A rather handsome, former farmhouse surrounded by open farmland, is an impressive, yellow brick, period property cutting a striking presence in its rural situation a couple of miles south of the fenland town of Whittlesey, about 9 miles from the centre of Peterborough. The delightful grounds, extend to circa 2 acres, are a wonderful asset to this superb country residence, so too the many outbuildings both adjoining and detached from the house.

The house alone provides over 5,500 square feet of accommodation with the ground floor containing no less than 5 commodious reception rooms, a large kitchen dining room, a sizeable utility room and a storeroom. There are 2 downstairs WCs, one at each end of the house. The first floor currently offers 5 substantial double bedrooms, 3 en suites, a fully fitted, family bathroom and an enormous billiard room. Adjoining the house are some further expansive storerooms and garages, and standing separate is a block incorporating 2 stables, more garages and another storeroom.

You approach the property from Turningtree Road which leads south from Whittlesey, having passed the train station on the way out of town. Metal gates between curving brick walls are a fitting entrance for this fine property, which open onto a gravelled drive that sweeps past the house and extends all the way to the garages and outbuildings at the far end. There is an exceptional amount of space for parking vehicles.

At the front of the house, huge bays have been added to increase the already considerable proportions of the dining room and drawing room, whilst further reception rooms including a conservatory and a very spacious entrance hall, overlook the gardens to the south.

The 27 foot kitchen dining room links with one of the south facing reception rooms through double doors and also has sliding doors onto the drive behind, most convenient for unloading shopping. It is fitted with an abundance of Shaker-style units and contains a creamcoloured Aga.

Throughout the entire house ceilings are exceptionally high and windows are large and plentiful so that natural light fills the interior.

Some lovely original features are retained such as decorative arches, cornices, ceiling roses, and some period fireplaces, whilst the entrance hall has a parquet floor and vintage stained-glass panes.

The enormous, over 31 foot billiard room on the first floor is a particularly notable space. The floor is laid with beautiful herringbone parquet, the ceiling is partially vaulted, the walls are panelled with dark timber and a huge, stone,Tudor-style fireplace stands at the end of the room. The billiard table alone is a truly splendid piece.

The mature, sunny garden is very large, around 2 acres, surrounded by a good number of tall, majestic trees which not only provide shelter but are a beautiful backdrop to the glorious garden. Divided into different areas, there is terracing around the house with steps down to sweeping lawns, there are herbaceous borders, a pergolacovered walkway supporting colourful climbers, a sizeable vegetable garden with 2 greenhouses and a stone-edged pond with a feature bridge, its path leading into a little spinney. There is also a charming, hexagonal, timber summerhouse with a slate roof, and behind the house, some old timber stables.

The size and location of Turntree House is ideal for a family with a choice of three state primary and nursery schools and a state secondary school, Sir Harry Smith Community College, all rated Good by Ofsted, in Whittlesey. The popular Stamford school for boys and girls is also within easy reach, only 30 minutes away by road or, as an alternative option, 20 minutes by train from Whittlesey train station.

The town also has a medical centre, supermarkets, independent shops, a variety of pubs and takeaways, sports clubs and facilities and the Manor Leisure Centre which includes a swimming pool, fitness classes and a gym. A supermarket is currently being built in Whittlesey; there is a Tesco at Ramsey which is only 10 minutes’ drive and a Morrisons at Stanground, approximately 12 minutes away.

Trains from the station - close by as on the south side of town - take less than 10 minutes into Peterborough where frequent commuter trains to London King’s Cross take around 45 minutes, whilst in the Ely direction, connections are to Cambridge and other towns and cities further east.

The centre of the city of Peterborough with its stunning cathedral, is about 15 or 20 minutes by car. It also offers a wide range of shops, supermarkets, cafes, restaurants and sports centres including a lido outdoor swimming pool. The Key Theatre is another attraction by the river and Ferry Meadows is a popular leisure park with trails and cycle routes round lakes, a lovely area full of nature for all the family to enjoy.

For private education, there is a good choice of superb schools (Junior and Senior) in the area. For instance, Oundle is about 20 miles (30 minutes) away, King’s School in Ely is about 25 miles (35 minutes) and Wisbech Grammar is 17 miles (25 minutes).
