Columbia is waiting for you to step outside & explore – what are you waiting for? Each day, we’re watching the sun rise earlier and set later, the water levels of the lake climb, and nature come back to life with pops of green everywhere from the grass to the leaves on the trees. We are ready to welcome spring with open arms and cannot wait to embrace the cool mornings and the warm days. With this issue, we are celebrating all of the awesome things that you can do outdoors in Columbia this spring. We are excited to introduce you to the local people and the businesses that are passionate about the outdoors and who will educate you and provide you the gear, clothing, and fuel to enjoy your adventures. How special is it that we live in a city that boasts so many outdoor places to explore? Columbia has riverside trails, the 2nd largest lake in the state for fishing and boating, incredible state parks to bike and hike, a national park to watch synchronized fireflies in late spring, historic sites to learn from, and ample green space for picnics and pick up games of frisbee. We had the privilege to sit down with the remarkable naturalist Dr. Rudy Mancke, where he shared a really good point with us: you can go outside and enjoy a walk in the woods, marvel at butterfly on your finger, and make memories, all for free! As we enter this wonderful next season, our wish for you is to be as inspired as we are by our city's natural surroundings. making the food,” Adam said. “The food is our mission but everyone always gathers around the kitchen while food is being made whether it’s at home or at the store. It’s the conversation that happens, the jokes that are told, the bonds that are made. I think when you take that time to prepare meals from scratch, whether they’re you’re greatgrandmother’s recipes or new recipes, something special is allowed to happen.” Order one of your traditional favorite Italian dishes from the menu, like Chicken Parmesan, Lasagna, or Baked Spaghetti, and be absolutely delighted by how incredible each of the dishes tastes. Or branch out and try one of the speciality dishes that Alodia’s is well known for like the Bowtie Gratinata, the Chef Special, or the Duck Penne Gorgonzola, all of which have people

coming back to Alodia’s over and over again. “I enjoy the opportunity to meet so many great people from doing this,” Adam said. “Our team is number one to me. The people that I get to work with day in and day out is high on the list of things that I get out of sharing Alodia’s with our guests. I love what I do because of our team. Our culture here is amazing. They are all dedicated to excellence and quality, and I am so proud of everyone on our team. Authentic: Dr. Rudy Mancke “ W H E N YO U ’ R E D O I N G W H AT YO U LO V E , I T ’ S T H E C A K E ,” explained Naturalist Rudy Mancke. “And when people love what you’re doing? That’s the icing.” With curious eyes a fierce ocean-blue and skin tanned from years of marveling at the outside world, and with a voice that’s distinct, rhythmic, and interesting, you can’t help but give him all of your attention when he’s discussing his life’s story and passion with you. Rudy was born just after WWII in 1945, and his mother would say that ever since he could roll around in a playpen, he’s loved picking things up and exploring. As soon as he learned to read, books became the most important possession and the library his favorite place. He devoured every book in the children’s section, and when it came time, the librarian gave him access to the nature section.

“The connections in nature are the same here as they are in different parts of the world.” Rudy was drafted into the Vietnam War while in Graduate School at USC. Though not ideal, he decided to make the best with the hand that he had been dealt and he absorbed his experiences and surroundings overseas. He was an x-ray technician and a cross-trained medic, which allowed him to learn about the human body. Any opportunity that he could, he would go off and explore by taking walks in the western Germany woods to learn about the local wildlife.

“There is no substitute for experience.” After returning from Europe, he taught high school biology and geology. As the only known naturalist in the state, the SC State Museum reached out and asked him to start and curate their natural

history collection in 1975. It was his dream job. From there, he connected with other like-minded individuals at SCETV and the show NatureScene was born. From 1978 through 2003, Rudy walked, explored, discovered, and shared everything from the mountains to the sea and beyond.

“Be naturally curious and be helpful to others.” Today, Dr. Mancke is still as curious as ever and is still sharing his passion with the world. He teaches Graduate School at USC, hosting NatureNotes on SC Public Radio News and Talk each weekday, and takes groups on nature walks. To try and summarize all that Naturalist Rudy Mancke has accomplished in his lifetime on one page is impossible. FAVORITE PLACE TO PADDLE IN COLUMBIA: Cedar Creek in Congaree National Park is my favorite, by far. There is magic there; the cypress and tupelo canopy just pulls you into a different world. I see something new every trip, even though I’ve paddled Congaree National Park 500 times or more. And, the flat blackwater of Cedar Creek is very easy to paddle, even for a novice canoer or kayaker. HELPFUL TIP FOR A NEW PADDLER: Always take a friend to share the fun, and help you get the boat off your car! Advice from a local shop is good.

WHEN BOB AND BERNIE COLLINS recently moved to Garden Spot Village, Bob was curious: would he still be able to pursue his passion for welding and metalworking? A machinist and millwright by trade, Bob has enjoyed metalworking in his spare time since he was ten years old. After some coordination with Garden Spot Village, help from friends, and the recruitment of other interested residents, Bob established the official Garden Spot Village Metal Crafters on campus. The Garden Spot Village community donated machining tools, welders, clamps, and other materials, to make the metal shop a reality. Now the group is growing more than ever, with designated members training others on machines, teaching those who are new to welding, and collaborating on projects together. Living a purposeful life in a thriving community is at the heart of Garden Spot Village—because crafting a meaningful future never ends. We would love to hear your story, introduce you to some residents and give you the opportunity to learn a little more about the Garden Spot story.

Social Mission: PAALS AT F I G , W E B E L I E V E in the power of a community that works together to identify needs and find solutions— one that creates connections and is passionate about helping its neighbors. For our 2018 Social Mission Partner, we’ve chosen Palmetto Animal Assisted Life Services (PAALS), an impactful non-profit whose good works contribute immensely to our thriving, local community. PAALS is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that is committed to enriching and empowering children and adults with physical disabilities and social needs by training service animals and providing animal assisted educational and recreational activities. At PAALS, each puppy is nurtured with love, trained by professionals, and partnered with passion on each step of the journey from puppy to PAALS Service Dog. As part of the training

process, PAALS dogs provide services to locations across the state including summer camps, reading programs, and internships. These outreach programs not only expose the dogs to a variety of environments, but also educate the community on dog care as well as the services that assistance dogs provide.

16 that allows for youth to work with professional dog trainers to reinforce the skills of the assistance dogs presently in training to help people with disabilities in our community. The focus of the program is to build teamwork, teach leadership skills, and to reinforce the importance of community service.

“Our Summer PAALS program has been such a success that we have seen a need for youth to connect with our dogs during the school year as well,” said Mitzie Renwick, PAALS Development Coordinator. An After School PAALS program was created to fit that need.
