern Ladakh.

Mukesh Mathrani Barmer: Around 27 lakhs children in the state are at risk of getting anaemic. In a bid to help the children fight anaemia, the Union government had launched a program the National Iron Plus Initiative (NIPI) in 2013. Under this programme the government is giving IFA (Iron Folic Acid) syrup to the target group.

But it is running at snail pace in Rajasthan.

Due to official apathy, the situation is that around 27 lakhs children in Rajasthan have not got required doses of IFA syrup, helpful in fighting anaemia. Official data

SE in ACB custody after broker held with `28,000 First India Bureau

Jodhpur: The AntiCorruption Bureau, Jodhpur arrested a broker Kantilal for collecting bribes from prospective consumers in Jalore on the name of Superintendent Engineer (SE) Chatar Singh Meena of power distribution company (discom), who is also in custody for questioning.

ACB DIG Vishnukant said that owners of a cement brick manufacturing unit in Jalore had applied for connection for 15 HP power supply for which SE allegedly demanded Rs 30,000.

An ACB team, led by ASP Dr Mahavir Singh Ranawat, laid a trap and nabbed Kantilal after he received Rs 28,000 bribe amount. Later, the team went to Meena’s residence and took him into custody. Meena is being interrogated by the team.

ON THE RUN, HEAD CONSTABLE HELD Banswara: A head constable was arrested in a case of graft in Pratapgarh district. The accused head constable Munim Kadli had demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 to settle a case of scuffling which was registered with Dhariyawad police station in 2020. He later agreed to take Rs 6,000.

Sikar: In a daring loot, unidentified miscreants cut open an ATM in Laxmangarh town of Sikar district late on Monday and decamped with Rs 12 lakh. According to police, four to five people used a gas cutter on the SBI ATM near Modi University. Branch manager Ramkumar Kinkar has submitted a complaint to the local police.

The CCTV footage obtained from the ATM shows that the culprits arrived on the spot in a car late on Monday and tried to tamper with the CCTV camera.

Jaisalmer: Huge deposits of cement grade limestone have been found

by Geological Survey of India (GSI) in more than 13 square km area of Jaisalmer. The GSI officials handed over the report to ACS Mines Dr. Subodh Agarwal.

Agarwal said that in the discovery of GSI, 315.235 million tonnes of cement grade limestone reserves are likely to be there in Jaisalmer and now the state government will examine the report.

Centre stays appt of 7 new directors in smart city cos Jaipur: In a setback to Rajasthan government, the Centre has stayed the appointment of seven new independent directors in Jaipur, Kota, Udaipur and Ajmer smart city companies.

Following complaints against the appointments, the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has put the appointments on hold

till the inquiry related to these appointments is done.

Sources said that it was complained to the Central government that those who were appointed as independent directors in Smart City did not have any special experience in matters related to town planning or urban development.

Develop industrial areas at sub-division level on priority: CS First India Bureau Jaipur: Chief Secretary Niranjan Arya on Tuesday, said that all the Collectors should do the work of developing industrial areas at the sub-division level on priority and ensure that its land is allotted at the earliest. Arya was holding a review meeting with all the Divisional Commissioners and Collectors on various issues of Environment, Revenue, Home and Food Security and Civil Supplies Departments through video confer-

encing.

Arya said that setting up of industrial area at subdivision level is a budget announcement and following the instructions of Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, all the District Collectors have to do this work on priority. He further added that this year new industrial areas are to be opened in 68 sub-divisions and the Collectors should continuously monitor this work. He said that advance action should be taken in two weeks by allotting land.

‘PLAN STRATEGY TO SETTLE REVENUE SUIT’ rya directed all the Collectors to seriously work towards disposal of pending revenue cases in the revenue courts. “A proper strategy should be made in this regard and the revenue department needs to monitor it continuously,” CS said. Arya directed that a comparative study of online & offline applications in Jamabandi and Girdawari should be done and its real time analysis should also be conducted. Arya also instructed to marke the revenue records of common roads in districts, disposal of pending cases related to allotment.

Women and weapons is as much a contentious issue as men & weapons and ‘gun control’ – the point is safety and responsibility have to go hand in hand!

e recently printed an edit in First India on how women in Afghanistan are taking to weapons to protect themselves against the Taliban and also a point a view about how Taliban had initially insisted on young girls and widows to pick up guns but later backtracked. A day later, I was in a discussion with some of my friends on feminism (one of my favourite topics by the way!) when one of them commented that we, the women might think that carrying a weapon or knowing how to shoot is ‘self-defense’ but the fact is it is very sexy!

I was zapped! Why was a woman with a weapon classified as sexy? If a man with a weapon is considered dangerous then same should apply to women, no? I was further mystified when this point of view was echoed my most of the men I asked!

I recalled the famous statement by famous French New Wave filmmaker JeanLuc Godard that “All you need to make a movie is a girl and

gun!” Though he probably did not mean that she should be holding the gun but over the past decade movies showing women wielding weapons and as killing machines have been huge grossers. Ditto with the video games, it’s fast catching on.

Regardless of the jokes that if women shoot the way they drive, they will shoot themselves first, (I always reply that we learnt from the men how to drive / shoot, can’t help it if we had such poor examples?), gun ownership is fast catching on in single independent women abroad and trickling to Indian metros.

At one time picking up the weapon and seeking revenge on her own was a sign of putting the essential femininity of women aside and becoming masculine but in the modern real world weapons are ‘made’ especially for women which she is able to handle, carry and shoot confidently on her own though I am not sure having a pink coloured pistol adds anything to this part.
