The Family Grapevine When I started The Family Grapevine I wanted to create the magazine that I wish I had had when my children were younger. A good quality one-stop-shop of information and ideas for families that saves looking out for leaflets, scouring local newspapers, relying on word of mouth and endlessly trawling the internet for inspiration. I wanted The Family Grapevine to make a difference and help families of all ages and from what lots of you are telling me it does...which is fantastic!! Bug Busting beats head lice!

A frustrating reality for many families is that children can catch head lice over and over again from the time they start under-5 group activities. Lice and nits particularly affect 7 to 11 year olds as well as other family members. Even when they understand that catching head lice is nothing to do with poor hygiene, and not a serious health hazard, parents despair when they continually find new lice after treating their children promptly.

Community Hygiene Concern (CHC) is the only UK charity dedicated to beating head lice and we run the Bug Busting detection programme to help children, parents, schools and community health staff. We developed the fluorescent yellow Bug Buster comb and Bug Busting method specifically for easy detection of head lice by parents, and the re-usable Bug Buster Kit for cure. A single kit serves a family for years.

Bug Busting Days Work!

All over the country parents and schools are working together and tackling the problem with Bug Busting Days. The day is a detection day and every child takes a special Bug Busting Comb home for parents to check all the family. If there are head lice, just go online and order your Bug Busting Kit it will be with you in a couple of days. Teaching packs and combs are available for schools.

It has proved its worth in independent clinical trials. ‘Whole-school’ participation in the Bug Busting Days is commended by the Departments of Health and Education. In areas where children’s centres and schools take part, the stigma and cost is reduced and families get on top of the problem.

Fostering For many young people who are unable to live with their own family, fostering gives them the chance to experience family life. They may have led very unstable lives where their own feelings and needs may have been overlooked by family problems and it is very reassuring for them to be cared for by people who can provide support and stability at a very vulnerable time in their lives.

We urgently need foster carers who can provide a good and safe standard of care for children aged 0 to 18 years; promoting their health, development and achievement.

Our children come from many different backgrounds and we need carers from all ethnic origins to care for them; children benefit from living with families who share their backgrounds, culture, language and religion.

Jake (5) is a very sociable boy who enjoys outdoor activities.

He likes school and although he is a little behind his peers, he is an enthusiastic learner who likes to receive praise for his good work.

He can be mischievous, but responds well to firm boundaries and clear indications of what is and is not acceptable.

Sophie (7) adores playing both indoors and out. She has a bright smile and a lovely laugh; she can be quiet at times and often appears to have a lot on her mind. Sophie enjoys school and makes friends easily. Her speech is slightly delayed and although she is 6-12 months behind her peers, she is progressing well.

The thought of keeping the family happily occupied throughout the summer holidays can be a bit daunting, but with a bit of planning you can make it a brilliant time for all the family without spending a fortune!

Football in the Community

Make Your Own Scrap/Craft Store - Collect boxes, tubes, paper, card and

wrapping papers, crayons, felt tips, paint, glue/masking tape, fabrics, ribbon, shiny things etc. Charity shops and car boots are good places to try, they’re also great for dressing up clothes, cheap toys and pocket-money shopping!

Get Out n About - lots of local events are FREE! Walks and bike rides in woods and near streams with a picnic are popular or visit a new park.

Make a Den - Use a sheet or blanket over chairs, a table, bunk beds or

whatever you have. Indoors or out children of all ages love playing in dens especially with cushions, a teaset and a picnic! A little tent is also great!

Story Boxes - Decorate the inside of a shoe box with paper or paint as a

treasure island, farm, garage, shop, zoo, space ship...the list is endless! Cut one side to drop down or put the box on its side, add cotton wool for clouds, sand set in pva for a beach, silver wrapping paper with dark blue sky and silver stars for a space ship, shredded yellow paper makes great straw for a stable, smaller boxes can be shop counters, covered cardboard tubes can be towers for a castle...you get the idea! All these need then are little figures and lots of imagination! Older children might need help cutting out windows, doors, draw bridges etc, younger ones will obviously need more help and may get frustrated if its too complicated, so keep it simple.

Boxes - Small boxes become robots, cars, rockets, animals, provide some sparkly, shiny bits and who knows what they’ll turn out to be! Shoe boxes make great beds for dolls or teddies or a room with dolls house furniture. Cut doors and windows in big boxes or just leave them!

Make A Theatre - Again use a box on its side,

decorate and make free-standing scenery in card with either the bottom folded for it to stand up or a card stand glued on at the back. Characters can be drawn on card, cut out and stuck on long sticks or canes which slide through holes you will need to cut in the sides of the ‘stage’.

Mobiles - Draw 2D shapes of fish, flowers, monsters etc and cut them out.

Decorate with felt tips, shiny glittery things, tissue paper, ribbons etc punch a hole at the top of each, thread and hang from a coat hanger or branch.

Shells and souvenirs from a holiday or toys can be tied on strings or ribbons, I’m sure you will come up with lots of ideas!

Collages - An interesting collection of bits and pieces is key here and most children do like a bit of bling! Include sticks and leaves from the garden, pasta shapes, decorate a box or tube and you (not children) could spray the finished work with gold or silver spray.

Make a Book - Trim a little bit off A4 paper then fold for the pages. Fold an A4 piece of plain card in half for the cover and slot the pages inside, hold in place with ribbon through the centre and tied on the outside if you can’t staple it safely. It can be a story book, diary, scrapbook about the holidays, friendship book, written in code, art book or a fact book about something they are really interested in e.g. cars, bikes, pets, football, fashion, a band ...whatever they want it to be! Good felt tips, crayons and pens are vital here but you may need pictures from magazines or the internet.

In the Garden - Set up an assault course

with tunnels and jumps or a potted sports with a circuit of timed and different activities, let them have a piece of garden for digging holes or growing veg, barbeques, picnics and eating al fresco are all popular as are sand pits, paddling pools and hose pipes...weather permitting!!

Cooking - Try making or decorating biscuits with dribbly icing and edible bits or make a face with currants for the eyes and a cherry for the nose, make your own pizzas with toppings of your choice on pizza bases, make cakes or cut sandwiches into shapes with cutters then have a picnic, indoors or out!

Broxtowe Play Forum Reopens Broxtowe Play Forum and Resource Centre was delighted to reopen its doors at its brand new premises recently after been shut for two months. Members, supporters and staff came together as the Mayor of Stapleford, Councillor Goff Walt, cut the ribbon and declared the new building open for business.

The Play Forum is a non-profit making registered charity. It aims to provide either free or low cost materials, equipment and services to groups or individuals working with children and young people, in play activities within the borough. Members include groups such as youth groups, after school groups, pre-schools, uniform groups, child-minders, Sure-Start and the Short Breaks Pathfinder Project.

At present they help support play activities in the borough for over thirteen thousand children and work closely with other play forums within the county to promote and enhance access to play for all children.

Some of you may have even joined in one of their craft activities at one of the summer Play Days around the Borough or at the Hemlock Happening.

With the help of Broxtowe Borough Council, the Forum has moved to the Wesley Chapel, Wesley Place, Nottingham Road, Stapleford Inside you’ll find an art and craft materials shop; play, sports, and craft equipment hire, office services and their fabulous scrap store. The charity also offers craft and idea training workshops free of charge and aims to provide training workshops for play providers and parents with disabled children. Westwood Toddler Group has been running for over 30 years, but sadly due to decreasing numbers we are facing closing our doors. We are a friendly small group of local parents and child minders who meet at Westwood URC church for play, a cup of tea and a chat. Chances are, if you have young children who aren’t yet school age you’ll have seen some of our members walking around Jacksdale and Westwood, so we thought we’d tell you a bit about why we love this group, and why you (if you have children aged 0-5!) should come and join us.

Babies will be able to enjoy the fun, out of the sun, in our air conditioned environment with its baby rockers and bright colours while the while the crawlers can enjoy the small climb and slide” says Sarah, beaming! As well she might...its going to be brilliant!

When your child first starts school its a big change to your family life and can be an unsettling and worrying time, especially if its your eldest child. Will they be happy, make friends and enjoy the schoolwork? And as well as worrying about your child, the process of choosing and applying to a school seems complicated and daunting.

Getting the facts!

Talk to other parents about the local schools but remember every child, and parent, is different and what is right for one child might not be right for yours.

Ring your Schools Admission team on 01623 433433 for Mansfield & Ashfield 0115 854 6161 for Broxtowe and ask for a copy of the ‘Admissions to School: Guide for Parents’ booklet and talk through anything you are not sure of. How to help your child As parents there are things we can do to help our children love school and make the most of their education.

Visit the school and class teacher with your child as many times as you can so your child is happy and confident about starting.

Find out adults’ names and what will happen on the first day. Talk this through with your child so they know what to expect.

Listen to worries they may have but talk positively about going to school and try not to pass on any of your own concerns.

Ask the school if there are questions you can’t answer and also let them know of any fears, special needs or medical conditions your child has.

Help your child develop the skills they need to be independent such as dressing themselves, playing with other children, going to the toilet on their own and looking after their belongings.

Visit the library and read storybooks about starting school to your child.

Getting children to school on time in the mornings can be stressful and stressed, tired children find it hard to settle, enjoy school and do their best. Get the whole family into school bedtime and morning routines before the start day, the last thing any of you need is a tired, morning panic!

A-Z Sport & Leisure NEW YOUTH THEATRE JUNIOR GROUP OPENS IN BESTWOOD New Youth Theatre is proud to announce the launch of their second Junior Group in Nottingham.

From September 2010 classes will now be held in both West Bridgford & Bestwood. The production that the children will be working towards is “Alice in Wonderland” which both groups will stage at the Bonington Theatre in Arnold.

Let your children join Alice’s madcap adventures in Wonderland as she chases the White Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with the Tweedles, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar, and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game!

There will be two groups working on this production. A “Tiny Tots” class (aged 3-5) and a “Junior” class (aged 6-11). Rehearsals will take place on Tuesday Evenings in West Bridgford or Wednesday Evenings in Bestwood and the productions will be staged at the Bonington Theatre in November.

The New Youth Theatre concept is simple. Children are taught how to develop and improve their performing arts skills whilst rehearsing for a fully staged musical . This unique approach to musical theatre brings children of all ages together to enjoy learning new skills, have fun and be onstage!

We all worry about our children around pools and in the sea so as parents we should encourage them to learn to swim and develop water safety skill as early as possible in their life – it is an essential life skill. Here are some top tips of what to look for when choosing swimming lessons: 1. Waiting lists - choose a centre that can accommodate your children when you want!

2. Start your kids as young as possible, ask about mother & toddler sessions.

3. Busy parents need flexibility so pick a pool with plenty on offer.

4. Quality standards count - teachers should be ASA qualified, as a minimum.

5. It’s great if there are badges and certificates to collect.

6. Are there other water based sports to try like snorkeling, diving etc 7. Ask your friends with kids to recommend a good local lesson programme.

Also important is protection from the harmful rays of the sun. Ultraviolet radiation, or UV, is present in sunlight. Sunburn is a sign that your skin has received too much.

Some harmful sun facts: • 90% off all skin cancer can be attributed to the sun • Less than one third of UK children are adequately protected against the sun • Most people receive 50-80% of their lifetime exposure by the age of 18.

• Most skin cancer appears in adulthood, yet most of the damage occurs in childhood.

• Just one bad blistering sunburn during childhood can double the risk of skin cancer later in life.

• UV rays bounce off sand, concrete and water - and the reflecting rays can cause skin damage.

• A white cotton T-shirt blocks out only about 5% of the rays, and even less when wet

The Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) shows how well a fabric protects your skin from solar UV - ratings range from 15 to 50.
