Welcome to Tavares, America’s Seaplane City With a FAA certified virtual 3,000 foot runway for seaplane landings and takeoffs, a central Florida location, and a vibrant Entertainment District. Tavares provides an ideal location for seaplane pilots to visit. Over 12,000 take offs and landings from the Tavares Seaplane Base & Marina in its first five years of operation support this fact. Tavares offers non-ethanol aviation and marina fuel but is much more than a fuel stop - over 20 restaurants and businesses are within walking distance of the seaplane base. In the spring of 2012, just across the street from the seaplane base, two boutique hotels opened. Jamie Beckett of General Aviation News stated, “Tavares is perfect for seaplane aficionados”. Tavares has served as the County Seat for Lake County, Florida, since 1888. The city’s historic downtown lies on the shores of beautiful Lake Dora, and still maintains its small town charm. Picturesque Wooton Park sits only one block from Main Street and offers families everything from picnic pavilions to boat ramps. Tavares is also home to the Dora Canal, known as the most beautiful mile of waterway in the world. Tavares boasts a bustling economic climate, with national, regional, and local businesses located along the Highway 441 corridor as well as in the downtown business district. Tavares is the perfect hometown with access to the Harris chain of lakes and easy commutes to Florida’s major attractions, resorts, and beaches. It is located less than an hour from the Atlantic Ocean, and less than 90 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico. Tavares’s geographic location in the center of the Sunshine State led to the community’s birth and growth. Tavares is 25 miles from I-4 and 25 miles from I-75 and is only 15 miles from the Florida Turnpike. Tavares, with over 14,000 residents, is the “Capital of Lake County” and the seat of the county’s government. Lake County totals 1,156 square miles and contains over 1,400 named lakes. Tavares’s central location affords many of its seasonal residents, affectionately referred to as “snow birds”, the ideal location to reside while they escape the frigid winter weather north of the Florida border. Tavares provides the perfect place to call home during the cold winters to the north. In 2011, Tavares was awarded the prestigious William C. Tavares accomplished this goal by following the vision of its citizens, developing a successful and award-winning downtown “Master Plan”, and by rebranding itself as “America’s Seaplane City.” The Downtown Entertainment District offers something for everyone - from lakeside barbeque to gourmet dining, from fine lodging to quaint retreats, from splash parks to train rides, and from fishing to boating. Tavares’s downtown has it all - from Lake Dora’s morning sparkle to its gorgeous scenic sunsets! Tavares is a great family destination as well. The Tavares Splash Park, located in Wooton Park, is open from April to October. It provides a refreshing water park experience to thousands of young visitors. Wooton Park, located on Lake Dora, is the setting for many exciting community events and festivals throughout the year. Wooton Park is a five acre park, with two playgrounds and five picnic areas, with plenty of convenient parking. Just a few of the annual springtime events include the Classic Race Boat Association Regatta, the Sunnyland Antique & Classic Boat Society Show, Planes, Trains & BBQ, and the Rotary Club of Lake County Golden Triangle’s Central Florida Dragon Boat Festival. Tavares has gained national attention, hosting the acclaimed BassMasters Elite Series and Hydro-X Tours Jet Ski Racing Competition. The future of Tavares is being built on its historic past. The original transportation networks of waterways and railways have reemerged, and are now integral to the vision of what Tavares has become leading into the 21st Century. Wooton Park is home of a replica of the original 1871 Woodlea House, a twostory house built by Civil War captain and Florida statesman Melton Haynes. State historians credit Capt. Haynes with introducing the sweet orange tree to central Florida. The replica is one of the central focal points in Wooton Park, housing the city’s “Prop Shop” and Seaplane Terminal. Tavares was named after Lopez Para y Tavares, a grandee of Spain and an ancestor of the city’s founder, Maj. Alexander St. Clair-Abrams. Natural Eco-Friendly Alternative Tavares has embraced, preserved and promoted the surrounding natural resources while planning for the future of the area. Ecotourism abounds in Tavares and in Lake County. With more than 1,400 named lakes throughout a county the size of the state of Rhode Island, numerous environmental areas and many points of lake access provide residents and visitors a multitude of means to get back to nature. Accommodations range from nationallyknown names to local lodging, which includes cottages, cabins and bed-and-breakfasts.

Just 20 minutes away is the Ocala-Wekiva Greenway consisting of the Ocala National Forest and the Wekiva River Basin. Lake Griffin State Park is located near Leesburg, Lake Louisa State Park is just south of Clermont. A short distance away in Sumter County is Withlacoochee State Park and just to the east in Orange County is Wekiva Springs State Park. The Harris Chain of Lakes is part of Lake County’s Community Blueways Project. A blueway is similar to a hiking trail. Physical and geo-positioned markers guide trail users through the waterways. Lake County’s ideal blueway trails includes an abundance of scenery and wildlife, as well as easy canoe and kayak access. The Lake County Community Blueways project identifies scenic waterways that feature nearby amenities for paddlers. The Golden Triangle Run portion of the blueway skirts along the lakefronts of Tavares and Mount Dora, and is a shorter trail suitable for casual or novice users.

A Day on the Lake Bordered by three impressive bodies of water, Lake Eustis, Lake Harris and Lake Dora, Tavares offers abundant water recreation opportunities for all. The Dora Canal was referred to as “the most beautiful mile of waterway in the world” according to famous columnist Grantland Rice. The canal, dredged several times during the late 1800s and early 1900s, was previously known as the Elfin River. The waterway provides a glimpse of “ancient Florida,” complete with cypress trees, Spanish moss, waterfowl, raccoons, bobcats - and gators. Boat excursions are

available, providing tours of Lake County’s waterways. Fishing remains today as a popular pastime, with trophy- sized bass, crappie, bluegill, and shell crackers among the most frequent catches. The seven lakes that make up the Harris Chain of Lakes continue to produce quality fish that entices professionals, such as the Bassmasters Elite and Crappie Masters to the area for competition. Access to the chain of lakes is abundant, with one ramp located on Lake Dora in downtown at Wooton Park, one located on Lake Eustis on US 441, just west of downtown at the Tavares Recreation Park, and another located on Lake Harris south of town on SR 19 at Hickory Point Park. Unique to Tavares is that the city is a land bridge winding through the chain of lakes. Downtown Tavares sits on the shore of Lake Dora, while Lake Eustis lies to the north and Lake Harris is to the west and south. These major lakes flow north to the Ocklawaha River, to the St. Johns River and out to the Atlantic Ocean. Lake Dora flows through the Dora Canal to Lake Eustis, as does Lake Harris through the Dead River. Lake Eustis flows northwest through Haynes Creek to Lake Griffin, which flows to the Ocklawaha River. R

Recreational Activities Abound Centrally located on the Harris Chain of Lakes, Tavares is the ideal spot to begin your boating and fishing adventures. Boat ramps are located throughout the community. Tavares has an easy canoe and kayak access to the Dora Canal via Summerall Park, located on the west side of downtown. Tavares and the nearby area is home to public and private golf courses, each of which offers its own unique challenge. In Tavares you’ll find Deer Island Country Club and Fisherman’s Cove Resort, and in neighboring communities, you can experience the Mission Inn Resort, Arlington Ridge Golf Club and Harbor Hills Country Club. Many other outdoor activities can be discovered, such as the exciting and creative Wooton Wonderland, an elaborate wooden playground located in Wooton Park. Tavares maintains 259.75 acres of active and passive parks, including the Tavares Skate Park on Woodlea Road and Squibb Park’s boardwalk into the wetlands on Dead River Road. Tavares Nature Park near Highway 19 offers a passive experience adjacent to Lake Dora’s western shore. Aesop’s Park features tennis courts, community garden, a lake with a nature trail, and a dog park. Fred Stover Field, located in the city’s center, provides a collection of baseball and softball fields utilized year round. The Central Florida YMCA, located on David Walker Drive, provides numerous recreational and wellness facilities and programs. Lake County’s Agricultural Center is located in Tavares. This educational resource features the Discovery Gardens, a series of themed demonstration garden areas designed in a park-like setting. Tavares is also developing a regional trail system for biking or walking. The trail currently connects downtown to the commercial areas west toward Leesburg. Bikes routes are designated along certain roadways such as Lakeshore Drive along Lake Dora Drive and Lake Eustis Drive.

In 2012, a $6 million, 162,000 square feet, three story sports complex, called The Big House, opened. It includes nine basketball courts, sixteen volleyball courts, batting cages, an indoor track and other amenities. In May 2014, a 20 court sand volleyball complex was built at the Hickory Point Recreational Facility, located on the shores of Lake Harris in Tavares, featuring professional level net systems, lights, permanent restrooms, an intercom system, web cams and 24 inches of top-grade sand. Medical Center Tavares has emerged a health care center thanks to Florida Hospital Waterman and the nearby medical park, home to a wide variety of specialty physicians. Located at the intersection of Burleigh Boulevard (US 441) and Mayo Drive in Tavares, medical services are conveniently located and easily accessible. Several other major hospitals are located nearby, including Leesburg Regional Medical Center and The Villages Regional Medical Center. Lifestreams Behavioral Center in Leesburg provides mental health services. Tavares is home to dozens of physicians, specialists, dentists, technicians and suppliers. The Osprey Lodge, a $30 million lakeside assisted-living facility, offers care for dementia and Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s disease. Osprey Lodge provides a new vision, a new culture, and a new quality of life in adult care by providing a warm ambiance that feels more like home rather than a nursing home. The 140,000 square foot establishment makes use of natural lighting and overlooks beautiful Lake Francis.

Education In the city center is Tavares Elementary School and Tavares High School, a circa 1930â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s campus that is a major center of community activity, especially when the Tavares Bulldogs play. Tavares Middle School sits in the southern portion of the city. Several prekindergarten opportunities are also available as are private school options. The administrative offices of the Lake County School District are located in Tavares. The offices include those of the Lake County School Board and superintendent. Just 10 minutes west in Leesburg sits the 60-acre Lake-Sumter State College. Founded in 1963, this two-year institution offers

Associates of the Arts degrees and four-year degrees in partnership with the University of Central Florida. Lake Technical Center in neighboring Eustis develops skilled workers in more than 30 technical occupations. The main campus of the University of Central Florida is a little over an hour away as is the Gainesville campus of the University of Florida.

Commerce Opportunities abound as the city expands its boundaries while still maintaining a balance with its small town charm. The business community is predominately commercial, light industrial and legal support. The largest employer in Tavares is government. More than 1,500 Tavares jobs are public service positions ranging from city to county, from school district to state positions. Being the center of government provides an opportunity for attorneys and legal support services, surveyors and engineers, and many small businesses. Tavares also boasts a booming medical corridor centered around Florida Hospital Waterman on US 441. The community is also home to several unique industries, such as Progressive Aerodyne, a service provider of sport amphibian aircraft. Tavares features one of the largest employment centers in Lake County. Florida Central Railroad serves the job center by providing freight rail services into Orlando. A Vibrant Events Calendar There are some mainstay Tavares events that are as traditional as apple pie. For example, as the “Capital of Lake County,” Tavares is host to the annual Independence Day Celebration, which features a festival in Wooton Park, a parade down Main & Ruby Streets and spectacular fireworks display over Lake Dora. November features the Taste of Golden Triangle, a Chamber event where members compete for the coveted prize of “The Best”. Government Since 1888, Tavares has reigned as the governmental seat of a county just slightly smaller in area than the state of Rhode Island. The lakeside government complex houses many county government offices, including the Board of County Commissioners, and the Lake County Judicial Center. Downtown Tavares is a true governmental center, with county offices on the western side of downtown, Tavares City Hall and the Tavares Chamber of Commerce on the eastern side of downtown and the Lake County School District offices located on the northern edge of the city center. Things have changed quickly for Lake County’s Capital. The population in Tavares is close to 15,000. Meanwhile, the county population has jumped from 210,000 in 2000 to more than 300,000, creating a major demand on county governmental services. This has necessitated expansion of government buildings in the downtown area.

Capital of Lake County Tavares has always been a central location. Geographically, Tavares sits midway on the Florida peninsula. Native tribes found the Tavares highlands overlooking the lakes to be a safe location set away from the storms coming in off the coast. Later, Tavares became a transportation center. It was the boat that first allowed settlement, as Tavares is connected by a navigable waterway system to the Atlantic Ocean via the Ocklawaha River to the St. Johns River. However, it was the train that populated Lake County. Conveniently located northwest of Orlando, Tavares saw a major line enter from the south. Another line from Jacksonville entered from the north from Eustis. A line through Mount Dora led to Sanford and a line west extended to a rail hub in Wildwood. Back in the 19th century, Maj. St. Clair Abrams began implementing a vision for Tavares. He not only oversaw the development of the hub of rail lines converging in Tavares, he saw the future capital of the state waiting to be realized. In 1888, a spark from a train ignited trash that had fallen under the wooden sidewalk in the downtown, destroying three dozen buildings in a matter of minutes. That same year, the Florida legislature removed Tavares from consideration as a potential new center of state government. Although the times have changed, one factor remains a constant for Tavares. It is the center of government for Lake County and it is, therefore, Lake County’s Capital City. A partnership has evolved through the years between Lake County’s Board of County Commissioners and the Tavares City Council. About the Chamber A chamber of commerce (also referred to in some circles as a board of trade) is a form of business network, e.g., a local organization of businesses whose goal is to further the interests of businesses. Business owners in towns and cities form these local societies to advocate on behalf of the business community. Local businesses are members, and they elect a board of directors or executive council to set policy for the chamber. The board or council then hires a President, CEO or Executive Director, plus staffing appropriate to size, to run the organization. Contrary to popular belief, a chamber of commerce is not part of government and they are not associated with the Better Business Bureau. They exist solely from membership fees and fundraisers. Chambers of commerce exists to promote and provide a combined voice for the business community and membership is strictly voluntary. Unlike some business groups, chambers of commerce do not restrict the number of members in any profession. The Tavares Chamber of Commerce enables people to accomplish collectively what no one can do individually. The Tavares Chamber unites businesses, professionals, and firms who believe that our local economy is based on local businesses doing business with one another. The Tavares Chamber encourages folks to shop locally and to appreciate the effects of a dollar turning over several times within a local economy. The Tavares Chamber focuses on enhancing existing businesses, recruiting quality businesses and linking businesses together. Monthly “Business After Hours” and “Business Luncheons” create a community atmosphere offering businesses networking opportunities. Located in the Tavares Railroad Station, the Tavares Chamber of Commerce is the first stop of many visitors, newcomers and seasonal residents to the local area, inquiring about local businesses. A plethora of community information can be found at the Tavares Chamber including maps, community data, attraction information, member listings and event information. An elected group of the membership governs the Tavares Chamber through a board of directors comprised of business leaders. The Tavares Chamber employs a full-time professional staff to assist and implement its annual goals and objectives. Staff runs day-to-day operations with a cherished team of volunteers. The Tavares Chamber funds many programs guided by committees such as the membership committee, ambassador committee, events committee, legislative and economic development and others.
