Zum ersten kleinen, runden Geburtstag haben wir mitunter Künstler eingeladen, die schon einmal am Festival zu Gast waren und uns – und Ihnen wohl auch – ganz besonders ans Herz gewachsen sind! Stolz sind wir auf unseren zusätzlichen Konzertort, dem «Cinéma Scala», welches wir in Kooperation mit dem Zürcher Jazzclub Moods und Edouard A. Stöckli (Besitzer Cinéma Scala) dieses Jahr zum ersten Mal bespielen werden. Wir laden Sie herzlich ein, mit uns einen ganzen Monat im wunderschönen Engadin musikalische Top-Acts zu erleben, die Sie sonst nur in grossen Konzerthäusern sehen und hören können. Ich danke all den lieben Menschen, die dieses gegenstromförmige Festival ermöglichen.

ALLEGRA AL DRACULA-CLUB

«Highest Club Festival» Bereits im fünften Jahr in Folge kann die Frage, wie man auf die Idee kommt gerade in St. Moritz ein Jazz Festival aufzuziehen, mit der simplen Antwort: «Wo sonst spiegelt sich die unbändige Kraft, die Freiheit und Schönheit des Jazz so sehr in der unmittelbaren Umgebung wieder wie hier, in den Bündner Bergen?», beantwortet werden.

Es ist tatsächlich so, dass wir das wohl höchstgelegene Jazz Festival der Welt veranstalten. Eingerahmt von Piz Bernina und Piz Nair strahlt die Musik des Festivals mittlerweile weit über die Grenzen der Schweiz hinaus und macht es so zu einem Anziehungspunkt von Musikliebhabern aus der ganzen Welt.

Deshalb wird in Zukunft die Antwort auf die Frage nach dem Warum nur noch lauten: «Wo denn sonst, wenn nicht hier in St. Moritz?»

Already for the fifth year in a row, the question of how we came up with the idea of organising a jazz festival in St. Moritz has a simple answer: “Is there another place where the boundless energy, the freedom and beauty of jazz is better reflected in the immediate surroundings than here, in the mountains of Grisons?”

As a matter of fact, with the Festival da Jazz in St. Moritz, we organise the highest jazz festival in the world.

Nestling between the imposing peaks of Piz Bernina and Piz Nair, the festival is today known far beyond the borders of Switzerland and has become an attraction for fans of good music from all over the world.

In future, the answer to the question why will therefore simply be: “Where else, if not here in St. Moritz?”

Main Concerts LIVE AT DRACULA CLUB Der 1974 von Gunter Sachs gegründete Club der Vampire wurde durch all seine Sagen, Märchen und Wahrheiten mit der Zeit zum Mythos und erreicht unter dem Präsidium ihrer Heiligkeit, dem Designer und Professor mit Leerstuhl in England, «his Highness» Rolf Sachs, definitiv Kultstatus. Hier trifft Geist und Humor aufeinander, auch wenn es nur darum geht, mal aus dem alltäglichen Schema auszubrechen. IMPROVISATION wird hier gross geschrieben.

So wird dem wundersamen Gebälk seit 2007 neuer Atem eingehaucht: Jazz.

Thanks to myths, fairy tales and truths, the Club of the Vampires, founded

by Gunter Sachs in 1974, has over the years become a legend and under the presidency of his holiness, the designer and professor with a chair in England, his highness Rolf Sachs, it has definitely gained cult status. Intellect and humour come together here, even if it is just to leave the daily grind behind for a while. Here it’s improvisation with a capital I. Since 2007 the vault has been given a breath of fresh air: jazz. The Dracula Club is the heart of the Festival da Jazz. Auf die Titelseiten von Zeitungen kommt Island fast nur dann, wenn ein Vulkan wie der Eyjafjallajökull ausbricht und den Flugverkehr lahmlegt. In den Kulturspalten taucht Island ebenfalls eher selten auf, aber wenn die Insel dort auftaucht, dann mit Ausnahmeerscheinungen wie der feenhaften Sängerin Björk oder der Marathon-Fusion-Band Mezzoforte. Die Gruppe wurde 1977 von Teenagern ins Leben gerufen und konnte

über all die Jahre hinweg eine treue Fangemeinde bei der Stange halten. Übrigens: Das neueste Album von Mezzoforte trägt den Titel «Volcanic» und kommt ganz schön Forte daher.

Matt Bianco Bei der hemmungslos hedonistischen und leichtfüssigen Musik der Band Matt Bianco muss man unweigerlich an Copacabana und Caipirinha denken.

Mit ihrem Brazil-Pop-Jazz liefern Matt Bianco den Soundtrack für Playgirls und Playboys, die die Leichtigkeit des Seins mit lasziver Sexyness zelebrieren und die gerne in cooler Lounge-Atmosphäre an kühlen Drinks nippen und elegant auf- und abwippen. 1986 landete die

Band hierzulande auf Platz 3 der Hitparade. Im Zuge des 80s-Revival können diese oftmals kopierten, aber nie erreichten Musikpioniere ein verdientes Comeback feiern.

Dee Dee Bridgewater Dass sie den Vergleich mit den Ikonen der Jazzvokalkunst nicht zu scheuen braucht, hat Dee Dee Bridgewater bereits des öfteren bewiesen – man denke etwa an ihre Hommage an Ella Fitzgerald. Nun erweist Bridgewater mit Billie Holiday, der Antipodin Fitzgeralds, ihre Reverenz. Holiday holte aus kleinsten Nuancen ein Maximum an emotionaler Dringlichkeit heraus.

Der Klarinettist Tony Scott hielt fest:

«Wenn Ella singt, ihr Mann habe sie verlassen, denkt man, der Typ sei schnell raus gegangen, um ein Brot zu kaufen.

SONNTAG 15. JULI pays tribute to Fitzgerald’s antipode Billie Holiday. Through a nuance in her tone of voice, Holiday managed to get across a maximum of emotional immediacy. The clarinet player Tony Scott once said: “When Ella sings ‘My man he’s left me,’ you think the guy went down the street for a loaf of bread. But when Billie sings, you can see that guy going down the street. He’s got his bags packed and he ain’t never coming back.”

Da kann es kaum verwundern, dass die ultra-dynamische Power-Schlagzeugerin Terri Lyne Carrington lange Zeit als

Sensation gehandelt wurde. Für ihr ambitioniertes Mosaic Project konnte Carrington mit Diane Reeves eine der stärksten Stimmen des emanzipierten Vocal-Jazz gewinnen.

Brad Mehldau Trio Vor zwei Jahren versetzte Brad Mehldau das Publikum in St. Moritz mit einem mal innig, mal rauschhaft zwischen piano und forte oszillierenden SoloRezital in Entzücken. Nun kehrt der Jazz-Überflieger, der sowohl als Pianist als auch als Komponist neue Massstäbe setzt, mit seinen langjährigen Weggefährten Larry Grenadier (Bass) und Jeff Ballard (Schlagzeug), mit denen er seit 2005 ein Trio bildet, ins Ober-

engadin zurück. Von diesem Jazz-Triumvirat, von dem zuletzt das mit einer Reihe tiefschürfender Hommagen aufwartende Album «Ode» erschien, darf man Geistesblitze am Laufmeter erwarten.

Alfredo Rodriguez Trio / Duo GisBranco Alfredo Rodriguez teilte sich die Bühne bereits mit legendären Latin-Pianisten wie Eddy Palmieri oder Michel Camilo: Der Kubaner, der massgeblich von Quincy Jones gefördert wurde, ist ein einfallsreicher Innovator und furchtloser «Flügelstürmer» des Latin-Jazz.

On July 17, the concert event will take place in the stylish ‘Cinéma Scala’ in St. Moritz. The cinema hall has a charming patina just like the legendary Dracula Club and is therefore perfect for the festival. Diese Bühne rundet von Donnerstag bis Samstag mit ihrer Reihe «RoundMidnight-Concerts» den Tag ab.

Wie der bekannte Jazz-Standard von Thelonius Monk verrät, treten etwa um Mitternacht junge, aufstrebende Talente auf. Immer wieder wird die Miles Davis Lounge zur Bühne für «Jamsessions». Nachdem die Konzerte nicht nur während dem Festival, sondern auch im Winter sehr erfolgreich waren, werden wir die Reihe auch im kommenden Winter weiterbetreiben. Zu guter Letzt: Hier darf auch nicht geraucht werden.

The latest addition to the Festival da Jazz is the Miles Davis Lounge at our principal house, the Kulm Hotel.

From Thursday to Saturday, this new rounds off the evenings with a series of “Round-Midnight-Concerts”. As the name of Thelonius Monk’s favourite jazz standard suggests, the concerts start around midnight and young, tallented bands. Furthermore, it is also the stage for jam sessions – musicians can play and improvise as they please here. We will continue to run this new concert series in winter. Be reassured though: you don’t have to smoke.

One cannot imagine the festival without them: the Sunday morning concerts on the sunny Hauser terrace in the middle of St. Moritz. From the beginning of the Festival da Jazz, Markus Hauser has committed himself to bringing excellent music to the village. Othella Dallas Othella Dallas als unverwüstliche Vollblut-Entertainerin zu bezeichnen, kommt einer eklatanten Untertreibung gleich. Die 1925 in Memphis geborene Sängerin und Tänzerin ist ein Energiebündel: Sie strahlt Vitalität und Lebensfreude aus und will von abgeklärter Altersmilde partout nichts wissen – dass sie sich nach wie vor als «The little girl from Memphis» bezeichnet, hat also durchaus seine Berechtigung.

To call Othella Dallas an indestructible, full-blooded entertainer is clearly an understatement. The singer, born in Memphis in 1925, is a real live-wire, brimming with vitality and joie de vivre.

She isn’t the slightest bit interested in mellowing down with age and that she still calls herself “The little girl from Memphis” is therefore very well justified indeed.

SwingDanceOrchestra Berlin Andrej Hermlin wurde 1965 als Sohn des Schriftstellers Stephan Hermlin in Ost-Berlin geboren. Im zarten Alter von vier Jahren wurde Hermlin vom SwingVirus infiziert. Nach einem Klavierstudium gr端ndete er 1986 des Swing Dance Orchestra. Mit der authentischen Umsetzung von Evergreens aus den 30er- und 40er-Jahren konnte diese Big Band nach dem Mauerfall sogar in New York Triumphe feiern.

Andrej Hermlin was born in 1965 as the son of the writer Stephan Hermlin in East Berlin. At the tender age of four, he was infected with the swing-virus.

After studying the piano he founded the Swing Dance Orchestra in 1986.

After the fall of the Berlin wall, his big band even travelled to New York where they celebrated huge success with their authentic interpretations of evergreens from the 1930s and 1940s.

Pat's Big Band Pat’s Big Band wurde 1979 ins Leben gerufen und hat seither den swingenden Soundtrack zu unzähligen rauschenden Ballnächten geliefert. Der erste Auftritt in St. Moritz fand 1986 im Badrutt’s Palace Hotel statt. Alfred Biolek holte Pat’s Big Band mehrmals für TV-Auftritte nach Deutschland.

1999, 2001 und 2011 wurde die Truppe nach China eingeladen (umjubelte Konzerte in Peking und Schanghai).

Pat’s Big Band was founded in 1979 and has since delivered the swinging soundtrack for countless exhilarating ball nights. Their first performance in St. Moritz took place in 1986 at Badrutt’s Palace Hotel. The renowned German TV presenter, Alfred Biolek, had Pat’s Big Band on his show several times and in 1999, 2001 and 2011 the outfit ventured as far as China where they pleased the crowds in Beijing and Shanghai.
