News!

Winning business skills for Dagfa School! During the Autumn term, the Nottingham Hospitals Charity ran Project 10, an exciting opportunity for pupils to demonstrate their business skills and raise money. Dagfa School Nottingham were chosen as one of the 10 schools and at the beginning of term, 10 groups of pupils were each given £10 to invest and make money with over an eight week period. During their Enrichment sessions on Wednesday afternoons, the pupils looked at business models and tried online business simulations before planning their own activities, which ranged from cake baking, to healthy fruit smoothies, to flavoured popcorn, to house cleaning, to selling time on computer games! The pupils really enjoyed the valuable experience of the pressure of running a

4

business. The pupils raised an excellent amount of money for charity, and Dagfa were very proud when one of the teams won the overall Project 10 competition for the whole of Nottingham. Lucy Eastwood and Hana Hussain’s business, “Luna” was judged to have stood out from the rest of the competition by their resourcefulness and adaptability to the market. Party animals for extra special parties My name is Zoe Godfrey the owner of Party Animals. The idea of Party Animals came to me whilst travelling around Australia and New Zealand on an extended gap year, during which time I worked on cattle ranches, sheep farms and within the polo industry. Managing my current job as a riding school instructor alongside setting up Party Animals has not been easy but with the support of my family I am able to live my dream developing my own business and blessed to be working with children and animals every day. Party Animals gives children an experience they will never forget. Getting up close and personal with a variety of animals they may have never seen before never

mind encountered, learning where they came from and how to look after them. Having my own mini zoo at home and Pongo the skunk running around my house is now the norm for me and my family! Party Animals Ltd www.partyanimalsltd.vpweb.co.uk T: 07983 600879

Design your way onto the Floral Trail A competition has been launched to give children and young people in Nottingham the opportunity to design two new sculptures for the city’s popular Floral Trail, which aims to make Nottingham as attractive a place as possible over the summer months to encourage more people to visit the city centre. The award-winning scheme is organised by Nottingham City Council as part of the Nottingham in Bloom campaign, in conjunction with the Nottingham Business Improvement District (BID). A key part of the city’s summer landscape for the past four years, the Floral Trail’s eye-catching planters are dotted around the city and contain imaginatively designed wicker sculptures which are planted with floral arrangements. Each one represents a different item that can be bought in the city centre or an item which shows how people can enjoy themselves in Nottingham. The 14-strong trail currently features: a handbag, a shoe, a perfume bottle, a jacket, a dress, a hat, a ring, a teapot, a chair, a champagne bottle, a guitar & treble clef, a coffee cup and last year’s competition winners, a cupcake and an ice-skate. The theme of this year’s competition is ‘Enjoying yourself in Nottingham’, for example, eating, drinking, shopping or leisure activities. The item could be something that represents the attractions and history of Nottingham such as a bike, football boots, theatre mask or cricket bat. It could be something to represent services and leisure time in the city, for instance a cocktail glass, cutlery or a hamburger or something you can buy in the city such as an umbrella, book, lamp or radio. Alternatively, young people can come up with their own ideas. The winning designs will be planted up with flowers and be on display in the city from June to the end of September 2015. Entrants must be under 18 and should send their entries to the Nottingham in Bloom team by 20th February 2015 for consideration. More information from the competitions page of the Nottingham in Bloom website www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk/bloom

.... Local play centre joins forces with Nottinghamshire schools to offer 100% attendance awards Pirate’s Play Centre of Sherwood, Nottingham, is teaming up with primary schools in the local area to provide an incentive scheme which will reward excellent school attendance. Pupils at the schools involved who show a record of 100% attendance each term will be treated to a free pass to Pirate’s Play Centre,

Sherwood’s popular play, party and laser centre. K Kerr, Manager of Pirate’s Play Centre, said: “We hope this scheme will be a great incentive which will encourage children to attend school with a positive attitude. As we have top-class café facilities at Pirate’s, serving specialty tea and freshly ground coffee with a brand new menu for 2015, we hope the free passes will be something that the parents and carers who ensure their child’s good attendance can enjoy as much as their children do.” Pirate's Play Centre has a junior play structure with giant astra-slide, sky glide and little tykes car track, with separate toddler and baby areas.
