pring always brings the excitement of change, of self-renewal and regeneration. It carries an energy charged with electricity and curiosity that is at times almost naïve. Its power is latent, poised for action, like the force enclosed in the instant before a flower opens or a smile shines. The soft breeze of the new season surprises us with its strength and makes us wonder at its innocence. It is with the spirit of early spring that we herald a new year for our magazine, with a gaze directed towards the world and its multiform progress. We are in love with beauty, in all its forms, with culture in all its manifestations, with history with all its tales, with life, with existence, with fragility and with strength, with every coin and every coin’s flipside, with childhood because we are never too old to be children and experience new emotions and with home. a primavera porta sempre con sé l’avventura del cambiamento, del rinnovarsi e del rinnovare. Un’ energia carica di elettricità, curiosa, a tratti quasi naif ma sempre in movimento, e sempre come racchiusa nell’eterno istante prima dello schiudersi di un fiore o di un sorriso. he New Orleans Jazz Festival is an event attended by jazz fans from all over the world. The first festivals took place in the 1970s, when the New Orleans Hotel Motel Association and the “New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation” were founded.

New Orleans practically is Jazz. As well as attracting cutting edge performers from Louisiana, many international stars have played at the festival over the years. Inevitably ticket prices have increased considerably since those early days.

New Orleans e il Jazz sono ormai un binomio indissolubile. Oltre a coinvolgere performers poco noti della Louisiana, nel corso degli anni ha potuto contare su numerose star internazionali. Anche i prezzi, nel corso degli anni, sono di conseguenza notevolmente aumentati.

he Romerias de Mayo Festival, Festival of Young artists, is held in Cuba every year from the 3rd to the 8th May. The festival takes place in the city of Holguín and is the one of the most important cultural events in the country. It welcomes hundreds of young artists from all over Latin America. This year there will be several special events, many of which are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Martin Luther King Centre.

ut your most outrageous orange outfit in your suitcase and head for the Koningsdag in Amsterdam, a huge street party to celebrate the birthday of the Dutch king with a flamboyant splurge of national colour.

During the party, the town’s population nearly doubles. The entertainment begins in the evening of the 26th and lasts until the 28th with street sellers, market stalls and boat parties on the city’s famous canals. If you need an energy boost, you should try the typical sweet sold at the festival, Tompouce, which is decorated for the occasion with orange icing in honour of the King.

A Cuba, dal 3 all’8 maggio, si tiene il Romerias de Mayo, il Festival della Gioventù artistica, nella città di Holguín, il più grande evento artistico dell’isola al quale partecipano centinaia di giovani artisti provenienti da tutti i paesi dell’America Latina. Tanti eventi speciali, molti dei quali in onore del 25° anniversario del Centro Martin Luther King, che si svolgeranno nella città.

Mettete in valigia la vostra tenuta arancione più sgargiante per il Koningsdag di Amsterdam, ovvero un’enorme festa di strada per celebrare il compleanno del re olandese sfoggiando il vistoso colore nazionale. Durante la festa, la popolazione della città è quasi raddoppiata! Il divertimento ha inizio la sera prima, con festeggiamenti che si protraggono fino al giorno dopo tra venditori ambulanti, bancarelle e feste in barca sui canali famosi in tutto il mondo. Per evitare un calo di zuccheri, fate in modo di assaggiare un tipico dolce Tompouce, appositamente decorato con una glassa arancione in onore del Giorno del Re.

he First of May is one of the highlights of the year in Finland. Everything starts on the 30th of April, when parties are organized in towns all over the country in an atmosphere of carnival and mischief.

The celebrations are organized by students, dressed in white robes, who drink a homemade liquor called "Sima" and who decorate statues with white berets.

The First of May is traditionally celebrated with picnics in parks, often with unpronounceable names, like Ullanlinnamäki.

A Mosca l’arrivo della primavera viene festeggiato il 9 maggio con una grande festa al Park Pobedy, con parate militari ed eventi vari per celebrare quello che viene definito il Giorno della Vittoria, cioè la fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Oltre alla celebre parata militare in Piazza Rossa, che segue la coreografia della prima sfilata della Vittoria, gli altri ingredienti tradizionali dei festeggiamenti sono gli incontri tra i veterani nei parchi e nelle piazze, un palinsesto di film e concerti di classici sulla guerra in tv, e i fuochi d’artificio la sera.

n Moscow the arrival of spring is celebrated on the 9th of May with an enormous festival in Pobedy Park, which commemorates the nation’s victory at the end of the Second World War with military parades and other events. Besides the famous military parade in Red Square, which is faithful to the choreography of the first victory march, there are meetings with veterans in parks and squares, cinema events and concerts dedicated to the war on television and fireworks in the evening.

Il Primo Maggio dei finlandesi, è uno degli eventi più attesi dell'anno.

Tutto ha inizio il 30 aprile, quando in tutte le città del paese si organizzano festival dalle atmosfere carnevalesche.

Le manifestazioni sono guidate dagli studenti, che per l'occasione indossano un emblematico copricapo bianco, bevono un liquore fatto in casa chiamato "Sima" e addobbano tutte le statue del Paese con un berretto bianco.

Un evento di quattro giorni che consiste in una parata in costume tra le più bizzarre del Regno Unito, in cui foglie, fiori ed altri elementi vegetali sono i protagonisti indiscussi.

La manifestazione si svolge ogni anno a Maggio. Questa straordinaria sfilata si dirama per le vie di Hastings, dove migliaia di persone si riuniscono per godersi buona musica di ogni genere, balli popolari e, naturalmente, bevande alcoliche a non finire con l’obiettivo di dare il benvenuto all’estate.

A

four-day event which features a bizarre fancy dress parade starring leaves, flowers and other half-human / half-plant creations. The festivities take place every year in May, in the streets of Hastings, where thousands of people congregate to enjoy good music, folk dancing, and, naturally, beer, in order to welcome in the summer.

T

he Distortion festival lasts nearly a week and is a celebration of emergent dance music and organised chaos. It began in 1998 as an experiment and is now a yearly event, with free street parties during the day and events in venues across the city in the evening. The main attraction is a two-day festival in the ex-industrial zone of Refshaleøen. The performers at this year’s event have not been announced yet, but the 20th anniversary festival promises to be as innovative and unpredictable as ever.

Distortion Copenaghen - Danimarca Si potrebbe descrivere Distortion come uno spettacolo lungo quasi una settimana che rende omaggio alla musica dance emergente e al caos organizzato.

Iniziato come un esperimento nel 1998, è ora un evento annuale con feste di strada diurne gratuite, serate in locali esclusivi e un festival conclusivo di due giorni nell’ex-zona industriale di Refshaleøen. Anche se non sono ancora stati annunciati gli artisti che si esibiranno, il 20° anniversario del festival si preannuncia imperdibile per gli amanti della musica dance di tutto il mondo.

he visual poetry of Monica Bonzano, internationally famous artist and designer, does not need explanation, capable, as it is, of touching with a few strokes, the chords of our most intimate sense of humanity, fragile, yet strong, delicate, yet tough. Her works are a log of the journey we know as life. Her figures, female or without gender, are slim, minute, with movements that are numbed and faces that are full of curiosity and absence. The surfaces, worn with colour and with the deception of fast strokes are the result of a meticulous research into a sense of identity and belonging, the response of an individual in search of freedom, of unreal perfection and glamour. Linen canvases, cloth and fabrics, washes, erasures and layers characterise Monica Bonzano’s works, works that are able to hold the density of time and give back the immediacy of a moment.

A

n engine for sharing and spreading culture, Fondazione Romaeuropa - Arte e Cultura has been tapping into the energy of contemporary trends and transforming them into art and culture for over 30 years through REf, the Romaeuropa Festival.

The association was founded in 1990 and granted legal personality on the 30th April 1992 with a decree from the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment. The Festival enjoys the Official Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic and for its 22nd Edition was awarded the Medal of the President of the Italian Republic.

The foundation and the festival were included in Law 20 December 2012, n.238 which aims to support and promote outstanding Italian music and theatre festivals which have gained international prestige.

For more than 30 years the foundation has been part of wide reaching international and local networks which include Institutions, Embassies and centres for the production and promotion of contemporary art and culture.

The festival, born in 1986, presents the best of contemporary art and culture, staging works by well-known international artists together with the most interesting creations of the up and coming generation. Europe, Asia, America, Oceania and Africa meet every year in Italy’s capital, for a festival that incorporates dance, theatre, music, cinema, interviews with artists, the visual arts and new technological wonders.

The sounds and the art of five continents mix in an intense aesthetic experience that spreads the joy of performance throughout the city in various venues for over two months.

otore di produzione, condivisione e diffusione culturale, la Fondazione Romaeuropa - Arte e Cultura intercetta le energie del contemporaneo per trasformarle in arte e cultura da oltre 30 anni grazie al REf, Romaeuropa Festival.

Costituita nel 1990, il 30 aprile 1992 la Fondazione ha ricevuto il riconoscimento della Personalità Giuridica con decreto del Ministero del Turismo e dello Spettacolo e, per il Festival, ha ricevuto l’Alto Patronato della Presidenza della Repubblica italiana e per l’Edizione XXXII la Medaglia del Presidente della Repubblica Italiana. Fondazione e Festival sono stati inseriti nella Legge 20 dicembre 2012, n. 238 a sostegno e valorizzazione dei festival musicali ed operistici italiani di assoluto prestigio internazionale.

Da oltre 30 anni è parte integrante di un ampio network internazionale e locale, di cui fanno parte Istituzioni, Ambasciate e centri di produzione e diffusione della creazione artistica contemporanea.

I suoni e le espressioni artistiche di cinque continenti costruiscono un’esperienza estetica intensa che distribuisce il piacere dello spettacolo per oltre due mesi in un’articolata geografia di spazi.

I

speak about the world as if I really understood it and at times I surprise myself with my own thoughts; sometimes I don’t know I think in a particular way until the moment before I express myself. I am sure I am not alone in having felt this strange sensation. I would prefer to be able to narrate something in the certainty that there was only one way of telling it and not infinite and therefore paralyzing possibilities.

It is a courageous desire to want to reflect in the company of my readers on happiness. It is almost more difficult to avoid being judgmental about positive matters than about negative ones. It is raining as I write.

I ask myself what happiness is, and I reply, immediately and with a degree of self-induced indignation, that happiness is not a thing. If it is true that the quality of an answer is dependent on the quality of the question, I cannot stop here, I must continue to ask myself what the best way of investigating happiness is and avoid the danger that the nature of my question hinders me, even in a subconscious manner, in finding my way. A typical contortion of thought that is opulent and useless.

Philosophers, scientists, poets and musicians have all tried to classify happiness, to define it and segment it with varying aims; there are those who analyse its moral or philosophical nature, those who study its emotional or psychological aspects and those who investigate its chemical or physiological basis. Happiness is a fleeting subject. Perhaps we will never understand it if we attempt to define it univocally. Happiness is perhaps like beauty, boxes of thought that everyone fills in their own way, according to their own experience, as if the contents were super-human, an existential connection with the imponderable.

Western culture equates happiness with possession, or, rather, with consumption. The equation happiness = richness has long dominated cultural, economic and political thought, becoming the deus ex machina for many of our individual experiences. It is particularly difficult to say whether the first signs of a paradigm shift which today are a structureless cloud will lead to a systematic change in the next few years. Our world has never been so multiform and polyphonic, and history is only comprehended in retrospect. The personal choices of the younger generations (from food to music) and the professional realities in which they operate (the gig economy, telework and social media) reveal attitudes that are based on alternative values and priorities underpinned by a wholly unexpected conception of happiness. Fast food has given way to super food; the distorted guitars of rock are losing ground to electronic experimentation; the concept of hyper specialization is becoming less valued than the ability to excel in contexts that demand ‘multi talents’.

Those who support a happiness-based economy, would measure happiness in similar ways to those traditionally used to measure a nation’s wellbeing. Gross National Happiness (GNH), far from being a parody of GNP, is a system of reference for measuring the level of a state’s development in terms of its ability to facilitate individuals in their search for individual and collective happiness. Many forms of spiritualism that are based on meditation, relaxation techniques, westernized interpretations of martial arts or eastern philosophy are evidence of increasingly global cultural exchanges, but they are also signs of a progressive and unexpected reappraisal of materialism. Themes such as personal development, resilience, life strategy development (as if it were really possible to plan our lives) and personal branding are becoming increasingly popular, also because of the influence of social media.

But the most interesting gauge of change is the way that social networking has altered the concept of visibility, transforming the state of popularity for its own sake into a source of gratifi-

cation. The continuously updated snapshots of the perfect lives of networkers who are always happy, beautiful, easy, fun and extremely ‘social’ have transformed an aspiration into reality. After all, even the old psychotherapists encouraged us to visualize and verbalize our desires in order to concentrate our cravings, be they consciously or subconsciously expressed, on fulfilling our dreams. Could it be that by constantly visualizing and verbalizing their perfect lives, these young people actually succeed in channelling their energies better than others? Who knows?

The recipe for happiness is like the recipe for carbonara (or any other classic dish): everyone has their own. I don’t know if there are rules or routes that lead to certain happiness, I wouldn’t be able to suggest what they may be, but I can tell you this: I strive to do what I like doing as best as I can, I chase all of my ideas, I cultivate each and every aspiration and I share all my dreams in the hope that, even if I don’t, someone may fulfil them one day and because otherwise they would rot in silence in a drawer.

I often go to the coast to smell the pungent odour of the port and listen to the hypnotic sound of the waves. I throw thoughts like stones into the cosmos in the infantile and barbaric certainty, that sooner or later they will turn back into stardust.

arlo delle cose e del mondo come se le comprendessi davvero e mi stupisco dei miei stessi pensieri, a volte, quando non sapevo di pensarli fino all’attimo prima di esprimerli.

Sono certa di non essere la sola ad aver provato questa strana sensazione. Piuttosto mi piacerebbe raccontare e saperlo fare come se ci fosse un solo modo e non infinite, perciò paralizzanti, possibilità.

Aspirazione audace, la mia, di riflettere in compagnia di chi mi legge, sulla felicità. Non essere giudicanti su temi positivi è quasi più difficile che non esserlo su temi negativi.

Piove mentre scrivo.

Mi chiedo cosa sia la felicità e rispondo, subito e con una certa auto-indignazione, che la felicità non è una cosa. Allora, se è vero che la qualità delle risposte dipende dalla qualità delle domande, non posso smettere di interrogarmi su quale sia il modo migliore per indagare la felicità senza che sia la stessa formulazione di una domanda ad impedirmi di trovare una risposta che non intralci, fin dal mio subconscio, il mio percorso. Tipico avvitamento del pensiero, opulento ed inutile.

Tutti, filosofi, scienziati, poeti, musicisti, proprio tutti hanno

provato a classificarla, a distinguerla a segmentarla allo scopo di individuarne chi la dimensione morale o filosofica, chi la dimensione emotiva o psicologica, chi la struttura chimica e fisiologica.

La felicità è materia sfuggente. Forse non è cercandone una definizione univoca che riusciremo a comprenderla. La felicità pare essere come la bellezza, scatole del pensiero che ciascuno riempie a modo suo, con la sua esperienza, come fossero categorie superumane, un gancio esistenziale con l’imponderabile.

La cultura occidentale ha tradotto la felicità con il possesso o, ancor meglio, con il consumo. L’equazione felicità=ricchezza è già riconducibile al termine latino ed ha dominato la scena culturale, economica e politica fino ad arrivare ad essere un deus ex machina per le singole, individuali esperienze di vita di molti di noi. È particolarmente difficile dire che i molti segnali di cambiamento di paradigma siano oggi una nebulosa destrutturata che produrrà certamente un cambiamento sistemico nei prossimi anni. Il mondo non è mai stato così multiforme e polifonico come oggi e la storia non si fa affatto comprendere nel suo corso se non a posteriori. Di fatto le scelte personali (dall’alimentazione alla musica) e professionali (gig economy, telelavoro e social media) delle giovani generazioni rivelano un assetto quantomeno alternativo di valori e di priorità a cui è sottesa una concezione della felicità del tutto inaspettata. Il super food ha preso il posto del fast food; le chitarre distorte del rock perdono popolarità allo stesso ritmo con cui avanza la sperimentazione elettronica; l’idea di iper-specilizzazione professionale cede alla progressiva dominanza di ciò che gli esperi chiamano talento multiplo; i molti sostenitori dell’economia della felicità la misurano al pari di ogni altro indicatore delle condizioni di benessere di una nazione. Il FIL (Felicità Interna Lorda), lungi dall’essere l’ironica parodia del principale indicatore della salute economica di uno stato, è un sistema di riferimento per lo sviluppo di una economia che faciliti la ricerca della felicità individuale e collettiva. Molte forme di spiritualismo sotteso a pratiche meditative, tecniche di rilassamento, applicazioni occidentalizzate

delle arti marziali o della filosofia del Sol Levante, sono certamente frutto della globalità degli scambi ma sono altresì sintomo di una progressiva, quanto mai inattesa, messa in discussione del materialismo tout court. Temi come lo sviluppo personale (fisico e morale), la resilienza, le strategie di vita (come se fosse davvero possibile una pianificazione strategica) fino al personal branding sono di grande popolarità forse anche grazie all’influenza dei social media.

Ma l’indicatore più curioso è il modo in cui i social media hanno modificato la concezione di visibilità, mutando in gratificazione (esogena) il concetto stesso di popolarità. Le vite perfette, sempre felici, sempre belle, sempre facili, divertenti ed estremamente “sociali” rappresentate dagli utenti dei social in milioni di post generano un effetto inaspettato, quello di trasformare un’aspirazione in realtà. Infondo, anche la vecchia psicoterapia ci ha sempre suggerito di visualizzare e verbalizzare i nostri desideri per orientare tutti i nostri sforzi consapevoli o meno nella direzione della realizzazione. Non sarà che a furia di visualizzare e verbalizzare una vita perfetta tanti di questi ragazzi non riescano davvero a canalizzare la propria energia meglio di altri? Chissà.

La ricetta della felicità è come quella della carbonara (o di ogni altro classico della cucina): ognuno ha la sua. Non conosco regole e percorsi certi per arrivare alla felicità, non saprei suggerirne alcuno ma posso raccontare la mia ricerca, questo si. Io mi limito a fare al mio meglio ciò che mi piace, inseguo ciascuna delle mie idee, coltivo ogni singola aspirazione e condivido tutti i miei sogni che sarebbero destinati solo a marcire in silenzio chiusi nel cassetto, nella speranza che, invece, qualcun altro abbia tempo, voglia e possibilità di realizzarli.

Frequento spesso la costa, l’odore pungente del porto e il suono ipnotico delle onde. Lancio pensieri come sassolini nel cosmo con la certezza, infantile e barbarica, che prima o poi torneranno in polvere di stelle.

pring is slowing unfurling. If you love trekking, long and satisfying walks or bicycle rides through newly greened landscapes, a trip to the mountains is a must. This is the best time of year for visiting the mountains, for walking through the awakening woods of oak, helm oak, chestnut and pine, for inhaling the earthy wet smells awakened by the strengthening sun. here is a degree of debate about when language first evolved, but it is probable that by 100.000 years ago, our ancestors were communicating with sophisticated spoken language. Throughout mankind’s history many languages have come and gone, and it is often difficult to trace their origins, especially as the advent of writing (the only evidence we have about languages in the past) is a relatively recent development in human societies. Linguists conventionally determine the birth of a language to be the moment it first appears in texts, although it is likely that many languages existed long before they were written down.

Today, there are calculated to be around 7.000 languages in the world, but 90% of these will probably be lost in the next 100 years.

Some of those most at risk are also some of the most ancient, including those belonging to the large Afro-Asiatic group, such as Aramaic which is part of the Semitic branch of languages, like Hebrew, and which is still spoken in remote villages in Syria. A variant of Ancient Egyptian is still used as a liturgical language in the Coptic Church.

The most ancient language still in use today is probably Tamil whose origins date to around 2500 B.C and which is still spoken by around 78 million people. Tamil speakers are concentrated mainly in the state of Tamil Nadu and the surrounding areas, and the language is also spoken by 4 million people in Sri Lanka. Smaller linguistic communities are also found in Malesia, Mauritius and Singapore.

Sanskrit, the ancient language of India, is considered the ‘language of the gods’ with origins in the second millennium B.C. Being the literary language of the elite, Sanskrit was a ‘perfect language’ with rules that forbid mutation and avoided the corruption that spoken languages were subjected to. Indeed, Sanskrit means ”refined” or “well-contained”. This rich literary language has given the world several great works such as the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, as well as words adopted by many modern languages such as yoga, jungle and avatar.

Ancient Greek is first documented around 1500 B.C. It was the

language of the philosophers and writers who underpin Western civilization, such as Plato, Homer and Socrates. Modern Greek, an official language of the European Union, is spoken by around 13 million people today in Greece and Cyprus. There is an isolated area near Trabzon in Turkey where Pontic Greek is spoken by around 5000 people, which is believed to be the closest living language to Ancient Greek.

Thousands of years of cultural exchange and contamination have left their traces in the DNA of Italians, whose genomic patrimony is among the most varied in Europe. The Latin language has also intermarried with many different cultures and peoples, mutating into the Latin or Romance languages of today. By the late Roman Republic (75 A.C) Classical Latin was established. It is still used as the official language of the Vatican and is studied by millions of people throughout the world. Some of the languages that evolved from the vulgar form of Latin have become world languages, like French and Spanish, whilst others are only spoken in small enclaves, like Ladin, which is heard only in the valleys of the Central and Eastern Alps (Switzerland and Trentino Alto Adige). Eastern Ladin dialects are connected to the Fruilan language, which inspired the poetics of Pier Paolo Pasolini.

Of the Indo-European Celtic languages, the oldest is probably Irish Gaelic, which is also spoken in parts of the United States by descendants of Irish immigrants.

The most ancient European language of all could well be the Basque language whose origins predate those of the Indo-European branch and which has characteristics in common with the Berber dialects of North Africa and the languages of the Caucasus. The most widely spoken language in the world is Chinese, the first language of around 1,2 billion people. Its origins can be traced to about 1250 B.C. during the late Shang dynasty. The earliest example of written Arabic dates to 512. The countries of the Middle East, like the Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait and Oman use Arabic for official documents and considerate it their mother tongue.

Il ladino orientale si identifica con il friulano, la celebre lingua poetica usata da Pier Paolo Pasolini. Tra le lingue celtiche di matrice indoeuropea la più antica è il gaelico, parlata in Irlanda ma anche negli Stati Uniti in conseguenza della massiccia immigrazione europea. Ma la palma della lingua più antica d’Europa spetta al basco, lingua precedente a quelle indoeuropee e affine ai dialetti berberi del Nord Africa e alle lingue caucasiche. Se il tamil è la più antica, il cinese è la prima lingua parlata dal maggior numero di persone nel mondo. Circa 1,2 miliardi di persone la parlano come prima lingua. o other country has contributed more to the world in terms of creativity than Italy. The unique qualities of the Made in Italy label are famous all over the world.

Italy was the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. The nation is awash with creative individuals, academic institutions and companies, clustered not only in big cities like Rome and Milan, but also in smaller towns and villages. Let’s start with the university of Salento, whose engineering faculty in Brindisi together with the Cittadella della Ricerca, trains the aerospace engineers of tomorrow. The specialist degree course in aerospace engineering is the first of its type to be offered in Puglia. With the exception of the more famous “University of Naples, Federico II” aerospace engineering department, the faculty is the only centre for this type of research and training in the South of Italy. Moving to Tuscany, we discover an area where over 600 potential “Steve Jobs” are working and where new ideas are born every day thanks to pooled opportunities and a spirit of collaboration. The Polo Tecnologico di Navacchio is situated a few kilometres from Pisa. It was born in 2000 and is affiliated to tech incubators in Rosignano and Cecina. It is the most important high-tech hub in Tuscany, representing an integrated and structured environment buzzing with innovation. The hub is designed to foster networking, and create connections among start-ups, businesses, research institutions and centres of excellence. If innovation is the motor of economic growth, integration and connection are the fuel.

In Siena, Gennaro Di Domenico is the founder and CEO of Glum Agency, the most important communications agency in the province of Siena. His vision which constantly encompasses new and higher goals is coupled to a vocation for business development, which has transformed the agency into a highly structured organisation, able to offer marketing and communication services for a range of brands and companies. Further up the ‘boot’ of Italy, in Mantova, which was the Italian "Capital of

Culture in 2016," we meet eight young graphic and industrial designers who have turned an industrial hangar into a hub of creativity: a sort of arch-woodwork / proto-carpentry workshop, called Realizzatori di Idee (Idea Makers) in which ideas become reality. In Trieste, Impact Hub is a co-working group of professionals who organise a calendar of happenings in the city, from book presentations and cooking courses, to English language events. The Floating Piers art installation was designed by the Bulgarian artist, Christo, but it nevertheless bears the Made in Italy hallmark. Christo settled on Lake Iseo as the location for his work and dedicated 22 months to realizing the project which has gained international recognition and fame.

È infatti attivo da qualche anno il primo corso di laurea specialistica in Ingegneria aerospaziale della Puglia, che insieme a quello molto più blasonato della “Federico II” di Napoli – dove è passata buona parte della storia dell’ingegneria aeronautica italiana - costituiscono gli unici centri di ricerca e formazione per quel che riguarda il settore nel Meridione. Salendo in Toscana troviamo un luogo dove lavorano più di 600 “Steve Jobs” italiani, e dove ogni giorno nascono nuove idee, opportunità e collaborazioni.

Alessandro Paiano, as an actor I like to be called Alex Paiano Bickel and in the music A.P. Bickel even if my first single “Getting Closer” came out with the name Alex P. Bickel. I was born in 1975.

Where do you come from?

I was born in Florence, Bickel is my mother’s family name, my father was from Puglia. At the moment I am based in London but I travel to New York very often.

Briefly, what is your background?

I studied chemistry then business, I was partner in business in a chocolate company, I still collaborate as a freelance with this company caring about the british market.

What do/did you work with?

I am an actor, musician and Import/Export manager.

During the years I was developing the choco UK market I started to study jazz singing and acting. I studied singing with the very talented Stefania Scarinzi at the Mabellini school in Pistoia then at the Jazz Accademy with the great Michael Garrick. I attended a few workshops with

In the moment I realised was unhappy and that the only way to get happy was to get back to the dreams that I was putting aside.

What did you imagine before moving. Deluded or surprised?

Moving to London I knew I was going to find a city where everything works better.

I am absolutely satisfied, now I have an agent that represents me here in London and in NYC, I do many auditions, for small roles, at the moment, but I am not in a rush, in the main time I am going ahead studying, I compose my music and I curate my radio program, “Everyone is invited”, which is about about Jazz, Art and Food.

Ho deciso di cambiare vita nel momento in cui ho capito che non ero felice e che l'unico modo per esserlo era riprendere in considerazione i sogni che avevo messo da parte.

Cosa si aspettava prima di trasferirsi? Deluso o soddisfatto?

Sapevo che avrei trovato una città in cui le cose funzionano meglio.

Sono assolutamente soddisfatto, ora ho un agente che mi rappresenta sia qui a Londra che su New York, spesso sono a fare audizioni, per il momento per piccoli ruoli ma non ho fretta, nel mentre continuo a studiare, compongo la mia musica e conduco un programma radio che si chiama “Everyone is invited” nel quale parlo di Jazz, Arte e Food.

Just to tell you one episode, in 2016 I collaborate with the prestigious art gallery Hauser & Wirth developing a chocolate wrapping by Ida Applebroog and Diter Roth, two giants of the contemporary art world. Was an incredible experience. I hope it will happen again soon. I am very attracted from the art world, it might be that I’ll apply for a Master here in London in order to develop my related know how.

Would you move again? If so, where would you go?

I think so, probably NYC, it's a city that intrigues me and afraids me at the same time. It looks like there is still possible to develope a real artistic career.

Where would you never return and why?

I think that I would go back every where I lived, each place gave me something that I hold with me with pleasure.

Hanami: the cherry tree blossoms in Japan Hanami: la fioritura dei ciliegi in Giappone

very spring a magical cyclical event occurs in Japan, as the country’s cherry trees burst into flower and the smells, songs and colours of the new season float through the air. ‘Hanami’ is the Japanese traditional custom of enjoying the transient beauty of flowers. It usually refers to cherry blossoms but there is also a more ancient tradition associated with plum blossom. During the spring, the Japanese (and also many foreigners) meet in the open air to contemplate the beauty of the blossoming cherry trees whose blooms form a ceiling of pink and white over their heads. The flowering of the cherry trees (sakura) represents innocence and simplicity and is a symbol of the brevity of life in the samurai culture. How often do we stop and consider what surrounds us? The act of stopping and gazing at the cherry blossom is loaded with emotion and meaning. Cherries bloom all over the world, also in Europe, but in Japan the ephemeral beauty of the flowers has a deep significance. When the cherries are blossoming, the Japanese stop and share the moment in celebrations with family and friends. There are events and open-air festivals in the nation’s cities, during which tourists and locals mix and take part in the rituals of this ancient celebration. Visitors can taste the special cakes made in this period, such as sakura mochi. Some events last into the evenings with coloured lights and many temples extend their opening hours to allow visits after dark. The precise dates of the cherry blossoming change from year to year, with forecasts made by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Usually peak bloom is during the last two weeks of March and the first two weeks

of April. The forecasts for 2018 are predicting the best blossoms to be from the 3rd to the 15th of April. While modern Hanami celebrations can be rowdy, the contemplative traditions and beliefs behind the observance are very much intact. In Tokyo the best places to see the cherry blossoms are Ueno Park and Chidorigafuchi. Visitors should also see Ameyoko market, the less well-known quarter of Yanaka, which was one of the few areas of the city that wasn’t bombed during the war and still has an atmosphere of the old city, the Harajuku quarter, where you can visit the Meiji temple, Takeshita Street and Omotesando, the fashion district of the city. In Kyoto, we advise Maruyam Park to see the cherry blossoms and if you are interested in visiting some temples, the complex of Kiyomizu Dera and the area of Higashiyama, as well as Kinkaku-ji, the golden temple.

In Osaka you should visit the Shinto temple, Yasaka, and the Zen, temple Kaoda-ji, in the area of Kawaramachi where there are many shops and the famous Nishiki Market. At nightfall, we recommend a visit to the Gion quarter and to end the day a wander through the narrow alleys of Pontocho. If you are lucky enough to be in Japan during the cherry blossom, there is nothing more beautiful than having a picnic in one of the parks and waiting for the evening to fall. The trees are lit up in an atmosphere that can only be described as magic.

gni primavera in Giappone si festeggia un’affascinante quanto magica ricorrenza. La cultura giapponese per definirla conserva la corrispettiva parola “hanami”, capace di inscenare odori, canti, colori orientali nella mente di chi la pronuncia. Che cos’è l’hanami? È la festa, anzi la tradizione suggestiva in cui tutti i giapponesi (e anche tanta gente da ogni parte del mondo) si riuniscono all’aria aperta per contemplare i colorati paesaggi in fiore, mentre il cielo si trasforma in un fitto tetto di fiori bianchi e rosa. È la fioritura del fiore di ciliegio (sakura) che rappresenta l’innocenza e la semplicità, ed è anche un simbolo della cultura samurai che lo associa alla brevità della vita. Quante volte ci siamo fermati, abbiamo alzato la testa e guardato ciò che ci circonda? Questa è una sensazione che guardando i ciliegi in fiore diventa uno spettacolo carico di emozioni. Probabilmente la fioritura dei ciliegi si può osservare in molte parti del mondo, tra cui anche in Italia. Ma in Giappone è qualcosa di più. Per i giapponesi l’osservazione dei ciliegi in fiore è un momento dell’anno da condividere e festeggiare insieme ai propri familiari e amici. Durante la fioritura dei ciliegi, in tutte le città giapponesi vengono organizzati eventi e festival all’aperto, che danno l’opportunità ai turisti di mescolarsi agli abitanti locali nell’osservare questo spettacolo naturale e partecipare ai loro riti. Un momento in cui i visitatori possono assaggiare dei dolci particolari, creati apposta per il periodo, come il sakura mochi. Alcuni eventi prevedono anche speciali illuminazioni serali mentre alcuni templi godono di aperture straordinarie per

poter essere visitati di sera, quando di solito sono chiusi al pubblico. Le date precise cambiano ogni anno e sono pur sempre una previsione approssimativa, ma sono solite coincidere con le ultime settimane di marzo e le prime di aprile. Per il 2018 le previsioni dicono che il periodo migliore è tra il 3 e il 15 aprile.

Per i cittadini del Sol Levante è uno dei momenti privilegiati per divertirsi insieme ma al contempo onorare tradizioni e credenze. A Tokyo i luoghi migliori per vedere i ciliegi in fiore sono il Parco Ueno e Chidorigafuchi. Da visitare inoltre il mercato di Ameyoko, il quartiere poco conosciuto di Yanaka, una delle poche zone di Tokyo a non aver subito bombardamenti e che mantiene ancora l’atmosfera della “vecchia” città, il quartiere di Harajuku, dove si trova il tempio Meiji, Takeshita Street e Omotesando la zona dei negozi moda di tendenza. A Kyoto, invece, consigliamo il Parco Maruyam per vedere l’hanami. Per chi vuole visitare qualche tempio sono consigliati il complesso di santuari di Kiyomizu Dera e la zona di Higashiyama, nonché il Kinkaku-ji, il tempio d’oro. A Osaka obbligatorio unire allo spettacolo dei ciliegi una visita al tempio shintoista Yasaka e al tempio zen Kaoda-ji, nella zona di Kawaramachi dove si trovano negozi e il famoso Nishiki Market. All’imbrunire una tappa è consigliata nel quartire di Gion per poi concludere la giornata nei vicoli stretti di Pontocho. Una proposta imperdibile per chi si trova in Giappone in questo periodo è quella di organizzare un picnic in uno di questi parchi e aspettare fino a tarda sera. Gli alberi si illuminano creando un’atmosfera magica.

ressage, commonly translated from the French as “training”, is an ancient and noble discipline, with origins in the Italian Renaissance. Noble families would send their sons to learn the art of horsemanship and the ability to train a horse was considered a prestigious accomplishment. The idea behind dressage is to accentuate the natural movements and aptitudes of the horse which should be elegant and synchronised with those of the rider. The sport is practised at all levels from amateur to the Olympic Games. The lightness and apparent ease of movement of horse and rider belie the extreme difficulty of the sport whose aim is to demonstrate the horse’s level of training through the performance of graded exercises. The horse should display harmony of movement, restraint and total submission to the imperceptible commands of the rider. The rider seeks to create a symbiotic relationship with the horse, using intense concentration and patience.

Dressage competitions consist in a series of tests which are performed by each horse in turn, in about 7 minutes. Usually around 36 movements are performed before a panel of three to five judges; the exercises follow a logical progression and are carried out in a rectangular arena measuring 20x40 metres for lower level competitions and 20x60 for more advanced levels. At various positions on the side-lines of the arena are cones with letters on them which serve as a reference for where a movement is to be performed. The standard dressage letters for positions on the sides of the arena are A-K-V-E-S-H-C-M-R-B-P-F. The letters D-L-X-I-G are positions inside the arena along a central line. Tests are performed in each of the three gaits: walking, trotting and cantering which include a number of variations. Each test is segmented into a number of sequential blocks which may contain one or more movements.

l Dressage, dal francese “raddrizzamento/addestramento”, è un’antichissima e nobile disciplina nata nel Rinascimento italiano, quando le famiglie ed i casati di più alto lignaggio frequentavano le Scuole di Cavalleria e il saper addestrare alla perfezione un cavallo era considerata una vera e propria arte. Il Dressage ha lo scopo di mettere in evidenza le andature naturali e l'attitudine del cavallo che deve esprimersi con eleganza ed in completa sintonia con il proprio cavaliere ed è una disciplina praticata a livelli olimpionici. La leggerezza, l’apparente facilità e l’eleganza dei movimenti non farebbero mai pensare che si tratti di una disciplina estremamente difficile, come in realtà il dressage è. Il suo scopo è quello di mostrare - attraverso vari livelli di difficoltà nell’esecuzione degli esercizi - il grado di addestramento raggiunto dal cavallo attraverso lo sviluppo armonico dei suoi movimenti, il suo impulso, la sua fiduciosa sottomissione agli ordini quasi impercettibili del fantino. Quest’ultimo deve creare una sorta di simbiosi con il cavallo nel dressage, uno sport fatto di grande concentrazione e pazienza. Una gara viene chiamata “ripresa” dura circa 7 minuti e prevede circa 36 movimenti da eseguire secondo una logica successione su un campo di forma rettangolare di dimensioni 20x40 metri per le gare di basso livello e 20x60 in quelle di livello medio alto, davanti a una giuria composta da tre a cinque componenti. Viene richiesto di compiere delle figure in un rettangolo 20×60 o 20×40, in cui vengono disposte, come riferimento, lettere conosciute e uguali in tutto il mondo (dall’entrata in senso orario: A-K-V-E-S-H-C-MR-B-P-F).

Altre lettere (D-L-X-I-G) sono disposte all’interno lungo la linea del centro. Le figure si svolgono alle tre andature, passo, trotto e galoppo, nelle varianti di riunito, medio ed allungato. I giudici

Some of the movements are quite spectacular, such as Flying Changes when the horse changes lead at the canter at every stride, the Pirouette, a 360 degree turn at a canter, collected gaits, a shortening of stride in which the horse brings its hindquarters underneath itself, the Passage, a collected trot with a great elevation of stride, and the Piaffé, a trot in place.

The Freestyle variation of dressage (also known as KUR from German kür, "freestyle") is hugely popular as the movements of horse and rider are accompanied by music. The figures are carefully choreographed to meet the technical requirements of the competition while following the rhythms of music chosen by the competitor.

Marks are awarded for the music that is chosen, which can be of any genre, although songs are not encouraged. At top levels the music is often composed specifically for the occasion. Commissions for the music used at the Olympics can cost thousands of euro and involve several composers writing original scores. Further marks are given for interpretation of the music. Transitions should correspond to transitions in the music. Movements and figures should be started and finished at obvious musical phrases. In KUR the judges’ marks take into consideration the degree of difficulty of each movement. A more complex movement performed satisfactorily will gain higher marks than a simpler movement performed well. The country which dominates the higher levels of dressage is Germany. Not all horses are suited to the intense training that dressage requires. Some of the breeds that are most adapted are the Hanoverian, the Lusitano, the Oldenburg, the Andalusian, the Danish Warmblood and the Westphalian. Horses tend to come into their own later in life, at around 14 years, in comparison to jump racehorses who peak at around 7 to 10 years. As for the riders, dressage is a sport for everyone, men, women, the young and the old.

Chiaramente, la spiegazione deve essere estremamente tecnica e precisa in modo da permettere al cavaliere di correggerla con il lavoro futuro. Tra le figure più spettacolari ci sono i Cambi di Galoppo in Aria, la Pirouette, dove il cavallo fa un giro completo su di se con gli anteriori ruotando sui posteriori, il Galoppo Riunitissimo e raccolto, il Passage, un trotto molto cadenzato, ed il Piaffé, il trotto sul posto.

Esiste una variante molto apprezzata, il Freestyle, noto anche come KUR, dove il cavaliere, o l’amazzone, esegue una ripresa da lui creata che contenga i movimenti obbligatori della categoria, accompagnato da una musica scelta da lui ed il ritmo della musica deve seguire i movimenti del cavallo nelle varie andature. È valutata anche la scelta della musica, che può essere di ogni genere ma preferibilmente non cantata. Creare la colonna sonora per una KUR da olimpiadi può costare qualche migliaio di euro, visto che i campioni si fanno comporre le musiche appositamente da musicisti e ne utilizzano più di 5 diverse. L'interpretazione e scelta della musica è valutata dai giudici.

Nel KUR è giudicato il calcolo del rischio: decide il cavaliere se effettuare una ripresa facile o complessa, sapendo che un percorso difficile eseguito discretamente vale di più di uno facile eseguito bene. La Germania domina i livelli più alti del dressage e non tutti i cavalli si prestano a questa disciplina: sono state create razze apposite, come la olandese, la belga e molte razze tedesche, che danno il meglio verso i 14 anni, diversamente al salto ostacoli, dove si prediligono soggetti giovani, intorno ai 6 anni. Uno sport adatto a tutti, senza nessuna limitazione: uomini, donne, bambini e anziani.

he “Skin Cancer Unit” is founded on the expertise of a group of researchers and doctors who aim to offer effective and innovative care to patients effected by skin tumours. The centre seeks to provide prompt and early diagnosis and surgical interventions. The Unit uses the new non-invasive diagnostic technique of Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy to perform “in vivo” histology, a procedure that is only available in 4 dermatological centres in Italy. This technology has brought significant improvements in the field of skin tumour diagnostics and has also drastically reduced the number of ‘unnecessary’ surgical removals. It also allows surgeons to remove cutaneous neoplasms using the Mohs procedure, which can be employed in the majority of cases, including those that are more complicated. For several years the Unit has collaborated with a group of bioengineers at the University of Siena, in the development of digital tools to increase the efficacy of “mapping moles”. This collaboration led to the Teledermatologia project, for which

Prof. Rubegni is coordinator in the European Society of Dermatology and Venereology. The project aims to provide assistance to elderly patients in Homes within the Province of Siena, reinforcing collaboration among specialists who work in outpatient clinics and where possible among General Practitioners.

Thanks to funding from the European Society of Dermatology and Venereology, the Dermatology Clinic in Siena, has become the centre of reference for a European wide project aimed at creating diagnostic procedures that increase the likelihood that cases of melanoma are recognized precociously.

a “Skin Cancer Unit” ruota attorno ad un gruppo di ricercatori e medici che hanno come scopo quello di offrire una risposta concreta ed innovativa a tutte le esigenze dei pazienti affetti da tumori della pelle. I due settori di sviluppo di questa Unità sono la diagnosi precoce mediante tecniche di diagnosi non invasiva e la dermochirurgia. La Skin Cancer Unit può impiegare e una nuova metodica di diagnosi non invasiva conosciuta come Microscopia Laser Confocale. Si tratta di uno strumento, al momento presente solo in 4 centri dermatologici italiani, in grado di eseguire una istologia in “vivo”. Il suo impiego ha permesso di migliorare in modo significativo la diagnosi dei tumori della pelle e allo stesso tempo di diminuire in maniera drastica le asportazioni “inutili”. La sua applicazione rende anche possibile ai dermochirurghi l’asportazione di neoplasie cutanee mediante tecnica di Mohs, metodica che permette di affrontare e risolvere nella maggioranza dei casi anche la più complessa patologia neoplastica cutanea. Da molti anni una stretta e proficua collaborazione con un gruppo di Bio-ingegneri dell’Università di Siena, ha consentito lo sviluppo e la messa a punto di sistemi digitali sempre più efficaci per l’esecuzione della cosiddetta “mappatura dei nei”. Con loro è stato inoltre avviato un progetto della Teledermatologia, disciplina della quale il Prof. Rubegni è coordinatore sella Società Europea di Dermatologia e Venereologia per assistere a distanza gli anziani ricoverati presso le Residenze protette della Provincia di Siena, concretizzando una efficace collaborazione con i Colleghi specialisti ambulatoriali e ove possibile, con i medici di Medicina Generale. Grazie ad un finanziamento dalla Società

Europea di Dermatologia e Venereologia, la Clinica Dermatologica di Siena, è centro di riferimento di un progetto continentale mirato a creare un percorso diagnostico ottimale per il riconoscimento del melanoma nelle sue fasi precoci.

Jedes Frühjahr in Japan feiert man einen faszinierenden und magischen Anlass. Die japanische Kultur, um es zu definieren, bewahrt das entsprechende Wort "hanami", fähig, Gerüche, Lieder, orientalische Farben in den Meinungen von denjenigen zu inszenieren, die es aussprechen. Was ist Hanami? Es ist die Party, im Gegenteil die suggestive Tradition, in der sich alle Japaner (und auch viele Menschen aus der ganzen Welt) unter freiem Himmel versammeln, um die farbenfrohen blühenden Landschaften zu betrachten, während der Himmel sich in ein dichtes Dach aus weißen und rose Blumen verwandelt. Es ist die Blüte der Kirschblüte (Sakura), die für Unschuld und Einfachheit steht und auch ein Symbol der Samurai-Kultur, die es mit der Kürze des Lebens verbindet. Wie oft haben wir angehalten, wir haben den Kopf erhoben und uns angesehen, was uns umgibt? Das ist ein Gefühl, dass dass das Beobachten der blühenden Kirschbäume zu einer Show voller Emotionen wird. Два сектора этого объединения занимаются ранними диагнозами посредством не инвазивным методом и дерматохирургии. «Skin Cancer Unit» может использовать также новую методику не инвазивного диагноза, известную также как микроскопия Laser Confocale. Речь идет об инструменте, который на данный момент есть только в 4 дерматологических центрах в Италии, способный выполнять гистологические операции на живом организме. Его использование позволило заметно улучшить установление кожных опухолей и в то же время уменьшить «ненужные» удаления. Также инструмент сделал возможным для дерматохирургов удалять кожные новообразования с помощью метода Моса, методики, которая позволила решить большинство случаев даже самой сложных кожных патологических новообразований. Много лет плотное и плодотворное сотрудничество с группой биоинженеров из университета Сиены обусловило развитие цифровых эффективных систем для выполнения так называемой «разметки родинок». Die "Skin Cancer Unit" dreht sich aus einer Gruppe von Forschern und Ärzten zusammen, deren Ziel ist, eine konkrete und innovative Antwort auf alle Bedürfnisse von Patienten mit Hautkrebs zu bieten.

Die beiden Bereiche der Entwicklung dieser Einheit sind die frühzeitige Diagnose durch nicht-invasive Diagnosetechniken und Dermochirurgie. Die "Skin Cancer Unit" kann eine neue nicht-invasive diagnostische Methode anwenden, die als konfokale Lasermikroskopie bekannt ist. Es ist ein Instrument, das derzeit nur in 4 dermatologischen Zentren in Italien zur Verfügung steht und Es kann eine "lebende" Histologie durchzuführen. Seine Verwendung hat ermöglicht, die Diagnose von Hauttumoren signifikant zu verbessern und gleichzeitig die Entfernung "nutzlose" drastisch zu reduzieren.
