Welcome to our Winter ‘11 issue * e! re

Hello and welcome to the Winter issue of the Family Grapevine!

Yet again it has been a busy summer here at the FG. My daughter and I loaded up our bright red tent, a huge pile of magazines and flyers and lots of felt tips, card and glitter and headed to the Broxtowe Play Days on the parks in Beeston, Eastwood, Stapleford and Kimberley and lastly the Ashfield Show in Sutton Lawn. It was fantastic to meet up with so many of you, I hope your children enjoyed the brilliant books and cards they made! NEW For the Winter! The FG has got a new look and is covering Long Eaton for the first time, so its a big hello to all our new readers ...let me know what you think, it will be great to hear from you! The Family Grapevine publishes three magazines a year in early November, March and July and emails three newsletters a year in January, May and September all packed with information for you and your family! To subscribe to our newsletter please visit our website or facebook page. And once again it is HUGE thank you to our fantastic advertisers. The origin of the Watnall Farm Shop was put forward by the Hazledines in 2006 when they submitted a planning application to naturally extend their commitment to their family’s farming traditions. The Hazledine family philosophy: “The farm works hand in hand with Farm Shop, from the land to kitchen” The farm is a listed building, so permission was not granted until 2007.

After a lot of hard work and investment, the Farm Shop was established in June 2008 and now consists of a bakehouse, butcher’s cutting room and, of course, the main shopping area. The Hazeldine philosophy in setting up the Farm Shop is simple: to aim at giving a high standard of product which is all sourced off the farm. Toddlers Timetable Christmas Craft Activities Sorry folks... tis the season for glitter!! Here are some great ideas for getting the family together to create your own little bit of Christmas! All you need is gold, silver or white spray paint (adult use only), Christmas wrapping paper, red ribbon, old Christmas cards, glue, glitter, wire ties (eg. as used on sandwich bags) and any other bit and pieces that you have lying around!

Woodland Forage & Sparkle!

Nottinghamshire has some fantastic woodland footpaths and parks, get wrapped up and enjoy a walk in the fresh air. In between rushing around burning off energy the kids can collect fir cones, twigs and bare branches (gloves might be a sensible precaution). Fir cones look fabulous sprayed gold, once dry dab a bit of pva glue on its edges and, holding it over a container, sprinkle on the glitter. Tie a red ribbon around the top and make it into a loop and let them hang their fir cone decoration on the tree. Place six twigs in two triangle shapes and fix in place with wire ties. Place one triangle on top of the other and turn the top 90 degrees to form a star and again use ties to keep in place. Paint or spray white, gold etc, dab on glue and apply the dreaded glitter if wanted or attach baubles with the ties, tie on a gift tag with your child’s name... get creative! Once finished, tie a loop of ribbon through the top and hang up in pride of place! Small bare branches with children’s decorations hanging on them can look fantastic! Paint or spray if you wish and find a suitable container and place to stand it in. Hang on the baubles!

Christmas Bunting Bunting looks really cute but can be expensive. Using wrapping paper or old Christmas cards let the kids make their own! Cut out a long triangle template in cardboard and draw round it on the back of either Christmas paper or old cards. Cut out the triangles (kid’s crinkly scissors are brilliant for this!) and with the paper ones fold the top over your string or ribbon, trim the corners and glue or staple in place. With the card ones you can use a hole punch and thread the string or ribbon through. Use plain card and your older children can spell out their names in bubble writing...one decorated letter per triangle for a really personal touch.

Christmas Cards

Whether its scribbly, daubed, exuberant or precise there’s nothing like childrens art! When making cards the trick is to keep the art away from the card itself until the last minute! Cut out stars, Christmas trees, angels, baubles etc in card and let them loose with felt tips, crayons, paint, tissue paper etc. (not good at drawing? Download some shapes from the internet - Activity Village is a good source) Once the artist has finished glitter can be applied. Glue a square of thickish card on the back, fold an A4 or A5 piece of card in half, apply glue to the square of card and stick it on to the front, or arrange one from each child. Cut a piece of paper, fold and fit as leaves inside the card for messages and names...once complete run glue down either side of the fold and stick into the card. Enjoy!

Preschools & Playgroups Alphabet House spells out success for forestry judges

Alphabet House Day Nursery in Nottingham Road, Long Eaton, has scooped a £500 prize in the Royal Forestry Society (RFS) Excellence in Forestry Schools Award 2011 after impressing judges with their Forest School. Schools in a region ranging from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire to the North London boroughs and East Anglia were invited to take part in the RFS Schools Award which aim to encourage and reward those that increase understanding and appreciation of woodlands and of the link between trees and everyday wood products. The awards are held annually, rotating around England, Wales and Northern Ireland over a seven year period. Alphabet House took second place and will also receive 10 native trees from the Forestry Commission. Judging the 2011 competition, Susannah Podmore, Forest Education Initiative Co-ordinator for England, said: “The enthusiasm from the nursery, the woodland owners, parents, and assistants for this Forest School programme was overwhelming. The programme has been featured in Nursery World as an excellent case study for other early years and primary settings.

Thanks to close links with local woodland owners Edmund and Kate Woodward, members of the CLA, at nearby Hall Farm the nursery has been able to create its own Forest School in a five acre woodland.

Children are encouraged to take part in Forest School from the age of three or four, building shelters and enjoying imaginative and creative play. Storytelling and snacks around a forest fire are all on the timetable. Parents and carers are encouraged to get involved and local community action groups have also helped build a fire pit, seating area and toilets. Using Forest School, Alphabet House is incorporating the Early Years Foundation Stage four themes: a unique child; positive relationships; enabling environment and Learning and Development. David Green is also working with the Woodwards to encourage more schools and groups to get involved under the Countryside Education Visits access scheme.

TIMOTHY WINTERS Timothy Winters comes to school With eyes as wide as a football pool, Ears like bombs and teeth like splinters: A blitz of a boy is Timothy Winters. His belly is white, his neck is dark, And his hair is an exclamation mark. His clothes are enough to scare a crow And through his britches the blue winds blow. When teacher talks he won’t hear a word And he shoots down dead the arithmetic-bird, He licks the patterns off his plate And he’s not even heard of the Welfare State. Timothy Winters has bloody feet And he lives in a house on Suez Street, He sleeps in a sack on the kitchen floor And they say there aren’t boys like him any more. Old man Winters likes his beer And his missus ran off with a bombardier. Grandma sits in the grate with a gin And Timothy’s dosed with an aspirin. The Welfare Worker lies awake But the law’s as tricky as a ten-foot snake, So Timothy Winters drinks his cup And slowly goes on growing up. At Morning Prayers the Master helves For children less fortunate than ourselves, And the loudest response in the room is when Timothy Winters roars “Amen!” So come one angel, come on ten: Timothy Winters says “Amen Amen amen amen amen.” Timothy Winters, Lord. Wonderful Winter Events at White Post Farm!

As we wave goodbye to the summer it’s time to get excited about some extra special winter events. First up, it’s Halloween and the renowned White Post Eerie Evenings. These three nights of fun and frights have something for the whole family, full lots of spooky fun and surprises. The terrifying Tractor and Trailer Rides are back along with the Haunted Barn, Bar, Hog Roast and BBQ. This year the nights are Friday 28th, Saturday 29th and Monday 31st of October. Tickets are £7.00 each and booking is essential so give us a call to book or for any more info. Christmas begins at White Post Farm on Saturday 26th November. Santa arrives, the Nativity Play begins and Peppa Pig is on hand to celebrate the start of the

White Post Festive Season.

The special Nativity Evenings are another great way of celebrating Christmas-time. Get wrapped up warm, see Santa, enjoy mulled wine and mince pies and of course join in the interactive Nativity Play. This year’s Evenings are Tuesday 20th, Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd December and tickets cost just £6.50 each. All this winter fun with 3,000 friendly animals to meet and feed. Don’t forget to pay a visit to the great new Meerkat enclosure.

A genuine opportunity for children to develop their singing, dancing and acting skills in fully staged performances! Youngsters in Mansfield & Nottingham are being urged to take to the stage with local theatre company – New Youth Theatre. The New Youth Theatre concept is simple. Children between the ages of 3-16 years are taught how to develop and improve their performing arts skills whilst rehearsing for a fully staged musical each term. There are three shows a year and the shows are performed at local theatres.
