LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Each year we are so proud of our graduating seniors. The Class of 2018 was an exceptionally talented group. Out of 47 graduates, 55 percent graduated with college credits and 94 percent are enrolled in a four year university or college, with an additional two percent attending a 2 year college. We had one AP Scholar with distinction, three AP Scholars with honor, and four AP Scholars. We had 15 Florida Bright Futures Scholarship recipients, 11 Florida Academic Scholars, and four Medallion Scholars. We had nine athletes signed with college athletic scholarships. The Class of 2018 received a combined $2.69 million in scholarship awards. That is an outstanding accomplishment. On top of their academic achievements, the Class of 2018 completed 7,700 hours of community service. That serving spirit is one of the best aspects of being a MDCA student. These talented students will do well in college, the military service or their chosen professions. In August, we welcomed a host of new and returning students at MDCA for the start of a new academic year. We can’t wait to see what the Class of 2019 will do. Our theme for this school year is “Dare to be…” and aims to provide a center-point for the different characteristics we strive ‘to be’ in our daily lives. August’s characteristic was ‘Dare To Be Vulnerable’, which means taking the risk to open oneself up to other people and more importantly to God, and being able to show your truth while quietly listening for God’s direction. With so many daily technological distractions, it is easy to curate a false self on social media, live for what others think or to focus on everything else. We forget to stop and spend time with God. As we work through spiritual formation this year we hope students take the time to discover who they are, develop who they want to become, and focus on improving their walks with Christ. We want our students to ‘Dare To Be a Bulldog’ by embracing school spirit and sharing that with classmates, teachers, and friends. We want them to build relationships with fellow students by showing kindness and compassion for each other. We want them to strengthen their relationships with Christ, and to encourage their peers to do the same. All God’s blessings,

Dr. James E. Moore President

SOCIAL SERVICES The Joy of Giving Tim Deem, Vice President of Development A frequent question I hear from donors is, “I want to make a gift to support the work at Mount Dora, but I’m wondering if there is a way to get a bigger tax break?” Donating to charity can provide a charitable deduction if you itemize your taxes. Here are four other strategies from Kiplinger to help you stretch your tax savings even further than just using cash. Donate appreciated stock. If you have stock that has increased in value since you bought it more than a year ago, you can give it to Mount Dora and deduct its value on the day you give it. By giving the stock directly, you’ll avoid having to pay capital gains taxes on the increase in value. Remember, you can deduct the current value only if you have held the stock for more than a year before donating. If you’ve held it for less than a year, your deduction is limited to your cost basis (what you paid for the stock). Sell losing stock first. If the stock has lost value, it’s better to sell it first and take a capital loss, and if you itemize you can also deduct your charitable contribution. Your capital losses are first used to offset capital gains, and if you have more losses than gains, up to $3000 of the excess can be deducted against other kinds of income, such as your salary and interest income.

#DARE TO

Give to a donor advised fund. If you’d like to take a charitable deduction now but want more time to decide which charities to support, you can give cash, stock, or other investments to a donor-advised fund. Some of these funds will accept real estate, privately held stock, and other complex investments that many charities don’t accept directly. You can open a donor-advised fund at many brokerage firms and community foundations. You’ll generally need at least $5-10,000 to open the account, and you can invest the money in several investing pools until you’re ready to make grants to charities. Setting up a donoradvised fund can also be a great way to teach your children and grandchildren about philanthropy by working together to select which charities to support. Give your RMD to charity. If you’re over 70½, you can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to charity each year, which counts as your required minimum distribution but isn’t included in your adjusted gross income. You can’t deduct the donation as a charitable contribution, but keeping the money out of your adjusted gross income can have extra benefits: You get a tax benefit for the donation even if you don’t itemize, and sheltering the money from your adjusted gross income could help you avoid the Medicare high income surcharge. The money must be transferred directly from the IRA to the charity, so contact your IRA administrator to discuss the procedure. If you have questions, or would like more information about donating and estate planning, please contact me directly at 352729-9015 or by email at tim.deem@MDCAcademy.org. 

This is a year Ben and Rebekah Liddle won’t forget. In January, they became parents to their first child, a baby girl named Gwendolyn. In August, they became “parents” to the teenage boys living in Lugar Cottage at Mount Dora Children’s Home. Ben and Bekah are new houseparents, replacing Chris and Tonya Hagan, who moved to be closer to family in Tennessee after seven years here. In addition to his role as “house dad,” Ben is teaching math at Mount Dora Christian Academy. His classes include Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, and Honors Geometry. Graduates of Harding University, Ben and Rebekah came here from Amarillo, Texas, where Ben was a credit analyst for a bank and Bekah was children’s minister for Comanche Trail Church of Christ. She has also served as a preschool teacher in the past, and both Ben and Bekah share a passion for working with children. “Ben and I love kids and are thrilled with the opportunity to open our home and show God’s love to other children," Bekah said. “We look forward to many years of service to the Mount Dora family.” “We are excited to have Ben and Rebekah as new houseparents,” said Chuck Shepherd, Director of Social Services. “They bring a new energy and youth to our program. Their past experience with relief houseparenting will be an asset in working with children at Mount Dora Children’s Home.”  4 | Imagine Magazine Fall 2018 – #DareToBe

Two New Families Join Single-Parent Program, While One Graduates The Single-Parent Program at Mount Dora Children’s Home recently welcomed two new families and honored another family who has graduated out of the program. Ashlee Gainey and her daughter, Iris, recently moved onto campus, occupying the first of several housing units on campus undergoing major renovations as part of the Single-Parent Program. She moved here from Sarasota after learning about the SingleParent Program at her church. Ashlee is now enrolled in medical assisting classes at Lake Technical College. Another new single parent, Latoshia Gunter, joined the program recently and brought her two daughters, Terriayna Spillman, 17, and Miya Macon, 12. In their first few weeks here, the girls attended Central Florida Bible Camp, a summer tradition for MDCH children.

Pursue Your Dreams Several recent graduates from Mount Dora Children’s Home are pursuing college degrees, and one has joined the military. Jerry Mendez, who graduated from MDCA last spring and lived on campus in Lugar Cottage, is now enrolled as a freshman at Freed-Hardeman University, a Christian college in Tennessee. Two 2017 MDCA graduates from the Children’s Home are returning as sophomores to Christian colleges this fall. They are Jamie Merrill at Faulkner University in Alabama and Athena Wagner at Harding University in Arkansas. Another 2017 graduate, Jasper Pierre, is enrolled at Collin College in Texas. His older brother, Jeremiah Pierre, a 2016 MDCA graduate, recently joined the U.S. Marine Corps. Jasper and Jeremiah’s younger brother, Jesiah, is a senior this year at MDCA and plans to attend the University of Florida on a football scholarship. We’re proud of all of these graduates and wish them well on their educations and careers! 

A farewell reception recently honored a successful graduating single parent, Wendy Keith Merrill. While in the program, Wendy worked exceptionally hard to further her education, while also taking time to share her story at MDCH benefit dinners. During her time here, Wendy completed a bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology with a minor in studio art at UCF. She is beginning graduate studies this fall. Wendy’s daughter, Jamie, a MDCA graduate, is now a sophomore at Faulkner University. Wendy also has a 12-year-old son, Jarred. If you would like to help with the continuing renovations on all the housing units used in the Single-Parent Program – approximately $17,000 per unit – please send donations to the Development Office, Mount Dora Children’s Home, 301 W. 13th Ave., Mount Dora, FL 32757, or call 352-383-0762.  #DareToBe – Imagine Magazine Fall 2018 | 5

The years of prayer, hard work, and dedication all paid off for Senior Linebacker Jesiah Pierre as he verbally committed to play football for the University of Florida Gators this summer. He is currently the Number 2-ranked player in the Orlando Sentinel’s 2019 Central Florida Super60. Jesiah has been a student at MDCA for the past five years. The faculty, staff, coaches, parents and students have enjoyed watching this young man grow in faith, physical ability, and character. 

The MDCA Varsity Cheer Squad won first place in the Small Varsity Category at the Universal Cheerleading Association camp at USF this summer. “The squad had a top-notch performance, and I couldn’t be more proud of them,” exclaimed Varsity Head Coach Cindy Brown. Three seniors, Jessa Fechtenburg, Mckenna Ross, and Johanna Vilarson, were also selected as UCA All-American cheerleaders, the highest honor given in high school cheerleading. “It’s also exciting to have three AllAmericans because the selection process is so stringent,” Brown said. “Out of nearly 500 girls at this camp, only about 20 girls were selected, and this is the third year in a row that Johanna has been selected.” 

This past spring, the auditorium came alive for three nights with the hearts and voices of MDCA’s elementary students as they presented Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs the Musical. The production was directed by MDCA’s Theatre Director Cheryl Abbate, with musical direction given by MDCA’s elementary music teacher Leah Richmond. The students worked hard for months to learn their lines, blocking, and songs and it truly paid off as this production was enjoyed by audiences all three nights. 

This spring our MDCA Speech and Theatre classes fueled their imaginations as they teamed up to enter the Youthful Voices Storytelling Competition. The students researched stories and rehearsed the art of Storytelling. With a record number of entries this year, MDCA received an Honors Recognition. 

STUDENT LIFE # D A R E T O Lead: John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” Four of MDCA’s student leaders attended the Presidential Leadership Institute at York College this past summer. Gracie Nichols, Olivia Valente, Shea Holbrook, and Johanna Vilarson all worked together to find new ways to lead and inspire the student body to reach their own goals, dreams, and aspirations all while glorifying God. This week-long leadership institute has become a tradition for MDCA student leaders and has proved to be an invaluable experience guiding each group to continuously improve the culture on campus. 

# D A R E T O Speak Out: MDCA 5th grader, Sadie Pruett, won first place in the 4-H Lake County Tropicana Speech Contest. MDCA 4th and 5th graders participate in the 4-H Tropicana Speech Contest every year. This program teaches students how to successfully speak in public through lessons in picking a topic, writing a speech, and presentation skills. The lessons culminate into a class, school, and finally county competition. Congratulations, Sadie! 

# D A R E T O Give: Even the smallest students at MDCA can make a big impact. MDCA elementary students raised $4,866.00 for the American Heart Association with their annual Jump Rope for Heart campaign. All of the students had a great time participating in this fantastic event, and the top fundraisers were then treated to a donut party to receive their awards. 

# D A R E T O Compete: MDCA's Senior Beta Club traveled to Savannah, Georgia this summer to compete in the National Beta Convention. Class of 2018 MDCA Senior, outgoing State Beta President, and National Ambassador Emily Leto was presented a plaque as recipient of the third highest National Beta Scholarship for $8,000. Senior Emily Reising placed 9th nationally in Digital Art and 10th nationally in Fiber Art. Hannah Leto, Molly Elenz, Emily Reising, Johanna Vilarson, Danielle Christopher, and Emily Leto placed 7th in Recycle, Recreate, Reimagine for the Savannah Trolley they created completely out of recycled products. Thanks to all the Beta sponsors, parents, and volunteers for a successful year! 

# D A R E T O Explore: MDCA elementary and middle school students dared to dream big as they attended Space Camp this summer in Huntsville, Alabama. The students were challenged to improve their leadership, teamwork, and critical thinking skills as they worked together through simulated space missions. The students were surrounded with inspiration at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, which is filled with space, aviation, and defense artifacts. Maybe the next NASA or ESA astronaut, engineer, scientist, or technologist is attending MDCA today!  #DareToBe – Imagine Magazine Fall 2018 | 15
