It is time for our church to leave the building as an act of worship. Not too long ago the leadership of the church decided that it is important for us to make serving in the community an act of worship to the God Who has given us so much. We are continually tweaking the structure of our Service Sunday and this time we will be having a full worship service at 10:00 am and will send people out into the community at 11:00 am. If you have not already done so, please sign up at the Information Center as soon as possible so that we have an accurate count of how many to expect for each project and to make sure we have enough food. If you have any questions or are wondering what the whole Service Sunday about, please contact Chris Snow in the church office. Bites of Bread from Bob When I am looking at Facebook posts, I usually just skip by the ones that look as if they are political. (I am sorry if that was you.) While there may be some factual information in the political posts, I find that they often lack a Christ-like attitude toward the opposing political position. They often have a less than loving attitude toward people with opinions other than their own. Jesus called us to pray for our enemies. Opposing parties are painted as demonic and there appears to be little loving concern for them. Even though I usually skip over political posts on Facebook, I was drawn into one because it was posted by our son. It was titled, “7 Things Christians Need to Remember about Politics.” The article encourages us to approach politics “in a way that models the teachings of Jesus.” So below you will find those 7 things the article thinks we need to remember, with only mild editing. 1. Both political parties go to church. Here at FCC we have political opinions that run the gamut. What I know is that all along the political spectrum we have people who are also deeply committed Christians. 2. Political talk radio and cable “news” only want ratings. We need to be careful stewards of the information we hear. Before you pass on a thought, make sure you have done your factchecking. 3. Those who argue over politics don’t love their country more than others. Some people would just find something else to argue about if it were not about politics. II Timothy 2:23: “The Lord’s

servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to everyone, an apt teacher, patient, correcting with gentleness.” Thinking your party’s platform is unflawed is a mistake. We are simply mistaken if we think that any one party has not been influenced by other than pure motives. Make sure to look at your party’s entire platform rather than just one or two “hot-button” issues that the media highlights. Scripture tells us to pray for our governing leaders (II Timothy 2:1-4) and to respect those in authority. (Romans 13:1-7) Whether or not we are in agreement with our political leaders, we are called to pray for their wisdom and direction. Don’t be paranoid. The country is not going to be destroyed if your candidate loses. One of my little hobbies has been reading the biographies of our past presidents. Many time I have noticed that the pendulum of both extremes has a way of settling somewhere back in the middle. Stop saying, “This is the most important election in the history of our nation.” The article concludes saying, “It’s not. The most important election in the history of our nation was when Abraham Lincoln was elected president. (Bob: and/or his reelection in the midst of the Civil War.) Before that, we thought it was okay to own people. Every generation thinks it’s living in the most important moment in history. We’re not, our parents were not and our children probably won’t be. And that’s OK.”

God Bless, Pastor Bob

Thanks for all the phone calls, cards, prayers, support and for all the wonderful and delicious meals that were provided for Phil and me. The evening before my surgery I was sitting in my chair and looked up and felt the presence of Jesus by my side letting me know that everything was going to be okay. What a blessing to know that Jesus is with us in all circumstances.

For Children and Families A Little Light from Laurie

Flurries from Chris

This Sunday is Camp Sunday. Everyone in our church who has participated with regional camps is invited to join us in each worship service for a short time of thanksgiving and celebration. We will sing two favorite camp songs and share a few words about camp. This is also a time to show the congregation our gratitude for supporting our camps. Wear your T-shirts if you have them.

As I was leaving the church after youth group on Sunday I was left thinking about a dynamic of the church that plays a huge role in the faith lives of our youth. The first is that of the overwhelming support that our youth have within this church.

My favorite part of camp is always the children, but I have found the location to be my Sanctuary, especially in times of busy-ness. Camp Whitebranch, near McKenzie Bridge, is a special place to me. It's not necessarily the camping experience that ranks it high on my list, but just being there. I love walking in the woods to the falls. The sound of the rushing water, like God's voice, beckons me. His whispers rustle the leaves, calming me and quieting my thoughts. No deadlines, schedules, or traffic. No other voices calling me but His. I hear His words with each breath I take: "Come to me, Child. Be still. I am here. Breathe." It's a place I can break free of the chaos and just be in His presence. I cannot go there often, but I am learning to bring that peace to me, wherever I am. Where is your Sanctuary with God? With September comes the beginning of busy schedules that carry us along a steady stream of events right until the end of the year. Before you dive into the flow, I challenge you to find your Sanctuary. You may not be able to physically go to this place, but in your mind spend a few minutes there each day to center yourself with God. I love sharing this with children during Children’s Church. Learning to spend a few minutes each day in quiet time with God is an important skill to have, and one we, as adults, often overlook. May His Grace rain down on you and cover you with peace. Laurie

*Kick-off potluck for 3rd, 4th, & 5th grades on Sunday, September 23, at 1:00 pm. The picnic will be in lower Bush Pasture Park.

Many of you may not be aware but only a couple years ago there were two different bands: The AM Praise Team (AMPT) and the Youth Band. After some of the youth began to play with AMPT, that it was decided to merge the two groups into one. This has set up a relationship between the youth and the rest of the team to encourage musical development and sharing of talents. Within the team we also have a couple of parent-child combos, which have been encouraging and exciting to watch. Through the Praise Team we have also had youth become active in the background, whether it is setting up and tearing down the equipment or helping in the sound booth. The youth have become a regular part in our worship services. All of these relationships go beyond the music and have moved into caring about each other’s spiritual and emotional well-being. Our youth have also been supported wonderfully by all of you who give regularly to the general fund of the church. I am thankful that we have a youth budget that allows some flexibility when the youth go on activities that do cost money and we can make sure everyone can attend even if everyone can’t pay the whole amount. This helps the entire group grow together instead of creating divisions between those who can afford it and who can’t. This is tremendously helpful because it is on some of these outings that our youth are able to grow closer together as a group and create more in-depth discussions in class. Peace in Christ, Chris Snow In an effort to decrease paper and plastic waste we have moved to using reusable dishes and silverware. We are still in need of dishwasher-safe plates and silverware. Contact Chris Snow for more information.

Reconciliation Offering “Planting Seeds of Hope” is the theme for the Reconciliation Fund and this offering is being received on October 7. The Reconciliation offering supports ministries and programs that address the causes and effects of racial injustice and prejudice in present-day society. Some funds go to training Disciples for greater racial understanding and equality. Other funds support community-action programs such as the one in Columbus, Ohio, called BREAD (Building Responsibility, Equality and Dignity). BREAD ministers with youth in the juvenile detention system. Here in the Pacific Northwest, Reconciliation funds have supported local church outreach, such as Yakama Christian Mission, Gomer’s House (a transition home in Portland for people overcoming addictive behaviors), or the annual Christmas mission to Sonora, Mexico organized by Peniel Ministries. For more information visit their website at www.reconciliationministry.org.

We are looking for a few people who would be willing to do some calling on our homebound and hospitalized members. If you think this is something that you would like to do, please contact Pastor Bob.

This and That All-Church Rummage Sale

Reserve the Date!

Mark Your Calendars for November 9-10!

During the March “Grand Night for Singing” we asked if you would be interested in hosting a gospel group at Salem First Christian. The vote was YES.

Time to search high and low in your nooks and crannies for items to donate to the all-church rummage sale coming up in November. This sale is an annual event sponsored by the Christian Women's Fellowship (CWF). The proceeds are used to support the CWF mission and project funds.

Richard Adams heard the request and has secured Knox Brothers Gospel Band from the Albany area. They are giving a concert on Sunday, November 11, at 6:00 pm in our Sanctuary.

Please note: some items just do not sell and cannot be accepted for the Rummage Sale. These unwanted items are:

This is a great time to invite your friends, neighbors and all the people you meet in the grocery line to attend a wonderful musical evening.

More information on this wonderful musical group will be in future Scrolls.

Your clean sorted labeled donations can be dropped off in the northeast corner of the Fellowship Hall starting Monday, September 24! Hold all large items until the week of November 5. (Items should fit in elevator and can be lifted). We will gladly accept help sorting rummage each Monday in October from 9:30 am until around noon. If you have questions or need clarification, please contact one of the co-chairs for this event: Lois Kinkaid, 503-362-6594, lokin2@q.com Eileen Shinn, 503-581-4768, shinnce@peoplepc.com Rosealee Clemens, 503-393-4366, rosealeeclemens@yahoo.com Thank you.

Check It Out! Pastor Bob, in his sermon on Sunday, mentioned Leslie Weatherhead’s book, “The Will of God.” Pastor Bob was referring to Weatherhead’s discussion about the will of God being intentional, as it was in Creation, or the will of God which is worked out through the circumstances of our lives, as in the story of Noah. If you have not read Weatherhead’s book, “The Will of God,”a you may want to check it out. Only 55 pages long, it is not a daunting book. It may answer some of your questions about how the will of God is working in your life. You will find copies showcased on the back shelf of the Library. Betty Charnholm Librarian
