Former Bethlehem Mayor Makes Stroke Recovery Strides at Good Shepherd

RECOVERING FROM ONE STROKE can be daunting enough. But two strokes in a matter of a month? That’s exactly what Kenneth “Ken” Smith, who served as the city of Bethlehem’s mayor from 1988 to 1997, faced on his road to recovery.

Determined to return home and be as independent as possible, Ken specifically chose Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital in Center Valley for his inpatient stroke rehab care.

“I watched it being built,” Ken said of the 123,000-square-foot hospital that opened in summer 2023, “and never, ever thought I’d be here as a patient.”

Ken said he selected Good Shepherd for a number of reasons, including the state-of-theart facility, a regimen of daily, intensive therapy he knew he needed to return home, and the “fabulous” doctors, nurses, and therapists.

“I chose to come here because I knew Good Shepherd’s reputation,” Ken said. “It’s been everything I expected and more than I expected. I had a class-A experience.”

After completing specialized stroke rehabilitation, Ken headed home to attend regular lunch and breakfast groups with friends, spend time with family, and dine with his wife, Barbara, at their favorite local restaurants.

“I don’t know that we know how lucky we are to have Good Shepherd here in the Lehigh Valley,” Ken said. “People come from everywhere to be here.”

SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY IN FULL BLOOM in Lehigh Valley. Whether strolling through rows of flowers, meeting giraffes, or cooling off with a scoop of small-batch ice cream, the region is bursting with energy, character, and unforgettable experiences.

AT BEE WELL BLOOMS in Germansville, the season starts with tiny seedlings and grows into armfuls of florals. Owners Sarah and Kevin Smeltz cultivate a kaleidoscope of blooms on their picturesque 40-acre farm, where guests are invited to stop by during business hours to build their own fresh-picked bouquets. On Saturdays, their flower stand brightens the Emmaus Farmers Market, where their cheerful stall overflows with peonies, sunflowers, cosmos, and friendly conversation. It’s not just flowers that bring the farm to life— Bee Well Blooms is also home to some feathered friends, including pet turkeys and geese. But don’t worry, they’re as friendly as they are curious!

AT THE LEHIGH VALLEY ZOO, families can explore the wild right in their backyard. Located on the Trexler Nature Preserve, this zoo’s unique landscape is home to penguins, giraffes, otters, owls, kangaroos, and more, all nestled within rolling hills and wooded trails. Say hello to the animals, and be sure to check the zoo’s calendar for monthly events and educational programs. For those in the know, the exit route is half the fun: take the long way out for a splashy drive through the creek, and, with a bit of luck, catch a glimpse of the buffalo herd grazing just beyond the trees.

For $125, an annual pass includes free daytime admission along with discounts on camps, animal encounters, parties, and gift shop purchases. Passholders also enjoy savings on the Winter Light Spectacular and discounted or free entry to AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums nationwide.

Local Woman Embracing Middle Age Optimistically Thanks to St. Luke’s and DNA Answers

that she carries a genetic mutation for breast and ovarian cancer through the St. Luke’s DNA Answers research program.

“I was totally floored!” said the 40-yearold mother of two. “In an instant, my world flipped upside-down.”

But Jillian was not left to process the news on her own. Within the hour, she was called by St. Luke’s and was offered a consultation the next day with one of the Network’s genetic counselors for follow-up questions and guidance on next steps.

“I trust St. Luke’s,” she said. “I appreciate that this call came quickly.”

DNA Answers is a no-cost community health research program that St. Luke’s is offering with their population genomics partner, Helix. The organizations launched the DNA Answers research study as part of an ongoing commitment by St. Luke’s to the community it serves to offer the latest medical technologies that support a “precision medicine” approach in healthcare.

In January 2024, St. Luke’s launched DNA Answers, which involves ‘medical grade’ analysis of participants’ DNA through Helix’s Whole Exome(+) Sequencing (WES) technology designed specifically for healthcare purposes.

“We have arrived at a historic turning point in the history of medicine— the ability to use information stored in patients’ DNA to improve the accuracy of certain treatments for the

individual patient,” said Aldo Carmona, MD, St. Luke’s Senior Vice President of Clinical Integration.

Christopher N. Chapman, MD, Medical Director for St. Luke’s Precision Medicine and the Principal Investigator for the DNA Answers study, explained, “Our study initially aims to enroll 100,000 participants over four years. Participating individuals, like Mrs. Leister, are provided genetic screening at no cost, informing them of important health information about inherited risks for serious conditions, such as a certain type of cardiovascular disease and certain types of cancer. This knowledge allows the participant to make proactive decisions in conjunction with their healthcare provider to potentially delay, reduce, or even prevent these conditions from occurring later in life. Jillian’s personalized DNA Answers report, shared with her via the St. Luke’s confidential patient portal, revealed that she carries the BRCA2 gene. Mutations in the BRCA2 gene are associated with multiple cancers, including breast and ovarian cancers.

“I felt like a ticking time bomb,” Jillian recalled. It also puts her young daughters, ages seven and ten, at a 50% risk of inheriting the BRCA2 gene.

The genetic counselor, Corrine Fillman, MS, CGC, explained Jillian’s results in depth and offered to refer her to St. Luke’s specialists for next steps to address the issues linked to the BRCA2 mutation.

Within a few weeks, Jillian met with St. Luke’s gynecologic surgeon, Rick Boulay, MD, who advised her that preventive surgical removal of her reproductive organs would greatly reduce her chances for gynecologic cancer.

“It was a no-brainer,” Jillian said, and Dr. Boulay operated within a few weeks. “He’s fantastic!” she said, adding that the preemptive surgery was uneventful and “made sense since I’m through having babies.” Her mother, who has no history of cancer, is having her own blood drawn this month on the advice of her daughter.

Jillian Leister, of Green Lane, Montgomery County, found out her cancer risk through St. Luke’s DNA Answers.

DNA Answers may also allow participants to keep learning from their DNA in the future. Since each participant’s genetic information has been sequenced and stored, it allows future clinical genomic tests to be run, with a provider’s order and patient consent, without the need to collect an additional sample. This could help providers tailor care options and prescribe medications even more accurately and effectively, as well as provide patients access to ongoing genetic insights to continue learning about their health throughout their lifetime.

Currently, Jillian is undergoing routine surveillance screening for signs of breast cancer, with alternating MRIs and mammograms every six months, with consultation from Fawn Wolf, CRNP, nurse practitioner-breast specialist. She’s planning to undergo a double mastectomy followed by breast reconstruction.

“I’m at peace now that I have knowledge, and knowledge is power,” Jillian said. Her husband, who has been her rock of support during this ordeal, had his genetic testing done through DNA Answers, she said. “He’s good, has no mutations.”

Having recently turned 40, Jillian said she’s optimistic about her long-term health. She encourages her relatives and friends to participate in DNA Answers, saying, “Do it. It’s provided at no cost and could save your life.” Some friends, in addition to her mother, have taken this advice.

“I feel super thankful to St. Luke’s for offering this program and making their medical experts available,” Jillian said.

How BSI Embraces Pet Companionship in Employee Benefits

AT BSI, IT’S ALL ABOUT BENEFITS especially those that reflect the evolving needs of today’s workforce. That increasingly includes supporting not just employees, but also their beloved pets.

As a nationally recognized employee benefits consulting firm, BSI believes true well-being goes beyond traditional healthcare. It includes the relationships, routines, and everyday sources of joy that enrich our lives. That’s why BSI embraces people-first, forward-thinking strategies, recognizing the powerful role pets play in both emotional and physical health.

Research shows that pet ownership promotes increased physical activity, reduces stress, and eases feelings of loneliness. For many, caring for a pet brings structure, purpose, and deep emotional connection—key components of long-term mental wellness.

“Growing up with dogs has deeply shaped my well-being. Even on tough days, their presence and daily walks help clear my mind, lift my spirits, and keep me going,” shared Jess Begliomini, People and Culture Associate.

In today’s workplace, where holistic well-being is a necessity rather than a luxury, BSI believes the human–pet bond deserves a place in the benefits conversation. That’s why the team advocates for offerings like pet insurance. Helping cover veterinary costs not only eases financial stress but also shows employees that their company values what matters most to them.

“My dog, Lovebug, is more than a companion—she grounds and comforts me, reminding me to breathe when life feels overwhelming.”

Beth Shoemaker, Director, Customer Service

BSI’s commitment to “all creatures great and small” reflects its values. By supporting the meaningful connections that bring employees joy, whether with family, friends, or pets, BSI helps foster stronger, healthier communities in and beyond the workplace.

BSI is proud to be a benefits consultant that truly understands the impact of pet companionship. They recognize that sometimes, a thriving workplace culture starts with a wagging tail, a gentle purr, or a well-earned treat.

From June 23–29, Historic Downtown Bethlehem rolls out prix fixe menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at participating restaurants. A few weeks later, from July 15–21, the SouthSide Arts District shows off its eclectic eateries with special menus and delicious deals. It’s the perfect excuse to sample something new—or revisit a favorite patio. One standout is the lovely parklet outside Fegley’s Brew Works, located on the recently named Best Main Street in the country by USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

With two dynamic downtown districts, each with its own rhythm and charm, Bethlehem invites exploration. Browse boutiques and galleries, enjoy open-air dining, and catch live performances as the sun sets against one-ofa-kind historic backdrops like the Moravian Church Settlements on the North Side—recently designated as only the nation’s 26th UNESCO World Heritage Site—or the former industrial giant Bethlehem Steel on the South Side. Whether visiting for a weekend or calling it home, there’s no better time to experience the magic of Bethlehem in the summer.

CASUAL CRAFT BEVERAGE LOVERS and aficionados alike know they’re in for a treat the moment they walk into Five Maidens Cider Company, where a wall full of ribbons, medals, and trophies tells the story of their excellence. As a cornerstone of the Lehigh Valley’s craft beverage community, Five Maidens is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience top-tier, award-winning hard cider.

Avid homebrewers since 2009, co-owners Andrew and Brian were introduced to the cider world when one of the pair’s

family members was diagnosed with celiac disease. Since hard cider is naturally gluten-free, they were quick to begin experimenting with various recipes.

Each batch is crafted with locally sourced apples, resulting in standout flavor profiles like Ms. Jackson, a gold medalwinning Evercrisp single varietal at the 2024 US Cider Open; Valance, a cherry cider that earned First Place at the 2025 PA Farm Show and multiple national awards; and Dart, a tart blend recognized at both the Great Lakes International Cider

Co-owner Andrew David

and Perry Competition and the Great American Cider Competition.

Their passion and experimentation eventually culminated in the opening of their ultra-charming taproom in SouthSide Bethlehem. Beyond its exceptional beverages, the taproom is a communal gathering spot.

For those eager to delve deeper into the region’s rich tapestry of craft beverages, the Lehigh Valley Brewers Guild offers a comprehensive guide detailing member establishments, including Five Maidens Cider Company.

This booklet serves as a passport to the area’s diverse breweries and cideries, encouraging locals and visitors to embark on flavorful adventures and support the region’s brewing community. Visit Five Maidens Cider Company to learn more.

LATELY, THE AIR ALONG THIRD

STREET in SouthSide

Bethlehem has carried a sweet new scent—and it’s turning heads. That heavenly aroma of sugar and vanilla is coming from Wondaffle, the latest (and sweetest!) addition to the SouthSide Arts District.

Located at the corner of Third and Taylor Streets, Wondaffle is serving up golden, freshly pressed Belgianstyle waffles topped with indulgent fixings and paired with rich, creamy homemade ice cream from the local legends at Batch Microcreamery. This dynamic dessert spot is the newest venture from the same team

behind Batch in Center Valley and Twisted & Dipped, the chocolatedipped fruit and treat bar on Northside Bethlehem’s Main Street.

At Wondaffle, the waffles are crisp on the outside, warm and fluffy on the inside. Guests can choose from a menu of popular combinations or build a custom waffle with toppings that range from classic whipped cream and strawberries to over-the-top cookie crumbles and sweet drizzles. Add a scoop (or two) of Batch’s smallbatch ice cream, and it’s the perfect bite of summer. It’s a “wondaffle” addition to Bethlehem’s evergrowing food scene.

Nourishing Our Neighbors

FOR MANY, THE SIMPLE JOY of coming home from school to a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup, a classic PB&J, or a warm bowl of mac and cheese brings back comforting memories. These beloved staples are always at the top of Second Harvest Food Bank’s most requested food list. Because everyone deserves to experience the comfort that food can bring, Second Harvest invites the community to join them in the

fight to end food insecurity in our communities.

Community members are encouraged to get involved in a few meaningful ways: host a neighborhood food drive, volunteer time to help with food sorting or packing, or pick up extra staple items during the next grocery run. Donations can be dropped off at the food bank Monday through Thursday between 10 AM and 2 PM .

A single can of soup or an hour of donated time can make a meaningful difference, and Second Harvest is here to support every step of the way. Their dedicated development team works tirelessly to connect generous neighbors with impactful, easy ways to get involved, from organizing food drives to answering questions. Making a great park system even better

ALLENTOWN’S PARKS have long been a backdrop for connection. On a sunny afternoon, they’re filled with folks enjoying a picnic under the trees, a stroll along the water, or family photos among the flowers and open skies. Friends of the Allentown Parks is dedicated to preserving these shared spaces and encouraging the community to enjoy everything they offer.

Founded in 2008, Friends of the Allentown Parks is led by Executive Director Rosaria Stoops and supported by a passionate volunteer board. Together, they work year-round to protect and enhance Allentown’s more than 2,000 acres of green space, including active parks, rose gardens, rivers, lakes, and peaceful fishing streams.

Through free educational programs, fundraising efforts, and community events, they help ensure every acre continues to thrive.

This summer, they’re partnering with the West Park Civic Association to present a free five-week Yoga in the Park series at West Park, featuring meditation, a sound bath, and refreshments. It’s pet-friendly, family-friendly, and open to all skill levels. The series concludes with a Wellness Festival on Sunday, August 17.

Let’s 'Fest!

THERE’S SOMETHING MAGICAL ABOUT BETHLEHEM when Musikfest rolls around. From July 31 to August 10, the city transforms into a celebration of music, art, and culture. Drawing more than a million attendees each year, Musikfest is the nation’s largest free music festival, packed with live performances, endless food options, and an electric energy found nowhere else.

Lace up those dancing shoes—this year’s Wind Creek Steel Stage at PNC Plaza features a legendary lineup of headliners including Riley Green, Darius Rucker, Chicago, Nelly, The Avett Brothers, Third Eye Blind, and more. Beyond the ticketed shows, Musikfest boasts over 500 free performances across 15 stages, featuring acts like MKTO, Augustana, and Nine Days. With something for every genre and generation, it’s a diverse lineup to satisfy all music lovers.

Even the poster is a work of art. This year’s official festival poster was created by ArtsQuest Teaching Artist Mallory Zondag. For the first time in Musikfest’s 41-year history, the piece was made entirely using fiber techniques like wet felting, needle felting, and embroidery. The intricate design depicts Bethlehem landmarks connected through musical roots, symbolizing the way music brings people together.

No trip to Musikfest is complete without indulging in iconic festival foods and local delicacies. From classic favorites like “Aw Shucks” Roasted Corn and Take-A-Taco to new gourmet food trucks, Musikfest ensures every attendee’s palate is satisfied. Local brews and wines are also available throughout the festival grounds.

Musikfest 2025 promises an exciting blend of music, art, and community spirit. Whether dancing to chart-topping hits, exploring art installations and vendors, or savoring delicious bites, there’s something for everyone. For the full lineup, schedule, and festival details, visit musikfest.org.
