“Be the Fragrance of God in a Broken World” Saturday, March 14 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at Oregon Christian Convention Center Bus leaves at 8:00 am from the church parking lot. Cost: $10 each, includes lunch. Sign up at the Information Center. All women and young ladies from Freshman in high school to 99 years of age are welcome to attend. Flower Design Craft– Instructor Monique Ownby, retired florist Dig out those dusty silk flowers and greenery from the back of your closet. Grab a 12” or shorter ceramic, glass, or wood vase. Bring half a baggie of marbles, sand or decorative rock. You will need a pair of wire cutters and one or two yards of your favorite ribbon. We will supply some extra silk flowers for those who do not have a closet.

Bites of Bread from Bob We are now well into the midst of Lent. I am preaching a series on "What's all this about...." This coming Sunday will be about baptism, then forgiveness and then simplicity. They all relate to Lent. But how, you may ask, are pretzels related to Lent. Christians, in the latter days of the Roman empire, especially in North Africa and Southern Italy, began the custom of making a special bread dough during Lent. There are numerous different legends about origins of pretzels. One story is of a monk in Italy that made them as treats for children when they had memorized their prayers. The dough consisted only of flour, salt and water (since fats, eggs and milk were forbidden by Lenten observances). The bakers shaped them into the form of two arms crossed which was a common prayer posture in the early church. They called the little braids "little arms" and church members ate them

during Lent to keep the fast and to remind them of the Lenten disciplines. At the end of Lent, pretzels disappeared until the next Ash Wednesday. In the latter Middle Ages, the Germans coined the term "Brezel" from which comes our English word "pretzel." The oldest known picture of a liturgical pretzel may be seen in a fifth century manuscript located in the Vatican. Not until the late 19th century was the pretzel adopted as an allyear snack and, unfortunately, by the 20th century, its Lenten significance was all but forgotten. I have a bowl of pretzels in my office. Come by and have one. I promise not to make you recite a prayer.

New Banner in Chalice Entry
March 29 We are going to shake things up a little. We would love to see everyone bring an item for the MarionPolk Food Share bins. This Service Sunday we will be asking everyone who has not gone through the “Abuse Risk Reduction Training” to go to the Fellowship Hall and attend this necessary training. We live in an ever changing world and we want everyone in our church family to have the tools necessary to reduce the risk of abuse and protect themselves. The training consists of a video and paperwork to complete. If you have completed the training, we have projects for you: Family Building Blocks Quilt Tying There will also be activities for all the children as well. Lunch will be served after the training and projects have been completed. You will not want to miss this important Service Sunday!

Condolences Bobbie Havey, daughter of Bob Dickerson, passed away on February 14. She resided in Pacific City. Our prayers and sympathies go out to Bob and his family. Vernice Bye passed away on February 18 at the age of 102. Our sympathies and prayers go out to her son, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and greatgreat-grandchildren. There will be a private, family service as requested by Vernice. Margaret Brutscher passed away on February 26. Our heartfelt prayers and sympathies go out to Elton, husband; Barbara & Jeff Leisman, daughter and sonin-law and Noah and Elia Leisman, grandchildren. Margaret’s memorial service is Friday, March 6, at 3:00 pm in the Sanctuary.
A Warm Welcome to New Member On March 1, Cassandra Lane-Butler came forward at the conclusion of the 9:30 am service to accept Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Cassandra and her husband Allen just started attending Salem First Christian Church and we are excited to get to know them better.

The month of March! • Saturday, March 7 (9:00 am) - ALL-CHURCH CLEAN UP DAY! • Sunday, March 8 - The youth will be leading a prayer at the 9:30 am service. If they could be at church at 9:20 am to do a quick run-through, that would be great. Youth Group: We will go to Riverfront park, weather permitting. • Saturday, March 14 (9:00 am-3:00 pm) WOMEN'S RETREAT! All women, 9th grade and above, are welcome! • Sunday, March 15 - Youth group: Art/craft day • There will be no youth group over spring break (March 22 and March 29). However, we will be voting on our youth activity next week in Sunday School that will take place over spring break -more information to come. • Sunday, March 29 - Service Sunday! Bread of Life Cafe at 9:00 am and one worship service at 10:00 am. No Sunday School or youth group.
Saturday, March 7 is the ALL-CHURCH Clean Up day, at 9 a.m. Any help in the nursery and children’s classrooms would be greatly appreciated. Sunday, March 8, the children will be leading the congregation in a happy song and the Lord’s Prayer at the beginning of the 11:00 am service. Please come join us if you can. Sunday, March 15, is our final session of Strengthening Families. Even if you have missed some classes, or not attended any, please join us for a potluck dinner and some lively interaction as we practice skills to strengthen our families. Potluck dinner is at 5:30 pm; please bring a dish to share. Saturday, April 18, JYF outing to the Oregon Garden in Silverton. Plan now to attend this favorite event in honor of Earth Day. We will meet at the church at 10:30, dine with the Buckmaster family about 11, then off to the Garden from about 12-3 for some fun in the dirt. Please dress appropriately for the weather and plan to get dirty. July 19-23, is Vacation Bible School. This year’s theme is EVEREST: Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power. So, mark your calendars, spread the word, plan to bring your kids and VOLUNTEER! There’s a video game I was introduced to where the object is to drive the vehicle of your choice full speed over everything in your path to an unknown destination. Points are awarded for performing stunts, your distance and by running over certain objects. Doesn’t life feel like that sometimes? We plow through as fast as we can to see how far we get while performing for others? During this time of Lent, we are reminded to slow down and breathe; to take a fresh look at and clear away the things that tempt us away from Jesus and to seek approval from Him only. Jesus is our destination. Take time to enjoy the journey to the cross. Enjoying the journey, Laurie
Please let me know of events, activities, sports, musical productions, etc. that your children are involved in. We would like to pray for them and I will attend as many events as I am able to! The youth are continuing their series on prayer in Sunday School. Every Sunday, in addition to the lesson, they form small prayer groups and sometimes have challenges to work on throughout the week. I encourage members of the congregation to pray for the youth as they continue to grow in their relationship with God through prayer. Also, parents and grandparents can talk about prayer with them - ask if they have a prayer challenge, what that is, and how they are doing with it. Invite them to pray at the dinner table or with you at home. The more support, mentoring and teaching they receive the better! Have a blessed week, Riane

Check It Out! Thanks to Claire Widener, two books have recently been added to the library. “Dispatches From the Front” by Tim Keesee and “Treasuring Christ When Your Hands are Full” by Gloria Furman. The Pacific Northwest Association of Libraries offers books to be given to member libraries with the requirement being a book review to put in their quarterly newsletter. Claire has graciously given of her time to read two books and submit book reviews four times a year. In this way several books have been added to our library. Other books Claire has reviewed are: “Mercy Come Morning” by Lisa Tawn Bergren “When Work and Family Collide” by Andy Stanley “Miracle for Jen” by Linda Barrick “Sarai” by Jill Eileen Smith. These books plus others Claire has reviewed are set out on the front counter of the library for your reading enjoyment. Do Check Them Out and thank Claire for her gift of time next time you see her. Do you ever work with Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network, volunteer or teach Sunday School with children, youth, or vulnerable adults? If so, you need to attend this workshop, along with all staff, board members, Elders, personnel committee members, and Teaching Ministry Team members. The Church Board adopted a revised Policy for Reducing the Risk of Abuse of Children, Youth, Vulnerable Persons and Adults that requires training for many and encourages training for all. If you ever teach adult Sunday School classes, please participate. Parents, guardians, and grandparents will find this valuable as well. Baskets of Love Many couples with newborn babies are so busy! Some may not know many people within our church family or would rather not have a baby shower here at the church. The Caring Ministry, as part of the church family, would like to offer these families a Basket of Love. These baskets would include handmade gifts as well as new baby items.
