WHY DO I NEED A SLEEP STUDY? If your doctor has recommended that you come to Lakeside Sleep Center for a sleep study, you are most likely experiencing symptoms of a sleep disorder – conditions that affect the quality and duration of your sleep, such as apnea, restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy or insomnia. Untreated, these conditions can pose serious threats to your health and well-being – but a sleep study is the first step toward correcting these problems, enabling you to experience deep, restful sleep again and vastly improving your quality of life as a result.

WE’RE GLAD TO HAVE YOU! At Lakeside Sleep Center, you will be under the care of Dr. Rosemary Cirelli and Dr. Frank Montoya, two of Lake County’s most experienced Board Certified Sleep Physicians, as well as a team of Board Registered Technologists - a staff with over 60 years of combined experience in pulmonary and sleep medicine. Our state-of-the-art facility, located conveniently off of US Highway 441 in Tavares, is both comfortable and quiet. Each room is furnished with a queen-sized bed, rocker/recliner, and television; a refrigerator and microwave are available for your use, so bring any snacks you might like during your stay. Water, juice and decaffeinated coffee are provided. While most studies are conducted in the evenings, we happily accommodate overnight workers who require daytime studies. Ask for more details!

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARRIVE To ensure we can obtain a quality study, please arrive with your hair clean, dry and free of hairspray, gels and conditioners. We ask gentlemen to be clean-shaven unless you have a beard or mustache, and ladies – no makeup, please! Do not nap or drink any caffeinated or alcoholic beverages on the day of your test. Please arrive at the lab between 7:30 and no later than 8:00 pm. One of our sleep technologists will greet you and explain the procedures for the test, and you’ll have a couple of hours to settle in to your room and relax before bedtime.

BEFORE YOU GO TO SLEEP After checking in and getting settled in your room, spending a couple of hours doing what you would normally do to unwind (such as watching TV or reading), you will prepare for sleep at a normal bedtime - typically between 10:00 and 11:00 pm. Before you go to sleep, your sleep technologist will apply electrodes and various respiratory measuring devices to your body (face, chest and legs). These will track your brain waves, breathing patterns and muscle tension. The equipment may feel odd, but you will not feel any pain. Try to relax and make yourself as comfortable as possible!

WHILE YOU SLEEP While you are sleeping, your sleep technologist is closely monitoring the data being collected from the measurement devices; your sleep is also being recorded for visual and audio cues that may be important in establishing a clear picture of your sleep disorder. If you need to get up during the night, or any of the equipment comes loose due to normal sleep movements, your sleep technologist will come to assist you. In the morning, when the test is over, you will be awakened and disconnected from the testing equipment, after which you are free to shower, dress and go home!

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER THE SLEEP STUDY The data collected during the study will be reviewed and studied to determine what sleep disorder or disorders may be present, and how a Sleep Specialist could best treat them. This information will be passed on to your referring doctor.
