Stay Curious, Columbia

Fall has always been my favorite season in Columbia—cooler days bring Carolina football, cozy sweaters, oyster roasts, the South Carolina State Fair, and Oktoberfest Columbia—plus the magic of the holidays just around the corner.

As you turn the pages of our Curious Minds issue of Fig Columbia, I hope you’ll find a trove of creative treasures right here at home. Pick up season tickets for the Columbia City Ballet and Columbia Philharmonic, and don’t miss performances at Town Theatre, Trustus Theatre, and The Nickelodeon. Every seat you fill keeps our arts scene thriving. And when you’re planning a night out, don’t forget the local restaurants and boutiques that elevate the evening with incredible flavor and charm.

If family photos are on your to - do list, book sessions with Columbia’s talented photographers like Joshua Aaron or Stephanie Williams. You’ll have your shots ready in time to create custom holiday

stationery with Columbia Printing and Carolina Letterpress by ByFarr. Finally, don’t skip the feature story in this issue. Our writers, Robin and Katherine, dug up many curious facts and overlooked places that even long - time locals may have forgotten. Give it a read—you might add a new stop to your weekend plans.

Thank you all for supporting the artists who turn their craft into Columbia’s culture. I hope to see you at a gallery opening, a concert, or in the ticket line this season.

With gratitude, BRYNLEY FARR & THE FIG COLUMBIA TEAM

Renovation New Builds DIY Design

There’s an impressive power in Nora Williams’ photography—a stillness that invites viewers to pause, listen, and feel. A Midlands native and graduate student at the University of South Carolina, Williams has built a body of work that captures the heart and complexity of life in the South. Whether documenting protests, family gatherings, or overlooked neighborhoods, her images speak with both urgency and tenderness. Though her work has appeared in The New York Times , The Washington Post , and The Wall Street Journal , it’s her deep roots in Columbia, South Carolina that give her art its soul.

“My first interaction with a camera was through my mom,” Williams recalls. “She used a disposable to capture snapshots of our life.” Her passion sparked when her mother gave her a digital camera in high school. “From there, I took it everywhere.” In college, darkroom classes taught her to slow down and shoot with intention—learning how light, composition, and patience could deepen her storytelling. “Honestly, photography was always around me,” she says. For Williams, Columbia isn’t just a backdrop—it’s an active collaborator. “I feel like Columbia is battling this old South and new South,” she says. “This is a great place to be because there’s so much rich history and so many stories to tell.” Her perspective as a Black woman plays a central role in her work. “I’ve been photographing people who are resilient— families and communities that are often overlooked. I love documenting those stories.”

Her latest series explores queer Southern identity, playing on the idea of “Southern hospitality” while challenging the traditions behind it. Those layered, lived-in stories are Nora’s favorites to capture.

“The hardest work for me is covering protests—those moments can be intense and hard to digest—but they’re important.”

She’s now diving into long-form storytelling, blending photography with video and graphic art. “I want to go deeper in how I tell stories and collaborate with communities,” she explains. Her big upcoming project is Cultural Layers, which documents the legacy of Ward 1—a historically Black neighborhood in downtown Columbia that was displaced by development from the University of South Carolina. Her portraits from that project will become part of a community mural coming soon.

She’s also continuing her work on Black cowboys and cowgirls in the South and expanding her series on Southern queer identity, which she calls her next big focus.

Before each shoot, Williams takes time to breathe and center herself. “I revisit old work to remind myself what I’ve learned and where I want to go,” she explains.

“There’s always this dance—when do I pull out the camera, and when do I just be present?” she reflects. “Some moments are meant to be remembered, others to be witnessed. I trust my gut—if it feels like the camera won’t interrupt something sacred, then I shoot.”

In the ever-evolving story of the South, Nora Williams is a storyteller for a new generation of curious minds—capturing not just what’s seen, but what’s felt. Through her lens, Columbia comes alive with culture, resilience, and a spark of something new.

Follow Nora’s journey on Instagram, @noraw.jpg, and look out for her Cultural Layers project and new work exploring Southern queer identity.

Where design meets craft

At ByFarr, we believe magic lives in the details—and in the machines that make them. Tucked inside our studio, century-old presses breathe life into modern design through time-honored techniques like foiling, letterpress, sculpted embossing, and die cutting. These are more than methods—they’re an art form.

As designers, we don’t just create—we study intricate processes to push the boundaries of what’s possible. When we know how something is made, we design with intention, beauty, and soul. We preserve the past to inspire the future—and we think that’s pretty magical.

CURIO CABINET

With its storied past, rich history, and vibrant arts and culture scene, Columbia is anything but ordinary. From the hundreds of local businesses that form its backbone to the residents who nurture its strong sense of community, Columbia offers endless opportunities for discovery. Around every corner are little wonders, creative works, and unique experiences ready to be found. Whether you’re a longtime local or a curious visitor, there’s always something new to fall in love with here in our home city.

In this issue, we’re inviting readers to open the doors to Columbia’s cabinet of curiosities—little-known facts about the city’s history and culture, curious finds from some of its most beloved institutions, and even an obscure myth or two. Much like a curio cabinet, Columbia is full of oddities and unique treasures just waiting to be uncovered.

CURIOUS LORE

The first textile mill run completely by electricity in the world opened in Columbia in 1894. The last small section still standing of that mill is now part of the South Carolina State Museum.

The Barringer Building on Main Street was South Carolina’s first skyscraper, completed in the year 1903. It now serves as apartments for downtown living! 03.

Over 70 movies have been filmed in Columbia, including Death Sentence (2007) starring Kevin Bacon and The Program (1993) starring James Caan. 05.

Darius Rucker, lead singer of Hootie & The Blowfish, met the rest of the band when they were all Gamecock freshmen at the University of South Carolina. 06. Columbia’s Assembly Street was built surprisingly wide in the 18th century, likely to combat mosquitoes. 02.

Our very own Town Theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places! It was built just over a century ago in 1924, with their 106th season launching this September. 04.

Columbia wasn’t always the capitol of South Carolina. The capitol was previously Charleston in 1776, but then the state legislature moved it to Columbia in 1786 to be central to the state. 07.

The South Carolina State House is built primarily out of blue granite, SC’s official state stone, and is completely fireproof. 08.

The Maxcy Monument in the center of USC’s iconic Horseshoe was designed by none other than Robert Mills, the architect behind the Washington Monument in DC. 09.

R.L. Bryan Company, local publishing and textbook distributor, is South Carolina’s oldest operating business— beginning in 1844. 10.

A childhood home of our 28th President, Woodrow Wilson, is still standing in Columbia. The Museum of the Reconstruction Era at the Woodrow Wilson Family Home is also the only museum dedicated to showcasing the post-Civil War Reconstruction period in the entire country. P.S. Wilson’s parents are buried at First Presbyterian Church on Lady Street!

CURRENT CURIOSITIES

Did you know Columbia is the mustard BBQ capital of the world? We’re at the heart of the “mustard belt,” stretching from Columbia to Charleston, and proudly known for our iconic Carolina Gold mustard BBQ sauce.

The only national park in South Carolina, Congaree National Park is home to the largest trees east of the Mississippi River.

There’s a system of tunnels right beneath our city streets, known as the Columbia Catacombs. It’s theorized that these tunnels connected some of Columbia’s most historic homes like the Robert Mills House, Hampton Preston House, the University of South Carolina, and the State House. Now, these tunnels are used for drainage and maintenance.

Did you know? Soda City is a producer-only market, meaning vendors must make or grow their own products. Not only is Soda City an exceptional hub for chefs, farmers, and artists—it was voted the top farmer’s market in the country in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards!

The catacombs are home to a popular urban legend of their very own: the Third-Eye Man. A staple of USC’s campus lore, this local cryptid is an excellent topic for a research rabbit hole this spooky season!

Our very own Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens is one of ten zoos in the U.S. with a koala exhibit!

Get an up close and personal look into the skies above at the Melton Memorial Observatory, which houses a 16-inch Cassegrain telescope right on USC’s campus!

The Ra Obelisk is a remnant of an old railway trestle that was previously demolished. Painted by Richard Lane in 1993, some of the symbols on the painting can be translated to popular songs by The Beatles. Pay a visit to the Ra Obelisk at 900 Heyward Street.

If you’ve lived around Columbia for any length of time, you’ve probably seen Dog West: avid walker, frequent dancer, and one of the most well-known Soda City citizens amongst our locals. In recent years, he’s been featured in WestMetroNews, ColaDaily, and countless TikToks.

Supporting survivors

“Why does she stay?” It’s a question many have asked about women experiencing intimate partner violence. The truth is there’s no single clearcut answer. Every person is unique, as are their stories of survival. With a new short film, Just Left of Perfect (2025), Sistercare is spotlighting the complex reasons behind why women stay in abusive relationships through the eyes of a fictional character, Kate. Viewers will follow Kate through a typical day of her life, peeking behind a careful veneer of the “perfect” family to see the dangerous and tangled realities that lay underneath.

In 2024:

| Sistercare served 3,881 domestic violence survivors and children.

| 90% of the survivors Sistercare served indicated that their safety outcomes were met.

| 87% of survivors Sistercare served completed goals in the areas of economic and financial empowerment, health, housing, legal, and counseling.

| Sistercare served 400 adults and children in emergency shelter.

| Sistercare responded to 2,922 Crisis Line calls.

Where curiosity turns the page–

and wonder follows.

At Hammond, curiosity is not merely encouraged—it’s cultivated. Their teachers inspire questions, guide discovery, and nurture a lifelong love of learning. From the earliest grades, students are challenged to think ahead, dream big, and step boldly into the future they are already beginning to shape. Hammond believes introductions should be personal. The school also understands that the best way to experience Hammond is in person.

Social Mission Palmetto Place Children and Youth Services

For the past two issues of Fig Columbia , it has been our honor to highlight Palmetto Place Children and Youth Services as our Social Mission for 2025. This remarkable organization provides emergency and transitional housing for teenagers and young adults in South Carolina, meeting their basic needs and beyond as they help at-risk youth build a foundation to lead successful, independent lives. Palmetto Place remains a fixture in many of their residents’ lives for years, even providing an aftercare program as a stepping stone for recent shelter graduates.

This level of hands-on, full-time support is truly a gift for our community, making safety and stability possible for the state’s youth. This fall, Palmetto Place is offering many opportunities for us to give back to this admirable cause and ensure they have the funds to meet Columbia’s needs.

HERO HUSTLE 5K RACE FOR PALMETTO PLACE

On September 13th, join Palmetto Place at the starting location of All Good Books for a 5K race and one-mile fun run. Your registrations will help raise money for their youth services, all the while celebrating the good they bring to the community! Register at strictlyrunning.com/hero.

BOOS

& BREWS

There’s no better way to get in the spooky season spirit than with a Halloween-themed fundraiser at Steel Hands Brewing! Come by one of Columbia’s favorite breweries for an evening

of live music and a Trunk or Treat event for the kids. For every pint purchased, Steel Hands will donate $1 to support this non-profit’s critical services. Keep an eye on Palmetto Place’s socials (@palmettoplace) to see when this year’s Boos & Brews will take place!

THANKSGIVING FOOD DONATIONS

Ahead of the holiday season, Palmetto Place will accept Thanksgiving dinner baskets for their residents. These baskets will not only provide nourishment to current shelter residents and those in their aftercare program; they will also provide residents an opportunity to learn to cook for themselves—a key step to independent living.

We are incredibly fortunate to have such a giving non-profit in the Midlands, helping youths who may be otherwise overlooked. If you’re looking for any more opportunities to donate your time or extra money to Palmetto Place, please visit their website, palmettoplace.org, or call their team at (803) 350-9323.
