ay You Live in Interesting Times, this is the theme of the 58th Venice Biennale, which we report on this edition. We hope that you have an interesting spring, the “bella stagione” that is always full of new sounds, images and hues, like the fluorescent works of Andy Bluvertigo. We dive into Andy’s universe which is influenced by pop art and combines extreme darkness with multicoloured explosions. As usual we cover many fields: design fashion, food, art, health and, of course, there is our selection of high-end properties including country homes, unique villas and luxury houses from the past and present. We are devoted to promoting quality, significance and beauty. Welcome to our world, we hope you look and read with pleasure.

ay You Live in Interesting Times. “Che tu possa vivere in tempi interessanti”, così recita lo slogan della Biennale di Venezia numero 58, una delle storie di questo nuovo numero. Vi invitiamo così a vivere una stagione interessante, quella “bella stagione” che da sempre invoca suoni, immagini, colori variopinti. Come quelli fluorescenti di Andy Bluvertigo. Ci catapultiamo con lui in un universo di riferimenti pop tradotti in uno stile che sa riunire estremi dark e variopinti. Un numero che vi presentiamo come al solito attraversando molti campi: dal design alla moda, dal food all’arte, fino alla salute. Ovviamente non manca la nostra selezione di immobili: case coloniche, ville d’autore, preziose dimore dal ricco passato. Perché il nostro mood è questo: qualità, valore e bellezza al di fuori del tempo e delle mode. Benvenuti tra noi dunque, in questo nostro mondo tutto da guardare, leggere e (speriamo) apprezzare.

Si tratta di competizioni che affondano le loro radici nel sistema dei clan scozzesi di diversi secoli fa. In origine, il capoclan incoraggiava i propri uomini a partecipare a prove di forza per dimostrare il loro valore in battaglia. Oggi non si combatte più, ma lo spirito di questo evento è rimasto inalterato. I tradizionali giochi scozzesi, che si svolgono tra maggio e settembre, consistono infatti in gare di forza, come il tiro alla fune, il lancio del martello, del peso e gare di atletica leggera. Non mancano danze, suonatori di cornamusa, pinte di birra e grandi abbuffate di carne.

he Highland Games has roots in the clan system of Scotland and has origins which go back centuries.

In the past it was the strongest men of each clan who participated to show their might and potential ferocity in battle.

Thankfully clan warfare is a thing of the past, but the games remain. They are held between May and September and involve a number of trials of strength, such as tug of war, hammer throwing and cable tossing. Of course, there is also much beer drinking, haggis eating and bagpipe playing.

In molte città italiane il mese di maggio e l’inizio di giugno sono il periodo dell’infiorata, un vero e proprio festival nazionale di arte floreale. È un momento magico per alcune città, che in occasione della festa del Corpus Domini, quest’anno il 23 Giugno, vedranno le strade ricoperte da una miriade di petali di fiori. Nelle città in cui la tradizione è più radicata, come per esempio in provincia di La Spezia, a Fucecchio, o a Caltagirone, gli artisti riescono a creare grandi e magnifici dipinti floreali, pieni di petali e semi multicolore, che raccontano storie, tradizioni e leggende legate al territorio.

he Montreux Jazz Festival is one of the most famous musical festivals in Switzerland and one of the most prestigious in Europe. It is held in Montreux, on Lake Geneva. The first festival, in which a group of great jazz artists participated, took place in 1967, in the Casino of Montreux. Today musicians perform all types of music, although jazz is still an important part of the programme.

The festival lasts two weeks and attracts over 200,000 visitors. An enormous success.

THE MONTREUX FESTIVAL JAZZ in Switzerland

n many Italian cities the months of May and June are the time of the infiorata, or flowering, a festival dedicated to flowers and floral art. It is a magic moment in some cities, where for the day of the Corpus Domini, this year the 23rd of June, the streets are covered with designs made with flower petals. Some cities have a strong tradition of floral art, such as Fucecchio and Caltagirone in La Spezia. The artists of these towns create magnificently large floral paintings, full of petals and multicoloured seeds, that tell stories, legends and traditions connected to the territory.

FESTIVAL DEL JAZZ DI MONTREUX Svizzera Il Montreux Jazz Festival è il più noto dei festival musicali tenuti in Svizzera e uno dei più prestigiosi in Europa. Si svolge a Montreux, sulle rive del Lago Lemano. La prima edizione ebbe luogo nel 1967, al Casinò di Montreux, e vide la partecipazione di un gruppo di grandi jazzisti. Oggi ospita esibizioni di musicisti di qualsiasi genere, anche se la musica jazz mantiene una parte importante nel suo programma. Nelle ultime edizioni il festival ha avuto una durata di ben due settimane e ha visto la partecipazione di circa 200.000 spettatori. Un successone.

he Nebraska chicken and hen festival is held every year in the town of Wayne. The most hotly contested competition is the egg throwing contest which is won by the competitor most skilled at not breaking the eggs. There are parades of chickenmen and the whole town gets involved in chicken themed events such as the biggest chicken dance in the world, an auction of concrete chickens decorated by local artists and, unfortunately for the chickens, a chicken eating contest!

Le ultime due edizioni sono state emozionanti e da ricordare, ed anche quest’anno il festival propone una line up ricca di artisti da non perdere con i nomi più cool della scena nazionale ed internazionale. Scenderanno in piazza vere e proprie leggende, fra cui Sting, Ennio Morricone, Elton John, Francesco De Gregori e Orchestra e molti altri ancora.

Lo scenario è quello di Piazza Napoleone, all’interno del Centro Storico di Lucca, e quello del Campo Balilla con la suggestiva cornice delle Mura Urbane.

he last two Lucca Summer festivals were full of emotion and memories, and also this year there is an exciting line up of Italian and international and artists not to be missed. Among the big names are Sting, Ennio Morricone, Elton John, Francesco De Gregori and Orchestra and many others. The venues are Piazza Napoleone, in the city’s historical centre, and Campo Balilla with the city’s suggestive walls as a backdrop.

Il festival dei polli e delle galline si tiene ogni anno a luglio nella cittadina di Wayne, nel Nebraska. La gara più entusiasmante è quella che prevede il lancio delle uova, naturalmente vince chi riesce nell’impresa eroica di non romperle. Travestimenti e sfilate di uomini-pollo sono all’ordine del giorno e la cittadina festeggia i polli con un’ampia gamma di eventi: la danza delle galline più grande del mondo, un’asta di galline di cemento decorate da artisti locali e, per il dispiacere dei volatili patroni della manifestazione, una sfida in cui vince chi mangia più ali di pollo!

ladmat is a gastro festival held in Stavanger, in Norway at the end of July. During the festival it is possible to taste typical Norwegian products and recipes, as well as dishes from more far flung places and cultures. The four days of gastronomic fun attract large crowds; past festivals have brought over 250 thousand visitors to the picturesque port of Stavanger, which is home to the Festival. As well as tasting ready-made dishes you can buy local products such as cured sausages, cheeses, breads, jams and much more.

Quattro giorni di divertimento gastronomico che nelle precedenti edizioni hanno attirato circa 250 mila visitatori al pittoresco porto di Stavanger, che ospita il Festival. I partecipanti, oltre a gustare piatti pronti, possono anche acquistare prodotti di produzione locale, tra cui salsicce essiccate, formaggio, pane, marmellata e molto altro ancora.

M

eeting Andrea Fumagalli, for many Andy Fluon, and for many simply Andy from Bluvertigo, is like diving into a parallel creative universe, in which sounds combine with images and colours. Keyboard player, saxophonist, founder of Bluvertigo with Morgan, the voice of Fluon, but also appreciated as a painter whose works radiate fluorescence. The universe that Andy the painter inhabits is a world filled with allusions to pop imbued with his personality in a style that unites extreme darks with multitudes of colours in a joyous “Cartoonia”.

The fluorescent tones contained by black borders are part of his personalised pictorial code, which synthesises, in a way which is never predictable, forms and planes that are narrative and perspectival. The subjects of his works are icons of art, music, cinema but also cartoons and ads that are decontextualized and relocated in our time, through fragments of personal memories. Andy lives and works in Monza.

What were your first aesthetic inspirations and in what ways do your art and music influence each other?

“Since I was very young, from an academic point of view, I have been close to graphic art, even before music. In fact, I specialised in illustration and graphic advertising at the Accademia delle Arti Applicate in Milan. I met Morgan and we began playing (it was 1986, editor’s note). In 1991 we founded Bluvertigo and with sax, keyboards, voice and synthesisers I contributed to the composition of three albums, live recordings and a series of successes. Music and painting have always gone together in my life, drawing inspiration from one another. I follow these parallel routes, because these are the things I do best. So, in reality the disciplines developed in similar ways. My pictorial code was born in the early 1990s and centred round a balanced alternation between FLUorescence and inFLUence”.

Do your paintings represent a sort of “escape from reality?

“Quite the opposite, my paintings are an amplification of reality. I enter Cartoonia, and whoever commissions a portrait or a painting, comes in with me, they enter my parallel reality. So, as in music, photographs of sound are sampled, in painting what moves me is transposed into this fluorescent parallel reality”.

Where does your inspiration come from?

“We are in a world that often overwhelms us, we are living through an epoch of confusion and in the confusion I like to be a drone who can hover over different contexts, taking in different ideas, floating from one thing to another. My “Maestro” is Warhol, but I find inspiration also in the liberty style of Alfonse Mucha and the Orient, which I know really well, above all China. I also love revisiting the past with memoires of manga and a celebration of the 1980s. And talking of the ‘80s, I have to mention David Bowie, a great source of inspiration for my two worlds: the musical events of Andy and The White Dukes are an example. A David Bowie Show, which Morgan also took part in on one date, my own reinterpretation of his repertoire and biggest hits. It isn’t strictly a tribute to Bowie, because my show doesn’t emulate him, it’s a vision of my own. Even the costume changes during the live performance are from my wardrobe, not the White Duke’s. For me, it’s an opportunity to sing his repertoire with my voice”.

Have Bowie’s aesthetics also influenced your art?

«A lot. Aesthetically he has been one of my biggest influences. Bowie and the work he did with Lindsay Kemp».

ncontrare Andrea Fumagalli, per tanti Andy Fluon, per molti semplicemente Andy dei Bluvertigo, corrisponde alla possibilità di tuffarsi in un mondo creativo a tutto tondo, in cui si uniscono suoni, immagini, colori. Tastierista, saxofonista, fondatore con Morgan dei Bluvertigo, voce dei Fluon, ma anche apprezzato e quotato pittore che illumina con la sua fluorescenza. Quello di Andy pittore è un mondo di riferimenti pop, declinati con la sua personalità in uno stile che sa come riunire estremi dark e variopinti nella sua “Cartoonia”. Le tonalità fluorescenti inserite in bordature nere fanno parte del suo personalissimo codice pittorico, che sintetizza in modo mai banale, forme e piani sia narrativi che prospettici. I soggetti delle sue opere sono icone dell’arte, della musica, del cinema, ma anche dei cartoni animati e della pubblicità, decontestualizzate e ricollocate nel nostro tempo attraverso frammenti di memorie personali. Andy vive e lavora a Monza.

Quali sono state le tue prime ispirazioni estetiche e in che modo la tua arte e la tua musica si influenzano?

“Da giovanissimo, a livello accademico ero più vicino alla grafica, prima ancora della musica. Mi specializzo infatti in illustrazione e grafica pubblicitaria presso l’Accademia delle Arti Applicate di Milano. Conoscendo Morgan ho iniziato a suonare (era il 1986, N.d.r). Nel 1991 abbiamo fondato i Bluvertigo e con sax, tastiere, voce e sintetizzatori ho contribuito alla composizione di tre album e alla pubblicazione di un live e di una raccolta di successi. La musica e la pittura hanno sempre viaggiato insieme nelle mia vita, ispirandosi vicendevolmente. Ho sempre cercato due canali paralleli sui quali percorrere la mia strada, perché sono quelli che mi risuonano meglio. Quindi in realtà le due discipline sono sviluppate in maniera molto simile. Il mio codice pittorico nasce nei primi anni ’90 ed è incentrato su una bilanciata alternanza di FLUorescenza e inFLUenza”.

I tuoi dipinti rappresentano una sorta di “fuga dalla realtà?

“Tutt’altro, i miei dipinti sono un’amplificazione della realtà stessa. Entro in Cartoonia, e così accade per chi mi commissiona un ritratto o un quadro, lo faccio entrare in questa mia realtà parallela. Per cui se in musica le fotografie dei suoni vengono campionate, in pittura, ciò che mi emoziona, viene trasposto, proprio per accedere a questa realtà parallela, fluorescente”.

Dove prendi la tua ispirazione?

“Siamo in un mondo che da un lato ci sommerge, siamo in un’epoca di confusione, e nella confusione preferisco fare il drone, che viaggia in diversi contesti e prende spunti diversi, fluttuando tra una cosa e l’altra. Il mio “Maestro” assoluto è Warhol, ma mi ispira anche il liberty di Alfonse Mucha, e poi l’oriente, che conosco molto bene, soprattutto la Cina. Amo inoltre rinfrescare il passato con il ricordo dei manga e con la celebrazione degli anni ’80. E se si parla di anni ’80 è necessario citare David Bowie, per me fonte di grande ispirazione per i miei due mondi: gli eventi musicali di Andy e The White Dukes ne sono un esempio. Un David Bowie Show, al quale in una data ha partecipato anche Morgan, una rivisitazione di parte del suo repertorio e delle sue hit principali. Non un tributo filologico, perché non ho costruito uno spettacolo per emulare Bowie. Una mia visione. Anche i cambi di abito durante il live fanno parte del mio guardaroba, non di quello del Duca Bianco. Per me è l’occasione di fare il cantante secondo il suo repertorio”.

L’estetica di Bowie ha influito anche sulla tua arte?

«Molto. Esteticamente è stato una delle mie ispirazioni principali. Lui e il suo lavoro fatto assieme a Lindsay Kemp».

deas that look to the future, the result of continuous research, this is the essence of the style of the designer Cristiano Burani. Cristiano graduated in medicine in Modena, before he understood that his destiny was not to become a doctor and enrolled to study fashion design at the famous Parsons School in New York, which boasts many international designers among its alumni. He started working as an assistant at Blumarine with Anna Molinari and then at Versace, where he worked closely with Donatella Versace.

He was a finalist in Who‘s Next Vogue Italia, a competition to promote new talent and the same year he won the Fashion Incubator of Camera Moda. It was in this period that he began to design and produce his own collection.

In 2010 he made his debut at Milan Fashion Week with a highly successful collection, which also won compliments from Franca Sozzani. Today, his clothes are worn by a myriad of international celebrities including Madonna, Halle Berry, Ariana Grande, Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morisette, Hanae Monae and Kate Hudson and also by high profile Italians such as Emma Marrone, Arisa, Laura Pausini, Nina Zilli, Chiara, Michelle Hunzicher, Alba Rohrwacher and others.

Cristiano, is there a designer who you find particularly inspiring?

“More than one particular contemporary designer (I especially admire Prada and Raf Simons), I am interested in the past where you can find real style innovators like Dior, Grès and Yves Saint Lauren, even if by now the most interesting and at times un-self-aware style innovators are the “cool” people I meet on the street”.

What’s your stylistic approach to fashion?

“My approach is always half way between analysis and study (a vestige of my study days) and something very instinctive that takes possession of me and leads me then and there to original solutions or combinations”.

Three adjectives to define your designs?

“Innovative, qualitatively excellent, wearable”.

In which city of fashion do you feel most at home?

“By now I am a citizen of the world, even though when I am home in Versilia, looking at the sea with the Apuan Alps and their quarries of marble behind me, I must say, I really feel at home.”

What does femininity mean today?

“Femininity is a concept that is often abused: today we ask women to be hyper feminine and the models of femininity presented in films, and above all on TV, are very deviant.

I believe that every woman has their own femininity that isn’t only aesthetic: for me, it’s a look, a way of moving your hands, of expressing yourself. In my work I am constantly in search of new and contemporary expressions of femininity, well aware that women today work, think and have other priorities than spending all day at the beauty salon”.

Is there a period or mode of fashion that you don’t like?

“The minimalism of the 1990s left me pretty indifferent”.

Let’s finish with the usual question, what are your plans for the future?

“I am already collaborating with Japanese lifestyle companies, where my creative contribution goes beyond the creation of clothes to include beauty products and interior design. We will be launching my first hosiery collection very soon with colours and textures chosen by me in collaboration with the Made in Italy industry leader, Omero Collant”.

na creazione proiettata verso il futuro, frutto di una ricerca continua. Questa è in sintesi la moda dello stilista Cristiano Burani. Laureato in medicina a Modena, Cristiano capisce di voler lavorare nella moda e studia fashion design alla Parsons School di New York, come i grandi stilisti internazionali. Inizia così a lavorare come assistente da Blumarine a fianco di Anna Molinari e da Versace, a stretto contatto con Donatella Versace.

Arriva in finale al concorso Who‘s Next di Vogue Italia per selezionare nuovi talenti nel fashion e nello stesso anno vince il Fashion Incubator di Camera Moda. Da lì inizia a progettare e produrre la sua collezione. Nel 2010 debutta alla Milano Fashion Week con una linea di abiti, il cui successo viene sancito anche dai complimenti di Franca Sozzani. Oggi i suoi capi sono stati già indossati da una miriade di celebrities: Madonna, Halle Berry, Ariana Grande, Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morisette, Hanae Monae, Kate Hudson, ma anche dalle italiane Emma Marrone, Arisa, Laura Pausini, Nina Zilli, Chiara, Michelle Hunzicher e Alba Rohrwacher, fra le tante.

Cristiano, c’è uno stilista dal quale hai preso ispirazione?

“Più che uno stilista contemporaneo in particolare (tra tutti Prada e Raf Simons), guardo con interesse al passato, dove ci sono stati i veri innovatori come Dior, Grès, Yves Saint Lauren, anche se ormai gli stilisti più interessanti e talvolta inconsapevoli sono le persone “cool” che incontro per strada”.

Quale è il tuo approccio stilistico alla moda?

“Il mio è un approccio sempre a metà fra l’analisi e lo studio (retaggio del mio percorso di studi) e qualcosa di molto istintivo che si impossessa di me e che mi fa immaginare di getto soluzioni o abbinamenti originali”.

Tre aggettivi per definire la tua moda?

“Innovativa, qualitativamente eccellente, portabile”.

In quale città del mondo ti senti davvero a casa?

“Ormai credo di essere un cittadino del mondo, anche se quando mi trovo nella mia abitazione in Versilia, guardando il mare e vedendo alle mie spalle le Apuane con le cave di marmo, posso dire di sentirmi davvero a casa”.

Cosa significa oggi femminilità?

“Femminilità è un concetto un po’ abusato: oggi si chiede a una donna di essere iper femminile e i modelli di femminilità che ci propone il cinema, ma soprattutto la tv sono molto devianti.

Credo che ogni donna abbia una propria femminilità che non è solo un qualcosa di estetico: per me è uno sguardo, un modo di muovere le mani, di esprimersi. Con la mia moda sono sempre alla ricerca di nuove e più contemporanee espressioni di femminilità, ben consapevole che le donne oggi lavorano, hanno pensieri e altre priorità che passare giornate intere dall’estetista”.

Quale fenomeno moda proprio non ti piace?

“Sicuramente il minimalismo degli anni ’90 mi ha lasciato un po’ indifferente”.

Concludiamo con la classica domanda: progetti per il futuro?

“Ci sono già in atto collaborazioni molto interessanti con aziende giapponesi di lifestyle, dove il contributo creativo non si ferma alla creazione degli abiti ma si estende al beauty e all’interior design. Lanceremo a giorni la mia prima collezione di hosiery con colori e textures scelte da me in collaborazione con l’azienda leader del settore Made in Italy, Omero Collant”.

The Student Hotel is just that. The hotel is part of the TSH group, founded by the young Scottish entrepreneur Charlie MacGregor who is revolutionising the concept of hospitality in Europe. “I founded The Student Hotel in 2006, after spending two years in Holland.

I have a lot of experience in managing student residences and accommodation in the UK and while I was in Holland, I saw that much of the accommodation offered to students there was pretty chaotic, run down and devoid of style. So, my idea was to offer accommodation based on the British model of colleges and student halls, but better. We wanted to give students an experience far superior to what they were used to and also get parents and families involved. We wanted to bring different communities together under the same roof. We didn’t know

Così ho iniziato a riproporre il modello britannico dei college, migliorandolo. Volevamo offrire agli studenti un servizio di gran lunga migliore rispetto a quello a cui sono abituati. E magari coinvolgere anche genitori e famiglie. Volevamo far vivere comunità diverse sotto lo stesso tetto.

from 800 euro a month to 1000 euro for a single deluxe room.

Almost everything is included: bills, gym and swimming pool, bike sharing, but not food.

And tourists? A double room in September costs 140 euro for 2 nights and the junior suite, 200 euro, although there are frequent offers on Booking throughout the year. For shortterm stays, you can rent a room for from 1150 euro a month, and if you’re looking for a desk, you can spend from 150 euro for flexible use to 230 euro for exclusive use.

Gli studenti partono da una base di 800 euro al mese, che diventano mille per le stanze singole Deluxe. Si tratta di tariffe quasi all inclusive: bollette, palestra e piscina, bike sharing, parte del cibo.

E i turisti? La matrimoniale per due notti a settembre costa 140 euro, 200 euro la junior suite, ma su Booking in determinati periodi dell’anno si trovano varie offerte vantaggiose. Infine i soggiorni brevi, che partono da 1150 euro al mese. E chi vuole solo una scrivania? Quelle flessibili costano 150 euro, 230 quelle dedicate.

he right wallpaper can transform an anonymous room into a warm and welcoming environment, and unlike more traditional furnishings and fittings, wallpaper doesn’t take up extra space. In the past walls were often covered from ceiling to floor with flowers, stripes and overbearing motifs, but these days designs are much less full on. Wallpaper can be used to highlight a particular architectural or decorative element, perhaps covering only one wall, or arranged in panels to create effects that are unusual and surprising.

New generation wallpapers are easy to put up and take down, making them an essential element of modern interior design, which can transform a bland urban apartment into the welcoming and intimate space of our dreams.

Bathrooms are perhaps surprisingly ideal places for wallpaper, in fact there are many water and extreme temperature proof brands and some wallpapers even absorb bad smells to keep your smallest room fresh and spring like. Tra le più pregiate c’è la carta da parati di lusso, arricchita da filamenti oro o metallizzati, e quella firmata da grandi artisti.

Per quanto riguarda il tipo di materiale, vince ancora la carta tradizionale, magari del tipo che funziona anche da isolante acustico. C’è poi chi ha scelto il vinile, la fibra di vetro o la grezza, oppure il tessuto. Quest’ultimo è stato per decenni trend assoluto nella decorazione delle pareti, e continua tutt’ora a trasmettere valori di qualità superiore e comfort abitativo. Le variazioni dipendono dal posizionamento delle fibre, sia naturali che sintetiche, e dalla moltitudine dei materiali, tra cui seta cangiante, velluto luminoso e avvolgente, lino, cotone, feltro, corda e molto altro ancora.

he idea of glamour- camping has been around for a few years now. Indeed, “glamping”, has become an ideal compromise for those who long for the great outdoors but are not quite ready to give up their creature comforts.

What could be more relaxing than staying in a campsite setting, surrounded by nature, but in accommodation worthy of a 5-star hotel?

Contact with nature is the dream of many city dwellers looking to escape for a few days from increasingly crowded, frenetic and polluted city centres. Green woodlands and fresh air have become a luxury commodity in high demand, especially during summer or winter holidays. For many, however, the thought of traipsing around looking for a suitable place to put up a tent, washing with cold water and fending off the mosquitoes is offputting. Traditional camping is not for everyone, but thankfully glamping means that even those who know nothing about tent pegs, ground sheets or guy ropes can enjoy the countryside in comfort and luxury.

So where is the best place to go glamping? The concept was born in South Africa, whose large open spaces are ideal for setting up tourist villages with minimalist architectures that respect the local environment, where guests can come into direct contact with nature and still enjoy top class facilities. The idea quickly caught on elsewhere, mainly in the United States and in Europe, in particular in Croatia, Spain, Portugal and Switzerland as well as in some regions in Italy. Accommodation varies from tents to mobile homes, to restored rural dwellings, to treehouses, to igloos and even to gypsy caravans. The design of “glampsites” is often sophisticated, and the quality of their facilities is always

a tempo sentiamo parlare di camping-glamour, il “glamping”, la nuova frontiera per chi non riesce a rinunciare alla bellezza del campeggiare in mezzo alla natura, e neanche ad ogni sorta di comfort, accampandosi in strutture attrezzate proprio come in un hotel a 5 stelle.

Il contatto con la natura è un’esigenza di chi fugge dai centri urbani, sempre più affollati e inquinati, e dalla vita frenetica di città. Il verde dei boschi e l’aria pulita delle campagne sono ormai diventati un lusso prezioso e ricercato da molti, soprattutto durante le vacanze estive o invernali. Per molte persone, però, accamparsi è sinonimo di scomodità, sofferenza, punture di insetti e acqua fredda. Il campeggio tradizionale non piace quindi a tutti, molto meglio se è accompagnato da proposte più comode, lussuose e confortevoli.

Ma dove fare glamping? Quest’esperienza ha avuto inizio in Sud Africa, dove i grandi spazi naturali hanno permesso di creare insediamenti turistici basati su un’architettura leggera e integrata, per permettere all’ospite un contatto diretto e profondo con la natura, senza dimenticare servizi prestigiosi. Da piccole postazioni, col tempo questo tipo di vacanza si è esteso un po’ ovunque, negli Stati Uniti e in Europa, in particolare in Croazia, Spagna, Portogallo, Svizzera e anche in alcune regioni d’Italia. Innovation and luxury for a dream camping holiday The new generation eco-luxury hotel in Québec is a perfect example of a glamping experience. The hotel has three geodetic houses built from wood and cement, all with a spa, and every other comfort guests could need, in a beautiful and incredibly relaxing setting. In the Finnish archipelago of Vallisaari, not far from Helsinki, you can stay in a “folding house” which uses renewable energy and provides a minimalist but comfortable and moveable place to sleep. You can wake up to a different view every morning! In Malaga there is a glamp site with tents that are so spacious that you can comfortably stand up in them. You feel as if you are in an oasis in Marocco, not only because of the decorations on the tents but also because of the site’s luxurious garden. In the centre of the garden, amongst the palms and fruit trees, there is a space with a spectacular swimming pool where breakfast is served each morning. In Mexico, there is a zero impact “glass house” designed by the architect Gerardo Broissin, while in Switzerland between Maienfeld and Jenins, there is a glamp site with sleeping spaces inside 8,000 litre wine barrels – an absolute paradise for wine-lovers. You can sleep in a double bed inside a barrel which also has a living room; the bathroom is next-door in a separate barrel. Electric heating means that you can be snug in your barrel even when temperatures plummet outside.

The glamping trend is adored by architects, stylists and artists who find in it an outlet for their creativity. It is also appreciated by the more discerning tourist who is intrepid and curious, who doesn’t do ‘package holidays’, preferring elegance and variety to crowds. The spirit of glamping is making an impact on fashion with the return of country and folk outfits, while in the artworld a centuries old love for nature has been revisited with a contemporary slant.

C’è poi la possibilità di addormentarsi in mezzo ai vigneti tra Maienfeld e Jenins, in Svizzera, e trascorrere la notte in botti da 8 mila litri: un paradiso per tutti gli appassionati del vino e un hotel a tutti gli effetti. Ogni barile, infatti, è dotato di un letto matrimoniale e di un salotto, mentre i servizi igienici si trovano in un barile separato adiacente. Grazie al riscaldamento elettrico, è possibile pernottare anche in pieno inverno.

Il glamping è quindi la tendenza che piace di più ad architetti, stilisti e artisti, al turista colto, intraprendente e curioso, che non si affida ai pacchetti turistici, non ama i luoghi affollati, ma ricerca fascino ed eleganza. Anche la moda cavalca il trend, rilanciando outfit country e folk, mentre il panorama dell’arte rispolvera un amore per la natura in versione contemporanea.

he United Arab Emirates, and especially Dubai, has become one of the most popular destinations for Italians looking for a change in direction. Expo 2020, the world’s most important trade fair, is only one of the events on the horizon for this up and coming city of the future.

Here, in this city surrounded by desert, amongst the skyscrapers and new building projects, in this parallel world, live and work many Italians.

According to the Italian Foreign Office, by 2018 there were 10.000 Italians living in the city, a number increasing with an annual growth rate of 21,3%.

It is above all young Italians who are choosing to move to Dubai, those keen to climb the managerial ladder, often with specialist qualifications and an entrepreneurial mentality. Many want a future free from excessive taxes and bureaucracy, an environment that is stimulating, cosmopolitan and which rewards intelligence and creativity.

Eleonora is 34 years old. She was born in Pistoia. “In Dubai, around 85% of residents are expats from over 200 different countries. I work in 34

User Experience Research, a discipline which studies the behaviours, needs and motivations of people in relation to the products and services they use, and diversity is important because people from different countries often have different mind frames, expectations and aspirations. My first job in Dubai was for a start-up operating in second hand women’s fashion. Now I work as Head of UX Research for an important ad platform. I manage a research team that works in emerging markets (India, Indonesia, South Africa and Latin America).

Dubai is incredibly tidy, clean and safe. You can leave your computer and telephone on the table in Starbucks while you go to the bathroom and find them exactly where you left them when you return. The same on the beach, it’s normal to go for a swim without worrying about your things, there is always someone from security watching. Public transport costs next to nothing (a tram ride costs 70 cents), and the salaries that managers and professionals earn mean that you can easily save or lead a very privileged lifestyle, it’s up to you. VAT is only 5% and so, if, like me, you are interested in technology you can buy phones and gadgets at really good prices (an iPhone XR costs about 150€ less than in Italy). The service sector is really efficient, you can order your shopping 24/7 with an app and it arrives within an hour, I contact my laundry via WhatsApp and they come to collect my washing and return it the next day, washed and ironed. There are also spas and beauty centres which offer good services at reasonable prices.

Clearly, all this convenience is based on social divisions that are more marked than those we experience in Italy, and the conditions and opportunities open to managers and professionals are not open to everyone. Dubai is a great place to live, but I respect the very valid counterview of those who are unwilling to accept such inequalities.”

Per lavoro mi occupo di User Experience Research, una disciplina che studia i comportamenti, i bisogni le motivazioni delle persone in relazione ai prodotti e servizi che usano, e la diversità è importante perché persone provenienti da paesi diversi hanno spesso modelli mentali, aspettative e desideri diversi. Il mio primo lavoro a Dubai è per una startup che si occupava di compravendita di moda di seconda mano femminile. Adesso lavoro come Head of UX Research per un’importante piattaforma di annunci, per cui gestisco il team di ricerca che opera nei loro mercati emergenti (India, Indonesia, Sud Africa e America Latina).

Dubai è incredibilmente ordinata, pulita e sicura. Mi è capitato di lasciare computer e telefono sul tavolino da Starbucks per andare in bagno e nemmeno per un attimo ho pensato di non ritrovarli al mio ritorno. Lo stesso vale per la vita da spiaggia, è normale tuffarsi senza preoccuparsi di lasciare i proprio averi sul bagnasciuga, la sicurezza è sempre presente a vigilare. I trasporti costano molto poco (una corsa in tram costa 0,70€ euro), e gli alti stipendi che manager e professionisti percepiscono senza tasse permettono di mettere da parte somme consistenti - o di avere un tenore di vita particolarmente agiato, a seconda delle preferenze. Sui beni c’è solo il 5% di IVA. Per chi, come me, è interessato alla tecnologia, questo significa, ad esempio, poter comprare gadget tecnologici a prezzi talvolta molto convenienti (un iPhone XR qui costa circa 150€ in meno rispetto all’Italia.) I servizi alla persona sono in generale molto evoluti rispetto all’Italia: si può ordinare la spesa a domicilio tramite un’app con consegna in 1 ora (24/7), contatto la mia lavanderia tramite WhatsApp e vengono a prelevare la biancheria a domicilio, per riconsegnarla il giorno dopo lavata e stirata, spa e centri estetici offrono servizi di alta qualità a prezzi contenuti.

Chiaramente, la convenienza di questi servizi si poggia sull’esistenza di una forbice sociale più ampia rispetto a quella che siamo abituati a vivere in Italia, e le condizioni ed opportunità a cui professionisti e manager hanno accesso non sono disponibili per tutti. Non tutti sono pronti a vivere in una società in cui le differenze sono così marcate, e credo che questa sia una scelta da rispettare.

It’s difficult to talk about yourself or to define yourself. By now I’m grown up and I’m sorry about that. I think I’ve been a good person, and this makes me happy, in a world in which I see people give greater value to possessions than to human relationships.

Difficile parlare di se stessi e darsi una definizione. Ormai sono grande e questo mi dispiace. Penso di essere una brava persona e questo è ciò che mi rende più felice, in un mondo in cui vedo gente che dà più valore a una Maserati che ai rapporti umani.

What do you do now?

If you stop me in the street and ask me: what do you do? I’ll answer that I’m a journalist. I say this with absolute conviction because its’ what I feel I am. I don’t only relate facts, I’m a professional, my job involves communication with people, visually, through social networks, videos or public relations. At the moment I’m director of a magazine called Must Review* which we founded in 2016 and I also run the communications company Must Communication.

Se mi trovi per strada e mi chiedi: che lavoro fai? Ti rispondo il giornalista. Lo dico con assoluta convinzione perché, in effetti, è ciò che sento di essere. Non sono solo uno che racconta un fatto, ma un professionista capace di sfruttare le sue competenze in tutto l’enorme spazio che la comunicazione ti offre: visual, social network, video, pubbliche relazioni. Oggi dirigo una rivista di lifestyle che si chiama Must Review* che abbiamo fondato nel 2016 e, parallelamente, sono il responsabile della società di comunicazione Must Communication.

How has the world of journalism changed since you started compared with today?

Com’è cambiato il mondo del giornalismo da quando hai iniziato ad oggi?

Totally. We grew up in the newsroom, when you looked for crime stories, went to press conferences, reported from the stadium. Today, thanks to smartphones, a journalist is always live. Young people coming into journalism now, in 2019, have to be able to do everything: write well and concisely, make a video, edit in real time. They need skills in graphics, photography, web marketing, in using social networks, in television. They also need the courage to jump in without fear of failure, because otherwise it’s all useless.

Totalmente. Noi crescevamo in redazione, a fare i “giri di nera”, alle conferenze stampa, alle partite la domenica. Oggi, grazie agli smartphone, un giornalista deve essere sempre in diretta. Il giovane che si approccia al giornalismo nel 2019 deve saper far tutto: scrivere in modo sintetico e gradevole, fare un video, montarlo in tempo reale. Deve avere competenze di grafica, fotografia, di web marketing, di utilizzo dei social network, di linguaggio televisivo.

Ma è necessario buttarsi senza paura di non farcela, perché altrimenti è tutto inutile.

In which cities have you lived?

I grew up in a small town called Ponte Buggianese, near Montecatini Terme. When I was 20, I went to Bologna to continue my studies, in the faculty of literature and philosophy, on the arts, music and performance course. I was commuting back and forth from Bologna to my town as I’d already started writing for La Nazione. Until I was 29 I stayed in Tuscany, but after they chose me to participate in the Italian Big Brother in 2007, I moved to Milan. I lived there for 6 years, travelling often to Rome and London for work when I was doing pieces on showbiz and gossip. I now live in Montecatini Terme with my girlfriend.

In quali città hai vissuto?

Sono cresciuto in un paese piccolo, si chiama Ponte Buggianese, a due passi da Montecatini Terme. A 20 anni mi sono trasferito a Bologna per proseguire lì gli studi, alla facoltà di lettere e filosofia, indirizzo Dams. Facevo perlopiù il pendolare da Bologna al mio paese, perché avevo già iniziato a scrivere su La Nazione. Fino a 29 anni sono rimasto in Toscana, ma quando mi hanno scelto per partecipare al Grande Fratello, nel 2007, mi sono trasferito a Milano. Ci sono rimasto 6 anni, facendo un po’ di sponda tra Milano, Roma e Londra dove andavo spesso per lavoro quando mi occupavo di gossip. Oggi abito a Montecatini Terme con la mia ragazza.

What are your plans for the future?

I don’t have one project, but a thousand! I have a novel that has been in a work in progress for years which I’d like to finish and a project for a TV channel broadcast exclusively via social networks. I’d be happy if I managed to do both these things. But what I care about most is the happiness of my girlfriend Sara and building a future with her. Perhaps that’s my real project for the future”.

The 58th edition of the International Arts Festival in Venice, presented at the Ca’ Giustinian by the festival’s President Paolo Baratta, has many innovations. The exhibition, taking place from 11th May to 24th November 2019, is curated by Ralph Rugoff and dedicated to the theme May You Live in Interesting Times. The phrase, quoted for the first time in the 1930s by the British parliamentarian Austen Chamberlain and subsequently used by others such as John Kennedy and Hilary Clinton, is often believed to be an ancient Chinese curse. In fact, it is no such thing. The phrase was coined in modern times, and stories of its origins are fake news ante litteram. “I turned the phrase around, from cursing to wishing, that’s how I envisage the title of my Biennial. A saying for uncertain times, that are also rich in meanings which are worth pursuing, a phrase for our own moment in history whose times are most definitely “interesting”, explains Rugoff, director of London’s Hayward Gallery since 2006 who was also artistic director of the 2015 XIII Biennial in Lyon, La vie moderne. This year in Venice there are 79 guest artists and 90 national participants. Many countries are taking part for the first time: Algeria, Ghana, Madagascar, Pakistan, the Dominican Republic and Kazakhstan. The Venice Biennial is based in the historic sites of the Giardini and the Arsenale. In addition, there are 21 connected nonprofit events promoted by national and international organisations and institutions which will take place in spaces throughout the city.

The Venice Biennial 2019 is a reflection on the precarious aspects of our existence, the threats to our traditions, institutions and to postwar relations and stability. The intention of the curator is not political, art can’t stop the rise of nationalist movements or of authoritarian governments, or alleviate the suffering of refugees, but it does have a role as a guide for living through these “interesting times”. A polyphonic chorus of artists, in which men and women are equally represented: a record never before achieved at the Venice biennial and perhaps only matched in festivals with a particular focus on gender-equality. The underlying theme of the festival is a desire to rethink wider political and social issues, through multiple male and female voices and narratives.

La mostra, in programma dall’11 maggio al 24 novembre 2019 è curata da Ralph Rugoff ed è dedicata al tema May You Live in Interesting Times. “Che tu possa vivere in tempi interessanti”, si pensava fosse un antico anatema cinese, citato per la prima volta negli Anni Trenta dal parlamentare inglese Austen Chamberlain e utilizzato tra gli altri anche da John Kennedy e dalla Clinton. Si è scoperto che era un’invenzione. Quasi una fake news ante litteram. “Così capovolgendola da anatema in augurio ho pensato potesse essere il titolo della mia Biennale. Un modo di dire dalla natura incerta ma anche ricco di significati che vale la pena perseguire, in un momento storico in cui i ‘tempi interessanti’ che invoca sembrano essere di nuovo con noi”, spiega Rugoff, direttore della Hayward Gallery di Londra dal 2006 e già direttore artistico della XIII Biennale di Lione, La vie moderne. Quest’anno sono 79 gli artisti invitati e 90 le partecipazioni nazionali. La Biennale di Venezia si svolge presso le sue sedi storiche dei Giardini e dell’Arsenale. Sono 21 gli eventi collaterali in programma, ammessi dal curatore e promossi da enti e istituzioni nazionali e internazionali senza scopo di lucro: questi hanno luogo in varie sedi disseminate in tutta la città. Alla Biennale d’arte di Venezia 2019 scopriamo opere d’arte che riflettono sugli aspetti precari della nostra esistenza, tra i quali le molte minacce alle tradizioni, alle istituzioni e alle relazioni dell’ordine postbellico. L’intento del curatore non è certo dimostrare la portata politica dell’arte, che non può fermare l’avanzata dei movimenti nazionalisti e dei governi autoritari, né alleviare il destino dei profughi, ma rendere manifesto il suo ruolo di guida nell’aiutarci a vivere e pensare in questi “tempi interessanti”.

Un coro polifonico e ben equilibrato, composto da una manifestazione in cui è in atto un equilibrio tra artiste donne e artisti uomini: un record mai raggiunto dalla biennale veneziana e, forse, neanche da nessun’altra grande manifestazione internazionale che non fosse dichiaratamente di stampo gender-equality. Tutto ciò sembra evocare la volontà di restituire un quadro generale della situazione globale politica e sociale, e suggerisce che per farlo l’unica narrazione possibile sia una pluralità di voci. In un’insolita parità di genere tra autori e autrici.

ataly opened on the 27th of December 2018 in the city of lights and entertainment. The huge food hall is right in the centre of the city, on the Strip, the beating heart of Las Vegas and obligatory first stop for tourists. You can choose from thousands of traditional Italian dishes, to eat immediately or to take away to enjoy in peace at home.

The city where everything and anything is possible, the casino capital, with glitzy theatres, shows and hotels suites costing thousands of dollars a night, now has a 4,000 square metre space dedicated to traditional Italian cooking. Eataly has many restaurants and bars for tasting different dishes, all carefully prepared under the leadership of Executive Chef Nicole Brisson. You can wander through the Cucina del Mercato which has everything: salamis, cheeses, a butcher’s, a pizzeria serving traditional pizzas prepared with slow leavened dough. The novelty of the marketplace is that you can choose what you would like to eat fresh from the stalls and then watch it being cooked while you wait. There is also a fishmonger’s with Mediterranean fish and seafood, a counter selling fried street food, a “rosticceria”, panini with freshly made mozzarella and fresh “homemade” pasta produced on site by skilled chefs. There are also three wine stores: at Aperitivo you can sip Negroni and Spritz, in the Enoteca you can sample prestigious labels by the glass and then there is the elegant Gran Caffè Milano, with a replica of the famous bull mosaic from the famous Vittorio Emanuele Gallery.

Il punto vendita è situato proprio al centro della Strip, il cuore pulsante della Las Vegas che produce, quella strada che nell’immaginario collettivo rappresenta la prima tappa obbligata. Si può scegliere tra migliaia di piatti della tradizione italiana, con la scelta di poterne usufruire sul posto, farseli preparare sul momento, oppure decidere di portarseli via e assaggiarli con calma nel proprio albergo o nella propria casa.

La città dove tutto è possibile, la mecca dei casinò, dei teatri con gli show più spettacolari, degli hotel da mille e una notte, ora ha anche il suo spazio di 4.000 metri quadri estesi su un piano, dedicati alla tradizione culinaria italiana, con ristoranti e bar di ogni tipo dove gustare i piatti tradizionali preparati sotto la guida della Executive Chef Nicole Brisson. Tra le altre cose mai viste negli Stati Uniti, a Eataly Las Vegas si trova il Kitchen of the Market, che racchiude di tutto: dalla salumeria alla macelleria con cucina, dove poter chiedere al macellaio la carne da farsi cucinare, fino alla pizzeria al tavolo che porta negli Usa le pizze romane servite su una lunga pala di legno, preparate con la tipica lievitazione lenta made in Italy. Se si parla di Italia non può mancare l’angolo dedicato al mare, la Pescheria con frutti di mare e pesci mediterranei. Ovviamente presente anche lo street food in un bancone con fritti, rosticceria, panini con mozzarelle appena fatte e naturalmente c’è tanto spazio per la pasta fresca, “fatta in casa” da abili artigiani. Presenti tre locali dedicati al mondo degli wine lovers: a L’Aperitivo si bevono il Negroni e lo Spritz, nell’Enoteca si scelgono etichette al bicchiere o in bottiglia, e poi c’è l’elegante Gran Caffè Milano, con una replica del pavimento della celebre Galleria Vittorio Emanuele con l’iconico mosaico del toro.

If you are looking for a more traditional dining experience, there are two restaurants with waiter service, Manzo and La Pizza e La Pasta, where you can choose from a menu. There are also bars serving real Italian espresso and pastries and chocolate counters for those with a sweet tooth. If you are a budding chef there is the Chef’s Table, which allows you to see in person how dishes are prepared and laboratories for learning about Italian foods from all over Italy: you can learn how to make gnocchi or about the differences between Tuscan and Sicilian olive oil for example.

The Eataly chain was founded by the entrepreneur, Oscar Farinetti, who has decided to keep the Las Vegas mega food hall open 24 hours a day, seven days a week because, as any seasoned poker player knows, day and night often roll into one in Vegas.

Presenti anche Manzo e La Pizza e La Pasta, ovvero due ristoranti con formula più tradizionale per chi preferisce menù completi e servizio al tavolo e corner dedicati a caffè, pasticceria, cioccolato per chi vuole fare una pausa golosa. Magari prima o dopo il mercato, perché il grande protagonista di Eataly non manca nemmeno a Las Vegas, con 5000 prodotti di ogni regione italiana. Presente uno Chef’s Table, per esplorare il cibo con show cooking di chef da tutto il mondo e laboratori per imparare tutto sulle nostre tradizioni: da come si modellano gli gnocchi, alla differenza tra l’olio extravergine di oliva toscano o siciliano.

Die traditionellen schottischen Spiele, die zwischen Mai und September stattfinden, bestehen aus Kraftwettkämpfen wie Tauziehen, Hammerwerfen, Krafttraining und Leichtathletikwettkämpfen. Der Weg zu den Olympischen Spielen in Tokyo 2020 führt durch Minsk. Die erste Ausgabe fand 1967 im Casino von Montreux statt und wurde von einer Gruppe großer Jazzmusiker besucht. Heute finden hier Auftritte von Musikern aller Genres statt, obwohl Jazz eine wichtige Rolle im Programm spielt. In den letzten Ausgaben dauerte das Festival zwei Wochen und rund 200.000 Zuschauer nahmen daran teil. Ein Blockbuster.

Heute muss ein Journalist dank Smartphones immer live sein. Der junge Mann, der sich 2019 mit dem Journalismus befasst, muss in der Lage sein, alles synthetisch und angenehm zu schreiben, ein Video zu erstellen und in Echtzeit zu bearbeiten.
