Trex Expands Distribution Network
Trex Company, Inc., the world’s largest manufacturer of wood-alternative decking and residential railing products, has announced multiple expansions to it’s distribution network in different regions of the country.
Trex Grows Distribution Footprint in Four States
Trex Company is expanding its relationship with Weekes Forest Products. As part of this collaboration, territories in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and North Dakota will be served out of Weekes’ distribution center in St. Paul and Moorhead, Minnesota.
“For over two decades Trex, Snavely and Weekes have enjoyed a mutually beneficial distribution relationship in markets from Dallas to Pittsburgh,” says Kevin Brennan, vice president of North American professional sales for Trex. “This expansion of the Weekes footprint further strengthens our reach in the upper Midwest and bolsters our growing connections with Snavely and Weekes, both subsidiaries of MacArthur Company, a well-established leader in the building materials industry, and 100% employee owned.”
“We are excited to expand the Trex product line to the Midwest region,” says John Lesher chief operating officer of Weekes Forest Products. “Outdoor living continues to evolve as people seek to bring the comfort of indoors outside, we're proud to partner with Trex who share in our passion for creating exceptional outdoor experiences.”
This expanded distribution partnership follows Snavely Forest Products’ commitment to sell Trex railing exclusively through its nationwide distribution network in October of 2024.
Weekes Forest Products is the leading distributor of specialty building materials, commodity and MSR lumber, engineered wood components, and industrial materials. Founded in 1902, Snavely Forest Products is a recognized leader in the wholesale lumber and building products industry, delivering superior material, exceptional service and market expertise to customers both near and far.

Trex Expands with SBP in the Midwest Trex Company is expanding its relationship with Specialty Building Products (SBP) in Michigan. SBP will now provide state-wide distribution coverage out of its Jackson and Traverse City Amerhart distribution centers.
This expansion builds on the success of the long-standing Trex-SBP national collaboration. The expansion of Amerhart’s distribution coverage in Michigan enhances Trex’s market coverage and further ensures that our channel partners will have market leading access for all our decking and railing products.
“As one of our largest national distributors, SBP and its Amerhart branches were the natural choice for this expansion in Michigan,” says Kevin Brennan, vice president of North American professional sales for Trex. “The Midwest has always been Trex territory, and we are confident that continued
investments in our distribution footprint through leading companies like SBP will further our growth for years to come.”
“Trex is known industry wide as the premier outdoor living innovator and manufacturer,” says Ashley Kay, chief commercial officer at Specialty Building Products. “For more than 20 years we’ve experienced this firsthand across our other geographies. Today, we look forward to growing together in Michigan and view this as a great vote of confidence in our future together.”
SBP and Trex have built their distribution relationship over several decades, creating a strong national network plus Canada. SBP is a leading provider of building materials in North America, with a deep understanding of the market and a commitment to delivering high-quality products.

From Start-up Spirit to Global Safety Standard: D&D’s David Calabria Hands Over the Reins
David Calabria’s D&D story began in the early 1990s after making a career pivot from banking and futures trading to the nuts-and-bolts world of gate hardware manufacturing. It was a surprising shift that would go on to elevate the Australian business into a global success story.
After initially consulting to the fledging business to help them scale their systems and operations, fate intervened, and Calabria chose to make D&D his permanent home. With a natural entrepreneurial instinct, he saw the growth potential immediately.
By 1991, he was on the road with a backpack of samples, introducing innovations like the D&D MagnaLatch® to Europe. Five years later he moved to the United States, settled in Huntington Beach, California, and built a formidable North American presence.
The formula was simple and relentless: champion product innovation, move quickly, and keep quality non-negotiable. It worked. Calabria’s hands-on expansion made D&D a respected global force across North America and Europe without losing the character of a tight, entrepreneurial team.
That entrepreneurial culture is the thread running through Calabria’s tenure. Inspired by founder David Doyle, he hired people with a passion for excellence. That culture of quality and accountability helped D&D earn its place in the ASSA ABLOY family in 2022, giving the business new reach and resources.
Calabria’s leadership also carried a clear sense of purpose: products that prevent the unimaginable. He has been a prominent advocate for drowningprevention efforts, helping to galvanize disparate groups and champion practical risk-reduction strategies in both Australia and the United States. He was instrumental in D&D’s founding of the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA).
Ask Calabria about legacy and the answer is characteristically modest— relationships, culture, growth—yet one decision stands tall: keeping manufacturing in Australia. He argues it has safeguarded quality and supported onshore jobs and skills over decades. That insistence on local craftsmanship, paired with global market reach, is now part of D&D’s DNA.
Under his watch, the company has relentlessly focused on innovation, from cornerstone products like MagnaLatch® to newfound technologies such as the TruClose® MultiAdjust Heavy Duty hinge and a soon-to-be-released commercial panic bar. Today, D&D stands as a premium, safety-led brand with a clear plan for continued growth in the US and abroad.
After more than three decades at the helm, Calabria recently announced his well-earned retirement. For an industry that values trust, reliability, and the kind of pragmatism that turns ideas into reality, his career is a case study in how to build a global business without losing the human principles that make it worth building.
Looking ahead, continuity is assured. Long-time COO David Eustice has been appointed D&D Technologies new CEO. He now leads with a clear mandate: keep D&D pointed at innovation that drives market share, function as one team, and grow in new and existing markets by staying true to what sets D&D apart: outstanding product quality and premium service.

MARCH | Tom Barenberg, President | TREX SRF
Tom Barenberg got his start in the fence industry by installing and repairing fences on his grandfather’s farm. As a teen he worked as a yard man at a lumberyard and then began installing the fence materials the customers purchased. That was the beginning of Split Rail Fence Co., which would go on to become the largest installer of Trex and the largest fence company in the Rocky Mountain region.
Today, he serves as the president of Trex SRF, the national distributor for TREX fencing.
Barenberg encourages those entering the industry to “spend time with those who are experienced so they can show you the ropes. Fencing is a great industry with a lot of opportunities for anyone willing to work hard and learn.”

MAY | Steve Peters, Executive Vice President – Principal | Southwestern Wire
Steve Peters and his business partner Max Moore were both involved in family business but wanted a new opportunity that could be their own. The two found the opportunity in a struggling business that fit their expertise. The offer was made, and Southwestern Wire’s story began.
“Today we employe over 300 people,” says Peters. “We’ve developed a variety of wire products and coatings, contributed to industry standards, expanded distribution across nine yards and are recognized as the largest domestic producer of vineyard wire.”
He says the best advice he’s ever received is to “understand the fundamental components for building a company and its products: Price, Quality and Service – finding the right balance without neglecting any of them.”

June | Ken Ewing, Business Development Manager | Bull Barn Fence Factory
Just before completing a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, Ken Ewing shifted his career from teaching to fence sales. However, he says he has never seen himself as a salesperson, but as someone who can help someone else.
“I see it as my job to make sure that everyone gets the best service possible from Bull Barn if we are lucky enough to help them. If I’m not helping our customers grow their business, then what’s the point?”
Ewing has seen the biggest wins, and the biggest challenges the company has faced, but he says the entire team looks at every day as an opportunity. “Bull Barn is a major opportunity for all of us. We are always learning, and our secret is to never be outworked by anyone.”

JULY | Lorri Evans, Owner | Redi Driver
With a passion for solving problems and a knack for building industry relationships, Lorri Evans’s work has shaped the way contractors approach post driving solutions. A proclaimed self-taught fence professional, Evans learned on the job after her husband started his own fence company, STAR Fence. The REDI Driver brand started from a single phone call to Australia after searching the web for a self-contained post driver. Today, almost every gas-powered post driver originates from the original REDI Driver machine.
“We quickly learned if we could get REDI Driver in the hands of contractors, they would buy it,” Evans says. “There was a need to drive more than just T-posts, so we developed a new model and from there designed the first handle extension kit for taller posts and other customized accessories.”
Continued on p20
When asked what advice she would give to someone just entering the industry, Evans says being informed is the only way you can help and always remember there is more than one way to get something accomplished.

NOVEMBER | Brent Turner, President | Wood Defender
For more than two decades, Brent Turner has helped build the reputation of Wood Defender into one of the most trusted names in the industry. What began as a hands-on role in the early days of the company evolved into a career defined by innovation, customer relationships and a deep understanding of what it takes to protect and preserve wood in the fencing industry.
“Our stain product started as my dad’s idea, and he hired me to complete and then sell the service. It took nearly a dozen tries to find the right formula for a stain that could be applied with a single flood coat that soaks into the wood, leaving a uniform finish without runs, dips or lap marks, ” Turner says. “Now 30 years later we’re constantly innovating to make sure we stay on top. From environmental concerns and regulations to customer expectations, we are maintaining, exceeding, and even setting industry standards.”
His career reflects a simple but powerful philosophy: when you take pride in the details, the finish always shows it. “Don’t chase quick wins, stay consistent, take the time to do the right thing.”

Common Points of Access Control Failure
Access control systems manage who can enter or exit a facility, when they can do so, and through which portal. While access control plays a key role in perimeter security, relying on this method alone can create vulnerabilities.
In high-risk commercial environments, access control-only approaches often fall short. A recent study on property crime across the United States reported nearly 7 million incidents of property crime the previous year. Motor vehicle theft increased by 12.6% in that time. In many cases, the root cause of these crimes is thieves gaining access to properties and buildings.
Failures often stem from outdated systems, poor oversight or inconsistent processes. These breakdowns can expose access control vulnerabilities that threaten safety, operations, and profitability.
The team of perimeter security experts at AMAROK offers insight into the most common points of access control failure:
Human Error. Even well-trained employees can make mistakes. Granting access based on familiarity or verbal requests, skipping identification (ID) checks, or misidentifying personnel can all lead to unauthorized entries. These errors often occur under pressure or during shift changes. Employees assigned to monitor access points without formal training on protocols, escalation steps or system functions are also more prone to human error. Unclear guidance or high staff turnover can also result in inconsistent procedures, increasing the risk of mistakes.
Weak Password Policies. Access control systems that rely on easily guessable passwords or PINs can be compromised by reused credentials, shared logins or infrequent updates. Without requirements for complexity, like two-factor authentication or expiration, these credentials can remain vulnerable for long periods. When access credentials are rarely reviewed, problems occur. Old credentials
remain active when employees leave or roles shift. Contractors, vendors or temporary staff often retain access longer than necessary, increasing system clutter.
Software
Vulnerabilities
Unpatched, outdated software or unsupported platforms may have bugs or compatibility issues that interfere with access functionality. When firmware updates or security patches are delayed, employees and stakeholders can find issues with authentication or logging. Should access control not sync with other tools like scheduling software, human resource (HR) systems or surveillance feeds, manual intervention is required. These issues slow response times and increase the administrative burden on staff managing entry points.
Inadequate Monitoring
Facilities without active monitoring can’t verify access events in real time. If a badge doesn’t scan or a gate malfunctions, the issue may go unnoticed and can lead to systems failing in detecting unauthorized access attempts. Gaps in visibility often occur during after-hours operations or shift transitions. Sites with static access rules may also struggle to adapt to evolving operational demands. A rigid schedule can block authorized personnel after hours or grant access to areas no longer in use.
30" 43" 55"
Risks of Access Control Failure. Access control isn’t just about who gets in — it’s about what’s at stake when the system breaks down. Inadequate or inconsistent access control can expose a facility to a range of costly consequences that affect people, operations, and reputation. These risks highlight why reliable access management is critical to any commercial operation:
• Data breaches: Access control failures can expose sensitive areas that house customer records, financial data or operational systems. In industrial environments, compromised control rooms or servers can impact system integrity.
• Financial losses: Unauthorized access leads to theft, vandalism, or operational disruption. Equipment damage or loss can stall production, increasing replacement costs, and repeated incidents can raise insurance premiums, shrinking margins.
• Reputation damage: Frequent breaches or poorly managed access control undermine confidence in site security. Customers, stakeholders and employees may hesitate to trust a facility that cannot manage its perimeter.
• Legal consequences: When unauthorized access results in injury, data loss or theft, businesses can face legal scrutiny. Regulatory bodies can impose fines for noncompliance, especially if access policies fall short of industry standards.
How Multi-Layered Security Addresses These Vulnerabilities. A welldesigned Gate Access Control system helps eliminate the gaps that lead to operational and security failures. However, access control is only effective when it’s part of a multi-layered security strategy that starts with the perimeter.
Electric Fencing
An electric fence is the first line of defense, serving as an intimidating barrier that clearly defines property lines. For example, AMAROK’s Electric Guard Dog™ Fence delivers a safe but memorable 7,000-volt pulsed shock every 1.3 seconds when a would-be thief attempts to breach it. Electric fencing also comes with visible signage, adding a psychological deterrent to the first layer of a multi-layered security strategy.
Video Surveillance
Adding video surveillance gives stakeholders visibility in vulnerable areas and perimeter zones. While the cameras alone don’t prevent crime, video footage supports faster response from the authorities and aids investigations. Products like AMAROK’s FORTIFEYE™ commercial video surveillance and monitoring integrate with the electric fence. Should the fence alarm trigger, cameras will turn to where the intrusion attempt takes place, alerting the monitoring team for verification.
Gate Access Control
Controlled Gate Access Control points log site entries and exits. Options like gate controls, badge access, audit trails, license plate recognition and AI cameras allow stakeholders to restrict access by role, location or time. This flexibility lowers the risk of access control-only failures while boosting internal accountability, making it especially useful for logistics, trucking, manufacturing and other high-traffic sites.
Combining Gate Access Control and electric fencing offers a strong return on investment by eliminating the need for on-site security guards, saving companies thousands of dollars annually.
AMAROK has helped over 8,000 commercial businesses with turnkey perimeter security needs. Learn more at AMAROK.com.
Fortress Building Products and Mountain Deck
Steel Deck Framing
Seasoned industry experts, Joe Frith, owner of Mountain Deck, and Mike Fredy, business development manager at Fortress Building Products, recently hosted a Master Class workshop in Portola Valley, California, for contractors to learn how to frame a deck with steel. Workshop participants had the opportunity to roll up their sleeves and install the Evolution steel deck framing system from Fortress Building Products under expert guidance.
“Your first deck with any new system can feel intimidating,” Frith says. “Attending a Master Class workshop lets you see how it’s done, try it yourself, and realize that framing with steel can actually be easier than building with wood.”
In addition to providing hands-on training, the peerled, collaborative approach of the Fortress® Master Class workshop fosters professional networking, giving contractors the opportunity to exchange best deck building practices and gain confidence to make the switch to steel framing.
“Contractors leave these workshops with practical skills and the ability to position themselves as experts in fire-safe, longlasting deck construction. That is a real advantage for business growth,” Frith says.
For many contractors, especially those living and working in California, steel’s fire-resistance property is a particularly compelling advantage. “Burning embers are a leading cause of wildfire spread. An old, dried-out wooden deck bolted to a home is essentially a bonfire attached to the house,” Frith says. Moreover, many local codes under California’s Chapter 7A now prohibit combustible materials within five feet of a home. “Steel framed decks are noncombustible, fire-resistant and ignition resistant. The framing material helps contractors build safer, more resilient outdoor living spaces while staying code compliant.”
Additionally, Frith highlighted the advantages of steel deck framing as customers increasingly demand bigger and better outdoor living spaces complete with today’s sought after amenities. “Steel deck framing
offers unmatched strength, durability and long-term value,” he says. Steel deck framing stands up to the damaging effects of moisture and extreme weather conditions. It will not split, warp and deteriorate after exposure to the elements. “Once you understand these advantages, there’s no excuse for building decks the way they did hundreds of years ago.”
One of the main objectives of the advanced training session was to show participants that framing decks with steel is not as complicated as some think. No specialized tools required, the interlocking joist and ledger system provides straightforward installation that looks and feels like working with wood. Many top builders, including Frith, argue that using a steel deck framing system is actually easier than working with the time-honored building material. “Outside of simple cutting, you just screw the parts together. That cuts down labor costs, improves construction efficiency and leaves you with a deck substructure that will last for decades.”

DoorBird Announces Integration with Telecor’s eSeries Communication Platform
DoorBird, a global leader in IP video door intercom systems, has announced a new integration with Telecor’s eSeries Public Address and Intercom Solution. This collaboration brings together DoorBird’s advanced IP video technology with Telecor’s robust communication platform, delivering a unified solution for smarter, more secure facility access and communication. DoorBird’s high-definition IP video door stations are trusted worldwide in residential, commercial, and institutional settings. With real-time video and audio communication, remote access control, and seamless integration capabilities, DoorBird devices enhance entryway security and user convenience.
Telecor’s eSeries is a next-generation, ethernet-based communication system widely adopted in K–12 schools and other critical facilities. It supports both routine communications—such as classroom-to-office calls and scheduled announcements—and emergency notifications. The system can be deployed as a full IP solution or integrated with existing analog infrastructure, offering a flexible and cost-effective upgrade path.
Through this integration, when a visitor presses the call button on a DoorBird device, an alert is instantly triggered on the Telecor eSeries visual console. Staff can view a live video feed, communicate directly, and initiate predefined actions such as unlocking doors—all from a single, unified interface. This streamlined workflow enhances situational awareness and strengthens front entrance security.
The integrated solution complies with key regulatory standards, including FCC and IC, and is engineered for reliable performance in both indoor and outdoor environments.
“We’re excited to partner with Telecor to deliver smarter, more connected entryway solutions,” says Matthew Fullford, integration development manager. “With Telecor’s extensive experience in campus and facility communication systems, this integration creates a powerful combination of intuitive access control and real-time communication that enhances security and streamlines response.”

Diamond Mowers’ Mini Brush Cutter Pro X Earns Three Industry Awards
Multiple Honors Affirm that Big Performance Can Come in a Small Package
Diamond Mowers’ Mini Brush Cutter Pro X, a powerful land-clearing attachment for stand-on skid steers, has been recognized with three top industry awards celebrating product innovation and performance excellence. The versatile attachment was named among the winners of OPE+’s “Twenty for 2025 New Product Awards,” selected for Rental Magazine’s “2025 Editor’s Choice Awards,” and earned a spot on Equipment Today’s “2025 Contractors’ Top 50 New Products” list.
“We are honored by this recognition and pleased by the positive response to this new offering,” says Nate Cleveringa, vice president of engineering and product management at Diamond Mowers. “These awards underscore the impact our Mini Brush Cutter Pro X is making across multiple sectors of the industry. From contractors to rental houses, professionals are discovering its ability to clear land faster, reduce manual labor and maximize the value of compact equipment.”
Redefining Stand-on Performance
Launched earlier this year, the Mini Brush Cutter Pro X is modeled after Diamond’s industry-leading Brush Cutter Pro X and engineered specifically for the mini skid steer market. Its spindle-driven blade system provides 25% more cutting capacity than standard models, enabling operators to slice through dense brush, thick vegetation, and trees up to 5-inches in diameter. The 42inch cutting width makes the compact attachment ideal for landscaping, lot reclamation, trail maintenance, and vegetation control in tight environments.
Constructed with commercial-grade steel that’s 25% thicker than competitive models, the Mini Brush Cutter Pro X also features hydraulic hose protection, castle nut fasteners for blade security, and optional universal safety guarding that help maximize reliability, safety, and long-term usability.
About the Awards

Why Steel Fencing is a Smart Choice for Security
When a customer requests a fence to keep their property secure and their belongings safe, they’re looking to their contractor for guidance. And although there are many materials to choose from, Linsey Ebuen, owner and chief sales officer of Vantage Fence Supply, says, “Steel is hands down one of the best options out there. It’s strong, low maintenance, and built to last.”
Vantage, based in Sacramento, California, is rapidly gaining momentum across the United States and Canada as a trusted supplier of premium steel fencing systems and value-driven manufacturing solutions. Their product lineup includes VICTORY U-Channel steel fencing, SecureBond face-welded steel panels, and ColorSTEEL fire-resistant privacy steel fencing—giving contractors multiple high-performance options for any project.
Ebuen offers five solid reasons why steel fencing might be the right choice for your next security fence project:
1. Tough as Nails (But Way Prettier). Steel fencing is incredibly durable. It doesn’t rot like wood, and it won’t warp or crack over time. Plus, most steel fences come with protective coatings that help prevent rust and weather damage. That means you can count on it to stand strong for years with minimal upkeep.
2. Serious Security. If keeping unwanted guests out is a top priority, steel fencing has you covered. Whether you’re protecting your home, business, or valuables, steel fencing creates a strong barrier. Pair it with electronic gates, swipe card access, or security cameras for an extra layer of protection. Most of the time, just having a solid fence is enough to make intruders think twice.
3. No More Parking Free-for-Alls. Got a big property? Then you know how quickly parking can turn into chaos. Steel fencing helps create clearly defined parking spaces, keeping things organized and preventing cars from being parked all over the place. It’s a simple way to add order and make your property look more polished and professional.
4. Extra Peace of Mind. Beyond security, steel fencing gives you a real sense of safety. It keeps kids and pets in, keeps trespassers out, and— unlike wood or vinyl—it won’t ignite or fuel a fire. With a sturdy, fireresistant barrier protecting your property, you can relax a little more knowing your home is truly safeguarded.
5. Low Maintenance, High Reward. Unlike wood or other materials, steel fencing doesn’t require constant upkeep. No repainting, no worrying about termites, and no rotting boards to replace. Just a quick rinse with water and a cloth now and then is enough to keep it looking sharp all year long.
“If your fence project requires an extra layer of safety and security—with the added benefit of being aesthetically beautiful—then Vantage steel fencing will deliver that and more,” says Ebuen. “Our goal is to provide fence contractors and distributors with highquality, well-priced options they can count on for every job.”

TimberTech Unveils New Privacy Screen and Railing Options to Revolutionize Outdoor Living
TimberTech®, a brand that's part of the James Hardie portfolio and the leading manufacturer of premium composite and PVC decking and railing solutions, has announced the launch of two new innovative products designed to enhance outdoor living spaces: Advantage Rail™ and Impression Privacy Screen™. In addition, Fulton Rail® from the TimberTech metal railing lineup is now available for shipment nationwide.
These new offerings strengthen the brand's commitment to combining superior aesthetics with advanced functionality for both homeowners and contractors alike. The product lineup addresses growing market demands for streamlined railing installation processes and enhanced privacy solutions as homeowners create backyard retreats.
Advantage Rail from TimberTech is a revolutionary new composite railing option that offers unmatched installation efficiency for contractors with its patent-pending SPEEDLoc Technology. A snap-on bottom rail and sideloading balusters allow for faster installation while maintaining optimal baluster spacing. Advantage Rail requires 25% fewer fasteners than leading competitors, streamlining installation for professionals and reducing time on the job. For homeowners, its design features a premium wood-look with hidden hardware, rattle-free construction and color-matched fasteners plus a 25-year limited product warranty and 25-year fade and stain warranty, all at a competitive price point.
Impression Privacy Screen is a first-of-its-kind privacy screen solution that provides both decorative screening and functional railing together in one system, offering homeowners a seamless look. An expansion of TimberTech's existing award-winning railing line, Impression Rail Express®, Impression Privacy Screen is engineered to work together as a unified system and has been wind-load tested for durability so homeowners can have the cohesive look they want with the performance they need. Its sleek aluminum design complements a range of outdoor styles and is noncombustible, which is increasingly important in wildfire-prone regions.
Fulton Rail is now available nationwide after its successful regional release earlier this year. This steel railing expands the TimberTech metal railing offering, bringing enhanced fire-resistant solutions to outdoor spaces across the country. Fulton Rail is constructed for durability, offering homeowners
and contractors a reliable, non-combustible product that easily fits modern outdoor living needs.
"Our latest product launches underscore what the TimberTech brand stands for – customerdriven innovation," says Jon Skelly, president – AZEK/TimberTech residential. "Advantage Rail and Impression Privacy Screen aren't just new additions, they're intentional investments in what our customers have asked for: products that are easier to install, offer design versatility, and perform for years to come. Every innovation we deliver is grounded in listening to our customers and raising the standard for premium outdoor living products."
All three products will begin shipping in January 2026, with nationwide availability through TimberTech's established dealer and distribution network. The launches coincide with the company's exhibition at the International Builders' Show in February 2026, where the products will be featured prominently.
The expanded TimberTech portfolio reinforces its leadership position in the outdoor living market by offering solutions that combine durability, premium aesthetics, resilience, and installation efficiency.

Management Corner CLEAR THE CLUTTER, CLEAR THE MIND: A Fresh Start for 2026
As the year winds down, the urge to “reset” is almost instinctive. We clean out closets, purge old files and promise ourselves a fresh start after the holidays. But in business, clutter isn’t just the stack of reports piled on your desk, it’s also the mental load we carry that slows our momentum and steals our focus.
December is the perfect month to take inventory of both.
Start with the physical clutter.
Look around your workspace. Every item in your line of sight takes up cognitive space, even if you don’t notice it consciously. Studies continue to show that physical clutter leads to reduced productivity, increased stress, and difficulty focusing. Before the new year hits, take one hour to clear the clutter. Toss papers you don’t need, recycle old folders, wipe the whiteboard that still shows ideas from August and donate unused office supplies. That stack of unused coffee mugs? Keep one. The rest are ready for a new home.
A clean workspace signals closure and gives your brain room to relax. It creates visual space for new ideas. When January 2 arrives, you’ll sit down at a desk that’s ready to support your momentum into the new year, not remind you of unfinished business.
Then declutter the mental load.
Clutter isn’t always physical. Mental clutter is the noise we carry: the ideas we don’t write down, the tasks we haven’t prioritized, the emails we’ve flagged but never returned to. End-of-year mental clutter has a sneaky way of following us home, interrupting rest and making it harder to enjoy the holidays.
Try this three-step reset:
1. Dump it. Write down everything that’s bouncing around in your head: work projects, follow-ups, goals, worries, etc., on one sheet of paper. Getting it out of your head gives you control over it.
2. Decide. For each item, label it: Do it, delegate it, or delete it. Some tasks don’t belong in your brain – or your calendar.
3. Date it. Assign deadlines or scheduled check-ins for what remains. Mental clutter often comes from uncertainty. A simple date dissolves that.
Protect space for what matters in 2026.
Clutter, whether physical or mental, carries emotional weight. When we remove what no longer serves us, we make room for what will. A fresh desk and a clear mind are more than aesthetic choices; they’re strategic decisions.
Close out the year with intention. Tie a bow and wrap up 2025 by clearing the clutter and protecting your focus.
A cleaner space and a calmer mind aren’t just refreshing, these will be your competitive advantage in 2026.

2026 is Already Here –Is Your Company Ready?
by Mark Levin, CAE, CSP executive vice president, Chain Link Fence
We just completed an incredibly successful 65th CLFMI Annual Meeting in Phoenix. We had great turnout - over 68% of all CLFMI member companies were represented, a compliment to both our beautiful setting and to the two years of the leadership of our CLFMI President, Bill Peterson with Richard’s Fence in Akron, Ohio.
I really did not think there was any way for us to keep up the quality of speakers we had at our 2025 Summer Meeting in Montreal, but I was wrong. Since the theme of all of our Annual Meetings is preparing for the next year, we could not have had four better speakers than Dr. Matthew Kidder, our chief economist; Ken Hansen, the chief political reporter for the Arizona Republic; Rex Stepp, the director of business development for McCarthy Building Companies, one of the largest contractors in the U.S.; and Mia Montoya, construction engineer and fencing specialist for McCarthy.
Each of these speakers was outstanding in their presentations, and the topic they all focused on was the same: 2026 is going to be an amazingly intense, uncertain, and important year.
I know you think this is the same message speakers deliver every year, and usually they do say some version of that. But here are some of the things they told CLFMI members which underscore the impact of 2026 in their respective areas of expertise:
In reviewing his updates and forecasts for the chain link industry, Dr. Kidder pointed out that due to the federal government shut down, 3rd quarter information was not available to include in his forecasting models. In addition, his inability to include economic trend
information made it even more difficult to give CLFMI members accurate details for measuring their company’s performance versus the marketplace. Even though we will be able to get the 3rd quarter reports when the government reopens, he noted, we will be (already are!) well into the 4th quarter and anxious to plan for 2026. He said this continued uncertainty is becoming the norm, unfortunately, and makes it hard to do accurate forecasting, which makes it hard to do effective planning for our companies.
Ken Hansen’s information-filled and balanced political report was a realistic look at both the 2025 off-year election returns and the upcoming 2026 mid-term elections. Among the observations he made in response to member questions:
• The government shutdown will not have much lingering impact on the 2026 elections.
• The public’s memory is short, and a year from now only those directly impacted by the shutdown, mainly those in the Maryland, DC and Virginia region, will make it a factor in determining who they vote for in 2026 (regardless of who they blame for the shutdown).
• The off-year election results indicate that 2026 should be the Democrats’ best chance to regain control of the House, but the Republicans will likely hold the Senate. Even Democratic control of only one house of Congress will change the dynamic in Washington and make things harder for the administration to continue getting legislation passed.
• The administration’s tariff policies will remain a source of uncertainty in the new year. They can directly affect the fence industry in the manufacturing and supply sectors and reduce demand for secondary services such contractors and their suppliers.
Rex Stepp detailed the scope of the work McCarthy performs through the U.S. He noted that their clients include many of the owners/ developers of major energy facilities across the country, both in the renewal fuels and traditional source fuels industries. Regarding the outlook on future energy projects, he expressed confidence that renewable fuels will continue to grow at a steady, if not spectacular rate.
Mia Montoya followed up with a discussion about McCarthy’s perimeter security policies and guidelines. She said her company functioned as an advisor to their clients and based their perimeter security contracting on what the clients tell them are their priorities on the project. Those priorities often include such things as overall project costs; protection of wildlife, flora, or other environmental concerns; and required anti-theft and access capabilities.
In addition to excellent speakers, the meeting featured the selection of a unique pickleball court project in Calgary, Alberta, as the recipient of the 2026 Les Grube Design Award. Contractors will get a chance to see the details of the project during FenceTech ’26 in Indianapolis. CLFMI’s Technical and Marketing Committee are also putting their finishing touches on the 3rd consecutive CLFMI profit-builder educational program for FenceTech.
It is sometimes hard to concentrate on the next year when you have projects to finish right now, along with year-end goals to achieve. Based on what the chain link fence manufacturers heard in Phoenix, 2026 is not just going to be “more of the same.” It is going to be a slew of important things, with the increased pressure of uncertainty, election-year distractions, and ongoing economic concerns.
Have a safe and happy holiday season, and don’t forget to get some rest. You are going to need it to deal with 2026.
As executive vice president of Chain Link Fence Manufacturers Institute for 38+ years, Mark Levin is also an author and avid promoter of the fence industry. Growing in commercial marketplace while dealing with a critical labor shortage.
by Robert A. Miller, PSP, CDT, CSI Imperial Professional Consulting Services
In my last article, I reviewed the commercial construction workforce, including the fence sector, is experiencing a significant demographic shift. This month, we offer some strategies for dealing with a critical labor shortage.
Regardless of your politics, beliefs or standing on current events, we have a huge problem in the United States right now with a significant shortage of skilled workers. And that hits hard for the fence industry. Our industry has been historically challenged with attracting quality workers to our trade. Other trades offer free training, structured hours, and often work inside a building during the construction process. Fence installers are often self-taught, work seasonal hours and must deal with whatever challenges mother nature throws at them each day.
The scale of the problem is large. Some analysts estimate there is a need for almost ½ million new workers in the trades in 2025, driven by record spending for new construction, infrastructure and new manufacturing projects. These shortages have a significant impact on the economy with project delays, increased costs, and, perhaps worst of all, compromised safety as thinner teams rush to complete projects with workers that lack experience.
So, what can you do immediately to attract more workers to your company as you grow into commercial work?
1) Improve the work conditions within your company. Offer more flexibility, better worklife balance, and clear path for advancement. New workers are looking for those companies who are considerate of these needs.
2) Offer enhanced safety and wellness programs. Make sure your team is equipped with the most current safety programs. If you do not have a written safety program, then write one now. You will not be able to grow in the commercial markets without it! One company I work with turned an old office space into a gym, allowing workers to work out before or after work, including a stock of drinks and snacks. Little things can be a difference maker for getting new people on board.
3) Invest in modern tools and equipment. Make sure the tools are the most up to date and the training to use those tools readily available. Many tool providers offer free on demand training for using their products properly.
4) Offer continuous learning and training. In general, I don’t think anyone wants to get a job as a laborer for the next 30 years. The promise of entering the skilled workforce needs to include a roadmap for advancement. Whether opportunities to grow within the sales team, advance to foreman, or take on more technical roles, you can grow your company by growing your workforce. As the commercial fence industry evolves, you are going to need a workforce that understands the complexity of installing barriers systems, intrusion detection products, and all the other new technology and products that are making up commercial fence installations.
5) Embrace diversity. I said this in my last article, and I will say it again: The industries deficit of skilled labor can undoubtedly be filled by women, minorities and disadvantaged workers.
The challenge of finding and keeping a skilled workforce is not going to go away any time soon. Is it up to you to make change and use that change to grow your business. Your future success in commercial fence will assuredly be measured by how you navigate these challenges and establish the most skilled and capable workforce in the industry.
Come back in two months to finish the series with how to grow in commercial work while our industry is undergoing a technological transformation.

Quality Service Brings Long-Term Success
Those on the outside may think owning and growing a business is glamorous. They see the current building, the staff, the equipment and the profits. What they don’t see are the startups. The small beginnings, the ever-present worry, the dreams and the everyday decisions that can either make it or break it.
Fence News honors those who put their hat in the self-employment ring and built their business one small step at a time.
Good Shepherd Fence Company began with a simple belief: people deserve a fence company they can trust; one that values craftsmanship, integrity, and doing the job right. In 1996, co-owner and founder, Chad Barnes, started the business out of his home garage, installing residential wood, chain link, and vinyl fencing. With only a small team, long hours and plenty of learning moments, the company worked hard to earn every customer’s confidence.
“From the very beginning, the goal wasn’t just to build fences. It was to build relationships, operate with honesty and become a company people could truly rely on,” says Shane Catton, managing partner and co-owner of Good Shepherd Fence. “Those early years laid the foundation for the reputation we have today and continue to grow and strengthen. We proved our work ethic and gained the trust of our community one project at a time.”
As word spread about the quality and reliability of Good Shepherd’s work, the company expanded into commercial and industrial fencing, developing specialized crews and capabilities. Today, Good Shepherd Fence is proud to be known as Indiana’s most trusted fence company.
“Our work now spans everything from residential properties to large commercial sites, schools, athletic facilities, HOAs and custom projects,” Catton says. “Every year we aim to raise the bar with better training, better tools, and stronger warranties. We’re not just installing fences—we’re providing security, confidence, and peace of mind. Our lifetime craftsmanship warranty, along with trusted partners like D&D Technologies, Homeland Vinyl, Digger Specialties Aluminum, and others, ensures our customers always receive the best. We’ve grown, but our values remain the same.”
Catton attributes the company’s success to a guiding principle of service and stewardship. “We’ve built our reputation by honoring our word and standing behind everything we do. Our team genuinely cares about the craft, and customers can feel the difference when people take pride in their work.”
When asked what advice he would share with new business owners, Catton points to people and discipline. “Invest in your relationships, internally and externally, and reinvest in your business early. Growth comes from doing the right things consistently, even when no one is watching.”
Since reincorporation in 2019, Team GSFC is now lead by co-owners Shane Catton, Chad Barnes and Jacob Barnes. Focused on technology, tools, team member development and innovation, Good Shepherd continues to expand its commercial, access control, sports facility, netting and municipal divisions, as well as partnerships with schools, HOAs, parks and recreation departments. “We’re focused on raising the standard of what a fence company should be, not just in Indiana, but across the industry,” Catton says. “We’re proud of how far we’ve come, and we’re even more excited about what’s ahead. It takes a strong team and community supporting us!”
