Letter From The Editor

Dear Readers,

As the Earth tilts its northern pole towards the sun, we approach the Summer Solstice – and the burst of color and life that warmth and sunshine brings along with it. As we drift into these next few months, we hope you enjoy leisurely days spent with friends and family, and potentially near or distant travel. If you need some ideas about where to go, in this edition we’re exploring cannabis culture from a global perspective, so you may be inspired.

To us here at the magazine, travel is more than getting to see new places. It’s immersing yourself in an experience that encourages growth. Travel allows us to expand our minds, learn, and embrace things that may be foreign to us. To summarize a quote by Samuel Clemens, “Broad, wholesome, charitable thoughts cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.”

ln the following pages, you will read about the slow road towards acceptance of legal cannabis in the United Kingdom by Dave Barton. On pages 15-25, we explore the sprawling landscape of Montana and its vibrant cannabis community, as detailed in our main feature by our favorite traveling cannabis writer, Veronica Castillo.

This June, we get acquainted with new cities and cultures in articles by our newest contributors. You'll learn about the weed scene in Saigon, Vietnam, written by Dominic Vega. We spend 36 hours in New York City with Hannah Gershowitz, and consider France’s cultural influence on cannabis by Kristine Freeman.

Prepare yourself a refreshing infused Lemon Drop Martini in a recipe by Tamara Anderson, while you read about Renae Blackhall and her cannabis company Summus in the Caribbean island of St. Vincent & the Grenadines. If you catch the travel bug while reading, follow its lead to your next destination. We’ll meet you there, joint in hand.

With Gratitude, Melanie

Cannarchy In The UK:

In this second p relationship betwe Dave Barton, co-f thermidor – a creative agency –country’s comple here’s favourite pla of the British Hem

In Modern Brita and at worst y outrage While h ‘skunk’ – remain the British public the world’s bigges Little Englanders clutch scornfully the ‘Evil Weed’.

But a new type o across Britain – in open-minded, he emerging here. B mindful, intention legitimise ‘therape

Or are we Brit indulgence that o compete with the consume?

Big Drink En

Let’s start with favoured UK vic well-documented worse In fact, alcohol-related deaths reached a 20 year high in 2020: right when everyone was stuck at home during the pandemic (which itself negates the argument that drinking’s purely a social activity)

It’s not just lager; craft beer is becoming more popular here too – microbreweries seem to be cropping up all over the place Spirits have always been a staple of a British night out too: gin, in particular, seems to be enjoying a more sophisticated renaissance right now

We haven’t even mentioned wine, whisky, and vodka yet (until now); or the assortment of flavoured boozy concoctions that promise ‘impact’ over ‘enjoyment’. We probably don’t need to. But that rationale in itself tells much about why skunk has such an impact, where cannabis is concerned.

From Skunk To CBD

Putting Out The Fire

And then there’s smoking. Honestly, it’s pretty rare to see people with cigarettes nowadays. The 2007 public health initiative that saw smokers ostracised to the outdoors, was a relief to many British pub-goers – who no longer had to endure the indignity of their fine threads stinking like an ashtray after an evening on the pop.

However, 15+ years on and it seems public opinion still favours further restrictions on tobacco use; with government policy apparently lagging behind on these issues Yup, it’s clear smoking really isn’t cool anymore But that said, noone’s going to get arrested for sparking up a Marlboro Light – although the secondhand smoke is far more damaging However, should the smell of a combusting cannabis joint waft across to your neighbour’s perfectly pruned garden on a summer’s evening, then they (apparently) have every right to alert the police

Cessation Sensation

A lot of us Brits (myself included) have tried pretty hard to quell their tobacco cravings; which is undoubtedly why vaping has dutifully presented itself as a viable alternative over the last decade or so But it’s not without its own issues

Often marketed as a ‘smoking cessation’ option in healthcare settings – with pharmacy shelves brimming over with them – the use of e-cigarette devices is hugely popular here in Britain. Head to any social setting and you’re almost certain to be engulfed in a cloud of Mojito-Watermelon-Basil vapour – probably emanating from a neon-coloured, sweet-smelling, nicotine salt/e-liquid device.

But the backlash has already started The ubiquitous Elf Bar is facing a blanket boycott from major UK supermarkets, following a trading standards violation against the 600 series device (which have been found to contain more that 50% more than the legal limit for nicotine e-liquid) And that’s even before we get into concerns about appealing to kids, single use devices, and links to chronic lung disease

And yet, when it comes to medical cannabis, qualified healthcare professionals are advising patients to vape (rather than smoke) their prescribed flower – which is, more often than not, issued under the cultivar name –which seems totally at odds with everything else we’ve been told.

Naughty, Naughty…

So – what’s a British cannabis advocate to do? Well, if we were to consider all of these issues with a sincerity that’s characteristic of intoxication, we’d quickly conclude that none of this matters to your casual cannabis consumer.

Why? Because – I’d wager – a lot of British people like the fact that street cannabis is illegal: both Little Englanders and habitual tokers Its status as a Class B ‘drug’ cements its standing as ‘divisive’ Even if we knew nothing of its medicinal properties, we know it can’t be worse than any of the legal vices at our disposal

We *know* drinking excessively is bad We also know that smoking, vaping, and substance inhalation are not conducive to a healthy lifestyle We’ve also been told all of these things about cannabis too; but the puckish part of the British psyche embraces the naughtiness that comes with all of it.

If we truly want a recreational market to flourish here in Britain, then we need a way to legitimise cannabis; and so far, it seems that the stigma isn’t being suppressed by our medical market.

A Hit On The High Street

While you don’t have to venture too far down your average UK high street to get a whiff of skunk (the name stands for good reason); another, much more socially palatable, kind of cannabis is clear and present in pretty much every health and wellness store

I’m talking about CBD of course; which – provided it contains just the tiniest trace of THC (less than the presumed 0.2%) – is widely accessible in all of its various incarnations: oils, capsules, gummies, balms, sublinguals, transdermals, cosmetics, beverages. CBD flower, however, remains prohibited.

But is it just hype? No sir/mam. According to research commissioned by the Association for the Cannabinoid Industry, the UK’s CBD market was valued at £690 million in 2021, up from £314 million in 2019; making Britain the world’s second biggest consumer market for CBD, after the US

While it’s easy to assume that sales are being driven by the more affluent ‘yoga set’ for whom mindfulness and intentional action are de rigueur; CBD is actually much more mainstream than that: which makes sense, given that it’s used for everything from pain relief to anxiety to sleep

Thriving. Not Surviving.

To round this off, I’d like to say that, as a nation, I reckon the UK would thrive if cannabis were to be legalised recreationally: presuming we get a robustyet-workable framework in place (thanks Germany!) But, right here and now, it feels a long way off

This interplay of public health concerns, illicit activity, and cultural demonisation; set against medical necessity, therapeutic benefit, and destigmatisation are nothing new. But all of these issues have a critical role to play in driving awareness, advocacy, and acceptance of cannabis at large.

Sure, it’s gonna take time for the cannabis cause to evolve into more of a political issue, but right now –despite the best efforts of many patient-led groups (like NORML) and professional trade associations (such the Cannabis Industry Council) – it’s not on anyone’s radar

For now we have the twin Trojan Horses of CBD and medicinal cannabis to contend with openly; while deep within these wooden equine bellies, recreational forces bide their time – waiting to strike But perhaps that’s no bad thing; there’s a lot to get right

Montana's Best Selling

THC Infused Drinks

A’ho to Montana, the United States Treasure State! Big blue skies, enormous snow capped mountains, clear lakes and rivers, and red, green, and yellow landscapes; Montana is a place everyone should witness and experience at least once. They say beauty is subjective, held in the eyes of the beholder; but I now challenge this idea since exploring Montana.

There is no way that any eye, on any living being can look at Montana, and not see absolute beauty Every drive is a scenic one and every bend offers a sight even more marvelous than the one before I’ve heard that the most high created nature to show us perfection; I believe that Montana is nature’s runway

Look around and you’ll witness recognition and respect of the original people of Montana Listen and you’ll hear sacred speak Inhale and you’ll pull the scent of pine into your body Touch the soil or the massive boulders and feel the tightness in your body surrender to peace Smoke a Montana grown fat nug and taste the rainbow

It took just two short weeks for me to fall in love with Montana; the spirit, the people, and of course: the cannabis. Journey with me as I take you from Missoula, to Kalispell, to Great Falls, to Bozeman, and to Billings with stops and drive throughs in Flathead Reservation, Blackfeet Country, Big Fork, Whitefish, Helena, and East and West Glacier National Park.

This is the Fat Nugs Under Big Skies Tour with the Traveling Cannabis Writer.

Visiting: Missoula, Kalispell/BigFork, Great Falls/Helena, Bozeman, and Billings

Many people come from overpopulated places where nature has been chopped down for highrises and mansions to be built. These places are where a 10 minute drive is a 40+ minute drive and where food delivery takes an hour or longer because of traffic. I come from one of those places; Montana is not one of those places.

Comparison: Miami-Dade County has over three million residents. This doesn’t include the people there on vacation every day of the year. Just one city, three million people with two area codes. If we group in Broward County so that South Florida as a whole is captured, we are looking at about seven million people and four area codes

The entire state of Montana has about one million people and the entire state uses one area code In a place that has more nature than people, you breathe differently Going to and getting back from work doesn’t have the added stress of two hours of bumper to bumper traffic You don’t have to pay extra charges for priority delivery because there is only a five minute difference between priority and standard

When there is more nature than people, there is less navigating amongst anger, stress, and low vibrational energy Instead there’s more calm, ease, and overall peace

Missoula

What a place! I landed under gray skies and cold temperatures but even in all that gray, I noticed the abundance of nature and various shades of green in the massive mountains surrounding the city. Although Missoula is the second largest city in Montana, the pace is calm and moves with flow, not push.

If you’ve been to Portland, Oregon and loved it then you’ll love Missoula I felt big Portland vibes and energy there It’s like Missoula whispered to me like Portland did: “come as you are, we love you anyway”

Driving around the city, gentrification, though maybe it’s evolution, is taking place Like many places, you can see the construction of new developments and expansions happening. The population is growing and travel into the state is picking up; the first sign of that was the Missoula airport which is currently under construction, but still the best and easiest airport I’ve ever flown in and out of.

Fidelity Diagnostics, where chemistry and compliance meet and test Montana grown and created cannabis products

Owned by Andrew and Melissa, this company started with one machine in less than 1,000 square feet, and grew so much that they now operate out of a massive building with hella machines and computers doing all the things I didn’t pay attention to in class, and they love it! Montana’s new regulation on 10% variance in testing is thanks to Andrew and his supporters that got the bill passed

Tamara and Shanda of Secured Canna Transportation own the largest cannabis logistics com built the company to fill in wholesaling across the state In les owned business in cannabis has moved over 70 metric tons of THC packages, and thousands of pound

-My PJ’s Farm favorite is: Lemon S

I visited Stokes, a cannabis company owned by Andrew, a legacy cultivator who is in love with cultivation, grows delicious nugs, and talked about Montana’s back and forth journey with cannabis legalization. He was honest about what many cultivators experience when a writer/journalist wants to share their stories. Andrew reflected on how cool it is for his work to be recognized, but also explained that it’s not so easy to transition from hiding what you did, to now showing what you do I shared big smiles and laughs while inhaling scents of the beauty grown for us to consume

The Urban Farmer lit up my world. Montana isn’t the first place black and brown people think of when planning a trip. With the racial tensions in history and present day, we tend to go to places we know have a heavy melanated population. When I announced that I was touring Montana, some of my followers expressed concern This is why the Urban Farmer lit me up; on the windows- a huge fist, next to it in big letters “Black Lives Matter” When I walked in, a huge painting of my favorite took up a wall: Lil Wayne! And then more gorgeous art spread around the walls inside Joseph, the owner of Urban Farmer, loves art and it shows This dispensary is more like an art gallery that sells cannabis. -My Urban Farmer favorite is: Tasty Waves cartridges.

Things to See an

massive mountains in nature In April though, that's a bit hard to explore if one is allergic to winter like I am For those that aren’t and seek outdoor exploration; skiing and hiking are very popular things to do and can be done at Pattee Canyon, Rattlesnake Trail, and Lolo Pass

Caras Park in downtown Missoula, off the Clark River is a gorgeous place to catch a vibe and a pretty sunset. Because it’s downtown, it’s the perfect place to walk off dinner and take in Missoula’s beauty Taking a walk down the strip along the Clark River, and listening to the river travel is soul nurturing

If you’re in Missoula around 4/20, always check with the Montana State Hemp & Cannabis Festival and their 420 Block Party; it’s an experience you don’t want to miss I was in attendance this year and had an amazing time!

If ghosts are your thing then visiting Garnet Ghost Town should be on your list of things to see and explore.

Vegan Food an

The vegan scene is a nice one in Missoula. Have you ever had an everything doughnut made vegan and stuffed with creamed cheese? Never have I ever, until Missoula. Veera’s was phenomenal! I had one of the most delicious vegan BLT’s I’ve ever had while dining at Market on Front, and the Green Source made me the best vegan mushroom hot cocoa I ate so good!

What I’ll remember about this drive for the rest of my life, was driving through West Glacier National Park and seeing what I think is the tallest mountain I’ve seen in my life, with a very pointed top. I was mesmerized by it and was sad when it was no longer in view I thought I lost it but then I saw it as the road curved It was the center of attention and in perfect view I never felt so country, my mouth was wide open in shock and in love When I looked at the very top of it, winter was making circles around it, it was like an AI creation

I have never seen winter; and what I mean is, sure I was in winter, could see the snow, and could feel the cold, but I’ve never seen it– the cold, until West Glacier.

I also crossed the Continental Divide on this drive, drove through parts of East Glacier, and traveled through Blackfeet Country; home to North American Indian tribes: Siksika, the Blood, and the Piegan

I was in Great Falls too early to capture its true beauty; the waterfalls. Montana was still frozen during the tour. I booked my stay on the Missouri River and witnessed what many love about Montana being able

The Cannabis Scene

I visited Helena for cannabis, and met up with Alex and Adam to tour and learn about Bloom Montana and Clear Cannabis Inc., and got to experience their compound; it’s like a mini neighborhood Bloom is locally owned and is the largest cannabis provider in the state of Montana Clear Cannabis Inc , also known as The Clear, and The Clear CBD, is a multi-state brand celebrating 10 years this year

The compound was massive: cultivation, extraction, dispensary, and more. I learned so much from my visit there and more about their partnerships/collaborations with other brands Even more, I enjoyed receiving the gift bag which included various Bloom edibles and a delicious wax, the Twax joint, and a couple Clear Cannabis brand cartridges This was the happiest conversation in a conference room I’ve ever had, nothing like my corporate days

-My Bloom and Clear Cannabis favorites are: the Twax joint from Clear and the wax from Bloom

Things to See and Explore

Rivers, falls, dams, museums, and wildlife refuge are amongst the top things to do and explore in this area. I spent all of my free time at the River’s Edge Trail on the Missouri River. But there’s also: Air Park and Electric City Water Park In Helena, the gold camp during the Montana gold rush, visitors can explore: Gates of the Mountains, Mount Helena, Montana Blue Jewel Mine, and the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts

Bozeman

The drive from Helena to Bozeman was fairly quick and with an abundance of colorful rockies standing bold and vibrant This was the drive that made me say “Montana is nature’s runway” Less snow capped mountains filled with trees and other greenery, and much more reds, and purples, and oranges popping out of the big massive boulders. Rivers on one side, creeks on the other, it was gorgeous!

I traveled through East Helena, Three Forks, and Belgrade to get to Bozeman, and arrived right at the start of Downtown’s Restaurant Week

The Cannabis Scene

I spent a day with Alyssa at 710 Montana, a business owned by Stephanie who is loud and proud with posted messages that read: Buy Weed from Women. I visited the location in Bozeman, an old bar that was called the Scoop in Bozeman’s Barmuda Triangle; it’s so classy yet comfortable and inviting.

I visited their greenhouse and outdoor site which is home to 700+ plants, and 1 of 6 licensed outdoor grows in Montana I also visited their indoor cultivation and extraction Another compound filled with passionate people This was my first time seeing how a cultivation facility is cleaned after harvest, getting things ready for planting the next round of 1200 plants totaling 24 strains.

-My 710 Montana favorite: Stephanie, who is the kind of business owner that helps find/provides her employees with affordable housing when available Before moving on to the next location, Collective Elevation reached out to me and asked if I could stop in to pick up a welcome to Montana gift bag they put together for me They gave me some living soil grown magic so fire! My favorite was Ice Cream Cake

Things to See and Explore

Sculptor Park was a great experience; it offers a beautiful quiet and scenic walk. The Bozeman Library is a gem worth visiting, especially the Labyrinth Circle. Bozeman is home to the Museum of the Rockies, American Computer and Robotics Museum, and just outside of Bozeman, Big Sky. I didn’t make it there but everyone talked about how beautiful it and the sights seen from the area are

Vegan Food and Dining

Have you ever had curry fries? I love curry and I’m Caribbean born and raised so, it feels wild that it took Bozeman to show me what I was missing Backyard Burgers got me together; the curry fries bang! I also feasted at Nova Cafe and Jam who have vegan menus and dishes that can be made vegan; so good!

Billings

Located just above Crow Reservation, about two hours north of Wyoming, and along the Yellowstone River is this industrial city with a vibe very different than I experienced in other parts; but equally enjoyed

I couldn’t wait to get to my final stop on the tourBillings! And not because I was over Montana, I love it there! Before I landed in Montana, and throughout my journey, those I’d tell what I’m doing in Montana said things like: “Montana is great but Billings is different”, or “Don’t go to Billings”, or “Billings isn’t as nice as the rest of Montana”. When I got to Billings, it was the warmest place of them all; 72 degrees and sunny and I instantly fell in love. How is that not nice and pretty? Billings was the nicest and prettiest to me for certain; warmed my Floridian blood right up (LOL)!

Frosteez Cannabis Company, freeze dried cannabis, infused ice cream, and the best trail mix I’ve had infused and not. I met with Kianna and Jason, Director of Operations and Director of Cultivation. There was something about Frosteez that made me want to ask them if I could have a work space anywhere under their roof.

Prior to landing in Montana, I was asked about my favorite flavors and plant milk base. When I arrived at Frosteez, I tasted a newly created vegan ice cream with coconut as the base. It was so good and made for me. I was in love. I think I was the final taste tester because after my many reactions, all saying: “this is so good!”; I was told that it’ll be for all vegans because Vee’s Vanilla is launching!

-My Frosteez favorites are: Vee’s Vanilla and FrostDeez Nuts

I visited and met with Isabella and Candace at Elevated Montana and Twisted Biscuit. What a fierce duo of women in cannabis overseeing 10+ locations in Montana- the second largest cannabis provider in the state of Montana. Their energy is unmatched. I toured my very first commercial cannabis kitchen where the biggest variety of edibles I’ve seen are made Cookies, brownies, muffins, and cannabis leaf shaped gummies to name a few While spending time with them, I learned about Isabella’s work beyond Elevate her fight and willingness to go to battle to keep cannabis legal an

Things to See and Explore

I was so happy about the heat that I ma outside while smoking and writing (LOL) Bu plenty to do in Billings: Yellowstone Nation the Rim Rocks, Pictograph State Park, a outside of Billings, Red Lodge

Final Words

These big skies and massive mountains full of treasures have something for everyone. Though the weather wasn’t consistently pleasant, what locals say is in fact true; that within a 4 hour drive, you can enjoy all seasons. Montana gave me the appearance of spring–colorful landscapes with life returning to trees– while sitting in winter in 35 degree temps, looking out into a snow storm in the mountains, with so much white blowing around you can no longer see the mountains, while seeing a clear and flowing river just beneath you and no signs of ice in sight, with the sun shining down on your face feeling like summer

Montana is beautiful and everyone should see it at least once! Go there, get lit, grab up some peace, connect with yourself, take in all of nature's beauty, and then- go home! The kind folks of Montana say that if we keep moving there, they have to keep building, and all these buildings take away from nature and the calmness of the land They love that we love it there, come enjoy it, but don’t move there!

There has always been something mysterious to me about hash It's like it knows secrets in its final expression that the cannabis plant only dreams of Like honey, it stands the test of time Like wine, it improves with age Like cheese, its scent is distinct, despite its infinitesimal varieties Its rich deep aromas, galactic hues, and varied textures have had a hold on me since I can remember. Hash is arguably the truest and purest expression of cannabis there is. Every gram of love and sweat that goes into loving, nurturing, cutting, drying, curing, and sieving that beautiful plant comes to full fruition in the magnificent resin that is left Every aroma and flavour magnified Each colour and texture, a foreshadow of the experience to come There is nowhere for one's work to hide when it comes to hash, and that’s a beautiful thing

Few things rival experiencing a product that gives you that indescribable feeling that is true quality. Something that makes you close your eyes, pause time, throw your head back and just let your senses absorb the moment. Hash is the epitome of this for me. I’ve been making, smoking, and collecting hash since I was 14, and have been obsessed with its process for just as long The more I learn, the more questions I have, but one thing is for sure, and that is that deeply loved cannabis creates beautiful hash

This comes to my review this month, which I’ve done on 1964’s – Lebanese Hash, based out of British Colombia, Canada Typically, when I’m looking for something new at the dispensary, I reach for labels with words like; small batch, craft, organic, regenerative, and other wonderful labels that show us one major thing, which is that a significant amount of care went into it

This premise is why I chose to try out 1964’s hash The first thing that caught my eye, is the company name, which as suspected is a nod to our late patron saint of THC, Dr. Raphael Mechoulam, who originally isolated it in ’64 (Thank you Dr. Mechoulam, we owe you forever) Second is the fact that it’s made in British Colombia, one of my favourite places on earth Lastly were three small phrases on their website; 1 Sun grown, 2 Organic Soil and 3 No artificial inputs From my humble experience, each of these important choices have a huge impact on overall quality. I’m a firm believer that when mother nature is also allowed to fully give her sweet blessing Well this is when the magic happens Time to see what 1964’s – Lebanese Hash has in store

Enjoy the review!

Wet soil, moss, spearmint, dry wood shavings - oak or birch (sweet), cinnamon, white pepper, slightly creamy Hints of clove and fruit Opened/Cut - much sweeter and waxier aroma Spicier in a medicinal smelling sense Herbal in the patchouli, clove, licorice realm Peppery undertones became an overtone Waxy/oily quality = gas with a slight astringent aspect to it. The aroma makes me picture fermented material being openly brewed in a forest in fall.

Typical deep brown/light black exterior with a noticeable sheen Inconsistent color on the exterior Slightly grainy looking interior on the cut Oily appearance on the interior Lacked the temple ball shape that I was expecting and did not have the melt I was looking for As I handled it more, the sheen became more noticeable which was a positive

High end of moderate mouth feel, low end of full bodied. Enjoyable caramel and taffy undertones with an earthy overtone from its aroma Not as musky, but for sure keeps that herb tone, cinnamon, clove Loam/wet soil aspect, pleasant Mint Dairy/milky

AROMA APPEARANCE FLAVOUR EXPERIENCE

Smooth uptake which has a balanced mental effect, slightly leaning towards a more relaxed state Moderate onset with a delayed physical effect, both relaxed but mild The experience was felt for a decent amount of time and was a pleasant one overall It was smooth but could have had a bit more depth to it I felt it was slightly on the fleeting side. Overall, a relatively enjoyable experience.

The Enlightenment of Marie Jeanne I

n 2022 I decided to start a marketing business in the cannabis industry Time came to create a name; ever the romantic, I chose one in a different language The name: FleurAmi, which directly translates to FlowerFriend in French I created the brand identity, the logo, digital assets, and LinkedIn page. And then I panicked. I’m not French What if people didn’t get it?

Entrepreneur anxiety ensued. I knew I chose the name out of lifelong admiration and respect for the language and culture (What initiated my francophile tendencies? Beauty and the Beast was one of my most-watched movies as a child). What I subconsciously knew, but hadn’t yet fully explored, was that there was some sort of synchronicity between both French and cannabis cultures.

Luckily, I love to read, possess a very healthy dose of curiosity, and actually write about cannabis for a (partial) living, so I set out to find out.

I did already have a bit of knowledge around the subject (Does historical fiction count?) I took French in college, and a novel I’d read mentioned the lady salonnieres of France, which led me to my favorite discovery - the Club of the Hashish-Eaters But I’m getting ahead of myself, so spark up un oinj and I’ll start at the beginning

When researching something, one of the best places to begin is the word itself Interestingly enough, the word ‘culture’ originates from a French term of the same name, which in turn originates from the Latin term ‘colere,’ which means to tend, grow, cultivate, and nurture the Earth. There were already some similarities right there Cannabis culture is 1 Obviously dependent on cultivation, 2 Conscious of the environment, and 3 Definitely somewhere that knowledge, practices, and mindsets have grown and flourished. But I knew there had to be more.

The French are known for their food, wine, fashion, art, and overall attitude - that je ne sais quoi. Besides the word, France actually had an impact on what culture referred to Since the 1600s, many other cultures have been inspired by French customs We’ve heard of Paris Fashion Week, right? What about the Enlightenment? That was a time of great change in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries centered around changing philosophies which then changed society - and it was centered in France.

With that, I’d found my hook Did the enlightened just stand by and go along with practices that they didn’t believe in? No - they disrupted the system and changed it. The same goes for cannabis advocates. The French have defined culture in the same way that those in cannabis have had to define (and redefine) culture to change our own history

Cultural pride is another key similarity Pride in French traditions is a well known national value Did you know there are rules for proper greetings in France? And speak to most members of the cannabis world, or just keep reading, and you’ll feel the pride we all share in the fact that we are here to make a difference Another example of strong culture: try holding on to the joint for too long in a smoke sesh

Remember I mentioned Paris Fashion Week? Chanel, Dior, Givenchy, Gaultier! Paris is one of the epicenters of fashion, and as such, what comes out of it has an impact on fashion all over the world and it trickles down to design, including the design of some cannabis products Fashion revolves around seasons; as a matter of fact, part of the requirement of becoming a true haute couture (high fashion, my favorite kind) designer is to present a very specific type of collection every season.

In a similar fashion (see what I did there?), cannabis greatly depends on the seasons, too Although there hasn’t been widespread research, it appears that a majority of cultivators grow buds outdoors, leading to a glorious harvest time for growers and consumers alike. Here in California, that happens in affectionately-termed Croptober. This usually leads to an even better bang-foryour-buck impact on the consumer market for a couple months

And fashion is not the only wildly creative and important type of art to come out of France. There are at least 7 highly valued types of fine art, from painting to dance With all the creative packaging, publications, activations, experiential events, and digital content in the cannabis world, it’s safe to say that art is definitely a value Lots of brands have drawn inspiration from fashion or other types of art, even featuring artists on their packaging and creating their own clothing lines

Food, wine, and the socializing that goes along with it is another part of French culture that mirrors that of weed Raise your hand if you’ve been to an infused dinner or food or beverage tasting, or just got stoned and really savored your meal

Now that you’re thoroughly défoncé from ton oinj (stoned from your joint), let’s take it back a few hundred years to the Age of Enlightenment. When discussing novel, provocative ideas that are largely against those of the people running the country (sound familiar?), what is one to do and where are they to do it? In France during the 1600s and 1700s, you’d get your thoughts out in a salon, and not the kind where you get your hair cut

Fat Nugs Magazine 33
"...it appears that a majority of cultivators grow buds outdoors, leading to a glorious harvest time for growers and consumers alike."

And this brings me to the Club des Hashischins, or the Club of the Hashish-Eaters In the midnineteenth century, for a few years, a group of the “literary and intellectual elite of Paris” held séances at a hotel to explore psychedelic experiences, specifically with hashish Although the thought of famous philosophers and deep thinkers getting faded and trying to talk to ghosts sounds fabulous, a séance is actually just a French term for ‘meeting ’ These meetings had interesting traditions, including wearing specific clothes, drinking hash-infused coffee, and eating edibles, which looked like green jam

Then, they would write about their experiences, some of which included ravenous hunger and hallucinations Notable members include Alexander Dumas, Victor Hugo, and Charles Baudelaire One of the outcomes of this club was the first thorough study by a psychiatrist into the effects of drugs on the central nervous system. Don’t get me started on the endocannabinoid system right now…

Besides being such an interesting fact to learn and a great example of the way these cultures intertwine, the Hash-Eaters Club is also a solid demonstration of the power of people coming together when they believe in something that isn’t fully accepted (use this power for good!). We’re still doing this in our own way nowadays; my 4/20 felt like the updated 2023 version of the club Now pack a bowl, or couler une douille, for this next one

France has one of the highest rates of cannabis consumption in Europe with close to a million daily users, but it has some of the strictest rules, and cannabis is still in fact illegal A limited medical cannabis trial is underway, but it sounds difficult to join. Even so, people in France smoke a lot of hash, which they call le shit (It’s because that’s what it looks like Seriously ) Also, the sale of CBD products and flower was banned for years until it was lifted at the end of 2022, although at the same time, France is the world’s third-largest producer of industrial hemp. Whew.

So again the cultures converge, this time due to seemingly paradoxical realities Weed is illegal in France, but many people use it Weed is federally illegal in the US, but many people use it, though France appears to be much farther behind than we

are in terms of legalization It must be said that even in the face of these facts, there is so much hope The people who make up cannabis culture are driven, clever, compassionate and can truly change the world. I’m excited to be a part of this Age of Enlightenment.

As I break up l’herbe to pack a bowl, I’m inspired by what I’ve learned and grateful for the disruptors that came before And I think I’m going to start a hash club It’s going to be le shit.

My First Encounter

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, though that's what the city was renamed when captured by the North Vietnamese troops in 1975, it's still referred to as Saigon to this day Home to over ten million people, it's a city that's in constant motion, constantly changing The streets are flooded with people on motorbikes, honking and going in all directions, masterfully moving together like schools of fish.

Every inch of the sidewalk is taken up with street vendors filled with fantastic food stalls; stall after stall of giant pots, stirring a million ingredients combining to make one bowl of something aromatic and incredible Over here, it's all go, all the time It's loud, it's chaotic, and I love it

War, Ho Chi Minh, or even a good bowl of Pho are the first things that cross your mind when you think of Vietnam However, regarding all the beautiful things this incredible country offers, cannabis probably doesn’t shoot to the top of the list And nor should it, given that Asia hasn’t been known for its relaxed outlook on mind-altering substances

Though an exact timeline is unclear, it’s believed that cannabis was introduced to Southeast Asian countries (including Vietnam) in the 16th century and was traditionally used for medicinal purposes Cannabis gained popularity when the US troops entered Vietnam in 1965, and was then quickly condemned and made illegal by 1968 Though it was deemed unlawful, cannabis has been in use since the 1970s to the present day here – And the lenient outlook towards cannabis may surprise you.

How I learned just how lenient the view on Cannabis is here in Saigon took place in a bar called "TNR " A crowded, graffiti-covered, Hip-Hop thumping little dive bar comprised of expats and backpackers.

At the time, I was a backpacker and new to Saigon, so I found myself occupying a bar stool here. I met a fellow backpacker, and we began drinking and talking. In the middle of our conversation, he pulled out a pack of rolling papers from his Indiana Jones-style satchel.

Given that it's common for many travelers to roll their cigarettes, I wasn't too put off by this It wasn't until he pulled out what looked like his entire month's supply of weed and put it on the bar that I felt quite stunned I looked around at the bartenders and fellow patrons, and no one so much as batted an eye

He then pulled out a grinder and proceeded to break up the weed using the bar as his surface Then, finally, he rolled up and began puffing away in the bar My mind was officially blown And I knew right then and there that the outlook on cannabis here in Saigon was much different than I previously thought

The Laws, On Paper

When you think of Asia and its strict drug enforcement policies, you think of swift and harsh punishment, even for something as innocuous as cannabis. But this is not the Vietnam of today, nor the Saigon of today Or at least as far as cannabis use is concerned

Don’t get me wrong, serious drugs (meth, pills, etc ) are massively illegal here in Vietnam and if you’re caught with them, there are severe punishments. It’s important to note that cannabis does fall into the same category as cocaine and heroin

Yes, cannabis is classified as a drug, on paper, but in reality, when it comes to enforcement, there’s a “look the other way” kind of attitude. So much so that there are even some places here in Saigon that are entirely 420-friendly.

What to Expect When Buying Weed in Saigon

Finding cannabis in Saigon is not very difficult, but finding good quality cannabis can sometimes be challenging, especially if you’re accustomed to excellent cultivators. There are three types of cannabis you’ll most likely find here:.

1 Vietnamese Outdoor Grown

Though easiest to find, the quality is very low, and full of stems and seeds The potency level is very weak It is, however, a very cheap option You can get six to eight grams for 200,000 VND ($9 00)

2 Cambodian Grown

As the name suggests, it is grown and brought in from our neighbors to the west, Cambodia This is a midlevel option, with not as many stems and seeds The potency is still reasonably mild and is still a very costeffective option at 300,000 VND ($12 00) for five to six grams. Again, not a bad deal, and it’s a step up from the Vietnamese outdoor stuff.

3. Import

Different strains are brought in from Canada and various parts of Europe This is by far my favorite option No sticks, no seeds, great terpenes, high potency, and great flavors! Of course, this option is costly. At about 500,000 VND ($20.00) a gram. Of course, it is more expensive than the other two options, but quality comes at a price

420 Friendly Places

Bui Vien Walking Street

Often referred to by expats as “Backpacker Street” for no other reason than if you’re a backpacker, this is usually the first place you wind up in Saigon

Bui Vien is a 1,400-meter-long shoulder-to-shoulder walking street full of bars to the right and left The music floods into the road blaring at decibels so high it’ll make your eyes rattle The air is filled with equal parts cigarette smoke, street food, and sweat – All blending together to create a smell that can only be imagined and barely be described.

This is a place where pretty much anything goes It’s not only 420-friendly here; it’s basically everything friendly If you ever find yourself here, don’t hesitate to light up and enjoy all the lovely madness Bui Vien offers.

The Desert Trip Cafe

Of course, all chaos all the time is not exactly everyone's cup of tea If you're looking to relax with some THC or maybe even enjoy some THC-infused tea, there is no better place than the Desert Trip Café. Tucked away in a small alley, this little Moroccan-themed rooftop café is not only a place where it is perfectly acceptable to smoke freely, but you can opt to indulge in edibles made there daily, from gummies to doughnuts and even the coffee or tea itself

A Quick Conversation at Foglia

The aptly named Indika is a pizza and local craft beer kitchen in an old French-style house It's decked from wall to ceiling with artwork from local artists in Saigon and hosts live music, comedy, and open jams from expat and regional acts It’s a great environment to mingle with the local expat community, order some good food and watch live entertainment, all while lighting up and enjoying yourself comfortably at your table

Foglia is not exactly a place where you get the green light to smoke; it's not even a food, drink or live music establishment Instead, it's a unique smoke shop outside Saigon's city center It’s the place where I bought my first Stundenglass hookah, and it’s where I met 25-year-old Lieu Quang Vinh – the owner of Foglia.

Vinh believes that cannabis brings people together and spreads happiness So when opening his shop in 2017, he aimed to be a proponent of spreading this happiness to the cannabis culture of Saigon Though he has faced his fair share of challenges, Vinh continues to pursue his goal of helping provide people with products that promote good health and reduce stress.

Overall, Vietnam is still a young country experiencing constant development. It’s an incredible place that will leave you with experiences you will never forget.

Whether or not cannabis ever sees legalization here in Vietnam remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure: If you’re a cannabis lover willing to try something different, Saigon awaits you.

Saint Vincent & The Grenadines

Interview With Renae Blackhall

Renae arrived in the Caribbean circa 2021 to help a startup cannabis company that found itself in the weeds

Feeling burnt out by Canada’s legal market, she and her partner were contacted about a new cultivation opportunity for a commercial cannabis farm in the Caribbean Intrigued to learn more, they packed their bags and were en route to their next cannaadventure

Today, CannaSVG is a large-scale cannabis cultivation that produces medical cannabis for patients seeking an alternative, holistic approach to wellness

Located in the Caribbean nation of St Vincent & The Grenadines (SVG), this cannabis cultivation runs on a 60-acre, cutting-edge outdoor organic farm. An extensive number of 96’ x 30’ greenhouses help to control all parameters of the perpetual plant cycle

including a cloud-based system, lighting, irrigation, climate control, and light deprivation techniques as part of their innovative cultivation practices.

But back in 2021, shortly before their arrival on the island, La Soufriere, the largest active volcano in the Caribbean erupted Devastating damage wrecked the Caribbean islands and this new outdoor cannabis farm had been completely wiped away

Nearly all the plants and cultivations on this startup property had been wrecked in the eruption The aftermath of volcanic ash and soot lingered throughout the island – in the air, on plants, and according to Renae, you can still see some piles of char around the island today.

It wasn’t long after the volcano’s eruption and their arrival that they both quickly realized the work they had cut out for them

Operating on Island Time

The challenges for this Caribbean cannabis company didn’t stop here Renae began to recognize other obstacles that stood in the way of establishing and operating a commercial medical cannabis company.

“The logistics for operating in this market have been a challenge for sure,” Renae reflected on the common initial hurdle faced for starting CannaSVG back up again (If you’re in the cannabis industry and haven’t heard a comment like this before, then you probably haven’t worked in cannabis long enough).

"But back in 2021, shortly before their arrival on the island, La Soufriere, the largest active volcano in the Caribbean erupted."
54 Volume 14

With the island’s remote location and the often urgent demand for specific cultivation supplies or equipment, it wasn’t easy treading Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, among a variety of other reasons, any shipped supplies or imported goods for the cannabis operation had both an increased cost and wait time for delivery

Compared to what they had experienced in the North American market, there were also no training or compliance standards for cultivating medical cannabis in SVG. Plus, any licensing or permits required for CannaSVG as a medical cannabis company is an elongated process– as Renae put it, “Everyone’s on island time ”

Countering a Cannabis Culture

Aside from a rupturing volcano initially wiping away CannaSVG’s cash crop, pushback from the community stirred them into having to think and operate in a whole new direction

Pot’s prohibition became widespread throughout the Caribbean starting around the 20th century This crackdown on cannabis established a negative stigma on the plant and its benefits – the same plant the Rastafarian culture had honored as a sacred tool in religious ceremonies for thousands of years

For decades, the Rastafarian culture went against the grain of white foreigners and settlers who had moved to the Caribbean to establish wealth. Legacy and legendary cannabis farmers continued operating a ‘smooth-sailing’ illicit market to fund their entire livelihood, keeping their “Mom and Pop” shops afloat

So when medical cannabis was legalized in 2017 – a dynamic diversion grew between the traditional cultivator space known by legacy growers, and the more modern strategies of a new medical industry.

Global Cannabis for a Sustainable Medical Market

CannaSVG is granted by the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to legally export medical cannabis to patients on a global scale. Although CannaSVG’s medical cannabis exporting currently excludes some sales paths to countries (like the U.S.), the goal of this global cannabis export is to develop a sustainable and competitive sub-regional medicinal wellness ecosystem

foreigners and settlers who had moved to

Between their cultivation, processing, and soon-to-be tourist opportunities, CannaSVG is committed to providing quality plant medicine to the global community and preserving the land through strong sustainable efforts in the process.

By donating to local co-ops and engaging and working within nearby neighborhoods, they’re better understanding how to incorporate medical cannabis in a fun and restorative way while honoring and respecting its roots and cultural origin in the process.

In addition to launching their in-house brand, Summus, they are working to open a cannabis cafe, consumption lounge, and medical dispensary to host tourists and medical patients from around the world

She has a clear vision of how cannabis and tourism can directly impact local companies and give cultural communities a seat at the table.

Growing an Economy Through Cannabis Tourism

Today, Renae is COO of CannaSVG Between her passion for cannabis wellness and background in hospitality, she’s working to bring tourism to CannaSVG and the Caribbean

She has a clear vision of how cannabis and tourism can directly impact local companies and give cultural communities a seat at the table Cannabis tourism in the Caribbean can help rebuild and redefine the Rastafarian culture that was oppressed during prohibition, while positively promoting the economic base of this small island.

Even with the island’s slightly traditional religious view on cannabis, Renae hopes to be both a professional representative and advocate for self medicating through plant wellness. “I really hope to affect change. Every generation will have their needs for tourism, let’s be the frontier of cannabis wellness tourism and be able to provide the service in the many forms of healing,” she comments, “Let’s make medicine fun!”

With their devotion to the power of plant wellness, the hope of CannaSVG and Summus is to bring a sense of wellness and relaxation to visitors

“On a trip to, let’s say, Cancun, you may come back feeling hungover or exhausted We want cannabis tourism to be an immersive experience with plant healing that is not just a vacation, but a treat to wellness for yourself.”
