WELCOME TO THE SUMMER 2025 ISSUE OF FIG, cheerfully titled “Sunny Days.” In this issue, we will raise a glass to the nostalgia of summers past, drawing from days that moved a little slower and where cocktail hours lingered a little longer. We hope to inspire you to enjoy the season locally as you soak up every minute of summer sun—discovering new places to gather, new flavors to taste, and even more reasons to love Lancaster City.

Speaking of food, how lucky are we to call Lancaster home? Nationallyacclaimed for our local growers, lush farmland, and artisan producers, we now have chefs from around the world who bring their talents to our restaurants, homes, and events. Meet them in this issue and taste your way through the city using our annual Lancaster City Restaurant Guide, where you can check off 150+ restaurants and cafes across the city all year long.

And for those of you who love to dine al fresco, we’ve noted outdoor dining spots —many of which are dog-friendly. Thank you to our partners who made this year’s guide possible: Discover Lancaster, City of Lancaster, Willow Valley Communities, and Barley Snyder.

Is it cocktail hour yet? We’re ready. Our friends at RNDC helped us shake and stir up a special section dedicated to the bartenders of Lancaster and their creative summer libations. Try all eight signature cocktails while catching happy hour specials across the city. Find the delicious details starting on page 65.

As we near our 20 th anniversary of Fig, we continually raise a glass to this remarkable community. Thank you for believing in the power of connecting with local businesses, engaging in our city, and loving where you live. We truly are stronger together.

Fresh Face: Lovi Boutique

LOCATED ON THE 300 BLOCK OF NORTH QUEEN STREET, Lovi is a luxury fashion experience with a more manageable price tag. The boutique is named after its owners, Emmalyn Love and Vivi Kendall—business partners and great friends who met over a shared love of fashion in 2015.

Emmalyn and Vivi are both female founders and working moms who love dressing well. They know firsthand how difficult it can be for women to prioritize fashion they feel good about, particularly in busy seasons of life like raising kids, building a business, or managing both at the same time.

“A lot of women don’t know what to wear on a day-to-day basis,” Emmalyn said. “When you feel good in your outfit, you feel confident.”

Beginning as an online-only business, Lovi stocks classic pieces that pair well with the other items in your closet to make getting dressed easier. They are excited to curate more of an experience for their customers.

They believe the perfect outfit is built around things each woman feels good wearing, whether someone is drawn to a laid-back pair of jeans or a structured blazer, so they are excited to walk women through that process at their shop.

“We want to cultivate wardrobes for people so they don’t have to think about it,” Vivi shared. “We want to make getting dressed easy and fun.”

At Lovi, Emmalyn and Vivi make sure the whole woman is seen, valued, and welcomed. Ultimately, they believe true style starts with knowing what makes you feel beautiful and wearing it with confidence. Find the style that suits you at Lovi.

New van, SAME DUDES

SINCE SUMMER 1987, Two Dudes Painting Company’s orange ’79 Volkswagen Bus has been a symbol of quality across Lancaster. Thirty-eight years later, they’ve added an all-electric VW van to the fleet—proof of their commitment to a greener, brighter future. Rest assured, those classic buses aren’t going anywhere. This summer, both vintage and electric vans will carry 90 + expert Dudes as they paint the town.

What’s cooking?

SPARK IMAGINATIONS and create hours of joyful play with this delightful kitchen set from BellaBoo. A visit to the Lancaster City children’s boutique is like stepping into a storybook—where little ones discover magic in every corner, and grown-ups find a beautifully curated collection of toys, clothing, gear, and thoughtful gifts.

Come explore the magic in-store or online—playtime has never looked so charming.

Fresh Face: Gallery Grow

WITH A BRAND-NEW SPACE on the 300 Block of North Queen Street, Lancaster City’s destination for plant people is growing something new.

In the five years since Gallery Grow’s opening, owner Kendra Pepe and her team have created a space for folks to get their hands dirty building terrariums—miniature glass gardens that are home to soil, stones, small plants, and embellishments of each gardener’s choice.

When you walk into the houseplant boutique, customers are invited into a lush retail space with shelves of plants, succulents, gardening tools, and home decor.

Gallery Grow’s signature terrarium bar is now tucked away in a gorgeous upper-level loft with space for up to 40 people to craft a living project. From bridal parties to corporate groups, Gallery Grow offers private and semi-private rentals for groups of all sizes.

“We really want to do more team building events and now have the

space and capacity to,” Kendra shared. “We’re really excited to grow the events side of the space.”

You don’t need to have a green thumb or years of gardening experience to find something beautiful at Gallery Grow. Kendra has assembled a team of friendly planters who are ready to offer tips and tricks for starting a home garden of your own.

“There are plants that will tolerate no natural light, plants that will thrive in bright all-day light, and plants for people who over-tend,” Kendra said. “There is a plant for everybody. It’s just figuring out what your plant parenting style is and what your space allows you to have.”

Gallery Grow invites you to book a terrarium bar reservation in the dynamic new upstairs space, where you can elevate your experience by bringing a bottle of wine and a selection of local charcuterie while you plant. You can also stop in anytime to make a terrarium or shop the retail space and pick out the perfect plant to take home.

Fresh Face: People & Things

MICHAEL AND ABIGAIL STURDIVANT have dreamed of opening a secondhand clothing store for nearly a decade.

Although they both pursued corporate careers after they met in college, their entrepreneurial spirit has grown steadily over the years, and after relocating to Lancaster in January 2024 to be closer to Abigail’s family, they decided it was now or never.

People & Things opened in the heart of Lancaster City in March 2025, with a curated selection of modern pre-loved clothes, shoes, and accessories.

“We’ve always been into fashion and believe you can see people authentically in the way they express themselves through their clothing,” Michael said.

Abigail’s background in fashion merchandising has given her an eye for brands and styles people want to wear and that last, while Michael’s work in consulting and strategic development allows him to take on the business side of their new venture.

“We’re both really passionate about helping people build their wardrobes and find brands they love at an affordable price,” Abigail said. “And we want to give people alternatives to fast fashion and keep clothes that still have a lot of life in them out of the landfills.”

Inspired by their own desire for connection, Michael and Abigail are turning their Prince Street space into more than just a retail store—the ‘people’ part of their name speaks to their vision for creating a dynamic third space for the community to gather.

“‘Come for the things, stay for the people’ is our tagline,” Michael explained.

From Sunday DJs to Sip & Shops to artist pop-ups, People & Things has already created a buzz in the Lancaster community. And with 200 new items on their racks every week, you can elevate your wardrobe and meet some cool folks all at the same time.

Find them on the second floor of 17 North Prince Street.

Fresh Face: Keel Salon

KEEL SALON is a veteran-owned hair salon providing laid-back luxury haircare in Lancaster City. A nod to owner Lauren’s experience in the Navy, the salon’s name is inspired by a keel—the backbone of a ship that provides structure, balance, and support.

“I want to be that to the community,” Lauren said. “I want to be a safe and comfortable space for clients, and a place for stylists to grow.”

The salon is a product of Lauren’s determination to find a new path after finishing her military service.

“I was a single mom when I left the Navy, and I didn’t really know what to do next so I did that personality test they give you in high school,” Lauren said, remembering how cosmetology was listed as one of the recommended career options. “I fell in love with the science of it, and then there is the artistry of it too. But the science really drew me in.”

At Keel Salon, Lauren brings her understanding of the art of hair care and the techniques she’s mastered to enhance her clients’ natural beauty.

“People need to feel beautiful for themselves, and I don’t think a cosmetic service should be what creates that for them,” Lauren said. “I want you to feel beautiful because of the connection and the conversation we had and because of your own doing.”

Specializing in low-maintenance hair care and lived-in styling, Keel Salon is redefining what luxury means in the beauty space.

“It’s not about how much money you spent on this service—it’s about what it gives you,” Lauren shared. “You can feel luxurious just by getting a good shampoo. You can feel luxurious just from getting a good blowout. You can be luxurious from just being told it’s okay to not be okay.”

Fresh Face: South County Brewing Co.

SOUTH COUNTY BREWING CO. has opened a new destination for beer and barbecue lovers in Lancaster City at the historic Steinman Hardware building on West King Street.

The growth of South County Brewing is a testament to the passionate people who invested everything into making an excellent product. Founded by JR and Jen Heaps in 2011, Sam and Kellee Terroso stepped into ownership with the Heaps in 2019 when the brand was at a crossroads. Under their combined leadership, South County Brewing expanded—elevating its flagship operation in York to greatly expand its beer, cocktail, and scratch kitchen programs.

“We know what we’re bringing to Lancaster because of our consistency both in the tanks and in the kitchen,” Sam said, noting the brewery scaled its production from 1,500 to 15,000 barrels of beer capacity with precision. “Lancaster City definitely has a happening beer and culinary scene, and we will be very complementary to the energy that’s already here in the city. We’re looking forward to building on what we established in York for a larger demographic that has always been supportive of the brand. It is a great opportunity in a very vibrant market.”

As the visionary behind the new location’s aesthetic, Kellee wanted to bring an elevated rustic feel to the longstanding restaurant venue, with custom wrought-iron chandeliers, comfortable lounge areas, spacious custom communal tables for large gatherings, and a private event space.

With a total of 30 taps spread across the restaurant’s three distinct bar concepts—the main bar, a speakeasy (King’s Hideaway), and the Steinman Park bar—guests can sample their most popular brews and a rotation of seasonal specialties, alongside a slice of wood-fired pizza, smoked barbecue platter, and a wide array of handhelds and entrees.

“We are proud to join the well-celebrated Lancaster City restaurant scene. We could not be more excited to bring our house barbecue and other proven favorites to this beautiful location,” Kellee said. “We certainly look forward to adding the South County experience to an iconic space in Lancaster City.”

Stop by for Happy Hour to enjoy a sampling of brews and bites or reserve a table at southcountybrewing.com. Open Tuesday through Sunday starting at 11 am

AT BAD GARDEN KITCHEN , Lancaster-natives Dean and Kirstie Roark are serving plant-based dishes worth indulging in.

After living in Seattle for several years and making plans to move back home, Dean began developing a fast-casual restaurant concept that would make mouthwatering plant-based bites convenient for their hometown community.

Recognizing a growing demand for intentional, plant-forward food in the area, Dean began crafting the menu for Bad Garden Kitchen using meat alternatives and whole food options including a mushroom quinoa patty made in-house— transforming familiar dishes with plant-based alternatives. The Roarks find that a great way to introduce more people to plant-based eating is to mimic flavors they’re familiar with, which is why they chose American comfort foods.

“We wanted to stick to a simple menu—burgers, hot dogs, fried chicken sandwiches,” Dean said. “We knew the food had to be great to reach the community.”

In addition to its savory options, Bad Garden Kitchen serves a soft-serve plant-based ice cream and milkshakes that substitute

potato starch and pea protein for traditional dairy, as well as vegan whoopie pies made by My Vegan Baker.

Dean works alongside his brother Alex, who helps to manage the restaurant. Both Dean and Alex as well as the tight-knit staff are proud to prep and serve each dish. The Roarks hope to make a broader impact on the community as they share what they’ve learned about health, sustainability, and animal welfare through their business.

“There’s all these different paths that can lead people to a plant-based diet,” Dean said. “We’re making it more accessible and giving people another option.”

Whether you’re vegan or just want a taste of what they’re serving up, find plant-based bites at Bad Garden Kitchen from 11 am -8 pm daily.

Fresh Face: The Pop Shop

FOLLOWING THE SUCCESS of The Snack Stand’s Lancaster City debut in late 2023, owner Marcie Natale has opened another experiential retail concept right next door on North Queen Street. The idea for The Pop Shop was born from something Marcie and her team value deeply— customer feedback.

“It was almost the first day we opened Snack Stand, people asked if we planned on carrying international beverages too,” Marcie shared. “We didn’t really have the space at the time, but an opportunity presented itself when the shop beside us opened up.”

Officially opening in late March 2025, The Pop Shop is an extension of Marcie’s dream of bringing international flavors to the Lancaster community, as well as her longstanding vision to inspire locals and visitors to come downtown for unique experiences.

From more recognizable products like Dr. Pepper made with real cane sugar to eye-catching option like a Potions Cauldron magical drink for the more adventurous palate, Pop Shop customers can discover a world of exciting canned and bottled beverages lining vibrant shelves—and then head next door to pair them with snacks curated by Marcie’s team.

Manager Julie Bowers worked alongside Marcie to open both ventures. “My favorite thing about opening The Snack Stand is the nostalgia it brings people—the joy they talk about when they see snacks from their home country or their travels,” Julie shared. “The Pop Shop is as much of an intentional business idea as it is a cool response to our customers’ enthusiasm.”

Now with five total Lancaster City small businesses, Marcie is truly a fixture in the local retail community. Along with Snack Stand and Pop Shop, she also has the BeadWorks, The Gem Den, and The PotteryWorks, which all have the same seven-days-aweek hours so people know what to expect.

“Retail has its challenges,” she said. “We have really tried to create spaces that inspire adventure and give people a different experience than they could ordering something online.”

“It’s a long-term investment, and we plan on staying here,” Marcie added. “It takes time to build loyalty and consistency, but we are grateful to help drive traffic in Lancaster City for our businesses and for other businesses near us too so we can thrive together.”

FINDING HER VOICE:

Lana Ryder

BORN TO A MUSICIAN mother, music was Lana Ryder’s first love. And through young motherhood, marriage, and years spent working in allopathic and holistic medicine, music remained a constant in Lana’s story.

“We know music can move us in ways that just talking does not. It’s built within us. It’s innate to us,” Lana mused.

During her first experience with sound many years ago, Lana’s professional background and spiritual seeking collided to create the foundation for Soundwise Health Associates—a holistic wellness center that harnesses sound for therapeutic means.

Now having spent decades studying, practicing, and learning from experts, Lana leads the sound community in Lancaster with the knowledge she’s gained over a lifetime of work.

“We’re here to learn how to love. We don’t need to look outside of ourselves to find it, but we do need to clear away a lot of the obstacles that keep us from finding it,” Lana shared. “If we can reach people with sound, voice, and music to heal and to have their own inner peace, then we can help work with one another despite our differences.”

With Soundwise, Lana leads meditations at corporate events, partners with local

healthcare organizations to introduce therapeutic sound into dementia and cancer support groups, presents sound therapy at regional universities, and guides students through The Soundwise School of Harmonic Therapy, a seven-month intensive for sound practitioners.

With each offering, Lana is cementing sound’s place as a beneficial modality in healthcare, especially during times of great societal change. Learn more about Lana’s offerings at soundwisehealth.com.

JENNIFER WEST
Executive Director of Girls on the Run

REACH HIGH

A series brought to you by High Foundation that introduces business and nonprofit leaders who are thoughtfully innovating with a spirit of servant leadership.

Jennifer West is a Lancaster County native, although like others, her story includes many chapters before her homecoming in 1998.

Her early career dreams took her south after college, where she worked as a broadcast journalist in Georgia before meeting her husband and joining him on four military assignments across the country and even to South Korea.

It was there Jennifer discovered that her love of communications translated well to a role as an ESL teacher, and a newfound passion for education was born.

When the Wests moved back stateside to start a family in Lancaster, Jennifer dug in deeper to this new path, first working at a childcare center before going back to school for her teaching certification.

Her story came to another crossroads in 2008, when amidst her first teaching job offer, Jennifer was also given the opportunity to join a close friend in the founding of a brandnew council of Girls on the Run (GOTR)—an international character development program that combines physical activity and tailored curriculum to empower 3 rd through 8 th grade girls to build confidence and relationships.

“I chose Girls on the Run, and I’ve never looked back,” she said.

As Program Director, Jennifer spent 14 years collaborating with host schools, coaches, and volunteers to establish a strong foundation for the organization—which now has 600 coaches serving nearly 1,850 girls each year in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

In 2021, after several years of exponential growth and creative pivots during the pandemic, Jennifer’s founding partner transitioned out of the organization, and Jennifer worked

“I’ve learned there’s no shame in asking questions or asking for help.”

alongside an Interim Executive Director to refine systems and set the organization up for its next chapter.

Two years later, the Board came to Jennifer with the opportunity to step into the Executive Director role and encouraged her to embrace the capable leader she had become.

Jennifer’s courage to step into this role had a catalytic effect on her team, as many of her colleagues also took on new positions as a result of her shift—using the empowering lessons from the GOTR program as inspiration.

“We very much supported each other moving up,” she shared. “And what I’ve learned is there’s no shame in asking questions or asking for help. I think the key to being a leader is surrounding yourself with people who can help you with the answers and truly want to lift each other up.”

Although her role in the organization looks different today than in 2008, Jennifer says she is just as fulfilled by the impact GOTR makes in this community as she was that first day.

“As I near two years in the Executive Director role, our team continues to keep the girls as the guiding star through all of the learning and transition,” Jennifer shared.

THINK ABOUT IT:

WASTE-TO-ENERGY FOR A CLEANER, BRIGHTER TOMORROW

HAVE YOU EVER STOPPED to think about what happens to your trash after it leaves the curb? Through LCSWMA’s Think About It campaign, they’re encouraging our community to consider the journey of waste—and how Lancaster County turns it into something valuable through waste-to-energy (WTE).

At the Lancaster Waste-to-Energy Facility, everyday trash becomes a powerful resource. After recyclables and hazardous materials are removed, the remaining waste is combusted at high temperatures to create steam, which powers a turbine and generates electricity. This process can generate enough energy to power over 25,000 homes and businesses—and provides steam to Perdue AgriBusiness, reducing the need for fossil fuels.

Janine James, LCSWMA’s Public Relations Manager
@LCSWMAPA

WASTE-TO-ENERGY REDUCES LANDFILL VOLUME BY

%

But the benefits don’t stop there. WTE reduces landfill volume by 90%, cuts harmful methane emissions, and allows for the recovery of thousands of tons of metal each year. Without this process, Lancaster County would have needed two additional landfills by now.

LCSWMA’s system is a model of environmental stewardship, innovation, and sustainability. It’s more than just trash—it’s a resource.

Land Benefits | Without WTE, the original Frey Farm Landfill capacity would have been full in 2002. With WTE and Vertical Expansion, they’re able to increase the capacity by more than 30 years.

Water Benefits | The Lancaster WTE Facility uses wastewater from the Elizabethtown Wastewater Treatment Plant and upgrades it onsite for its boilers and process water needs. They beneficially treat and use it in a closed-loop, zero-discharge system to create renewable energy from our community’s waste.

Metal Benefits | The Waste-to-Energy (WTE) facilities in Lancaster and Harrisburg recover more than 14,000 tons of ferrous and non-ferrous metals each year for recycling, resulting in numerous environmental benefits.

Electric Benefits | Waste-to-Energy helps bolster electric grid reliability in our community by providing 24/7 baseload renewable power to the local grid.

GHG Benefits | For every 1 ton of waste processed via WTE, 2.4 tons of greenhouse gas emissions are reduced compared to landfilling.

A Campus for the Community

Armstrong World Industries’ Lancaster Campus Celebrates 75 Years of Community Connection

AS ARMSTRONG WORLD INDUSTRIES’ Lancaster campus celebrates its 75th anniversary, it continues to stand as a symbol of innovation, collaboration and community spirit. For three-quarters of a century, the campus has not only been a center of industry excellence—it has also served as a welcoming space where the local community can gather, learn and grow together. That legacy was on full display in a series of recent events that brought together students, professionals and community partners. The Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Architecture Club hosted an Employer

Town Hall on campus, offering students meaningful engagement with industry professionals. “Armstrong’s thoughtfully designed campus spaces provided an inspiring and welcoming environment for the TSCT Architecture Club’s event, helping grow meaningful connections between our students and industry leaders,” said Tedd Williams, Assistant Professor at the College.

In celebration of Earth Day, Armstrong hosted guest speakers from the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority and DECA City Farms. These sessions focused on sustainability, waste reduction, and the

future of urban agriculture—topics that reflect Armstrong’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Additionally, Armstrong proudly hosted the Lancaster Chamber’s Professional Women’s Forum, providing a space for women across industries to connect, share experiences, and support one another in professional growth. The forum underscored the campus’s ongoing dedication to empowering individuals and fostering inclusive leadership across the community. These events are just the latest examples of how the Lancaster campus continues to evolve as a true “campus for the community.” As Armstrong celebrates the milestone of 75 years, they remain deeply rooted in the values that shaped their history while continuing to build meaningful connections that shape the future.

MEET RYLEY | 2025 SCHREIBER AMBASSADOR

Born with Pfeiffer syndrome, 11-year-old Ryley is working on building independence through occupational therapy. With the guidance of her occupational therapist, Lauren, activities like planting flowers are carefully designed to build real-world skills. Gardening is a powerful therapeutic tool for Ryley as it helps strengthen her fine motor skills, supports sensory regulation, encourages future planning, and helps her follow multi-step directions, all in a way that feels playful and engaging. Digging into the soil, grasping tools, and arranging each bloom with care help reinforce motions she’ll use in daily self-care tasks, like brushing her hair, tying her shoes, or preparing a summer snack. For kids like Ryley, therapy is personalized, purposeful, and built to help them grow their confidence, abilities, and everyday independence.

SINCE 1936, the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development has been a source of hope and possibilities for children with disabilities, developmental delays, and acquired injuries.
