Last summer I took the Family Grapevine to lots of play events and shows and had a really great time promoting everyone in the magazine and meeting loads of lovely families who came to say hello. I was understandably thrilled then to hear about two new, but very different, baby shows happening this year...and yes the FG will be there! You can find all the information about the Pregnancy & Baby Show at Beeston in April on page 9 and The Nottingham Baby Fayre at Bulwell in June for under 5’s on the back cover. See you there!

Local Services Family Internet Safety In an ideal world parents are able to keep an eye on the Internet content which their children see by placing the computer in a family room, like the living room. However, in reality parents are usually multi-tasking and the children are only a click or two away from seeing Internet ‘nasties’. If this strikes a chord with you, then read on and put some Family Internet Safety in place to act as a safety net for your family.

General principles First of all, each user must have their own user account that they can login to. ‘User Accounts’ set-up is found in the ‘Control Panel’ of Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. Children’s accounts should be ‘Limited’ or ‘Standard user’ accounts. This will stop children from installing software and interfering with system files and settings. ‘Administrator’ accounts must be password protected. It is preferable to turn ‘Guest’ accounts off unless these are properly set-up.

Windows Live Family Safety As part of the ‘Windows Live Essentials’ suite, Microsoft have added ‘Windows Live Family Safety 2011’, free to download from: http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials This will enable you to remotely apply the same parental controls to Windows Vista and Windows 7 machines by linking an on-line profile to the user account on the PC. To manage the on-line profile, you will require a ‘Windows Live ID’. If you don’t already have one, you can get one by clicking ‘Sign up’ at: https://login.live.com Now, go to each machine that you want to enable ‘Parental Controls’ on. From the ‘Control Panel’, select ‘Parental Controls’ and scroll-down to ‘Additional controls’. Select the provider as ‘Windows Live Family Safety’. Click on one of the user accounts that you want to monitor and this will take you via the ‘Windows Live – sign in’ page to the ‘Family Safety’ settings. You can then associate the user on the PC to the corresponding on-line profile.

The profile can be adjusted for age-related web-filtering, activity reporting, game restrictions and time limits. Experiment with the settings available, but try not to set strict, immovable rules as children will need to make educated choices in order to grow into responsible on-line users.

Get Growing!

* Hide a trail of clues around the

house/garden leading to the eggs!

Pictures for the little ones, rhyming or cryptic clues for the older ones. * Hold a scavenger hunt with a list of Eastery items to find or an online Easter fact hunt for the older ones. * Set a paper trail of egg or chick pictures leading to the ‘treasure’, add actions for older kids to complete before they can move on. * Tie wool/ribbon to each egg and hide the eggs.Trail the wools around the house, end at the kid’s bedrooms.

Craft Ideas

* Streamer Rings. Cut out the centre of a paper plate and tie or staple bright streamers of paper/fabric/ribbons etc to 3/4 of the ring. The kids can run in the breeze using the space as a handle. * Pop-up Cards. For an outer & inner fold 2 A4 pieces of card in half. Cut the inner card 2cm as shown, push the centre section through & press to form a ‘step’. Glue the cards together so the ‘step’ pops up inside. Decorate inside & out! Draw an egg/flower/figure etc on separate card (approx 10cm high), colour, cut out & stick to the ‘step’.

* Fill large plant pots with compost

and let them sow sweet pea or runner bean seeds. They’ll look great growing up canes by the back door! Buy a little watering can and they’ll never be dry!! * Give them a growbag or bit of garden and seeds or plants to grow. Veg they can pick and eat later is great! * Draw faces on boiled eggs for Easter, when eaten fill the shell with cotton wool, dampen with water, sprinkle with cress seeds and watch the hair grow! * Place carrot tops in dishes of pebbles and water, they’ll sprout in days!

Education Is your child Dyslexic?

10% of the population are thought to be dyslexic, 4% have severe dyslexia. New research suggests that 55% of children are failing their SAT’s due to undiagnosed dyslexia or specific learning difficulties.

Some Indicators of Dyslexia:

finds spelling difficult, reverses letters e.g. b for d or was for saw. Spells the same word several different ways in a piece of work

learns how to spell a word one week and has forgotten it the next

has lots of ideas, but can’t put them down on paper

has difficulty remembering sequences such as the days of the week, the alphabet and times tables

is disorganised at home and school, constantly loses and forgets items and information

�

in other ways a bright and alert child

frustration has led to behavioural or emotional difficulties

Sport & Leisure NEW YOUTH THEATRE MANSFIELD & NOTTINGHAM A genuine opportunity for children to develop their singing, dancing and acting skills in fully staged performances!

Youngsters in Mansfield & Nottingham are being urged to take to the stage with local theatre company – New Youth Theatre.

The New Youth Theatre concept is simple. Children between the ages of 3-16 years are taught how to develop and improve their performing arts skills whilst rehearsing for a fully staged musical each term. There are three shows a year and the shows are performed at local theatres. This unique approach to musical theatre brings children of all ages together to enjoy learning new skills, have fun and be onstage!

New Youth Theatre are looking for enthusiastic children interested in taking part in “Little Shop of Horrors” or “The Wizard of Oz” with rehearsals starting in April 2011. Taster sessions are being held in March/April.

This year we will once again be fielding four senior Saturday league teams, with our 1st XI playing in Division A of the South Notts Cricket League, togther with two Sunday sides playing both league and friendly cricket. Indoor net sessions for all senior players have already started in the Sobers Hall at Trent Bridge on Thursday nights from 8-9pm. These sessions run until April and any prospective new players are as always most welcome to attend. Outdoor net sessions commence at our ground on The Strand at the end of April and continue throughout the season on a Tuesday evening..

We also run a thriving Youth Section at Attenborough with four junior teams ranging from Under 11s to Under 15s, as well as two Kwik Cricket sides. Indoor practice sessions have been taking place throughout the winter and the outdoor season begins at the end of April.
