Summer Reading Challenge at a Library near you Each year the Summer Reading Challenge to children is simple. They’re encouraged to read six or more books of their choice – fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books just as long as they are borrowed from the library – during the holidays. There are collectable incentives and rewards, plus a certificate for every child who completes the Challenge and children can enrol at their local library from the end of June onwards. This year’s theme – Mythical Maze challenges children aged four to eleven to find their way around a labyrinth that introduces them to fantastical creatures, collecting stickers of each character along the way. Many of our local libraries will be running free craft activity days based on Mythical Maze, just ask at your local branch for dates and times. Parents and carers can join the Summer Reading Challenge on their Facebook page for all the latest news, while children can chat, get reading recommendations and enter competitions on their website. So pop down to your local library and help your children discover a love of stories this summer whilst they maintain and develop their reading skills over the summer holidays.

@Home Childcare Training Academy Provides Home-Grown Childcare Service Families in need of extra help with caring for young children can now benefit from a Parents’ Help service through @Home Childcare Training Academy. The service is aimed at parents on maternity/paternity leave who, when they return to work, would like their children to benefit from personal 1-2-1 care and attention from home childcare. The parents’ helper is a trainee home childcarer (nanny) who will work alongside parents whilst undertaking professional Early Years training. The trainee has specialist mentor/tutor to provide guidance, support and training. Director, Yvette Oliver-Mighten is excited about the new service. “Our Childcare Academy is our way of growing a home childcare workforce by providing pathway training and career opportunities for people genuinely interested in a career in Early Years. Parent helpers will progress onto sole charge home childcarers who will provide quality, affordable childcare to families, from all income brackets, in need of flexible childcare.”

Many people do not realise the benefits that music can bring to children. Rattle and Roll is on a musical mission to put this right! Singing to your baby is proven to develop their language, you can calm them with lullabies and delight them during play. As your baby grows, they can join in with songs to develop confidence and explore rhythm. Preschool children can sing more complex songs, which expand their vocabulary and develop their understanding of musical notation, whilst nurturing a real love for music for life. Once at school, keep singing and grab a recorder, a brilliant way to allow your child to learn to play their first instrument. Rattle and Roll, through baby and preschool music classes and ‘The Recorder Club’, are very proud of 8 years music service to over 600 children. Join the fun!

Does your child struggle with Literacy or Numeracy? Is it a battle trying to get them to do their homework? If so, they probably also lack confidence in their own abilities. Crucial to improving their learning is getting them to believe in themselves and realise that they can reach their goals. Raising children’s confidence is an essential part of the learning process and the first step in helping them to reach their full potential. Sometimes children won’t have the confidence to ask their teachers to explain things to them again – they worry about how the rest of the class may perceive them. This is where one to one tuition can really make a difference and help transform the child’s learning. For further details visit:

Telling Tales: Nottingham Kids’ Festival of Imagination TELLING TALES BANNER_ART.indd

1

This exciting event returns to Lady Bay, Nottingham, on 11 October 2014 providing many opportunities for children between 3 and 13 years to get involved with the fun, imagination and creativity involved in the world of story-making. Telling Tales: Nottingham Kid’s Festival of Imagination (previously known as Tales from the Riverbank) is in its second year and hopes to repeat the success of its first year when over 750 people came to Lady Bay on a wet and windy October day to be creative and be inspired. Last year people attended talks by well-known authors and illustrators and took part in drama, writing, illustration and animation sessions. Children who took part in our young writer’s competition and attended the festival have gone on to win competitions, draw pictures and cartoons and make their own short animation films. Children who want to take part this year can find more information on page 23 or by visiting the Telling Tales website... but hurry, the closing date is 22nd July! Come along to Telling Tales – it’s a great, cheap day out for you and your kids where you can sneak in some learning along with all the fun!

www.nottinghamtellingtales.org Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NottinghamTellingTales Twitter: @nottmtelltales About the festival: Telling Tales: Nottingham Kid’s Festival of Imagination is a not-for profit community event providing exciting opportunities for children between 3 and 13 years to get involved with the fun, imagination and creativity involved in the world of story-making. The original event was organised by four local mums who were keen to deliver a fun and accessible event for kids from across Nottingham.

Family Health • Antenatal Services Our Tried and Tested Recipes! Welcome to the fourth in our collection of easy, quick and affordable recipes for you and your family. They have all become firm favourites of ours here at the FG. Here’s our summer fave!

Easy Summer Pasta Salad Prep time: 20 mins Cook Time: 10-15 mins Servings:4

Ingredients

8oz dried pasta shapes 2 red peppers, deseeded and chopped 2 ripe avocados chopped Small bunch of seedless grapes Tin of mixed bean salad, drained 7 oz tin of tuna, drained Cashew nuts Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste For the vinaigrette: 4 tbspoons olive oil 2tbspoons white wine vinegar 2 teaspoons French mustard

Directions

1. Cook the pasta until al dente and rinse immediately under cold water-this helps to stop the pasta sticking together. 2. Add the chopped peppers, avocados, grapes and mixed beans. Flake over the tuna and mix together and season to taste. 3. Sprinkle over the cashew nuts. 4. Mix the olive oil, vinegar and mustard together in a separate bowl and serve with the pasta salad to taste, along with some French bread .

Support Rainbows by doing 20 good deeds Youngsters in the East Midlands can support children and young people at Rainbows Hospice by taking on 20 good deeds this summer holidays. Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People has launched its Do 20 for 20 campaign to coincide with its 20th birthday celebrations this year. Throughout the summer, children are encouraged to raise vital funds by doing 20 good deeds in return for a donation from their family. Every time a good deed is carried out, a sticker is earned for children to complete a challenge sticker sheet. Paula North, Rainbows community fundraiser, said: “This is a great way for youngsters to get involved and support Rainbows, as well as helping out at home and keeping entertained over the summer. There are lots of things they could do such as going without something, cleaning, selling things or gardening or they may have plenty of their own ideas. “People can donate whatever they think the deed is worth and everything raised goes towards supporting the work of the hospice, which is the only hospice for children and young people with terminal and life-limiting illnesses in the East Midlands. Raising £10 would pay for an hour’s worth of care, £20 would fund one hour of physiotherapy and an hour of external bereavement support would cost £50. “It would be great to have the support of youngsters in the East Midlands, especially in what is such an important year for us.”

To get involved, call on 07880 721 750 or email fundraising@rainbows.co.uk or visit www.rainbows.co.uk/do20

the worry of missing your booking can be very stressful. Either set off much earlier than you need to or, if you can, book an overnight stay nearby for the night before. If there’s no rush to get where you are going, you won’t get stressed about traffic or roadworks.

* Pack travelling essentials such as baby wipes, water, first aid kit, easily accessibly changes of clothing, plastic bags etc

* Stock up with snacks, your back seat upholstery might take a bit of a hammering but snacks are important for keeping energy levels and morale up. Pack a snack bag that can magically appear when you sense that their attention and patience may be waning. * Take regular breaks. Break up your journey regularly with picnics, walks and play areas. Fresh air and a runaround for the kids plus a power nap for the driver reduces stress all round.

* Look at your route, the time the journey is going to take and the time you want to arrive at your destination, possible traffic congestion and the best time of day, or night, for your family to travel. And make a plan!

Top Tips for Long Car Journeys with Kids! The key to successful long car journeys with kids is to treat it as part of your holiday. * Play games and quizzes (don’t forget paper and pens for scoring). Favourites include I Spy; Pub Cricket (counting the legs in pub names on your side of the car eg. horse = 4, king = 2); the number plate game which can be adapted for your childrens’ ages, i.e take the letters from the number plate of the car in front and make up a proper sentence or word, or take it in turns to look for letters in aphabetical order; Spot the... everyone chooses something to look

for e.g. yellow cars, blue lorries, road signs, bridges etc; Bingo, quiz books, magnetic board games, paper and pencils are all good ideas. Score points where approriate and have small prizes ready!

* Listen to story CD’s (short stories seem to work best and Horrid Henry was always our favourite!) or have a sing-along. Libraries are a good source, make sure you have booked them for longer than the time you are away. * Screens, headphones and gadgets can be invaluable on really long journeys. Ensure they are all charged ahead of travelling and that you have enough travel leads and adaptors for everyone to use the 12v cigarette lighter socket. * Buy some small ‘presents’ and wrap them up for the journey. These can be used as prizes for games or rewards for completing a leg of the journey without any fights or tantrums...some might call them bribes...

* Involve older children in the navigation. Show

them where you are going on a map which they can then follow and match up to the sat nav. Mark key towns and features along the route for them to look out for.

Happy and safe travelling!

S e a s i d e S a f et y

During the wonderful long days of Summer, we land-locked Midlanders like nothing better than to head for the coast! In the excitement, however, it is easy to forget that the sea is not as safe as a swimming pool, with its tides, currents, rocks and deeply shelving beaches it can be easy to get into difficulties. Follow our tips from the RNLI on keeping you and your family safe and have a fantastic time!! Every summer, lifeguards respond to thousands of incidents on UK beaches. To stay safe at the seaside, be informed about the dangers. If you see anyone in trouble, alert the lifeguards or call either 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard. To avoid getting into difficulty yourselves at the seaside:

1. Swim at a beach patrolled by lifeguards

Find the red-and-yellow flags and always swim or bodyboard between them. This is the safest part of the beach because it’s where the lifeguards patrol. Lifeguards will move the flags to adjust for changing conditions during the course of the day as rip currents and other dangers can come and go with the tide and varying weather conditions.

2. Look for information and follow advice

Find out about the beach before you go there, and check the weather and tide times. Ask at the local tourist information office or use the Good Beach Guide for more information on tides. When you get to the beach, read the safety signs at the entrance. This will help you to identify and avoid hazards as well as find out about the safest areas to swim. The signs will also have specific information that you can provide to emergency services to help them locate you quickly.

3. Never swim alone 4. If you get into trouble in the sea Stick your hand in the air and shout for help

5. If you see someone else in trouble

Tell or call a lifeguard, look for a provided life saving ring or other buoyant object that can be thrown out to the person.

6. Inflatables

Never use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas. When there is little or no wind, only use inflatables between the red-and-yellow flags and make sure children are closely supervised.

7. Always supervise children

It’s easy to get distracted or think someone else is watching them.

8. Don’t go into the sea after drinking alcohol. 9. Know your flags.

On beaches patrolled by lifeguards, different flags tell you where it’s safest to swim and which areas are designated for watersports.

Taster Sessions being held August 2014 Rehearsals start September 2014 New Youth Theatre is extremely pleased

to announce that their next Junior production will be “Beauty and the Beast Jnr”. Rehearsals will begin in September 2014 and show will be staged at the Bonington Theatre in Arnold from the 20th November – 27th November.

Based on the classic fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast, the show transports the audience into the heart of provincial life in a lovely French town. When Maurice becomes lost in the woods on the way to the fair, he seeks shelter in an old castle, but the master of the castle is a horrible beast that takes him captive. Maurice’s daughter, Belle, must then give up her freedom to save his life. Belle teaches him to be courteous and respectful and they both fall in love. This “tale as old as time” is a firm favourite with audiences both young and old. The New Youth Theatre concept is simple. Children between the ages of 3-12 years are taught how to develop and improve their performing arts skills whilst rehearsing for a fully staged musical each term. To join the energetic cast in this and future productions call:
