Family Health • Antenatal & Postnatal Services Our Tried and Tested Recipes!
Welcome to the fourth in our collection of easy, quick and affordable recipes for you and your family. They have all become firm favourites of ours here at the FG. Here’s our veggie fave!
Vegetarian Cheesy Plait Prep time: 20 mins Cook Time: 25-30 mins Servings: 4 or cut into single rolls
Ingredients 1 packet frozen puff pastry thawed 10oz wholemeal breadcrumbs 1/2 lb mature cheddar cheese grated 3tbsp double cream 1 chopped onion 1 beaten egg Salt, pepper and Italian mixed herbs to taste
Directions 1. Pre heat oven to 220 deg C. 2. Mix the breadcrumbs, cheese, onion and seasoning in a bowl. Slowly add the cream and mix until the mixture holds together, adding more if needed. 3. Sprinkle some flour on the work surface. Using a rolling pin, roll out the pastry into a rough square shape, about 30 x 30cm. Put the pastry on the lined baking tray 4. Now spoon the filling down the middle of the pastry in a sausage shape – leave a little gap at the top and bottom (about 3cm) 5. Cut the pastry into 1.5cm strips, at a slight diagonal away from you on either side of the filling, the same number each side – approx 12. Brush the pastry with most of the saved egg, fold the ends up over the filling and lay the strips alternately to form the plait, brush with the remaining egg and sprinkle with mixed herbs. 6. Bake for 25-30mins until golden.

A Guide to Infectious Childhood Diseases What to do:
• Give your child paracetamol or ibuprofen to ease pain in the swollen glands. Check the pack for the correct dosage. • Give your child plenty to drink, but not fruit juices as they make the saliva flow, which can make your child’s pain worse. • There’s no need to see your GP unless your child has stomach ache and is being sick, or develops a rash of small purple or red spots or bruises.
Chickenpox
Incubation period: Between 1 and 3 weeks. Infectious period: The most infectious time is 1-2 days before the rash
appears, but it continues to be infectious until all the blisters have crusted over.
Symptoms:
It starts with feeling unwell, a rash and a slight temperature. Spots develop, which are red and become fluid-filled blisters within a day or two. They eventually dry into scabs, which drop off. The spots appear first on the chest, back, head or neck, then spread. They don’t leave scars unless they're badly infected.
What to do:
You don’t need to go to your GP or Accident and Emergency (A&E) department unless you’re not sure that it's chickenpox or your child is very unwell or distressed. • Give your child plenty to drink. • Use paracetamol or ibuprofen to relieve the fever and discomfort. • Baths, loose comfortable clothes and calamine lotion can all ease the itchiness. • Try to stop your child scratching or picking at their spots as this will increase the risk of scarring. It’s hard for children to do this, so give them plenty of praise and encouragement. Distractions, such as TV, are good for taking their mind off the itching. Let the school or nursery know that your child is ill in case other children are at risk.
Measles
Incubation period: 7-12 days. Infectious period: from around four days before the rash appears until
four days after it's gone.
Symptoms:
• Measles begins like a bad cold and cough with sore, watery eyes. • Your child will become gradually more unwell, with a temperature. • A rash appears after the third or fourth day. The spots are red and slightly raised. They may be blotchy, but not itchy. The rash begins behind the ears and spreads to the face and neck, then the rest of the body. • The illness usually lasts about a week. Measles is much more serious than chickenpox, German measles or mumps. It's best prevented (by the MMR vaccination). Serious complications include pneumonia and death.
What to do:
• Make sure your child gets plenty of rest and plenty to drink (warm drinks will ease the cough). • Give them paracetamol or ibuprofen to relieve the discomfort and fever. • Put Vaseline around their lips to protect their skin. • If their eyelids are crusty, gently wash them with warm water. • If your child is having trouble breathing, is coughing a lot or seems drowsy, see your GP urgently.
Mumps
Incubation period: 14-25 days. Infectious period: from a few days before starting to feel unwell until the
swelling goes down.
Symptoms:
• A general feeling of being unwell. • A high temperature. • Pain and swelling on the side of the face in front of the ear and under the chin. Swelling usually begins on one side, followed (though not always) by the other side. • Discomfort when chewing. Your child’s face will be back to normal size in about a week. It’s rare for mumps to affect boys’ testes (balls). This happens more often in adult men with mumps. If your child’s testes are swollen or painful, see your GP.
10
Parvovirus B19
(also known as fifth disease or slapped cheek disease) Incubation period: 1-20 days. Infectious period: a few days before the rash appears (children are no longer contagious when the rash appears).
Symptoms:
• It begins with a fever and nasal discharge. • A bright red rash, like the mark left by a slap, appears on the cheeks. • Over the next two to four days a lacy rash spreads to the trunk and limbs. • Children with blood disorders such as spherocytosis or sickle cell disease may become more anaemic. They should seek medical care. What to do: • Make sure your child rests and drinks plenty of fluids. • Give them paracetamol or ibuprofen to relieve the discomfort and fever. • Pregnant women or women planning to become pregnant should see their GP or midwife as soon as possible if they come into contact with the infection or develop a rash.
German Measles (Rubella)
Incubation period: 15-20 days. Infectious period: from one week before the rash first appears until at least five days after it's gone.
Symptoms:
• It starts like a mild cold. • A rash appears in a day or two, first on the face, then on the body. The spots are flat (on light skin they're pale pink). • Glands in the back of the neck may be swollen. • Your child won’t usually feel unwell. It can be difficult to diagnose rubella with certainty.
What to do:
• Give your child plenty to drink. Keep them away from anybody who’s in the early stages of pregnancy (up to four months) or trying to get pregnant. If your child has had contact with any pregnant women before you knew about the illness, you must let the women know as they'll need to see their GP.
Whooping Cough
Incubation period: 6-21 days. Infectious period: from the first signs of the illness until about six weeks
after coughing starts. If an antibiotic is given, the infectious period will continue for up to five days after starting treatment. Antibiotics need to be given early in the course of the illness in order to improve symptoms.
Symptoms:
• The symptoms are similar to a cold and cough, with the cough gradually getting worse. • After about two weeks, coughing bouts start. These are exhausting and make it difficult to breathe. • Younger children (babies under six months) are much more seriously affected and can have breath-holding or blue attacks, even before they develop a cough. • Your child may choke and vomit. • Sometimes, but not always, there will be a whooping noise as the child draws in breath after coughing. • The coughing fits may continue for several weeks, and can continue for up to three months.
What to do:
• Whooping cough is best prevented through immunisation. • If your child has a cough that gets worse rather than better and starts to have longer fits of coughing more and more often, see your GP. It’s important for the sake of other children to know whether or not your child has whooping cough. Talk to your GP about how to look after your child. Avoid contact with babies, who are most at risk from serious complications. All information taken from NHS Choices http://www.nhs.uk/ Sept 2014.

On the Grapevine... New family-friendly venue, Sobar
Get creative with Creation Station!
Run by local charity Double Impact, Sobar is Nottingham’s first and only alcohol-free café and entertainment venue and was recently recommended in the Evening Post as Nottingham’s ‘Best for Children’ venue. As well as a delicious children’s menu, there is a great Kids’ Corner with games and toys, plenty of space for buggies, proper (clean) highchairs and breastfeeding is welcome. The venue also hosts regular family, music, comedy, and art events. Located just off the Old Market Square on Friar Lane, it’s a great place to escape the throngs and re-fuel.
Hi everyone, just a few lines to introduce myself as the new “Creation Station” franchisee for our area. I am delivering structured educational and exciting arts and craft sessions for babies, toddlers and pre-school children. I am extremely enthusiastic about this new challenge in my life and although I am only in my first “term” I have already met some wonderful mums, dads, grandparents and little ones. A fantastic stock delivery for my new adventure has turned the house into my children’s paradise with paint, glue, feathers, buttons, stencils, gems, clay, glitter and the list goes on... freely available... however, the mess is not so impressive!!!!!.. Please come along and discover the experience for yourselves...without the mess!!

Home-Grow Your Own Nanny
@Home Childcare Academy is looking for families in need of extra childcare support and home help with caring for young children. The service is aimed at parents, on maternity/paternity who might be interested in having a nanny when they return to work. The parents’ helper is a trainee home childcarer (nanny) who attends weekly childcare classes whilst working alongside parents to provide support for up to 16 hours per week. The trainee has a personal mentor/tutor to provide on-going support and guidance. Director, Yvette Oliver-Mighten is excited about the new service. “Our Home Childcare Academy allows parents to home-grow their own personal nanny. The scheme provides pathway training and career opportunities for people genuinely interested in a career in Early Years. The service is affordable too as parents simply contribute £18 per week towards the cost of the training. t: 0115 978 3399 e: childcare@homechildcare.co.uk w: www.athomechildcare.co.uk
Children, lets get baking!
Hi I’m Kelly from Go Bake and my mission is to get kids baking from 18 months old! My under 5’s classes run across Nottinghamshire and are a great way to introduce kids to handling food, learning where it comes from, tasting new foods and developing key skills for life including maths, literacy, geography & history! Coming from an education and food background I make sure that everything is accessible to all children with a big emphasis on having fun, helped out by our puppet Gingie. Go Bake isn’t just about classes, I am kept busy with cupcakes and pizza parties at weekends and making birthday cakes as well as the holiday specials I run (Gruffalo or Frozen anyone?).
So, lets Go Bake!

On the Grapevine...
Can you read the above title? It says, ‘Does Your Child Have Dyslexia?’ Imagine a world where, instead of relying mainly on the written word, we use images to communicate. Those who can draw will be able to express themselves effectively while those who can only create stick men images will not. Would that mean that those who cannot draw are less able? No, it would indicate that those individuals have not been asked to show what they know and understand in a form appropriate for them. This is what it is like for many children who have Dyslexia. Often the two Ds go together – Dyslexia and Determination. While many adults who have dyslexia possess determination, some children may need help to develop it. Some Indicators of Dyslexia • Finds reading difficult and has problems understanding what has been read • Reads a word on one page but cannot remember it on the next • Finds spelling difficult, reverses letters or words, e.g. b for d or was for saw Spells the same word several different ways in a piece of work • Learns how to spell a word one week and has forgotten it the next • Has lots of ideas but cannot put them down on paper • Has difficulty remembering sequences such as the days of the week, the alphabet and times tables • Is disorganised at home and school, constantly loses and forgets items and information • In other ways is a bright and alert child • Frustration has led to behavioural or emotional difficulties November 3rd to 8th, is dyslexia awareness week. If many of the above sound familiar, you may wish to contact our confidential Dyslexia Helpline for free information and advice. We can provide dyslexia screening, dyslexia assessment, one-to-one specialist tuition and courses for children who have dyslexia.
Do you dream of running your own business from home? Would you like to join our enthusiastic, friendly group and run your own Family Grapevine magazine from home? Lay your kitchen foil shiny side down on a folded newspaper or magazine. With the end of your paintbrush, and pressing firmly, draw your design on the foil. Take care not to press too hard or you will rip the foil! Achieving the right level of pressure may take some practise. Trim around the outside of your design and the glue it, shiny side up, to the front of your card blank. Get creative and add decoration!

Instructions:
3 craft sticks (use coloured or you can use plain and paint) Green paint (optional) Cork or toilet roll with slit cut in the top, or ribbon for hanging Glue Photograph (13cm x 18cm or 5"x7") Double sided tape Green card Decorative bits and pieces
Glue the ends of your sticks together to form a triangle. Leave to dry and then, if necessary, paint the triangle green. NB If you intend to hang the Christmas tree frame on the tree, glue a loop of ribbon in between two of the lolly sticks at this stage. Use double sided tape to stick your photo to the back of the triangle, trimming away the excess. Stick a triangle of green card over the back. Carefully (ask an adult) make a groove in the top of the cork with a sharp knife. Fill the groove with glue and push in your craft stick triangle, making sure the photo is the right way up. Alternatively, cut a slit in a section of toilet roll tube and slide the frame into it. When the glue is dry, decorate the frame with stickers and other decorative bits and pieces.

Is your child Dyslexic?
Does your child have difficulty with reading, writing, spelling, short-term memory or organising themselves? Are they struggling to keep up at school? Are you concerned that they might be dyslexic? 10% of the population are thought to be dyslexic, 4% have severe dyslexia. New research suggests that 55% of children are failing their SAT’s due to undiagnosed dyslexia or specific learning difficulties.
Some Indicators of Dyslexia:

finds reading difficult and has problems understanding what they have read

reads a word on one page and can’t remember it on the next

finds spelling difficult, reverses letters e.g. b for d or was for saw. Spells the same word several different ways in a piece of work

learns how to spell a word one week and has forgotten it the next

has lots of ideas, but can’t put them down on paper

has difficulty remembering sequences such as the days of the week, the alphabet and times tables

is disorganised at home and school, constantly loses and forgets items and information

in other ways a bright and alert child

frustration has led to behavioural or emotional difficulties
If you have answered yes to many of the indicators above you may wish to contact our confidential Dyslexia Helpline for free information and advice. We can provide dyslexia screening, dyslexia assessment, one to one specialist tuition and courses for dyslexic children. Call to discuss how we can help your child overcome their difficulties.

Taster Sessions Available Rehearsals start January 2015 New Youth Theatre is extremely pleased to announce that their next Junior production will be “The Wizard of Oz”. Rehearsals will begin in January 2015 and the show will be staged at the Bonington Theatre in Arnold from the 26th March – 2nd April 2015. Journey to the other side of the rainbow in this beloved classic tale of a girl searching for her way back home. With all your favourite songs, this show is a treat for the whole family! Whether from the books or the movie, The Wizard of Oz is a familiar tale to family audiences. When Dorothy gets her wish of escaping her dull Kansas farm-life, it brings her to a world she could have only imagined. Filled with munchkins, witches, and even flying monkeys, this wondrous new place is bright and exciting, but it isn’t home. With her new friends, Dorothy sets out to ask the all-powerful wizard to help her, help them all, return to who they really are inside. The New Youth Theatre concept is simple. Children between the ages of 3-12 years are taught how to develop and improve their performing arts skills whilst rehearsing for a fully staged musical each term. To join the energetic cast in this and future productions call: 01623 406284 Or visit www.newyouththeatre.co.uk/mansfield Or www.newyouththeatre.co.uk/nottingham
