he winds from the north arrive, strong as warriors and agile as dancers. They breathe snow over the mountains, whip up skyscraper waves on the high seas and blow mutely through the crowded city streets.

Winter arrives, the time of year for staying warm with our families, being cheerful in the morning mists of cities, and remembering the traditions of our forefathers.

The time for soft lights, whispered words, hot chocolate, open fires, red cheeks in crowded blocks of flats, halos of breaths at the bus stop and the quick footsteps under umbrellas strained against the wind.

And it will soon be time for Christmas, the holiday that time concedes to itself. A beginning and an end, a time for weighing up and giving presents, a time that welcomes and embraces differences in one feeling.

The end and the beginning barely touch and yet they dance in the same ballroom in one celebration.

rrivano i venti dal nord, forti come guerrieri e agili come danzatori. Soffiano neve in montagna e onde come grattacieli in alto mare e il richiamo in sordina, di entrambi, fra le vie affollate di città. Arriva l’inverno, arriva quello spazio del nostro calendario destinato alle abitudini, calde di famiglie, socievoli di città, tradizionali dei borghi.

Arrivano le luci soffuse, le parole sottovoce, la cioccolata calda, il fuoco nei camini accesi, le guance rosse nei condomini affollati, l’alone del respiro alla fermata del bus, i passi svelti sotto gli ombrelli inclinati controvento.

E arriva anche il Natale, la festa che il tempo concede a se stesso.

Il punto di ingresso e quello di fine, tempo di bilanci e di doni, tempo che accoglie i contrari e li abbraccia in un unico sentire.

La fine e l’inizio si toccano appena ma danzano nello stesso salone, quello delle feste.

Konya, capitale del surfismo e della danza roteante, ospita il festival dedicato a Mevlana, fondatore dei dervisci e della loro filosofia ascetica. Centinaia di uomini dalle lunghe tuniche e cappelli a tronco di cono volteggeranno insieme su se stessi, al ritmo di melodie meditative.

La tradizione fa risalire questa pratica ascetica agli insegnamenti del poeta Rumi, mistico del 13esimo secolo. Una festa spirituale, lontana mille miglia dagli scintillii del mondo occidentale.

f you happen to be in Ireland from August 10th - 13th, more precisely in the small city of Killorglin, you’ll have a chance to participate in the coronation of a king and queen. The trick is that the king is a goat and the queen is one of the most beautiful girls in the city.

Why so strange? Because according to legend, over the centuries the goat has accomplished many important feats in deciding the fate of the local population.

Since it’s a celebration, the day will be spent among horse races, show on the road, and, obviously, concerts and dancing of all kinds.

he Palio is the most important organized event in the city of Siena.

The different contrada, or rather the zones Siena is divided into, compete in a passionate horse race around the Piazza del Campo. Siena is currently divided into 17 Contradas: Aquila (Eagle), Bruco (Caterpillar), Chiocciola (Snail), Civetta (Little Owl), Drago (Dragon), Giraffe (Giraffe), Istrice (Crested Porcupine), Leocorno (Unicorn), Lupa (She-wolf), Nicchio (Seashell), Oca (Goose), Onda (Wave), Pantera (Panther), Selva (Forest), Tartuca (Tortoise), Torre (Tower), Valdimontone (Valley of the Ram). Each Contrada is distinguished by a unique coat of arms and colors, and occupies a particular area of the city. Walking throughout Siena, you can easily spot what Contrada you find yourself in by noticing the banners and coats of arms hung along the streets.

Dicembre è il mese ideale per visitare il Guatemala, se si desidera entrare in contatto con alcune delle sue feste più particolari. Nella Festa de Santo Tomas le più tipiche tradizioni degli antichi Maya si fondono con i riti tipici del cattolicesimo, per celebrare il santo patrono di questa pittoresca cittadina guatemalteca. Il culmine avviene il 21 dicembre con il rito del palo volador: coppie di acrobati si librano nell’aria stando in equilibrio su pali di legno altri trenta metri e roteando vorticosamente.

Una risposta laica al Natale che ogni anno attira qui 20mila spettatori. Un must fra gli eventi di dicembre in Europa.

omorrowland, nell’area ricreativa de Schorre, nella città di Boom è un festival di musica dance ambientato in un bellissimo luogo naturale.

Tomorrowland è attivo dal 2005 ed è diventato uno tra i più importanti festival musicali a livello mondiale.

Un mondo da favola, situato in uno splendido ambiente naturale, una location che evidenzia una forte attenzione per i dettagli e che presenta un arredamento incantevole con un’accogliente cocktail bar, spiagge estive e spettacolari fuochi d’artificio a fare da contorno. Uno spettacolo assolutamente indimenticabile e incomparabile condito con buona musica, incantevoli decorazioni, senza dimenticare: cibo sano e gustoso.

I costumi, le tradizioni così tipiche, l’incredibile vastità di religioni ci fanno immaginare l’India come un paese lontano dai nostri modi di divertirci e incentrato su stili di vita molto più orientali da questi punti di vista. Non è assolutamente così. Goa è dagli anni Sessanta l’angolo hippie dell’India contemporanea. Qui, ogni anno si svolge uno dei più grandi festival di electronic dance del mondo così fuori dagli schemi dell’India spirituale e meditativa a cui siamo abituati. I più grandi dj sulla piazza accorrono qui per folleggiare con più di 150mila persone. sano e gustoso.

his festival pays tribute to the encounter of two stars who were unlucky in love (Vega and Altair), and who can only meet on the seventh day of the seventh month. Tanabata, depending whether you follow the lunar or gregorian calendar, happens in August or in July: in any case, the festive atmosphere of the city is always unforgettable. Among the cities which celebrate Tanabata in August, the most famous is Sendai, location of the largest Tanabata in Japan. The festivities start on August 5th, with a fireworks display with outstanding colors, and continue until the 8th. Traditional washi paper decorations adorn the streets, squares, and buildings.

ust as in years past, the city of Naples brings out its best for a much loved religious feast, a tradition that blends belief and superstition in a suspenseful anticipation of the famous miracle of the liquefaction.

According to tradition the blood of Saint Januarius was gathered by a woman after his decaptiation in 305 AD and preserved in two small vials, which today are stored in a safe under double lock and key in Naples’ cathedral. On September 19th, the Feast of San Gennaro, the vials are displayed to the public near the altar and the blood they contain becomes liquid through the prayers and supplications of the faithful.

Hogmanay celebration Edimburh, Scotland Edinburgh Hogmanay (la parola scozzese che indica la vigilia di Capodanno) è un grande party all'aperto con un pubblico che conta fino a 150.000 persone provenienti da tutto il mondo. La festa dura tre giorni e tre notti e il suo acme è, ovviamente la notte di San Silvestro.

Una fetta del centro storico viene preso d’assalto da musicisti e spettatori in attesa della mezzanotte quando dal castello di Edinburgo si può assistere ad un meraviglioso lancio di bengala colorati. A seguire il bagno propiziatorio nelle acque gelide del River Forth, ma solo per i più coraggiosi.

fter a 20 year break, the Folklore Festival returns to Nice. Bigger and better than ever, as befitting the oldest international Folklore Festival in Europe, with the participation of numerous groups and with special mention reserved for China. Three local associations, Nice la belle, Ciamada nissarda and lou Cat, put the initiative back on its feet, while without doubt helping many other regional groups to enrich the range and scope of their work. 2017 will be the 61st edition of the festival, and surprises and world class events promise to be none too few.

ocal lore has it that the origin of this charming ‘battle’ was inspired by a single brawl that broke out between some teenagers back in 1945. Since then the event has been repeated annually, earning more and more popularity with every year, becoming one of the best known Spanish festival in the world. It takes place only 40 km from Valencia, in the small city of Buñol, and is always celebrated on the last Wednesday of August. Every year the streets of the city fill with music, merriment, and tomatoes. The ‘Tomatina’ is, in fact, a battle in which the participants clash with about 120 tons of tomatoes.

La città più pittoresca del Brasile è pronta a vestirsi a festa per il più scintillante tra gli eventi di dicembre: il Capodanno!

Rio de Janeiro festeggia in questa occasione non solo il nuovo anno ma anche Iemenjia, la dea del mare alle cui sorti e favori si affidano i cittadini brasiliani. Collane di fiori, candele, battelli addobbati a festa popolano le acque della costa, in segno di devozione.

La spiaggia più famosa della città, Copacabana, viene presa d’assalto dai cittadini vestiti di bianco, colore della fortuna e della speranza. Il ritmo di questa festa? Il samba, ovviamente!

I primi a festeggiare sono loro, gli australiani con la mezzanotte che scatta alle 14 ora italiana. Se volete distinguervi da tutti programmate un viaggio a Sidney, per vivere uno dei capodanni più belli del mondo. Sarà per il Sydney Harbour? o forse per la Light Parade? Ma non dimentichiamoci degli incredibili fuochi d’artificio che illuminano il Sydney Opera House. I motivi sono tanti per proclamare il Capodanno della capitale australiana come il più bello del mondo. Il programma del 31 dicembre è intenso e tutto da vivere.

he artist, designer and free thinker, Riccardo Fattori, works in art, fashion, communication and design for important companies and organisations. He lives and works surrounded by the immense iconography of Tuscany without being swayed by its rhetoric. He opposes classicism as much as modernity; his thoughts are sweet, untidy, universal and truly human. He is a collector of thoughts, of aesthetics and of many things while remaining faithful to a unique set of opinions, his own.

His works transform into narrative the most profound and sincere impulses of thought and feeling, his poetry never betrays its own coherence; it is crystalline, reflected, almost hygiene for the spirit.

Each of his visions is a stratified dizziness, kaleidoscopic, the depths of a simple soul. A turbine of inhomogeneous quotes, a chasm of signs where anyone can locate their own unique place for reading and participating.

His works are almost thaumaturgical, transforming logic into magic, stories into tales, corners into depths. He doesn’t know he is a maestro.

iccardo Fattori artista, designer e libero pensatore si è occupato e si occupa di arte, di moda, di comunicazione e di design per importanti aziende e organizzazioni.

Vive e lavora immerso nell’iconografia toscana senza sfiorarne la retorica. Opposto ai classicismi tanto quanto alla modernità, i suoi pensieri sono dolci e disordinati, universali, veramente umani. È un collezionista di pensieri, di estetiche e di tante cose che rimane fedele ad una sola opinione, la sua.

Le sue opere trasformano in narrazione i moti più profondi e sinceri del pensiero e del sentire, la sua poetica non tradisce mai la sua stessa coerenza, cristallina, specchiata, quasi igiene dello spirito.

Ogni sua visione è una vertigine stratificata, caleidoscopica, nelle profondità di un animo semplice. Un turbinio di citazioni disomogenee, una voragine di segni dove ciascuno è legittimato a individuare il suo unico percorso di lettura e partecipazione.

Le sue opere sono quasi taumaturgiche, trasformano ogni logica in magia, ogni storia in racconto, ogni angolo in profondità.

Non sa di essere un maestro.

very feast day has its own traditional foods. For many, the most important feast day is Christmas; indeed, a variety of delicacies and treats are only enjoyed during the Christmas period, which makes them even tastier and more exceptional.

Often, Christmas dishes are tied to the legends and traditions of the country where they originated.

The traditional Italian ‘pandoro’ was first eaten in the city of Verona, although the precise origins of the light and fluffy cake are lost in time; some say it was first invented at the time of the Venetian Republic in the 1500s while others think it was the result of the transformation of another typical cake from Verona, the star-shaped Nadali. Another hypothesis suggests it was derived from a typical bread eaten in Vienna, which was made with butter.

The Spanish Christmas dinner is very important and very rich.

The Roscón de Reyes is one of the oldest Christmas cakes; its origins may even predate Christmas and go back to pagan times.

During the Winter Holiday of Roman times, it was common to elect a ‘king’ of the feast. In order to do this a cake was made with figs, dates and honey and shared among the people and even the slaves. A dried bean was hidden in one of the cake’s slices, and whoever was lucky enough to find it became king of the feast. The tradition came to Spain when King Philip V introduced a similar tradition at Christmas. Nowadays, instead of a dried bean, small toys are hidden inside the cake, which is decorated with sugar and dried fruit.

In England, Christmas Dinner ends with a flaming Christmas Pudding, which is set alight thanks to a good dowsing of rum or brandy. There are many superstitions connected to the preparation of the pudding. For example, it contains thirteen ingredients, like Jesus and his disciples and during its preparation each member of the family must take a turn of stirring the pudding mix in an anti-clockwise direction to honour the arrival of the Wise Men. Inside the pudding are concealed coins which bring

utte le feste comandate hanno la loro pietanza tradizionale. Fra queste il Natale propone una varietà di prelibatezze e golosità che assaporiamo spesso soltanto durante questo periodo dell’anno. Ciò, di fatto, rende questi cibi ancor più gustosi e sensazionali.

Solitamente questi piatti sono legati a leggende e tradizioni del paese da cui provengono. Nella tradizione natalizia italiana, il pandoro trova la sua origine nella città di Verona ed è un dolce la cui storia si perde nella notte dei tempi: qualcuno riconduce la sua scoperta all’epoca della Repubblica Veneziana nel ‘500; altri invece pensano che questo dolce sia la trasformazione di un altro dolce tipico veronese, chiamato il Nadalin, a forma di stella. Un’altra ipotesi lo farebbe derivare dal tipico Pane di Vienna, ottenuto dalla lavorazione di un impasto burroso.

La cena del Natale spagnolo è per loro tradizione molto importante ed abbondante. Il Roscón de Reyes è uno dei dolci più antichi delle feste natalizie, anche se le sue origini sono prettamente pagane. Infatti durante le feste invernali ai tempi dei romani si usava eleggere un re della festa, e per farlo veniva preparata una torta con fichi, datteri e miele da dividere e distribuire al popolo e agli schiavi. Tra le varie fette si nascondeva un legume secco. Il fortunato che casualmente lo trovava era nominato re. Questa tradizione arrivò in Spagna, quando il re Filippo V decise di introdurla durante le festività natalizie. Nell'attuale dolce al posto del legume si nascondono piccoli giochi: il tutto è decorato con zucchero e frutta secca.

In Inghilterra, il simbolo delle festività natalizie è il Christmas Pudding, dolce solitamente servito assieme al rum o al brandy.

Curiose sono le superstizioni legate a questo piatto tipico: esso contiene ben tredici ingredienti, come Gesù e i suoi discepoli.

Durante la preparazione ogni membro della famiglia deve essere presente per girare l’impasto in senso antiorario, metodo questo usato per onorare l’arrivo dei Re Magi. All’interno del composto vengono inserite monetine di buon auspicio che faranno la fortuna di chi le troverà.

In Sweden, it is traditional for the oldest daughter of the household to dress in white with a crown of holly and bring sweets and coffee to the rest of the family. The Christmas feast is a buffet with a rich variety of foods, such as Christmas ham and caramelised potatoes. The typical dessert is risgrynsgrot, a rice pudding with an almond inside which is an extra treat for the person who finds it.

In Lithuania Christmas Dinner has twelve courses. Usually the feast begins when the first star appears in the sky and the host gives out bread to his guests. An empty place is set at the table in case a solitary wayfarer should turn up unexpected. Tradition has it that is bad luck to get up from the table before the feast comes to an end.

Mexico’s Christmas dish is Chiles en nogada, a very rich dish made with stewed meat and peppers, served with a cream of nuts and pomegranate seeds. The dish originated in Puebla, whose inhabitants are very proud of it; it is connected to the independence of Mexico.

The United States has a wide variety of different Christmas traditions. Christmas dinner is usually Turkey, vegetables and cranberry sauce. As in England, dessert is often Christmas pudding with brandy sauce and Mince pies, small pies filled with dried fruit, which according to tradition are a favourite of Father Christmas. Many children leave a mince pie or two near the fire place for Father Christmas to taste when he comes down the chimney with their presents.

In Svezia, tradizionalmente, la figlia più grande si veste di bianco con una corona di agrifoglio in testa e porta i dolcetti e il caffè ai suoi familiari. Il giorno di Natale si mangia in stile buffet, con un assortimento di cibi di vario tipo, tra cui il prosciutto natalizio e le patate caramellate. Il tipico dessert è il risgrynsgrot, un budino di riso al cui interno viene messa una mandorla, frutto di un regalo extra per chi la troverà.

In Lituania il pasto natalizio è composto da ben dodici portate.

Di solito si comincia alla comparsa della prima stella in cielo, con la padrona di casa che distribuisce il pane agli invitati. Si usa inoltre lasciare un posto vuoto a tavola, per eventuali viandanti solitari. Infine tradizione vuole che alzarsi da tavola prima della fine del pranzo porti cattiva sorte.

Il piatto natalizio del Messico è il Chiles en nogada. Si tratta di un piatto molto ricco a base di carne stufata e peperoni serviti con una crema di noci e chicchi di melograno. Tipicamente messicano e natalizio il piatto è originario di Puebla, i cui abitanti ne vanno molto fieri poiché legato all'indipendenza del Messico.

Sono molte e differenti fra loro le tradizioni del Natale negli Stati Uniti. La cena del Natale è in generale a base di tacchino, verdure e salsa di mirtilli. Come dessert troviamo spesso il Christmas pudding con salsa al brandy, e il Mince pies, torta di pasta frolla ripiena di frutta secca, che secondo la tradizione è il tipico cibo di Babbo Natale. Nella notte di Natale infatti le famose tortine vengono lasciate ai bordi del camino in modo che Santa Claus possa assaggiarle.

A strange Japanese Christmas tradition; Kentucky Fried Chicken

T

raditionally, Christmas is not celebrated in Japan where Christians make up only 1% of the population.

Nevertheless, in recent years, the Japanese have invented a Christmas tradition all of their own. On Christmas Day, many Japanese families gorge themselves on Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The craze has taken off to such an extent that if you don’t book in advance it is near impossible to find a table at a KFC restaurant.

The bizarre craze started in 1974 when the fried chicken company launched an advertising campaign over the Christmas period.

Since then millions of Japanese have spent Christmas chomping on buckets of the company’s famous (and practically only) food. By now the ‘tradition’ has been handed down through the generations, from parents to children and even to grandchildren.

Yasuyuki Katagi, Executive Director of an advertising agency, explained the incredible success of the KFC campaign: “The message is clear and always the same: at Christmas you eat chicken.”

Chicken at KFC has become a must for the Japanese at Christmas.

Una bizzarra tradizione natalizia giapponese: si mangia da Kentucky Fried Chicken per Natale

l Natale non è mai stato una ricorrenza molto sentita in Giappone e si stima che i cristiani giapponesi siano circa l’uno per cento della popolazione.

Tuttavia, ormai da molti anni si è affermata una “tradizione” piuttosto bizzarra: il giorno di Natale, i giapponesi si concedono un’abbuffata di pollo della celebre catena Kentucky Fried Chicken. Durante la vigilia di Natale i KFC del Giappone sono pieni a tal punto che diventa veramente difficile per chi non ha prenotato un tavolo trovare posto.

Tutto ciò è merito di un’azzeccatissima campagna pubblicitaria che l’azienda “del pollo fritto” ha lanciato a partire dal 1974.

Questa pubblicità ha creato una tradizione natalizia giapponese che dura ormai da oltre quarant’anni, riproponendosi di generazione in generazione e di padre in figlio.

Yasuyuki Katagi, direttore esecutivo di un’agenzia pubblicitaria, ha spiegato il successo della campagna: “Il suo messaggio è chiaro ed è sempre lo stesso: a Natale si mangia il pollo.”

DI VITA, THE GREEN GOLD OF TUSCANY Di Vita, Oro verde di Toscana

he landscape of Tuscany is characterised by rows of olive trees that paint the hills with intense colours; the green and the purple of the ripened fruit mix with the silver leaves of the tree that for the Etruscans was ‘first among all trees’.

During the Middle Ages, the citizens of Siena, having learnt the wisdom of the Etruscans, covered the valleys and hills surrounding the city walls with olive groves. The trees provided a valuable source of food, while permitting the land to be cultivated with seasonal crops at the same time.

The company, Di Vita, has therefore benefitted from over a thousand years of history, producing oil of the finest quality, from the trees that surround the ancient walls of the City of Siena.

The company was born from a desire to recover the ancient olive groves surrounding the city, many of which had been abandoned, making them productive once again and bringing back a well-deserved splendour to the city that was chosen by Ambrogio Lorenzetti to represent Good Government in his allegorical painting.

espite the cold, or the heat, the festive season is always full of cheer with its bright lights, decorated branches and wreaths, red baubles and lit-up buildings; it doesn’t matter if you are celebrating Christmas in Chicago, Helsinki or Melbourne.

Chicago’s Christmas markets are curiously linked to German traditions with a similar feel to those of Nuremberg right down to the food and drink on sale. In the Daley Plaza – a small corner of this huge metropolis – you’ll find a genuine German Christkindlmarket. There are clocks and cuckoos and typical Bavarian decorations, as well as Christmas parades and concerts.

You could be in the heart of Nuremberg were it not for the backdrop of Chicago’s skyscrapers reminding you that you are in an American city.

You can’t visit Chicago at Christmas time without making a trip to the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink at Millennium Park and the huge tree in Daley Plaza with its hundreds of twinkling lights.

And now to Helsinki, where a white Christmas is almost a hundred percent guaranteed.

The Christmas season officially begins when the lights along Aleksanterinkatu – the city’s main shopping street - are switched on. Your eyes will be drawn towards the bright and spectacularly decorated shop windows as you walk along the street.

In the city centre, there is St. Thomas’ market with over one hundred and twenty stalls selling Finnish gifts, decorations, food and hot drinks in a happy, convivial atmosphere. You’ll find plenty of inspiration for presents from woolly hats to knitted gloves, wooden toys, candles and typical Finnish foods.

Despite the cold and the snow, the market radiates warmth and serenity to all those who come to spend Christmas in this magical place.

onostante il freddo o il caldo, il rituale è sempre quello: luci brillanti, rami d’abete e ghirlande, palline rosse ed edifici illuminati condiscono il Natale di Chicago, di Helsinki e di Melbourne.

I mercatini di Natale di Chicago sono curiosamente legati alla tradizione tedesca e rassomigliano a quelli di Norimberga, perfino nel cibo e nelle bevande servite. Nella Daley Plaza - un piccolo spicchio di questa grande metropoli - si festeggia quindi un vero e proprio Christkindlmarket tedesco. Il mercatino made in Germany, con tanto di orologi a cucù ed oggettistica natalizia in tipico stile bavarese, offre anche varie parate e spettacoli musicali.

La situazione è affascinante, poiché, immersi in una Norimberga in miniatura, basta alzare gli occhi al cielo per rendersi conto di osservare i grattacieli più alti degli Stati Uniti d’America.

Due i must del Natale di Chicago: la storica pista di pattinaggio McCormick Tribune Ice Rink al Millennium Park ed il gigantesco Albero di Natale, che con le sue luci abbaglianti viene posto nella Daley Plaza.

Ci spostiamo adesso ad Helsinki: qua un bianco Natale è garantito quasi al cento per cento.

L’accensione delle luminarie su Aleksanterinkatu - la principale via dello shopping natalizio di Helsinki - considerata anche “la strada del Natale”, apre ufficialmente la stagione delle feste.

Addobbi spettacolari sulle vetrine dei negozi attireranno gli occhi di chi si troverà a passeggiare lungo questa via.

Il mercatino di St. Thomas si tiene nel centro di Helsinki. Oltre centoventi bancarelle offrono prodotti artigianali finlandesi, cibo, bevande calde ed un’atmosfera allegra e conviviale. In December temperatures are above thirty degrees but that doesn’t stop the city celebrating Christmas: adults go present hunting; children queue up to see Father Christmas in shopping malls (when it’s really hot he swaps his winter robes for Bermuda shorts); buildings are lit up and decorated; the scent of gingerbread and nutmeg floats in the air and Australian bakers bake traditional pies made with dried fruit.

Many of Melbourne’s Christmas markets are very similar to those in frostier climes.

For over sixty years the window displays of the famous department store, Myer, in Burke Street, have shown scenes from Christmas stories. By the side of the windows there are screens displaying the texts of the tales represented.

Melbourne’s City Square, off Swanston Street, is transformed into a Christmas village: in the centre of the square, there is a huge Christmas tree, decorated with red and silver baubles which is lit up every evening. Around the tree is a labyrinth of hedges which lead to a nativity scene. On the other side of the square is a Christmas signpost, indicating the way to other festive scenes, as well as to Australia’s other cities, and, of course, to the North Pole.

Qui, nonostante i trenta gradi, tutti si preparano alla festività: gli adulti vanno a caccia di regali, i bambini aspettano Babbo Natale, certe volte vestito con dei bermuda, nei centri commerciali, gli edifici si illuminano e si decorano, l’aria profuma di pan di zenzero e cannella e le pasticcerie sfornano i tipici dolci australiani, le tortine alla frutta secca.

Molti i mercatini di Natale allestiti nella città australiana che, fra le tante, festeggia il Natale in maniera più simile alla nostra tradizione.

Da ben cinquantasette anni il famosissimo grande magazzino Myer, situato in Burke Street, accoglie nelle sue vetrine una tipica storia di Natale: su piccoli schermi posti ai lati delle vetrine scorre il testo della fiaba natalizia, mentre nelle nicchie sono allestite le scene salienti del racconto.

Melbourne’s City Square, la piazza cittadina lungo Swanston Street, si trasforma nel quartier generale del Natale: al centro della piazza svetta un abete decorato con palline rosse e argento che viene illuminato ogni sera, attorno ad esso viene allestita una foresta-labirinto di siepe che conduce al presepe; l’altro lato della piazza ospita un palo natalizio con le direzioni da intraprendere per raggiungere le altre decorazioni, le città più importanti d’Australia e, immancabilmente, il Polo Nord.

e often visit Christmas markets to look for decorations for our tree. Indeed, market stalls are full of bright, shiny balls of every colour and size.

But have you ever wondered why we hang baubles on our Christmas trees?

There is a legend which tells of a poor street artist who was passing through Bethlehem in the days after Jesus was born, who wanted to make a gift to the baby. The problem was that the street artist was so poor that he had nothing to give. After several days, he decided to go to find baby Jesus and give him the only thing he had: his ability to juggle. When he arrived in from of the infant, he put down his juggler’s bag and pulled out some coloured balls which he threw spinning high into the air.

The baby laughed and laughed and the street artist was happy.

And so, when we hang baubles on our Christmas trees we should remember the laughter of baby Jesus.

La leggenda delle palle di Natale

olto spesso ci rechiamo ai mercatini di Natale in cerca di nuovi addobbi per il nostro albero. Palline di ogni colore, forma e grandezza riempiono le bancarelle scintillanti.

Ma vi siete mai chiesti perché le palline vengono appese agli abeti come decorazione?

La leggenda narra che un artista di strada molto povero, che si trovava a passare da Betlemme nei giorni seguenti alla nascita di Gesù, volesse andare a trovare il bimbo, ma non aveva niente da portargli in dono. Così, dopo qualche giorno di esitazione decise di recarsi alla grotta e di donare al bimbo l’unica cosa che possedeva: le sue abilità da giocoliere. Una volta davanti al pargolo, tirò fuori da una sacca alcune palline colorate ed iniziò a farle roteare con passione in aria. Il bambino rise di gusto e l’artista se ne andò soddisfatto.

Da quel giorno appendiamo palline all’albero di Natale per ricordare le risate del piccolo Gesù.

s far as Christmas is concerned, there are two types of people. There are those who love the Christmas atmosphere and enjoy nothing more than spending Christmas with their families and friends, and those who can’t wait to get away during the festive period to discover new places and experiences.

Nothing could be further from a traditional Christmas than the savanna of Kenya. The word safari means ‘journey’ in the Swahili language and a journey through Kenya’s most beautiful areas is an experience of pure emotion, the emotion of living in contact with nature.

A Kenyan safari is a once in a life time experience for those used to cold weather and snow at this time of year. You won’t need gloves, socks or woolly hats so much as flip flops, shorts and sun cream.

There are many organised safaris in Kenya which take you by mini-van to discover the savanna. You’ll see elephants, zebras and giraffes; you won’t want to stop looking at the horizon for a moment in case you miss a glimpse of these incredible animals. The best destination is Masai Mara, a beautiful nature reserve and the most famous of Kenya’s parks, which is on the border of Tanzania.

The park has a unique ecosystem, with large animal populations and spectacular scenery. Here, you can enjoy a fantastic holiday and encounter the famous ‘Big Five’; lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and buffalo, but also gnus, zebras, antelopes, hippopotami, crocodiles and many other species.

On safari, you really ‘live’ the savanna. At night, you sleep in small but welcoming and organised tents under the stars, where you’ll hear the sounds of the savanna in the dark: animals looking for food or water, the rustling of plants. Your guides will also entertain you with traditional songs and dancing, an ancient way of passing the time, after you have eaten, around the campfire.

This is the perfect holiday for combining adventure and relaxation; after the thrill of safari, you can allow yourself the pleasure of swimming in the sea and sunbathing in the area to the south of Mombasa. The most famous beach, which was voted the best in Africa in the most recent World Travel Awards, is Diani Beach, where you’ll find soft white sand and a breathtakingly blue sea.

Gedi is also interesting, a jewel of Swahili architecture dating to the XII century, which has been all but swallowed by the surrounding and impenetrable jungle. Whatever caused its inhabitants to abandon the city remains a mystery.

Dawn and dusk paint the savanna with colours which create a strange and suggestive atmosphere. The only sounds that accompany the closing of the day and the arrival of a new one are those of the natural landscape and its amazing inhabitants.

Kenya gives you the chance to experience a completely different, non-conventional Christmas, an original and unrepeatable adventure with sun, sea and nature in a land that is unspoilt and uncontaminated.

Niente di più bello per gli amanti del caldo di un safari natalizio nella savana del Kenya. Il termine safari, in lingua swahili, significa “viaggio”, che serve per vivere sulla propria pelle l’emozione del contatto fra uomo e natura.

L’esperienza è unica nel suo genere per chi è abituato a freddo e neve durante questo periodo dell’anno, ma in questo caso non avrà bisogno di guanti, calzini e cappelli in lana, e sarà d’aiuto avere in valigia infradito, bermuda e crema solare.

Molti sono i safari organizzati in Kenya, grazie ai quali si può salire su di un mini-van alla volta della scoperta della savana.

Qui, fra elefanti, leoni, zebre e giraffe, il turista, emozionato ed eccitato, manterrà lo sguardo fisso verso l’orizzonte, per non perdersi l’avvistamento di nessuno di questi animali. La location più indicata è il Masai Mara, una riserva faunistica bellissima e dunque il parco più famoso del Kenya, situato al confine con la Tanzania.

Stiamo parlando di un luogo con un ecosistema unico, ricco di animali e paesaggi spettacolari, dove potersi regalare una fantastica vacanza a contatto con i famosi Big Five, cioè leoni, elefanti, leopardi, rinoceronti e bufali ma anche gnu, zebre, antilopi, ippopotami, coccodrilli e molte altre specie.

Per completare l’esperienza non mancheranno suspense e momenti di tensione quando, dormendo la notte all’interno di pic-

cole ma accoglienti e organizzate tende in mezzo alla savana, il turista si troverà ad ascoltare i rumori ed i suoni che lo circondano: animali in cerca di cibo o di acqua, fruscio delle piante e molto altro. Le guide del safari propongono inoltre canti e balli tipici della zona, atti a passare il tempo la sera, dopo cena, intorno al fuoco.

Questa è la vacanza perfetta per unire insieme avventura e riposo: dopo il selvaggio safari, il turista può infatti concedersi un tuffo in mare e molto relax nelle terre a sud di Mombasa.

La spiaggia più famosa, eletta dagli ultimi World Travel Award come la migliore d’Africa, è Diani Beach. Qui, si può godere di una morbida sabbia bianca e di un mare di un azzurro mozzafiato.

Interessante anche Gedi, un gioiello di architettura swahili nato nel XII secolo, ma oggi città perduta ed inghiottita dalla giungla tanto da presentarsi quasi impenetrabile. Quello che ha portato al suo abbandono da parte della popolazione che l’abitava, resta ancora un mistero senza risposta.

L'alba ed il tramonto offrono colori che rivestono la savana di un’atmosfera particolare e suggestiva e gli unici suoni che scandiscono la fine della giornata ed il sorgere di quella nuova sono i rumori della giungla e dei suoi incredibili abitanti.

Si tratta quindi di passare un Natale molto poco tradizionale, ma originale, irripetibile ed anticonvenzionale, che prevede avventura, sole, mare, natura e spazi incondizionati ed incontaminati.

rom our first baby steps, walking gives us autonomy; it is a measure of our capabilities, our courage.

Walking means moving at the speed that our senses take in the world, giving them time and space to get hold of the realty that surrounds us, to observe, to understand and to enjoy it.

Let’s start with those first steps. Learning to walk represents one of our first tastes of freedom; falling over and getting up again, we learn to count on ourselves, to understand the limits of our own resources and spaces. When we trust the guiding arm of an adult we learn how to open ourselves up to new experiences.

As adults, we may underestimate these early traces that have filtered into our consciences from the first months of our lives, whose deeper meaning we never forget; indeed, they are always there waiting for us to reconnect with them.

Walking helps us reconnect with ourselves. As adults, we often walk to reflect, or to forget and it’s no coincidence. The sound of our footsteps and the rhythm of our breathing become instruments in a band, step by step we manage to find the centrality of our bodies in space and of the ‘I’ inside ourselves, we manage to listen to ourselves and what surrounds us in a more human and more authentic way.

Walking is a way to clear the mind from the visual and acoustic pollution of our daily lives. It won’t solve our problems, but it helps us focus; when we walk we can take things apart so we can understand them better.

Besides, walking has always been linked to thaumaturgy. Aristotle used to teach while walking under the colonnades of his school; his students were called peripatetic for this very reason.

In our crowded, noisy world, where speed and images dominate, walking has become a revolutionary, almost subversive act.

In this very moment, there are millions of walkers, wayfarers, wanderers, rovers, loafers, dawdlers and pilgrims who are criss-crossing the world on foot.

According to Lao Tse, even a journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.

Jesus was one of the first walkers, Muslims walked and still walk to Mecca and also Judaism, Buddism and Hinduism favour and promote pilgrimage as a means of individual reflection and social integration.

a i primi passi da bambini in poi, camminare è sinonimo di autonomia, di capacità, di coraggio. Camminare vuol dire muoversi alla velocità della nostra stessa attenzione, concedendole tempo e spazio per appoggiarsi sulla realtà che ci circonda e osservarla, comprenderla e gustarla.

Andiamo con ordine. Imparare a camminare è uno dei primi momenti di emancipazione, cadere e rialzarsi, lo impariamo da piccoli, significa contare su se stessi, saper definire le proprie risorse e i propri spazi. Affidarsi alla guida di braccia adulte significa saper imparare e

mettersi a disposizione dell’esperienza.

Da adulti sembriamo sottovalutare queste tracce sedimentate nelle nostre coscienze fin dai primi mesi della nostra vita. In realtà, non ci scordiamo mai del loro significato più profondo a cui sappiamo sempre ricongiungerci.

Infatti, camminare ci aiuta a riagganciare noi stessi. Da grandi lo facciamo tutte le volte che abbiamo bisogno di riflettere o, al contrario, di dimenticare. Non è un caso. Il rumore dei passi e il ritmo del respiro sembrano strumenti di una band, passo dopo passo riusciamo a ritrovare la centralità del corpo nello

Walking is good for us. Doctors are unanimous in advising walking as a prevention and as a cure. It keeps us fit, physically and mentally, it increases our productivity, stimulates our creativity and our capacity for detailed observation. Walking is the advancement of thought. Walking teaches us to be ourselves.

Camminare significa ripulire la mente dall’inquinamento visivo e acustico della nostra quotidianità, non risolve i problemi, ma certamente ci aiuta a focalizzarli, a scomporli, a comprenderli meglio. D’altronde camminare è da sempre considerato un momento taumaturgico. Aristotele insegnava camminando sotto i portici del Liceo e i suoi allievi si chiamavano peripatetici proprio per questo. Nel nostro mondo, affollato e chiassoso, dominato dalla velocità e dall’immagine, camminare è diventato un atto rivoluzionario e quasi eversivo.

Milioni di camminatori, viandanti, vagabondi, girovaghi, flâneurs, bighelloni, pellegrini solcano il mondo in ogni istante.

Un viaggio di mille chilometri comincia sempre con il primo passo, diceva Lao Tse. Gesù fu uno dei primi camminatori, i musulmani andavano (e vanno) alla Mecca ma anche l’ebraismo, il buddhismo e l’induismo hanno sempre favorito e promosso il pellegrinaggio come strumento di meditazione individuale e aggregazione sociale.

Camminare, a volte, ha un significato politico e coincide con marciare: marce di protesta (come la Marcia di Gandhi, nel 1930, per protestare contro la tassa britannica sul sale), marce della pace (la Pellegrina della Pace americana che nel 1953 fece voto di continuare a camminare finché il genere umano non avesse imparato la via della pace e che camminò per 28 anni e morì in uno scontro frontale), marce contro la Guerra, marce per i diritti civili (le marce delle suffragette e quella di Martin Luther King a Birmingham nel 1963), marce delle Madri intorno all’obelisco della Plaza de Mayo, che, per non incorrere nell’accusa di occupazione abusiva di suolo pubblico dovettero alzarsi e camminare in circolo, e ancora scioperi e cortei e processioni. Camminare fa bene. Sono molte le discipline mediche che convergono sul tema sia dal punto di vista terapeutico che dal punto di vista preventivo. Camminare aiuta a mantenersi in forma e attivi fisicamente e mentalmente, migliora la produttività, stimola la fantasia, la creatività e la capacità di osservazione.

Il cammino è il progredire di un pensiero. Camminare ci allena a saper essere noi stessi.

he street of Via San Gregorio Armeno in Naples is famous for its ‘presepi’, traditionally crafted nativity scenes representing baby Jesus in the manger, the holy family and their visitors. The street’s workshops are open all year, but it is in the festive season, as people begin to prepare their own presepi at home, that tourists and Neapolitans flock to the street.

The Neapolitan ‘presepe’ is as much a symbol of the city’s Christmas traditions as games of tombola and dinner on Christmas Eve. The history of the San Gregorio Armeno presepi is tied to the church of the area. In Roman times, the street was the site of a temple devoted to Ceres, the goddess of the grain harvest, on whose foundations the medieval Christian church was built. In pagan times, the local population would offer terracotta statues to Ceres, which were made in workshops near the temple.

Some believe that these little statues are the origins of the Christian practice of representing the birth of Jesus with figurines.

It is not difficult to find Via San Gregorio Armeno; it connects the Decumani and serves as a junction between the Decumano Maggiore, the present day via dei Tribunali and the Decumano Inferiore, commonly called Spaccanapoli, at via San Biagio dei Librai. A pleasant way to arrive is to start at the Duomo and walk through the Spaccanapoli quarter, where you can immerse yourself in the city’s art, history, tradition and culture.

When you first see the quantity of products on offer in the street, you’ll be amazed. You can find everything you could possibly need for creating your own nativity scene. There are boxes made of cork and of cardboard with various dimensions, mechanical models of windmills and waterfalls, hand-painted terracotta shepherds and larger statues with hand-sewn clothes.

You’ll find statues of the Holy Family, the Three Wise Men and shepherds as well as of cows and donkeys of every size, quality and price.

These days, you’ll also find more irreverent versions of the shepherd statuettes, with the caricatured faces of famous politicians or celebrities. Naples’ craftsmen are really on the ball, managing to produce up-to-date statues of people in the news, often with a satirical slant on why they are making headlines.

You’ll find, for example, dozens of little Maradonas, in Naples football shirts and a ball at their feet, alongside rows of the Clean Hands judge, Di Pietro, with the ranks of public figures he condemned during the Tangentopoli political scandal.

The workshops are full of materials and statues for putting together your own presepe, but if you prefer to buy a ready-made nativity scene you’ll find plenty on offer.

Prices start at around thirty or forty euro for more simple models with small figurines and go up to thousands of euro for high-quality representations based on classical pastoral models from the 1700s.

During the run-up to Christmas, the coming and going of people in Via San Gregorio Armeno is incredible; there is nothing like its magical atmosphere and it’s easy to spend hours delighting again and again in the hundreds of representations of the birth of Jesus.

ia San Gregorio Armeno è la famosa strada di Napoli dedicata all’arte presepiale. Qui, le innumerevoli botteghe degli artigiani del presepe sono aperte tutto l’anno, e sono tappa obbligatoria sia dei turisti sotto Natale, sia degli stessi napoletani prima della costruzione del loro presepe.

Il presepe napoletano, insieme alla tombola ed al menu della cena della Vigilia di Natale, è infatti uno dei simboli più intensi della tradizione natalizia a Napoli.

I presepi di San Gregorio Armeno hanno una storia che è legata proprio a quella della chiesa presente nel luogo. Sembra che al tempo dei romani la zona fosse sede di un tempio dedicato a Cerere, la dea delle messi, tempio poi crollato ed al posto del quale venne costruita appunto la chiesa. Alla divinità la popolazione locale offriva delle statuette in terracotta, realizzate nelle botteghe di artigiani ben diffuse su questa strada. Ecco per alcuni spiegata la nascita del presepe napoletano.

Arrivare in questa via non è difficile: risulta essere un collegamento tra i Decumani e funge infatti da raccordo tra il Decumano Maggiore, l'odierna via dei Tribunali, ed il Decumano Inferiore, comunemente chiamato Spaccanapoli, all'altezza di via San Biagio dei Librai. Si può quindi partire dal Duomo e percorrere poi l’intero quartiere di Spaccanapoli, dove poter ammirare arte, tradizione, storia e cultura napoletana, in direzione San Gregorio Armeno.

Una volta arrivati a destinazione, la quantità di prodotti presepiali presenti nelle varie botteghe vi lascerà a bocca aperta. In questa via potete trovare di tutto per il vostro presepe: dalle casette di sughero o di cartone in varie dimensioni, agli oggetti meccanici come mulini a vento o cascate, dalle statuine dei pastori in terracotta dipinti a mano a quelli alti ben trenta centimetri con abiti in tessuto cuciti su misura.

Naturalmente le statuette della Sacra Famiglia, dei Re Magi, del bue e dell’asinello sono costruite in ogni possibile dimensione, fattura e prezzo.

Ma ormai da molto tempo, gli artigiani del posto hanno creato una tradizione nuova, cioè quella di creare statuette di attuali e famosi “pastori”. Stiamo parlando di statuette, o per meglio dire caricature, dei politici o dei vip del momento. Alcuni artigiani infatti, non appena un personaggio sale alla ribalta della cronaca, ne creano il relativo pastore, spesso enfatizzandone qualche particolare legato all’evento che lo ha reso famoso.

Esempi sono la classica statuetta di Maradona, con la maglietta del Napoli e con il suo pallone, oppure quella del giudice Di Pietro e della schiera di politici condannati durante l’era di Tangentopoli.

Gli artigiani offrono materiale per creare od espandere il proprio presepe, ma chi vuole può naturalmente comprare un presepe già fatto, montato ed addobbato a dovere.

I prezzi partono dai trenta o quaranta euro per i modelli semplici con piccole statuine, fino ad arrivare alle migliaia di euro per le immense realizzazioni basate sulla riproduzione dei classici pastori del Settecento.

La calca ed il viavai di persone è impressionante e vi troverete immersi in un clima natalizio da favola, che vi farà ripercorrere, tappa dopo tappa, l’incredibile storia della nascita di Gesù.

What have you done in the past and what are you doing now?

Years ago, I thought I was working in fashion, now I know that even then I was only trying to be myself. To make what I am saying clearer, I should say that I make clothes and accessories, abstract art, photography; I write poetry; but I don’t feel I can define myself as a stylist, an artist, a photographer or anything else, I feel I am an interpreter of an ancient language, that of the heart, of feelings, of emotions. I translate myth into objects,

Anni fa credevo di occuparmi di moda ed arte, ora so che anche allora cercavo unicamente di essere me stessa. Per rendermi più facilmente comprensibile dovrei dire che faccio abbigliamento ed accessori, arte astratta, fotografie, scrivo poesie, ma non sento di potermi definire come una stilista, artista, fotografa o altro, sento di essere un'interprete della lingua più antica, quella del cuore, dei sentimenti, delle emozioni. Which cites have you lived in?

Varna and Sofia (both in Bulgaria), for a short time in GarmischPartenkirchen (Bavaria), and for the last twelve years I have lived in Florence.

When in your life did you decide to make a revolutionary change?

When I realised it was really stupid to try and change myself to conform to what society expected of me. I moved to Sofia, not in search of perfection, but to find a place where I could hear the dialogue between the place and my silence and vice versa.

Now I can say that I have found it, but it isn’t only a question of geography, it’s a question of tuning.

What did you expect before you moved to Florence? Are you disappointed or satisfied?

I came to Florence to study fashion design. I didn’t think I would stay that long, I came to finish my studies, but when I arrived, behind the dramatic patina of time and the ethereal poetry of the spirit of the Renaissance city, I discovered a tunnel that leads to the centre of my heart. Florence, for me, besides the visible works of art, is the silent keeper of an invisible energy that for a certain type of sensitivity is strongly perceptible. This energy sets free in your being the four elements, it’s pure alchemy.

In quali città ha vissuto?

Varna e Sofia (entrambe in Bulgaria), per un breve periodo a Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Monaco di Baviera), gli ultimi 12 anni li ho trascorsi a Firenze dove vivo tuttora.

In quale momento della tua vita hai deciso di rivoluzionarla?

Quando mi sono resa conto che è veramente stupido cercare di modificare se stessi per rientrare nei canoni richiesti dalla società e quindi mi sono trasferita a Sofia, non alla ricerca delle condizioni perfette, ma per trovare il posto dove poter udire il dialogo tra il luogo ed il mio silenzio e viceversa. Oggi posso dire di averlo trovato, ma non sono più certa che si tratti solo di geografia, è una questione di sintonia.

Cosa si aspettava prima di trasferirsi? Delusa o soddisfatta?

Sono venuta a Firenze per studiare fashion design. Immaginavo una permanenza breve, tanto per terminare gli studi, ma al mio arrivo, dietro alla patina drammatica del tempo e la poesia eterea dello spirito della città Rinascimentale, ho scoperto un tunnel che mi ha condotto al centro del mio cuore. Firenze per me oltre a tutti i capolavori visibili custodisce silenziosamente un'energia invisibile che per un determinato tipo di sensibilità è fortemente percettibile. Tale energia sprigiona nell'essere i quattro elementi, è alchimia pura.

Come è cambiata la sua identità?

Poco e tanto. Ho accentuato alcuni tratti, ne ho abbandonati altri. Sono diventata più sobria nell’apparenza e più severa nell’introspezione. Risponderei con alcune parole di Wim Wenders dal documentario su Yohji Yamamoto del 1989 Appunti di viaggio su moda e città “We live in the cities, the cities live in us... Time passes. We move from one city to another, from our country to another. We change languages, habits, opinions, we change clothes, we change everything. Everything changes.”

Quel che è rimasto immutato è il mio amore per il cambiamento, cambiare è essere in movimento cioè in vita ed io lancio il mio invito personale: cambia per vivere.

Si trasferirebbe di nuovo? Se sì, dove?

Direi di no, ma sono consapevole del “mai dire mai”!

Quali sono i posti dove non tornerebbe mai? Perché?

Il mondo oggi è piccolo, ben visibile in modo dettagliato pure nei punti più remoti anche solo su google maps allo stesso tempo rimane grande e realmente da vivere con tutto ciò che ha da offrire, mentre la vita è relativamente breve per una natura curiosa. Per questo motivo generalmente prima di ritornare in un posto, sceglierei di scoprirne uno nuovo, nonostante ciò tornerei ovunque. Mi piace scoprire e riscoprire. Pure i cicli della natura in quanto possano sembrare ripetitivi sono sempre nuovi, mai gli stessi. Niente è univoco, niente è fermo e sono certa che può sorprendermi ancora ed ancora.

How has your identity changed?

Not very much and a lot. I have emphasised some traits and I have abandoned others. I have become more serious on the surface and more severe in my introspection. I would answer with the words of Wim Wenders from the 1989 documentary on Yohji Yamamoto, Notebook on Cities and Clothes “We live in the cities, the cities live in us... Time passes. We move from one city to another, from our country to another. We change languages, habits, opinions, we change clothes, we change everything. Everything changes.”

The thing that has remained unchanged is my love for change, change is being in motion and being alive and so I offer my personal invitation: change to live.

Would you move again, and if so, where?

I would say no, but I am aware that you should never say never!

Are there any places you would never go back to? Why? Today the world is small, visible in detail in the most remote places, even if only on google maps, at the same time it remains big with all the experiences it has to offer, and life is relatively short if you have a curious imagination. For this reason, rather than going back to a place, I would choose to discover somewhere new, even though I would like to go back everywhere. I like to discover and to re-discover. Even the seasons of nature, which may seem repetitive, are always new, never the same. Nothing is univocal, nothing is still and I am still sure that I will be surprised again and again.

re you a shopaholic, especially in the run-up to Christmas? Well, you still have time to organise a short break in a city where the spirit of Christmas shopping is celebrated in style.

Where better than New York? If you have visited the Big Apple in December, you will know that this period is the most beautiful time of year in this splendid, chaotic and fascinating city.

The city that never sleeps is transformed with coloured lights, Christmas trees, decorations and yuletide music. There are trees for sale on the streets and Christmas shows on Broadway. The fantastically creative window displays of New York’s Department Stores turn the city into a festive art gallery, and none more so than Barney’s. Father Christmas and his elves welcome visitors into the luxurious emporium of high fashion on 61st Street and Madison Avenue. The store’s windows are always a little crazy: real skaters twirling, sculptors chipping away at blocks of ice to create Christmas scenes. Three years ago, Baz Luhrmann, director of Moulin Rouge and his wife, the Oscar winning costume designer, Catherine Martin, created Barney’s Baz Dazzled for the store. They staged spectacular animated displays with contortionist elves, singers and the hypnotic sculptures of Anthony Howe. A metal owl presided over the celebrations, inviting visitors to enjoy the Christmas fun by singing “Holiday” by Madonna. The whole enterprise was a combination of festive flair and technical genius which involved a lot of research and hard work. Coming out of Barney’s, the streets are decked with coloured lights which wind along the avenues and around the shop windows, leading you to the enormous Christmas tree dec-

Siamo a New York. Se siete venuti in vacanza nella grande mela a dicembre allora saprete già che questo periodo è il più bello dell'anno in questa splendida, caotica, affascinante metropoli.

La città che non dorme mai si colora di tante lucine, alberi di Natale, decori, musiche natalizie. Per strada si vendono gli alberi da addobbare, i tanti teatri offrono spettacoli a tema.

Continuiamo ad esplorare le vetrine natalizie dei grandi departent stores. Ci troviamo da Barney’s. Babbi Natale ed elfi ci accompagnano nel lussuoso emporio dell'alta moda che si trova alla 61ma Strada e Madison Avenue. Le sue vetrine sono sempre molto alternative: pattinatrici che danzano dal vivo, veri e propri laboratori del ghiaccio dove un artista scolpisce sculture e le trasforma in simpatici personaggi. If you choose to go London at Christmas, you won’t regret it.

From the retail heart of the city, Oxford Street, to the more luxurious Knightsbridge, there are brightly lit shops full to the brim with everything you could desire. There is something for everyone, from high street chains like Topshop to department stores like Selfridges or Liberty to the world-famous Harrods. The window displays of Harrods are always spectacular, over the years they have often taken inspiration from fairy tales. All the top brands are on display: Miu Miu, Burberry, Chanel, Balenciaga, Stella McCartney, Dior, and the windows are full of clothes, accessories and gifts. In past years, there have been teddy bears waiting in golden boxes at the theatre, a circus with acrobats on trapezes and an army of mice working on a production line to get the final orders for Christmas Eve ready for delivery. In 2015, there was a strong man straining to lift bags from the new Bottega Veneta collection in a magical puppet theatre. At Harrods, the

stage is always set for a great celebration, with animals in livery and fairy-tale figures like Peter Pumpernickel.

While adult shoppers are fascinated by the high-quality brands on display in the Harrods windows, their children are undoubtedly more interested in the delightful animal scenes. This year at Harrods, there will also be an extra touch of Italian style. From the 2nd of November to the 28th of December there will be an Italian Christmas market organised by Stefano Dolce and Domenico Gabbana inside the department store’s lacquered walls. To welcome visitors to the market there will be a Christmas tree, not decorated like a flea market, but festooned with gold ribbons and coloured lights.

Dal 2 Novembre al 28 di Dicembre, il duo allestirà un Mercatino di Natale all’Italiana all’interno delle pareti laccate dei grandi magazzini di lusso Harrods.

From ankle boots to rugby boots: Le Medicee, women’s rugby in Florence Dai tacchi ai tacchetti: le Medicee, il rugby femminile di Firenze

e met Enrico Taddei and Sebastian Rodwell in Florence, at the entrance to the corridor leading to the pitch where Le Medicee, train and play.

Enrico, the Florentine scrum-half, is the team’s trainer; Sebastian, born in England but by now equally at home in Tuscany has caps for England and Italy and has played for England Students and England Counties. He is marketing director for Le Medicee. Both have a passion for rugby, its raw emotion, the sweat, the scrums, the tries, the conversions. Women’s rugby has yet to win the following it deserves in Italy, but as Enrico and Sebastian explain many women, like those who play for Le Medicee, are drawn to the thrill of strong, primitive emotions that are difficult to experience in other sports.

Rugby is the desire to run hard, to play hard, to compete, to smell dirt, to make each game count, without looking back, without being afraid.

bbiamo incontrato Enrico Taddei e Sebastian Rodwell a Firenze, accanto al corridoio che porta al campo dove si allenano e giocano Le Medicee. Fiorentino, mediano di mischia, nonché allenatore della squadra il primo; inglese di nascita ma toscano d’adozione il secondo, con un passato nelle giovanili della Nazionale Italiana e in quella Inglese con England Students e England Counties. Entrambi uniti dalla passione per il rugby, quell’altalena di sensazioni, fatte di sudore, mischie e mete trasformate. Uno sport che soprattutto nella sua controparte femminile è poco capito, non ha ancora ricevuto il giusto spazio. Enrico e Sebastian ci spiegano come invece in questo campo, un gruppo di ragazze ritrovano quelle primitive, sensazionali emozioni che oggi forse in altri sport non si provano più. Quella gran voglia di correre, di gareggiare, di competere, di “annusare” l’erba, di rendere ogni campionato più avvincente, senza mai tirarsi indietro, senza mai aver paura.

Enrico, who are Le Medicee?

Le Medicee began with “Rugby Sevens”. They began playing women’s rugby in 2012, with the name Firenze Rugby 1931.

The team, which has a good mix of young athletes and more experienced players, competes in the Tuscan round of the Coppa Italia Seniores Femminile. The game they play is Rugby Sevens, which has finally become an Olympic discipline.

What exactly is Rugby Sevens?

Rugby Sevens is fast and spectacular. There are 7 players on the field, with 5 on the bench. All conversion attempts are drop-kicked; there are no place-kicks. The team which has just scored kicks off (rather than the conceding team as in rugby union). The team has three forwards, a scrum-half and three three-quarter backs.

Does women’s rugby still have to fight prejudice?

Unfortunately, yes. Many still see the sport, like other contact sports, as an exclusively male sport, forgetting the battles and difficulties that women face every day with determination.

Rugby gives women the chance to channel this energy into a tough sport which doesn’t let you look back, fighting a common battle with their team.”

What are your aims?

From a technical point of view, this year we want to build strong foundations, starting with the basic skills. Often, rugby is seen solely as a combat sport, forgetting the importance of speed. Getting past a good defence is not only a question of physical collision but involves other skills such as dexterity and evasiveness. Here in Florence we want everyone to be able to play rugby, rugby is a sport for everyone.

Who’s on your staff?

Apart from me as trainer, Luca Martin who accompanies the team when they play, our team manager and head of women’s rugby Elisabetta Salucco and Flavia Albani, who is our athletics trainer.

Sebastian, how would you describe rugby in Italy today?

Rugby in Italy is becoming more popular and more widely played, but we are a long way from it becoming an integral part of Italian culture. A good first step is to make it possible for everyone to play, something which is becoming a reality in Tuscany which offers a lot of options. With Le Medicee we decided to play Rugby Sevens, which is different from rugby union, but shares the same principles.

Describe the team spirit.

Having fun and being part of the group above all, but rugby is a sport that demands commitment and so having a laugh can’t always be a priority. Satisfaction is very important.

Enrico, chi sono Le Medicee?

Le Medicee riprendono il cammino dal Rugby a 7, l’inglese “Rugby Seven”. Questa squadra ha esordito nel rugby femminile nel 2012, quando si chiamava Firenze Rugby 1931. Il gruppo ha il giusto mix di atlete giovani e più esperte, che vanno a disputare la Coppa Italia Seniores Femminile, girone toscano.

La versione delle gigliate è la versione Sevens, quella che è finalmente disciplina olimpica.

Cosè il Rugby a 7?

Il rugby a 7 è veloce e spettacolare. Le giocatrici sul campo sono appunto 7 e altre 5 sono in panchina. La trasformazione di una meta avviene calciando in drop e non è prevista la possibilità del calcio piazzato, mentre la squadra a riprendere il gioco dopo la realizzazione di una meta è quella che l'ha realizzata (a differenza del rugby union in cui inizia il gioco la squadra che subisce la meta). Le squadre sono composte da 3 avanti, il mediano di mischia, e 3 trequarti.

Nel rugby femminile si lotta ancora contro i pregiudizi?

Purtroppo sì. Questa disciplina si trascina dietro i retaggi tipici degli sport di contatto, ritenuti esclusiva del genere maschile dimenticando le battaglie che le ragazze portano avanti nella vita quotidiana con determinazione tra mille difficoltà. Il rugby dà loro la possibilità di incanalare questa energia in uno sport duro in cui tirarsi indietro non è un opzione facendo parte di un percorso comune a tutte le compagne.

Quali sono i vostri obiettivi?

Dal punto di vista tecnico il nostro obiettivo per quest'anno è costruire delle solide fondamenta partendo dalle skills di base.

Spesso il rugby è visto unicamente come sport di combattimento dimenticandosi quanta importanza abbia la velocità e la capacità di battere la difesa non solo con lo scontro fisico ma anche con caratteristiche quali destrezza ed elusività. Qui a Firenze diamo la possibilità a tutti la possibilità di mettersi in gioco, il rugby è uno sport per tutti.

Come è composto il vostro staff?

Il nostro staff è composto da oltre che da me come capo allenatore, dall’accompagnatore Luca Martin, dal team manager e responsabile rugby femminile Elisabetta Salucco e da Flavia Albani, che è la nostra preparatrice atletica.

Sebastian, come definiresti oggi il rugby in Italia?

Il rugby in Italia sta crescendo, ma ci sono ancora tantissime cose che devo essere fatte prima che questo sport diventi parte integrante della cultura italiana. Sicuramente il primo passo è dare l’opportunità di praticare questo sport a tutti colore ne abbiamo il desiderio e in Toscana le opzioni cominciano a esserci. Con le Medicee abbiamo deciso di lavorare con il rugby a 7, una versione diversa dal rugby a 15, ma che ne condivide gli stessi principi.

Qual è lo spirito della squadra?

Divertimento e appartenenza al gruppo prima di tutto, ma anche consapevolezza che il rugby è uno sport che richiede impegno e quindi il divertimento non può essere sempre una priorità. La soddisfazione sì però.

Heart surgery in the space age Un cuore spaziale

N

ew discoveries are made by imagining the future, sometimes in the most fantastic ways like Jules Verne and Leonardo da Vinci, whose iconic visions have given so much to humanity.

For many years, Eugenio Neri has worked almost exclusively in aortic surgery, a new specialisation that is the child of cardiovascular surgery. The discipline was born in Texas, in Houston, where top surgeons were working on ground-breaking techniques, technology and materials for complicated heart and aortic operations at the same time that NASA scientists were developing new ways to explore space.

The heart represents a surgical frontier: it is separated from the skin by only a few centimetres of the chest wall. These few centimetres have represented a huge barrier in the history of medicine, as, in order to ‘violate’ them successfully, surgeons have needed to invest a great deal of time, imagination, genius, modern technology and vision.

It takes a certain type of genius to imagine stopping the heart, substituting it with a machine that circulates the blood and puts the body into hibernation so that a blood vessel can be replaced with a prosthesis made from the same material as spacesuits.

Eugenio Neri si occupa da molti anni ed in maniera quasi esclusiva, di chirurgia dell’aorta, una specialità che di fatto non esiste, figlia sia della cardiochirurgia che della chirurgia vascolare.

Nasce in Texas, a Houston, dove alcuni giganti della chirurgia mettevano a punto tecniche, tecnologie e materiali per operare sul cuore e sull’aorta proprio nello stesso periodo in cui, da Houston, si conquistava lo spazio.

Il cuore, una frontiera assoluta della chirurgia: separato dalla pelle da pochi centimetri di parete toracica. I centimetri più complessi della storia della medicina che per essere “violati” con successo hanno richiesto tempo, genio, immaginazione, modernità e visione.

Non è da tutti immaginare di fermare il cuore, sostituendolo con una macchina, il circolo sanguigno, ibernando il corpo, di rimpiazzare un vaso utilizzando una protesi fatta dello stesso materiale delle tute spaziali.

eyond the technical, scientific and organisational aspects of aortic surgery, which are dependent on a highly specialised team of doctors and specialists, there remains an almost primordial fascination with a field that is concerned with the functioning of the organ that keeps us alive.

Next to the most sophisticated machines, the space age materials and the most modern imaging techniques, the human being remains central and substantial.

Modernity lives alongside ancestral feelings and states; our lives are still built upon effort, stress, blood, action and sometimes rage and tears.

Operating on a patient, perhaps implanting the most complex and modern of prosthetics means facing up to mankind’s most primitive urges and gestures; something surgeons have done since their profession came into being.

This is not to say that cardiac surgery is an adventure; despite the complexity of the methods used and the importance of the structures involved everything proceeds according to a strategy which involves a careful evaluation of risk; the space left open to chance is limited and measurable. Cardiac surgery is never, however, routine surgery, despite what some journalists would have us believe.

In the best teams, operations are always carried out by two surgeons, both highly trained, tied together in a bond of trust, with a shared strategy, who reciprocally supervise one another’s every move.

The centre of major blood vessel surgery in Siena has given its name to a prosthesis which was designed 15 years ago. It is used in aortic arch surgery and its structure facilitates this type of procedure, which looks ahead to hybrid interventions that combine traditional techniques with less invasive methods such as endovascular surgery.

Prof. Neri had the original idea for the prosthesis, which was developed and produced by Graft. Current research is focused on less invasive, physiological surgery. The future, of course, has yet to be imagined but it is likely that doctors will be able to operate inside blood vessels using robotic probes, that they will be able to practice procedures on exact models, which they’ll use to explain the intervention to the patient and their family.

According to Prof. Neri, however, despite scientific advance, “We will never lose that primordial contact with man, with all his imperfections and sophisticated complexities that are the reason I chose the life I did.”

l di là gli aspetti tecnici, scientifici, organizzativi (si lavora in equipe), che sono una routine, la chirurgia dell’aorta, pur essendo calata in una dimensione fortemente tecnologica, conserva un fascino primordiale.

Accanto alla macchine più sofisticate, ai materiali e all’imaging più moderni, l’uomo ha ancora una sua centralità sostanziale.

La modernità convive con sentimenti e stati ancestrali, come la fatica, lo stress, il sangue, l’azione, talvolta la rabbia o il pianto.

Operare un paziente, magari impiantando la protesi più complessa, vuol dire fare i conti con la tensione e con gesti primitivi e questo capita a tutti i chirurghi da quando esiste questa professione.

Pur nella enormità dei mezzi impiegati e nella crucialità delle strutture interessate, un intervento di cardiochirurgia non è mai una avventura: piuttosto prevede una strategia, una valutazione dei fattori di rischio e lo spazio lasciato al caso è limitato e ponderabile. Quello che è certo che non esistono interventi di routine, come spesso fanno intendere i media generalisti.

Nelle migliori équipe tutti gli interventi sono condotti in coppia, da operatori completi, legati da un rapporto di fiducia, condivisione delle strategie e soprattutto da una supervisione reciproca su ogni gesto.

Il centro di chirurgia dei grossi vasi di Siena ha legato il suo nome ad una protesi, il cui disegno risale a circa 15 anni fa.

E’ una protesi che è impiegata per interventi sull’arco aortico e la sua conformazione facilita questo tipo di procedure, con uno sguardo rivolto ad interventi ibridi, ovvero condotti combinando tecniche tradizionali a tecniche meno invasive come quelle endovascolari.

L’idea, frutto dell’ingegno del Prof. Neri è poi stata sviluppata e prodotta grazie a Graft. Attualmente la ricerca è rivolta verso modelli di chirurgia sempre meno invasivi e sempre più fisiologici. In futuro rimane sempre da immaginare.

Probabilmente saremo in grado di operare all’interno dei vasi con sonde robotiche e visione attraverso il sangue. Potremo esercitarci prima delle procedure su modelli esatti del campo operatorio attraverso i quali spiegare bene al paziente e ai familiari la patologia ed il trattamento. Tuttavia il Prof. Neri sostiene che “Non perderemo quel contatto primordiale con l’uomo con tutte le sue imperfezioni e sofisticate complessità che è il motivo della mia scelta di vita”.

Chianti wine is among the most famous and esteemed in the world. Rows of vines in fields stolen from the woods seem suspended in the spaces between rocky outcrops.

Winemaking in Chianti has ancient roots. The mysterious Etruscans planted the first vines and under the Romans the area’s wine industry flourished.

The rich region between Siena and Florence has always been a desirable prize and Chianti has witnessed many ferocious battles. Lasting proof of the area’s violent history are the many examples of military architecture that can still be found incorporated into its rural settlements.

Farmhouses are often small fortresses, with ramparts and tall towers, or concentrated for protection in small fortified villages.

The cultivation of vines and winemaking continued to spread under the Medici who brought peace to the region. Michelangelo, Machiavelli and Galileo owned smallholdings in Chianti and made wine from their vines. The spirit of Chianti’s landscape which is so closely tied to its wine has always inspired fascination.

In recent years, Chianti has become a symbol of the whole of Tuscany. Its central position in the region, its ancient and varied culture, its shades and muted colours that change with the seasons, its rhythms, that are still dependent on the vines and their cultivation give the area an irresistible charm. A vibrantly international community now calls Chianti home, a strange imprinting between tradition and modernity. The area seems to have an overwhelming power to entice free spirits and thinkers.

The landscape is very varied: vines, olives, small hamlets, twists of high and rocky hills, majestic woods where eagles fly. Here, old men still don hats when they drive; oblivious to the pace of modern life, they are the true protagonists of this area.

La culla di un vino fra i più conosciuti e apprezzati al mondo. Campi striati di vite, strappati ai boschi e sospesi fra le pietre affioranti dal suolo.

L’area del Chianti affonda la tradizione per la produzione vinicola in tempi antichissimi. Fu il misterioso popolo etrusco a impiantare la vite in questa zona e furono i romani ad accelerarne lo sviluppo.

Da sempre zona di un confine ricco e conteso fra Siena e Firenze, il Chianti è stato campo di battaglie tanto memorabili quanto feroci. Ne siano prova tutti gli elementi architettonici tipici delle strutture militari ancora inseriti negli insediamenti rurali.

Il cuore vi ringrazierà per aver scelto di restare qui la prima volta che vedrete il bus giallo della scuola, stipato di vite ancora brevi e perciò irrinunciabili, dondolarsi fra le curve della strada e attraversare le righe rosse dei campi di vigna in autunno.

Da qui si capisce bene che il passato è stato vissuto per fare posto al domani.

The area in the south east of the Province of Siena is known as The Crete. Its landscape with its rolling wavelike forms recalls the sea, the crests of waves, the power of tides and the intensity of the sun’s rays on water. The rounded hills, bathed in a light that is pure and blinding, are no obstacle to the winds that whip across them.

Between five and two million years ago (during the Pliocene era) the whole area was indeed submerged.

The clay that is the fundamental component of the region’s soil is what remains of the ancient sediments that settled on the bottom of this prehistoric sea. If you walk through the area’s fields you often come across the fossils of giant shells.

The hilly territory has been worn down by the wind, softened and moulded over time and would resemble an almost lunar landscape were it not for the progression of colours that follow the seasons: brilliant green in spring, golden yellow in summer and grey in the barren seasons of autumn and winter.

When the autumn mists arrive, the hilltops float on cushions of white that hug the hollows, cypresses escape along white roads, while pines, oaks and brambles fight for space around hidden pools of water; the vegetation is scarce and the bare land lies exposed, like in a desert.

The area’s architecture is connected to the sharecropping system which operated here for centuries. Farmhouses, which were usually built on the tops of hills, were assigned to farming families who worked the surrounding land. The houses, usually made of brick, had two or more floors, with annexes and extensions added as the needs of the farm and its inhabitants evolved. Each farmhouse operated as an agricultural unit. Rationalising space and optimising resources were important considerations in the construction of buildings. The ground floor, often with high vault ceilings, was where the animals slept. Life on the upper floors revolved around huge fireplaces and bedrooms were positioned above the stables below to take advantage of the heat given off by the farm animals. The attic space under the sloping roof, where there were often dovecotes, was often used for storage or for seasoning cheeses and hams. The extra layer of air also added insulation. Farmhouses were built concentrically around the castle or great house on which they depended. Given the size of the territory, there were relatively few rural settlements in The Crete, an indication of how difficult it was to cultivate the clay rich soil. It is rare for properties from the area to come onto the market; those that do are incredibly sought after.

The Crete of Siena are extreme and strange, with immense horizons and soft curves. There are no shadows here and there is nowhere to hide.

Da 5 a 2 milioni di anni fa (Pliocene), l’intera area era sommersa dalle acque marine. L’argilla che costituisce la componente fondamentale di queste terre è il residuo delle sabbie e del fondale di allora.

Sono colline battute dal vento, smussate e addolcite dal tempo, che cambiano colori e dominanze con le stagioni: verde acceso di primavera, giallo oro in estate e grigio di terra brulla in autunno e inverno.

Paesaggio lunare per eccellenza.

Alture come sospese in aria su cuscini di nebbia appoggiati sul fondo degli avvallamenti, fughe di cipressi sulle strade bianche, querce, pini e rovi che si contendono lo spazio intorno ai fontoni, calanchi e biancane come in un deserto indigeno.

Lo sviluppo dell’architettura rurale di questa area deve tutto alla mezzadria, all’assegnazione delle case ai contadini che avrebbero poi coltivato la terra circostante l’abitazione, solitamente posta nel punto più alto del colle. Le costruzioni, per lo più in mattoni sono sempre strutturate su due o più livelli, presentano annessi e porzioni successive concepite per accogliere tutte le attività produttive dell’azienda agricola che ogni colonica costituiva. La razionalizzazione degli spazi e l’ottimizzazione delle risorse sono sempre state carattere distintivo della vita e del lavoro di campagna, l’architettura rurale non è esente dal medesimo spirito. Il piano terra, spesso più alto e con soffitti a botte accoglieva gli animali. Il piano superiore accoglieva le persone, si sviluppava intorno a focolari immensi decentrando le stanze da notte in corrispondenza delle stalle al piano inferiore per usufruire del calore emanato dagli animali. Il tetto a spiovente permetteva la realizzazione di mansarde, piccionaie e colombaie con la funzione multipla di isolamento termico, stoccaggio e stagionature di alcuni prodotti caseari o da macello, allevamento e produzione di concimi.

Le case coloniche si distribuiscono nel territorio in forma concentrica rispetto al castello o alla casa padronale a cui i mezzadri confluivano. Gli insediamenti rurali o patronali della zona delle Crete non sono numerosissimi, ogni colonica copriva un appezzamento di terreno piuttosto ampio che nell’economia agricola dei mezzadri avrebbe compensato la difficile coltivazione sulla creta. Le proprietà ancora disponibili sul mercato in questa area sono rare e preziose.

Le Crete sono un paesaggio estremo, di orizzonti immensi e di curve morbide. Qui non c’è ombra e non c’è riparo. Qui si gioca solo a viso e a carte scoperte.

There are still fascinating corners of Tuscany that remain largely undisturbed, places that seem to exist in another dimension of time and space, like Val D’Elsa, in the territory of Siena. The area lies to the north west of the city, stretching towards the lands near the sea.

It is home to monasteries, villages, castles, and small farms, that are scattered along the ancient pilgrim and trade route that crosses it. The Francigena road has connected Rome to the distant city of Canterbury since antiquity. The section of the road that leads to the castle of Monteriggioni is breathtakingly beautiful.

It is easy to walk the 4km to the castle and in high season the path is well beaten by trekkers and walkers from all over the world. The landscape is incredible; fields of golden corn, woods and fleeting glimpses of the castle.

Val D’Elsa and its inhabitants quietly observe the walkers and pilgrims who pass through the landscape.

It is a strange destiny for a place that is removed from the stresses of urban life to be constantly criss-crossed by a polyglot and cosmopolitan travelling community.

Despite their diverse origins, the people who come to Val D’Elsa are very similar, and it is no coincidence.

The types of traveller who choose to pass through or to stop in such a beautiful place, have the same values, the same love for a slow pace, for listening, watching and exploring the world and themselves.

Places like this are not easy to find, places whose beauty is poised and constant, where time is measured in millennia, where it’s impossible to ignore the centuries whispering their mysterious stories in your ear.

The landscape and its history are sovereign here.

Restoration work and construction in Val D’Elsa must be completely in keeping with the area’s traditions. Materials and building techniques are carefully chosen; new technologies and instruments are employed so as not to compromise aesthetics and there is ongoing philological research into the smallest details of architectural restoration. Living in or visiting these places is like being part of a painting of country life, a hardworking, all-encompassing life that has not changed since Leonardo used such scenes as earthly backgrounds to his divine subjects. Here, the trees, the towers and the vines have not changed or moved, they challenge time and its shifting opinions, giving priority to what resists, in an eternal equilibrium between the gothic and oligarchical city of Siena and the renaissance splendour of Medici Florence.

In Toscana esistono ancora angoli nascosti di grande fascino, tutti da scoprire. Luoghi che sembrano fluttuare in un’altra dimensione di tempo e spazio, come la Val D’Elsa, quella frazione della provincia di Siena che guarda a nord ovest e si protende verso la provincia del mare.

Monasteri, borghi, castelli e piccoli poderi lungo il cammino dei pellegrini, dei viandanti, dei commercianti di tutti i tempi. Da qui passa la Francigena, quel fascio di strade che fin dall’antichità conduceva a Roma dalla Francia. Bellissimo il tratto che arriva l’antico castello di Monteriggioni. Il cammino attuale, frequentato da trekker e visitatori di tutto il mondo è di facile percorribilità e si svolge per poco più di 4 km. Grandi distese dorate di grano, boschi e suggestivi scorci del castello.

Vivere un luogo simile vuol dire essere spettatori del passaggio di camminatori e pellegrini. Curioso destino di questo angolo di mondo: fuori dal turbinio della vita urbana ma comunque immerso in una fitta rete di relazioni poliglotte e cosmopolite. Qui le persone si assomigliano e non per caso. Passare o fermarsi in questo luogo vuol dire essere accomunati dalla medesima idea di bellezza, dai medesimi valori, dalla capacità di vivere piano, concedendosi il lusso di sentire, di osservare, di esplorare il mondo e se stessi.

Val di Merse is a land of woods and metals, of fast moving streams and of the high hills of the Maremma; it is the territory to the west of Siena which connects the city to the lands on the coast. It is rich in contrasting landscapes and ancient stories. The inhabitants of this place still carry the genes of their ancestors, the Etruscans, and the iron-red land still preserves the mysteries of this fascinating people.

Crossed by rivers, streams and rapids with an abundance of natural springs and spas, Val di Merse is a terrestrial Eden. Much of its territory is covered in woods, with valleys that suddenly open out into steep slopes of green fields. There are villages, castles and abbeys, each with its own stories and legends.

For centuries, these were borderlands where pan European influences merged.

A curious example of this cultural mix is the game Palla Eh!, invented here and ancestor of modern tennis, together with the French game Jeu de Paume.

The area’s many castles are testimony to its strategic importance. They had a military and economic role, serving both as garrisons and as centres for collecting and storing resources from the woods and mines.

Many places in Val di Merse are mentioned in legends and literature, and some also appear in films. The bridge, ponte della Pia, over the Rosia river, has Roman origins and is mentioned in the verses of Dante.

The now roofless abbey of Saint Galgano houses a sword said to have been planted in stone by the saint himself as a symbol of a new pacifist life. The abbey was also the location for parts of Andrej Tarkovskij’s 1983 film Nostalghia.

In this territory, silence spreads, along winding roads, where it meets a buzz of natural sounds, a chorus of swishing plants, gurgling waters and animals, from the largest to the smallest. Music and performance are ancient traditions here, bands and orchestras enliven village festivals and the area is home to one of the smallest theatres in Europe (the Risorti theatre of Radicondoli). The musical talent of the large numbers of musicians living in Val di Merse has far reaching consequences. To the north lies Montagnola, where bees make the most delicious honey. This land plays the sweetest music and bees nearby produce a honey that cannot be rivalled. It is no coincidence!

Di boschi e di metalli, di torrenti e di sorgenti termali, di colli alti protesi alla Maremma, così è fatta la Val di Merse. L’area a ovest di Siena, il suo gancio verso il mare. Un’area ricchissima di paesaggi contrastanti e di storie antichissime. Gli abitanti di questi luoghi conservano ancora le tracce genetiche dei loro più antichi antenati, gli etruschi e questa terra rossa di ferro ne custodisce gelosamente il mistero e il fascino.

Attraversata da fiumi, torrenti e ruscelli e puntellata di acque sorgive, terme naturali, angoli di un Eden terreno e raggiungibile. La Val di Merse è una distesa di boschi, di valli aperte su dirupi improvvisi, di verde fitto e di prati distesi, di borghi, castelli, abbazie, di leggende e di storia, di ponti e di passaggi. Questi luoghi sono stati per secoli un importante luogo di confine dove confluivano influenze pan europee fin dall’alto Medioevo. Ne sia un esempio curioso il gioco della Palla Eh!, antenato, insieme al francese Jeu de Paume dell’odierno tennis. Ne siano testimonianza i tanti castelli, presidi di difesa e di raccolta intorno ai quali era organizzata l’intera economia della zona centrata principalmente sulle risorse boschive e minerarie.

Alcuni suoi luoghi hanno avuto un posto d’onore nella letteratura, nella leggenda e persino nel cinema. Il ponte della Pia, sul torrente Rosia, di origine romana, reso celebre dai versi danteschi.

L’abbazia di San Galgano, luogo di eccezionale fascino che custodisce la spada nella roccia e porta con se tutta la leggenda di Artù e la Tavola Rotonda. Luoghi di oggi come un’istantanea sulla storia, che scelti anche dal regista poeta Andrej Tarkovskij, colui che ha saputo mutare il tempo in narrazione cinematografica.

E poi qui il silenzio si allunga su strade tortuose e diventa, addentrandosi nella natura una fruscio di suoni, come un coro di elementi: la vegetazione, le acque correnti, gli animali dal più piccolo al più grande.

La musica qui è una tradizione antica, la banda e le orchestrine animavano le feste da uno dei più piccoli teatri d’Europa (Il teatro dei Risorti di Radicondoli).

Il numero di musicisti residenti oggi nell’area della Val di Merse che confina a nord con la Montagnola è sintomatico di un legame non casuale con la storia.

Questa terra suona e il miele di bosco delle sue api non ha rivali, davvero.

North of Arezzo, bordering Romagna, is the Casentino valley through which the River Arno flows.

It is a mystic land, chosen by Saint Francis of Assisi as a place to meditate and pray, with a history that goes back to the Palaeolithic era and the Etruscan culture.

The Lake of the Idols, which lies 600m from the source of the Arno, has brought the Etruscan Era into our times. Thousands of votive offerings in the form of small bronze statues have been found in the lake, many of which are now in museums.

During the Middle Ages, Casentino was the site of many a vicious battle. Dante Alighieri fought in these lands. This is a land dominated by the mountains, by the peaks on the horizon, by the oblique rays of the setting sun as it lights up the woods of a hundred-yearold trees. This is where the golden eagle nests, home to owls and falcons, deer, wolves and boar. The fragile equilibrium between man and nature is based on a reciprocal respect which is innately understood by all who live here. The mountains, like the sea, make us humble, we remain in awe before a power that is both bitter and sweet and incredibly real.

The valleys echo with the baying of hunting dogs and the ringing of bells in the churches of small towns, whose stones are painted in myriad hues by the Autumn light.

For centuries, the staple food of the valley’s inhabitants in the Autumn was chestnuts, which ripen in the season that shepherds used to bring their flocks from their high summer pastures to the Maremma.

The Casentino valley has always been used as a route to and from the Adriatic Coast, a crossroads connecting the Tuscan and Romagna culture and gastronomy.

Hams and game meet vegetables and pecorino cheese.

Today, the two lands divided by the Apennines meet harmoniously at table. This is a place of good appetites and discerning palates.

A nord di Arezzo, al confine con la romagna la valle del Casentino è la prima culla dell’Arno.

Una terra mistica scelta da Francesco d’Assisi come luogo di meditazione e preghiera con una storia che affonda le radici nel paleolitico e nella cultura etrusca. Il lago degli Idoli alla fonte dell’Arno ha restituito nel tempo migliaia di statuette votive di epoca etrusca molte delle quali sono state recuperate dal mercato di frodo e riportate all’attenzione e alla fruizione del pubblico in molti musei.

Nel corso del Medioevo fu campo di battaglia dei fiorentini. Lo stesso Dante Alighieri fu chiamato alle armi in queste terre. È un territorio di montagna dominato dagli orizzonti d’altura, dalla luce radente dei tramonti sui boschi, dagli alberi secolari. Qui nidifica l’aquila reale, qui vivono gufi e falchi e cervi e caprioli e cinghiali e lupi. L’equilibrio, a volte fragile, fra uomo e natura si gioca sul filo del rispetto delle forze innate che comprende bene chi vive qui. La montagna, come il mare, è un luogo dove ciascun uomo di affida docile e remissivo allo strapotere di una natura né amara né dolce, ma vera.

Le valli risuonano all’eco dei latrati dei cani da caccia e dei campanili dei piccoli paesi, l’autunno le dipinge di tavolozze incredibili.

Qui il castagno è stato il pane per secoli ed i pastori affrontavano il viaggio epico della transumanza verso la Maremma. Il Casentino è da secoli la valle di passaggio da e verso la costa adriatica, crocevia di scambio tra cultura e gastronomia toscana e quella romagnola. Gli insaccati e la cacciagione contro gli ortaggi e il pecorino. Sulle tavole di oggi le due sponde dell’appenino romagnolo hanno trovato un accordo armonioso. Questo è un posto di buoni appetiti e ottime forchette.

Le Balze furono particolarmente ammirate da Leonardo da Vinci che ne fece lo sfondo del suo più famoso quadro: La Gioconda. L'insieme del paesaggio è molto suggestivo, anche i nomi dei poderi alludono a scenari incantati e a presenze magiche.

I fondovalle tanto quanto le colline sono ricoperte da vigneti e oliveti, mentre risalendo verso gli spartiacque si incontrano boschi, in particolare di querce, castagni e faggi. Lungo i corsi d'acqua si sono formati dei piccoli stagni o laghetti, importanti serbatoi di riproduzione di anfibi, insetti, crostacei, molluschi e piante acquatiche. Pur conservando una tradizione agricola rivolta alla produzione dei vini ed oli d’oliva di gran pregio, il Valdarno è da considerarsi una delle aree di maggiore e più antica industrializzazione sull’asse Firenze-Arezzo. Il processo di sviluppo industriale, concentrato in zone ben delimitate, ha lasciato intatto il fascino paesistico ed il patrimonio artistico del territorio valdarnese.

Il Valdarno di oggi è percorso da importanti vie di comunicazione, come la direttrice di alta velocità ferroviaria fra Firenze e Roma ed è meta di molti turisti dello shopping. La prossimità a Firenze e l’integrazione fra attività produttive e territorio ha permesso l’impianto e lo sviluppo di moltissime attività ricettive intorno ai grandi centri commerciali e outlet dei più grandi marchi della moda italiana.

Конья, столица суфизма и родина вращающегося танца, проводит фестиваль, посвященный Мевлане, создателю философии аскетизма дервишей. Сотни мужчин в длинных туниках и конусообразных шапках вместе закружатся под ритм задумчивых мелодий. Считается, что это аскетическая практика восходит к учению поэта Руми, мистика XIII века. Этот религиозный праздник намного древнее даже первых проблесков европейской цивилизации.

Декабрь – идеальный месяц для поездки в Гватемалу, если вы хотите увидеть воочию несколько самых интересных праздников этой страны. На дне Святого Фомы древние традиции индейцев майя перемешиваются с католическими обрядами для чествования святого покровителя это живописного гватемальского городка. Кульминация праздника приходится на 21 декабря, когда проводится ритуал Воладор: несколько акробатов летают в воздухе на тросах тридцать метров в длину и стремительно кружатся вокруг шеста.

Считается, что рождественский десерт pandoro (букв. золотой хлеб) впервые приготовили в городе Верона. Тогда, после несколько дней раздумий, он решил пойти в грот и подарить младенцу единственную вещь, которая у него была: свое умение жонглировать. Оказавшись перед младенцем, он достал из сумки цветные шары и начал увлеченно подкидывать их в воздух. Ребенок рассмеялся, и довольный актер отправился странствовать дальше. Дороги нашей жизни С самых первых шагов в детстве и на протяжении всей жизни способность человека к хождению стала синонимом независимости, возможностей, храбрости. Ходить означает давать себе время и пространство для того, чтобы изучить окружающую нас действительность, понять ее и насладиться ею. Пойдем по порядку. Когда человек учится ходить, он впервые становится независимым. Мы с детства учимся падать и вставать, что также означает учиться рассчитывать на самих себя, понимать пределы своих возможностей. Довериться руке помощи взрослого означает уметь учиться и полагаться на опыт. Вырастая, мы часто недооцениваем эти знания, заложенные в нас еще в первые месяцы жизни. На самом деле, мы никогда не забываем об их истинном, глубинном значении, к которому мы никогда не устаем прибегать. В действительности, ходьба помогает нам найти самих себя. Во взрослом возрасте мы ходим, когда необходимо поразмыслить о чем-то, или наоборот, что-то забыть. Это не случайно. Шум шагов и ритм дыхания похожи на инструменты оркестра. Шаг за шагом нашему телу удается найти опору в пространстве, а нашему «я» опору внутри тела. Мы можем услышать самих себя и все то человеческое и самобытное, что нас окружает. Здесь бесчисленные лавки мастеров по изготовлению вертепов открыты весь год, и это обязательный пункт программы как туристов, которые приезжают в Неаполь под Рождество, так и для самих неаполитанцев перед тем, как изготовить свой собственный вертеп. Неаполитанский вертеп вместе с лото и меню для ужина в Сочельник является одним из самых знаменательных символов рождественских традиций в Неаполе. Я верная последовательница аутентичности во всех ее проявлениях, традиционных и нонконформистских. Я ловец снов, освобождение которых моя цель. Я не разделяю свою жизнь на личную и профессиональную, я проживаю ее спонтанно и искренне как цельное произведение, в котором этика и эстетика создают новое измерение глубокой близости. Чем вы занимались или занимаетесь? Много лет назад я считала, что занимаюсь модой и искусством, сейчас я понимаю, что уже тогда я простонапросто старалась быть собой. Если говорить точнее, я занимаюсь одеждой и аксессуарами, абстрактным искусством, фотографией, пишу стихи, однако я не могу назвать себя стилистом, художником, фотографом или кем-то еще, я чувствую себя выразительницей более древнего языка, языка сердца, чувств, эмоций. Я перевожу образы в предметы, картины и поэзию, простые формы и выражения, чтобы наполнить ими душу и освободить ее, вернуть ее в свое естественное состояние: безвременье. В двух словах: я творю! Я думаю, что нет, но ведь «никогда не говори “никогда”»! В какие места вы бы никогда не вернулись? Почему? Мир сегодня небольшой, можно рассмотреть мельчайшую деталь даже в самых отдаленных уголках земли хотя бы в гугл-картах. И в то же время он по-прежнему велик и манит нас всем тем, что он может предложить, в то время как жизнь относительно коротка для любознательной личности. Поэтому, прежде чем вернуться в какое-то место, я бы открыла для себя что-нибудь новое. Несмотря на это, я бы вернулась в какое угодно место. Мне нравится заново узнавать и открывать что-то. От каблуков до каблучков: «Le Medicee», женская команда по регби из Флоренции Мы встретились с Энрико Таддеи и Себастьяном Родвеллом во Флоренции, в коридоре, который ведет на поле, на котором тренируются и играют «Le Medicee». Энрико - флорентиец, полузащитник, а также первый тренер команды; Себастьян - англичанин по происхождению, но уже давно живет в Тоскане, в прошлом играл за юношескую итальянскую сборную, а также за сборную Англии за «England Students» и «England Counties»; кроме того, он исполняет обязанности менеджера по маркетингу. Их обоих объединяет страсть к регби, к этой гамме эмоций, состоящей из пота, схваток и забитых голов. Этот спорт, особенно в своем женском варианте, еще не до конца понят и не получил еще широкого распространения. Энрико и Себастьян рассказали нам, как на поле группа девушек испытывает эти простые, невероятные эмоции, которые, может быть, сегодня уже сложно найти в других видах спорта. Это огромное желание бегать, соревноваться, соперничать, падать, с нетерпением ждать каждый чемпионат, не сдаваясь и не чувствуя страха.

В женском регби еще идет борьба с предрассудками? «К сожалению, да. За этим видом спорта стоят традиции контактного спорта, который считается исключительно мужским, при этом многие забывают о битвах, в которых с ожесточением сражаются девушки в обычной жизни, невзирая на трудности. Регби дает им возможность направить эту энергию в жесткий спорт, в котором нельзя отступать, так как ты являешься частью целой команды».

Энрико, кто такие «Le Medicee»?

«Le Medicee» берут свое начало из «Регби-7» (англ.

«Rugby Seven»). Эта команда дебютировала в женском регби в 2002, когда они еще назывались «Фиренце Регби 1931». Сейчас команда состоит как из молодых спортсменок, так и из профессионалок, которые едут на Кубок Италии по регби среди женщин, тосканский тур. Версия регби, по правилам которой играет флорентийская команда, стала, наконец, олимпийским видом спорта.

Из кого состоит ваш коллектив? «Наш коллектив состоит, не считая меня, главного тренера, из ассистента Луки Мартин, спортивного директора Элизабетты Салукко и нашего тренера по общеспортивной подготовки Флавии Альбани». Себастьян, как бы вы описали регби в Италии сегодня? «Регби в Италии развивается, но нужно еще многое сделать, чтобы этот спорт стал неотъемлемой частью итальянской культуры. Конечно, первый шаг – это дать шанс заниматься этим спортом всем, кто у кого есть желание, и в Тоскане наконец появляются для этого возможности. Однако получать удовольствие игры – это обязательное условие».

Что такое «Регби-7»? «Регби-7» - это стремительное и захватывающее действо. Игроков на поле семеро, остальные пять находятся на скамейке запасных. Мяч разыгрывается с дроп-гола, а не с помощью удара подъемом, а команда, выполнившая реализацию, продолжает игру (в отличие от версии «Регби-15», согласно которой игру начинает команда, которая пропустила мяч). Команды состоят из трех нападающих, одного защитника и трех трехчетвертных».

Каковы ваши цели? «С технической точки зрения наша цель на этот год это заложить прочный фундамент для развития, отталкиваясь от наших базовых способностей. Часто регби воспринимают только как спорт-борьбу, забывая, насколько тут важна скорость и возможность защищаться не только физически, но и с помощью ловкости и сноровки. Здесь, во Флоренции, мы предоставляем всем возможность вступить в игру. Регби – это игра для всех».

Космическое сердце Чтобы прокладывать новые дороги, нужно ясно представлять себе будущее, даже в фантастической манере, как это делали Жюль Верн и Леонардо да Винчи, ставшие потом стали символами буйства воображения, которое так много дал человечеству. Эудженио Нери много лет является практически единственным врачом, который занимается хирургией аорты. По сути, этой специальности не существует, она близка как к кардиохирургии, так и сосудистой хирургии. Она появилась в Техасе, в Хьюстоне, где лучшие хирурги разрабатывали методы, технологию и оборудование для операций на сердце и на аорте как раз в то время, когда, начиная с Хьюстона, этот вид хирургии стал распространяться по миру. Сердце – это верхняя ступень хирургии: только несколько сантиметров кожи отделяет его от грудной клетки. Это самые сложные сантиметры в истории хирургии. Чтобы хирургическое «вмешательство» прошло успешно нужно время, гений, воображение, современный, особый взгляд на вещи. Не каждый может представить, что можно остановить сердце и заменить его машиной, остановить кровоток посредством понижения температуры тела и заменить сосуд, используя протез из того же материала, что и костюм космонавта. Если не принимать во внимание техническую, научную, организационную стороны (работа происходит в команде), которые стали обыденностью, хирургия аорты сохраняет свое первоначальное очарование, хотя и использует в основном технические средства. Рядом с самыми современными машинами, оборудованиемидиагностическойвизуализацией, человек все еще имеет центральное значение. Современность сосуществует с такими прозаичными вещами, как усталость, стресс, кровь, иногда злость или слезы. Оперировать пациента, проводить трудоемкую установку протеза значит иметь дело с напряжением и осторожными движениями, что неизбежно для хирургов с тех самых пор, как существует эта профессия. Несмотря на огромное количество используемых средств и на важность затрагиваемых органов, кардиохирургическое вмешательство – это не авантюра: здесь скорее требуются стратегия, оценка факторов риска, и путей отступления,

оставленных на всякий случай, не так уж и много. Наверняка известно одно: не бывает простых хирургических операций, как пытаются внушить нам массовые издания. В лучших командах все операции проводятся первоклассными хирургами в паре, между которыми царит полное доверие, которые разделяют совместный план действий и будут внимательно следить за действиями друг друга. Центр хирургии крупных сосудов Сиены стал известным благодаря протезу, который был разработан около пятнадцати лет назад. Этот протез используется для операций на аортальной дуге и его конструкция значительно облегчает этот вид процедуры, потому что подходит для гибридных операций и для операций, где применяются как традиционные, так и инвазивные методики, например эндоваскулярные. Идея, результат труда профессора Нери, позже была продумана и разработана благодаря изучению болезни «трансплантат-против-хозяина» (реакция тканевой несовместимости). На сегодняшний день проводятся исследования в области все менее инвазивной и все более физиологической хирургии. Остается только предполагать, что ждет нас в будущем. Возможно, мы сможем проводить операции внутри сосудов с помощью зондов и визуализация с помощью анализа крови. Мы сможем практиковаться перед операцией на точных моделях операционного поля, с помощью которых можно будет рассказать пациенту и его родственникам про болезнь и ее лечение.
