A note from Fig
IN A WORLD THAT’S OFTEN MOVING VERY QUICKLY, this issue of Fig Lehigh Valley invites you to press pause, unplug, and rediscover the simple joys of living intentionally.
We’re celebrating a slower pace, mindful moments, and the places that inspire us to take a breath, look around, and fully appreciate the community we call home.
Within these pages, you’ll find inspiration to reconnect—with friends, with yourself, and with the beauty surrounding us. Picture a cozy lunch at Quadrant Book Mart & Coffee House, a Saturday stroll through Laura Brady Gallery where creativity blooms, or an afternoon of well-deserved self-care at Unique Glow Wellness & Medspa.
We’re also spotlighting Happy Places in Lehigh Valley that bring joy and connection to our lives: a fresh cut or
color at American Hairlines, family fun at LV Sports Turf, an unforgettable dining experience at ZEST bar+grille, and bold flavors at Mister Lee’s Noodles. Each of these businesses—and the people behind them—makes our community not only unique but also deeply connected.
As you explore this issue, I hope it inspires you to slow down and appreciate the little things that bring meaning to our days: a good meal, a conversation with a friend, the beauty of art, or the serenity found in wellness. These moments remind us of the richness of life in Lehigh Valley and the importance of savoring them fully.
Let’s embrace this season of intentionality and connection together.
Here’s to slowing down, Ashley Russo
SPRING IS HERE, and as manager of St. Luke’s Career Navigation, Andrea Reger is already preparing for summer. Andrea has helped to expand the Network’s summer internship program, increasing the number of non-clinical paid internships and participating departments.
“Internships are a pipeline of talent into the Network,” she said. “Often, interns come back as full-time employees or serve as brand ambassadors on their campuses, talking about their positive experience at St. Luke’s.”
The program is one of many initiatives to recruit and retain talented and engaged employees for St. Luke’s.
In 2024, interns worked in many departments, including HR, IT, Learning and Development, Community Health, Marketing, and Materials Management. Some interns supported administrative projects in clinical departments, such as Behavioral Health and Outpatient Rehabilitation.
Andrea recruits from colleges nationwide and uses Handshake, an online career management tool, to market internships. She attends career fairs and visits local universities to spread the word, which has resulted in a more competitive internship program.
Sadie Kennedy, a senior majoring in film and TV at Boston University, worked on St. Luke’s Media Production Services team. Considering a career in film editing, she welcomed the opportunity to edit digital footage and create videos used in social media posts and on St. Luke’s website, including the Find a Doctor videos. She will add the videos to her portfolio, showing her capabilities.
“I’m much more comfortable making the video on my own due to the experience I gained at St. Luke’s,” she said. “My internship has taught me how to set up lighting, use the camera, and maintain on-set etiquette. It was a very good experience.”
Rory O’Connor, a Lehigh University Business Information Systems senior, worked in the Supply Chain Department on Project Nexus, a PAR (periodic automation replenishment) inventory management initiative to optimize items kept in stock.
“We are trying to right size our PARs, and I was in charge of creating a standardized process at each campus,” he said. “My project isn’t finished yet, but we are expecting $100,000 of savings or more.”
In addition to working in their departments, interns receive skillsbuilding workshops, networking events, lunch-and-learn sessions, one-to-one career coaching, and social activities.
Andrea believes that when interns get a chance to experience St. Luke’s culture, they will also choose to stay and continue their careers in the Network.
“Internships are a powerful tool to attract the next generation of health care professionals,” Andrea said.

CHEFS LEE CHIZMAR AND JOSÉ NERO
CHAVES set the bar high for inventive dining in Bethlehem. Their culinary team at Mister Lee’s Noodles has been crafting Japanese-style farm-toladle ramen since 2021, with appetizers, entrées, and desserts that evolve with each season’s bounty of locally sourced ingredients.
This spring, expect a menu bursting with vibrant colors and bold flavors. The Chilled Asparagus Ramen highlights delicate, earthy undertones with crisp tempura asparagus and a soy-marinated egg in a chilled dashi broth. The Chilled Beet Ramen with Crispy Pork Belly balances richness and tang with golden beets, confit potatoes, and a horseradish-dill crème fraîche. The Pastramen is a bold fusion of Japanese & New York deli flavors with crisp pastrami and Tokyo noodles. The Confit Duck Dumplings are packed with umami and plated to perfection. For dessert, the Persian Love Cake is a standout—floral, indulgent, and topped with lychee honey ice cream.
No visit is complete without a show-stopping cocktail. Mister Lee’s Mixologist & Beverage Director Stephen Pekarik curates an elevated drink menu designed to harmonize with the flavors of the kitchen. Each cocktail is a masterful balance of fruit-forward flavors and subtle notes, combining rich profiles such as plum, passionfruit, lychee, and pineapple with quieter ingredients such as elderflower, honey, and lemon to bring out the “spirits” of each creation.
Fresh, unexpected, and unforgettable—Mister Lee’s is setting the tone for spring in the SouthSide.
I always tell our clients that this space is a blank canvas and we can set it up however they prefer. Our clients are always so pleased with their events in this area! My husband and I will be hosting our baby shower here since I know how great the space and quality of food are.”
— Jacque Krawitz, Events Manager
WITH SLEEK STYLE, bold flavors, and a skyline view that stuns, ZEST bar+grille isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a vibe. Overlooking Bethlehem’s iconic SteelStacks, this cosmopolitan hotspot blends elevated American cuisine with an upscale atmosphere, making it the go-to destination for weekend toasts and unforgettable celebrations.

Their Bridgeview Room offers a refined and intimate setting for up to 25 guests, while the moodier Steelview Room accommodates larger gatherings of up to 40. The semi-private Corner Lounge guarantees a lively atmosphere for up to 65 people. Saturday afternoon events offer exclusive venue access before dinner service, making them perfect for weddings, vow renewals, birthdays, and more.
ZEST’s Espresso Martini Tree is a must-try for brunch lovers of the Valley, featuring a trio of expertly crafted martinis—Traditional Espresso, Salted Caramel, and Orange Lavender—alongside indulgent appetizers that balance bold tastes with familiar comforts. Their commitment to elegant dining doesn’t stop at brunch. The expertly curated dinner menu and seasonal spring offerings bring sophisticated dishes to the table, making every meal—morning, noon, or night—an experience
FOOD BANK are the heart of Community Action Lehigh Valley. Their dedication and hard work behind the scenes often go unnoticed by the general public, but without them, food bank programming and local pantries would come to a standstill. From receiving and sorting food donations to managing inventory and ensuring food safety, they are the backbone of the distribution process, contributing to the more than 13 million meals served across their six-county region last year.
Warehouse work is physically demanding— early mornings, all-weather conditions, and managing peak seasons. Yet, these workers approach their tasks with determination and a deep sense of purpose, knowing their efforts keep nutritious food flowing to those in need. Their resilience—both physical and mental—is matched only by their compassion and commitment to efficiency. By keeping the warehouse well-organized, they maximize the food bank’s capacity to serve the community.
Their attention to detail ensures that every food item is properly handled, stored, and distributed safely. Without their careful oversight, vital resources would be lost, and fewer families would receive the support they need. Their efforts provide nourishment while also restoring hope and dignity to those facing food insecurity.
These warehouse workers and drivers embody the spirit of service. As Second Harvest Food Bank recognizes their contributions, they aim to inspire greater appreciation and support for these unsung heroes whose work is essential in the fight against hunger.

IMAGINE A PLACE where creativity flows freely across mediums, where color and design are met with expression and education, and where the arts are accessible to everyone, regardless of financial status. This vision will soon become a reality with the expansion of the brand new ArtsQuest Creative Factory powered by PPL on Bethlehem’s SouthSide.
Set to open in late 2026, the ArtsQuest Creative Factory revitalizes the much-loved Banana Factory, long a cultural anchor and gateway to Bethlehem’s SouthSide Arts District. While the Banana Factory has been home to ArtsQuest’s visual arts and education programming since 1998, it has outgrown its capacity while simultaneously becoming in need of overwhelmingly expensive repairs that would be cost-prohibitive to the nonprofit’s mission. The new facility will honor its legacy by expanding offerings
and providing more opportunities for creativity and community engagement.
This project is made possible by ArtsQuest’s Re-Imagine That! Capital Campaign and the long-standing partnership between ArtsQuest and the PPL Foundation. Their shared vision of vibrant, inclusive communities comes to life in this state-of-the-art facility designed to foster innovation in the visual and performing arts and provide accessible arts experiences for all.
Standing five stories high with 78,500 square feet of space, the ArtsQuest Creative Factory will offer expanded arts-based programming for all ages. Featuring comedic performances, interactive workshops, and dedicated meeting spaces, the facility will serve as a dynamic gathering place. A brandnew 5,500-square-foot glass studio will offer an inspiring place to create, while resident artists will gain 20% more studio space. With increased capacity
for year-round programs and camps, the facility will also provide expanded opportunities for the community to get involved free of charge and will enhance accessibility, including the addition of bilingual wayfinding throughout the building.
This project exemplifies the power of collaboration. With partners like the Bethlehem Area School District, Air Products, Martin Guitar, and many more, the ArtsQuest Creative Factory will provide guests with the tools, space, and inspiration to challenge their creativity and explore new artistic avenues.
For those eager to learn a new skill, create, or simply unplug, the ArtsQuest Creative Factory powered by PPL will soon become Lehigh Valley's premier destination for creative expression. Visit reimaginethat.artsquest.org for exclusive updates and to support this transformative capital campaign.

PIPER RESNIKOFF from Perkasie
was the picture of joy in June, proudly riding her bike the day after her ninth birthday, a birthday doubly special because it was also the last day of school. Then, something usually uneventful happened. Piper fell off the bike.
Her parents, Evan Resnikoff (Chief of Operations for Newtown Emergency Medical Services) and Rebecca Deucher (a psychiatric nurse practitioner), immediately recognized that Piper’s right arm didn’t look normal and knew she needed to be taken to an emergency room.
They chose St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus in Quakertown and are extremely glad they did. By the next day, they were at St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital in Bethlehem, where St. Luke’s helps kids—and their parents— feel better.
“We had a bad experience at another area ER, and we knew St. Luke’s was a good health system,” Evan said. “She was diagnosed with a Grade 3 fracture of the humerus.”
Dustin Greenhill, MD, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, saw Piper during clinical rounds at St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital the very next day and he used
X-rays to confirm a fracture at the top of the elbow—specifically a supracondylar humerus fracture.
Dr. Greenhill said that most pediatric fractures will heal well on their own if managed properly, but “this area of the body does not straighten itself out very well.”
He performed an incisionless surgery and placed pins to keep the fractured bone straight so it could heal properly. During the surgery, Dr. Greenhill discovered that the fracture was a Grade 4—the most severe—which can normally only be diagnosed during surgery.
“I really liked Dr. Greenhill,” Piper said. “We went in to find out if we were going to get a cast or not, and I liked how honest he was.”
At St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital, every child is treated by someone trained in pediatrics—the doctors, nurses, and anesthesiologists—through every stage of a procedure, from preparation and surgery through recovery.
Evan Resnikoff said that they were hoping to see Dr. Greenhill from the get-go.
“Some parent groups we are in highly recommended Dr. Greenhill,” Evan said. “We were really pleased with all the care,
the nurses, and the entire team. It’s been such a wonderful experience at St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital, and Dr. Greenhill is a down-to-earth guy, which everyone had told us. The entire team was great with the kids and parents. They explained everything in detail and made what we feel were great recommendations.”
He also praised the St. Luke’s Upper Bucks emergency room. “We were in and out in two hours, and you don’t find that anywhere,” he said.
Piper’s mom, Rebecca, was so impressed that she shared a heartfelt shoutout on social media along with a photo of Piper in front of St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital: “This strong girl just finished four weeks in a cast after surgery and is doing amazing! Today, the cast came off and the pins were removed. The skill and care of the staff at St. Luke’s University Hospital in Bethlehem and Dr. Greenhill were nothing short of amazing. Piper is ready to ride bikes and climb more trees.”
In a thank-you email, Evan wrote: “We’ve really appreciated Dr. Greenhill and all of the staff here. It makes me want to work here. The care is far and above anywhere I’ve either worked or had to interact with. Everyone from registrations to anesthesia has been amazing.”

A COMMUNITY IS A RICH TAPESTRY, woven together by individuals from all walks of life, each contributing to a greater whole. This fabric is strengthened by advocates and leaders who drive positive change, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Dr. Hasshan Batts is one such community champion, deeply involved in multiple facets of the Lehigh Valley. As a leader, public speaker, and community development consultant, his work is united by one powerful thread: empowering the voices that often go unheard.
Hasshan truly embodies the mantra, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” He has taken the struggles and challenges of his past and turned them into a source of inspiration, using them to drive and lead change in the community around him. As a father, husband, and grandfather, he is committed to leaving a legacy of positive transformation.
“I didn’t have someone like me to look up to when I was growing up,” Hasshan reflected. “My gift to my people and my community is to create leaders others can look up to.”
Hasshan’s mentorship centers on the recognition that equitable opportunities are often limited. By building relationships and educating the public, he helps dismantle the barriers that hinder progress, ensuring that organizations and systems can create lasting, positive change.
His work spans education, healthcare, and government sectors, giving him a unique perspective on how to bridge gaps and connect people to the resources they need. As a trusted community ambassador, Hasshan listens to his neighbors’ needs and channels support in impactful ways—whether guiding funding to the right initiatives or educating CEOs on their corporate responsibility to uplift the public.
“The community holds the most intimate solutions, but it is often overlooked,” Hasshan said. “I owe it to the community to leverage my credentials and relationships to make it better.”
Whether he’s engaging in a conversation with an elderly neighbor or advising a CEO, Hasshan remains steadfast in his mission: to spotlight the issues facing the community and empower leaders to pave the way for change.
“My ‘why’ is simple,” he said. “It’s about making the world a better place and believing in people’s ability to do and be their best. Systems are made up of people, and when they have the tools, access, and opportunity, they will thrive.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Hasshan Batts is eager to expand his influence on a global scale through his writing and teachings. He hopes to inspire a new generation of leaders to carry forward the work he’s started—creating a ripple effect of positive change that will echo far beyond the Lehigh Valley.

FOR LAURA BRADY, each step into her flower garden is a step closer to a new masterpiece. Surrounded by vibrant blooms of zinnias, hydrangeas, and lavender on her farm in New Tripoli, she finds endless inspiration in nature. Every meticulously tended plant serves as both a muse and the starting point for her art, but her creative journey doesn’t end there. That same sense of joy carries into her studio and gallery, a bright, inviting space in The Shops at 3900 Hamilton in Allentown.
Here, her creative process mirrors the growth of her flowers: grounding herself in the earth, planting seeds of color, and adding intricate details to bring each piece to life. Laura is one with nature as she watches her creations blossom on canvas. PERSONAL WELLNESS IS A JOURNEY, and the right support network can make all the difference. Capital Blue Cross has supported communities across Lehigh Valley and beyond for over 80 years. Expanding on this commitment, the first Capital Blue Cross Connect health and wellness center opened in Saucon Valley in 2012, offering an accessible space for individuals to explore their health coverage options and engage in wellness activities.
Today, visitors to the Capital Blue Cross Connect locations in Downtown Allentown and Promenade Saucon Valley can conveniently access free health and wellness services in addition to insurance guidance. Both members and nonmembers can enjoy fitness classes, cooking demonstrations, and community events. The centers also offer nutritional counseling and personalized wellness plans, with health coaches providing expert advice on diabetes management, sleep health, and stress reduction.
“We aim to provide education and access to resources that are often out of reach,” said Michael Crnovic, Director of Retail Services at Capital Blue Cross Connect.
For those unable to visit in person, Capital Blue Cross Connect offers online resources and virtual classes. “We want the community to have access to the tools they need to make informed decisions about their health,” Michael added.
These locations also serve as community hubs, partnering with nonprofits to host events, meetings, and blood drives in support of local causes. “We are committed to providing access to quality care, regardless of income. American Hairlines has been a creative haven where clients leave feeling rejuvenated, empowered, and truly seen. Salon owners Dru Thomas and Dave McCormack have built a reputation not only for their artistry in hair design but also for their deep commitment to the Lehigh Valley. With every cut, color, and consultation, they craft a personalized experience for everyone who walks through their doors.
The story of American Hairlines extends far beyond the beauty chair. Dave recently partnered with St. Luke’s University Health Network to provide customized wig options and services for cancer patients. The emotional toll of hair loss can be profound, especially during cancer treatments. That’s where American Hairlines steps in, offering bespoke wig services that restore appearance and boost self-esteem during a difficult time.
This partnership with St. Luke’s is an exciting expansion of the salon’s existing wig services. Clients receive a private consultation to ensure they feel comfortable and informed in their choice. The team offers a variety of highquality wigs, with real and synthetic hair options tailored to suit the client’s needs.
The installation process is just as thoughtful, with expert styling that transforms the wig into a natural, flawless look.
American Hairlines’ impact transcends individual hair care. In anticipation of the new ArtsQuest Creative Factory, American Hairlines has opened its doors to local artists, offering space for exhibitions and art shows. Outside the salon, American Hairlines will join other industry professionals by participating in the Lehigh Valley Hair Showcase at Wind Creek Event Center on March 30.
American Hairlines proves that true beauty lies in community. This worldclass, award-winning salon is a happy place where everyone is welcomed, valued, and given the confidence to embrace their best self.

SPRING SIGNALS NEW
BEGINNINGS and fresh opportunities to dig into something meaningful. Community gardens are sprouting up all over Lehigh Valley, bringing people together to grow nutritious produce while inspiring pride and connection.
Harvesting fruits, vegetables, and herbs is only part of the fun. These community gardens unite volunteers through a common interest in sustainability, creating spaces where they can get their hands dirty and make a difference. “Volunteers are at the center of community success,” said Karen Smith, CEO of the Volunteer Center. “Everyone has a voice, anyone can advocate for a cause, and anyone can get involved.”
Lehigh Valley’s strong philanthropic spirit shines through its residents and institutions. Colleges like Lehigh University, DeSales University, and Lafayette College, along with organizations such as Lehigh County, Lehigh Valley Health Network, St. Luke’s University Health Network, and The Greater Easton Development Partnership, cultivate community gardens that provide healthy, enriching outlets for employees, students, and residents. With every hand in the soil, these shared spaces offer fresh produce while fostering stronger connections and a sustainable future.
Community gardens are just one example of how deeper connections and more meaningful experiences are made in the Lehigh Valley. From planting seeds to building friendships, the region offers opportunities to grow—in every sense of the word.

AT CAMELOT FOR CHILDREN, magic isn’t just in fairy tales. Celebrating 40 years, this nonprofit has brought joy and magic to families across Lehigh Valley by enriching the lives of children with special needs. Through free, yearround programming, Camelot creates a welcoming home away from home, where children with medical complexities experience the fun and friendships that every childhood deserves. Every highfive, smile, and moment of connection is a testament to the unwavering dedication of the volunteers, buddies, and staff who make it all possible.
Emily Werner, Executive Director and a proud Camelot Mom, understands firsthand how children with special needs often miss out on social experiences due to health concerns. “Kids with unique needs miss out on fun experiences because their health comes first,” Emily explained. “By giving them
the chance to play games, share laughter, and simply be heard, we help them grow beyond their diagnosis into confident individuals.”
Camelot creates a fun, educational environment where every child can thrive. Through field trips, guest speakers, and an enriching summer day camp, children develop problemsolving, communication, and emotional regulation skills in a safe environment with caring mentors. This comprehensive, community-driven approach benefits everyone involved. “We’re not just helping kids—we’re supporting future leaders and engaged citizens of the Lehigh Valley,” Emily shared. “And we do it all at no cost to families through our Buddy model.”
Buddies are a special part of the Camelot experience. These teen volunteers form genuine connections with children,
offering friendship, excitement, and a sense of belonging. The impact goes both ways—buddies develop leadership skills, empathy, and lifelong memories while ensuring that Camelot’s kids have a truly special experience playing games and making memories.
Camelot also supports siblings and provides much-needed respite for parents and caregivers. Whether a child needs a space to feel understood or a family needs a community to lean on, Camelot welcomes them with open arms.
“Camelot is only possible because of the community,” Emily emphasized. “There are so many ways to get involved, and I encourage people to be part of this incredible place.”

that captured global attention with a historic and heartwarming moment at the Paris Olympics last summer is now in the Lehigh Valley. Good Shepherd Rehabilitation is the first clinical user in the United States to utilize this hands-free device to help people with stroke or spinal cord injury to walk.
The Wandercraft Atalante X technology comes to Good Shepherd courtesy of The Fleming Center for Robotics in Rehabilitation, a forward-thinking hub that identifies and tests robotic and wearable technology to further provide leadingedge rehabilitation care and, ultimately, contribute to the future of the field. The Fleming Center launched in November 2023 thanks to a major gift from the Fleming Foundation to Good Shepherd.
“Without the need for crutches or a walker for balance, Atalante allows a more diverse range of movement patterns essential for daily life. Aside from walking, patients can practice everyday activities such as reaching for a cup in a cupboard, setting a dinner table, or even playing a modified game of pickleball,” said Emily Lyter, PT, DPT, administrative director of Good Shepherd Learns and Creates, the team that oversees The Fleming Center at Good Shepherd.
Kevin Oldt, who sustained a spinal cord injury in a snowmobiling accident more than two decades ago, has utilized the technology. “It feels really good to stand,” Kevin said.
For individuals like Kevin, the ability to stand and move again represents a powerful step toward renewed independence.
