Elegant and timeless, this 1-carat round diamond pendant in 10-kt white gold from La Maison d’Or is one of their top holiday recommendations, the perfect keepsake to unwrap this season.

La Maison d’Or LA MAISON D’OR OFFERS JOY TO THE WORLD

“We are in a joyful profession,” Brent Harden, President of the family-owned and operated La Maison d’Or, rejoices, “bringing people and their loved ones together over generations. We help our guests create beautiful memories with the people they love.”

He knows whereof he speaks: Brent proudly stores a solid gold ID bracelet, once worn by his company founder-father, in the top drawer of his bedroom bureau. “It never fails to amaze me how much a piece of fine jewellery can really matter to someone,” he adds, “especially when it’s from a loved one.”

Finely crafted keepsakes are what La Maison d’Or is all about. Threequarters of their sales, in fact, are attributable to families who have made visits to the store—located in the Place d’Orléans Shopping Centre—a veritable ritual, some going as far back as the immediate post-war period. That’s when Brent’s newly married parents first opened shop. Back then, the store was located in Hawkesbury, of which the sentimental Brent holds fond childhood memories. “I grew up in that store,” he recounts. “My best friends were our watchmaker and staff. People loved the warm and friendly atmosphere.

Today, we proudly continue this tradition. Sitting, talking with our clients, one on one, face to face—and enjoying every minute of it!”

All these years later, hospitality remains a high priority. “When you come and see us,” Brent explains, “you’re greeted with a warm smile, a beverage, and a snack! We ask you to sit down and get to know your needs and dreams. We take the time—which is rare in this fast-paced world—to build the perfect piece that will last for generations to come. After the purchase, we offer our Now & Forever Care service, which is the best jewellery aftercare in Canada. It includes annual inspections, free cleaning at any time, and insurance appraisal updates. It’s fun, exciting, and we love it!”

Brent Harden, President of La Maison d’Or, continues his family’s legacy of craftsmanship and connection, offering generations of clients fine jewellery and heartfelt service.
M“We are in a joyful profession, bringing people and their loved ones together over generations.”

Especially around the holidays, when the store enjoys some of its highest annual traffic. It’s not simply the necessity of giftgiving that inspires people to drop in, nor the welcome vibe exuded by the entire staff. Every year, Brent and company ensure that there’s plenty from which their clientele can choose. “We always plan to bring our customers the latest in the fine jewellery world: trending pieces such as coloured gemstones and stunning Canadian diamond jewellery, hand-selected by me and Rita, our team manager.”

Not to mention custom-designed rings, pendants, bracelets, and earrings. Every year, La Maison d’Or fashions over 400 of these items, proudly using Canadian gold and labour.

In addition, customers are invited to check out La Maison d’Or’s ever-helpful giftgiving guide, which is updated daily. It’s brimming with in-stock items in a variety of

styles, suited for every budget. Each item is ready to take home, a mere purchase from being slipped into a stocking or slid under the Christmas tree.

And as always, every customer is assured that they’re walking away with a gift of the highest possible quality. Every piece at La Maison d’Or is subject to a rigorous examination process. Each item of their inventory undergoes a thorough quality control procedure. It’s conducted in the fully operational gem lab set up right within the store, by a full-time expert dedicated to this task alone.

But La Maison d’Or’s big-heartedness extends beyond the boundaries of accommodating its customers. For years, the business has been a regular supporter of a number of area charities. This year, La Maison d’Or bought 90 winter coats from the recently closed Huson’s Bay Company, which it generously offered to local shelters.

“We truly get it! We understand what jewellery means to the people buying it, how it’s so much more than just metal and stones.”

It also continues to extend a hand to the Wabano Center for Aboriginal Health, and has made donations to organizational events, including the Mental Health Gala for CHEO and Black Tie Bingo for Bruyere.

The company’s first focus, though, is the buyer, whether La Maison d’Or has long played a part in their family history or they’re first-timers just beginning their own tradition. “We truly get it!” says Brent. “We understand what jewellery means to the people buying it, how it’s so much more than just metal and stones. We also strive to make the shopping experience as memorable as possible. We even have a fun collection of tumbled stones from Brazil that we gift to children who come in with their parents, which always reminds me of my early days with my dad.”

“Buying jewellery should be fun and special,” he concludes. “We will forever and always go above and beyond to make it so!”

Rita Elias, team manager at La Maison d’Or, helps clients find or design the perfect piece, providing the personal care and expertise that define the store’s warm reputation.

Lansdowne 2.0 Costs

Drop as Redevelopment Moves Forward

Ottawa taxpayers are getting good news: the Lansdowne 2.0 project will cost less than expected. In October, Mayor Mark Sutcliffe announced the City’s annual cost is now estimated at $4.3 million, down from $5 million projected in 2023. Lower construction costs and higher air rights revenue bring taxpayers $418 million in value for a $130 million investment.

The redevelopment includes a new arena, rebuilt stadium stands, greener public spaces, and $14 million for affordable housing, all without long-term operating costs for the City. Construction begins in 2025, with major components, like the event centre, expected by 2028.

EVOLVING TOGETHER

Northern Alliance has always moved quickly. Founded in Ottawa in 2021 the organization has grown into a leading force in Eastern Canada’s real estate landscape. Built on collaboration, education, and empowerment, it continues to redefine what a modern real estate company can be. Its team has grown to 410 agents, adding 118 new agents this year.

Inside Northern Alliance’s Continued RisedERSHIP

From left to right, Northern Alliance’s leaders Marc Papineau, Jason Spartalis, Sara Khoury, Steve Alexopoulos, Todd Gingras, Tarek El Attar, Cris Karson, Erika Gingras, Scott Moore and JF Perras.

The Northern Alliance movement has taken off,” says Tarek El Attar, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder.

“We are onboarding new partners weekly and are now fully bilingual, with agents from Toronto to Quebec City serving clients across Eastern Canada.”

The pace of expansion has been remarkable, but what stands out most is how connected those agents feel from day one. At the center of Northern Alliance’s culture is a commitment to mentorship, shared learning, and team success. “We bring new agents into the fold right away through weekly trainings, webinars, and organizational events that span both provinces,” says El Attar. “The culture of collaboration encourages experienced agents to reach out to our newest additions. We are all rewarded through each other’s successes.”

This culture-driven approach has helped Northern Alliance stand apart from traditional brokerages, where competition can often take precedence over mentorship. Here, success is viewed as collective. Veteran agents regularly co-host training sessions, lead market panels, and share templates and strategies that newer agents can immediately apply to their business. “We’ve built an environment where knowledge doesn’t stay siloed,” says El Attar. “The goal is for everyone to grow faster together.”

That spirit of partnership has translated into measurable results. This year alone, Northern Alliance partners closed more than 2.3 billion dollars in sales volume. Just three and a half years after launching, the brand has become a national force built on innovation and trust.

“We’ve built an environment where knowledge doesn’t stay siloed. The goal is for everyone to grow faster together.”

A key part of that success lies in its evolving approach to education. “This year, we have continued to raise the bar by focusing on delivering the highest value to realtors through enhanced training and coaching programs,” says El Attar. “We have expanded beyond traditional real estate education to include strategic financial planning, helping agents build sustainable wealth through stock options, passive income opportunities, and long-term investment strategies.”

The model also includes a revenue-sharing system that allows agents to benefit directly from the company’s success. It’s a structure that empowers, motivates, and aligns everyone under one mission: collective achievement.

For Steve Alexopoulos, Broker, Co-Founder, and Team Leader, that hands-on leadership is where the organization truly differentiates itself. “Our coaching approach is intentionally practical and scalable,” he says. “We have built a framework that blends live, field-based coaching with structured onboarding systems so agents receive real-time feedback on key skills like listing presentations, pricing strategies, and negotiation techniques.”

He adds that ongoing accountability plays a major role in driving growth. “Our coaching cadence includes regular one-on-one sessions that focus on goal setting and measurable improvement. It equips agents with the tools, discipline, and support they need to elevate their business in a competitive market.”

At the heart of Alexopoulos’s leadership philosophy is what he calls the human side of success. “What separates a good agent from a great one is the willingness to keep learning,” he says. “In today’s environment, good agents compete, and great agents collaborate. At Northern Alliance, collaboration and knowledge sharing are the lifeblood of our growth.”

That collaborative mindset will take centre stage at Evolv3 2026, Northern Alliance’s upcoming flagship event. Now entering its third year, Evolv3 brings together agents, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders for a day of learning, connection, and forward thinking.

“Building on the incredible momentum of the past two years, Evolv3 2026 is set to be our most impactful event yet,” says El Attar. “We are elevating the experience with expanded networking opportunities and a curated selection of vendors who provide real, practical value to industry professionals.”

More than just a conference, Evolv3 functions as a cultural summit for Northern Alliance, where innovation, strategy, and wellness intersect. The event showcases the brand’s forward-thinking mindset and its commitment to developing agents who are resilient, well-rounded, and equipped for long-term success.

For Sara Khoury, Director of Operations and Event Lead, Evolv3 is about much more than motivation. “My goal is for every attendee to walk away with something truly actionable, not just motivation, but real strategies they can implement to elevate both their business and their mindset,” she says. “Evolv3 has always been about growth in every sense: professional, financial, and personal.”

The event will feature top industry speakers alongside wellness experts and entrepreneurs, creating an atmosphere where authenticity meets strategy. “People leave with fresh insights on how to build sustainable, future-focused real estate businesses, along with a renewed sense of purpose and connection,” Khoury adds.

From local fundraising tournaments to nationwide agent development, Northern Alliance’s vision has remained consistent: build something that lasts. “We see ourselves as stewards of both the business and the community,” says El Attar. “Our success is not just about growth. It’s about helping make our cities better than we found them.”

By 2030, the team expects Northern Alliance to be a defining name in Canadian real estate. Given the organization’s trajectory, that goal no longer feels aspirational. It feels inevitable.

“In today’s environment, good agents compete, and great agents collaborate. At Northern Alliance, collaboration and knowledge sharing are the lifeblood of our growth.”

Tips for a Stress-Free Holiday.

DIY HOLIDAY ATMOSPHERE

Simmer a pot of water with pine needles, cinnamon sticks, and orange peels to create a natural holiday scent. It beats storebought air fresheners and fills your home with seasonal warmth.

ORNAMENT CLEAN UP

If an ornament breaks, forget the broom—press a slice of bread over the mess of shards to pick up even the tiniest slivers of glass. The soft texture traps small fragments that sweeping often misses.

CANDLE COASTERS

HOLIDAYS MADE EASY

Seven clever ways to cut the chaos, costs, and clutter this season.

Place your candles on small mirrors or metal jar lids to protect surfaces from wax drips. The reflection also doubles the candlelight for an elegant holiday glow.

TANGLE-FREE TWINKLE

Wrap Christmas lights around clothing hangers to keep them from tangling in storage. A great way to make use of old hangers, this trick also makes decorating next year much faster. Label each hanger by colour or length to make setup effortless and frustration-free when the holidays roll around again.

ORNAMENT ORGANIZER

Save your egg cartons and use them to store delicate Christmas ornaments. The individual sections keep each piece cushioned and secure, preventing chips or breaks. For larger ornaments, swap in plastic cups or muffin tins for the same snug protection.

TRIM GUIDE

For every foot of tree height, plan on using about 100 lights, 10 feet of garland, and 20 regular sized ornaments. This quick rule of thumb keeps your décor balanced and full without overbuying.

WRAP STATION

Use an old wine crate to neatly store your wrapping paper rolls. Slide a cardboard tube around the paper to stop it from coming loose. The dividers in most crates keep rolls upright and easy to grab, while the rustic look adds charm to your storage area.

Brookstreet Hotel

HOW OTTAWA’S WEST-END LUXURY DESTINATION IS REDEFINING GUEST EXPERIENCE THIS SEASON

One year after completing its transformative renovation, Brookstreet Hotel continues to evolve through quiet refinement rather than reinvention.

The four-diamond property in Kanata has leaned into what it does best: offering an experience that feels effortlessly elevated while still warm and familiar.

“We’ve focused on elevating our guest experience through thoughtful enhancements,” says Mark Nisbett, VP Sales and Operations at Brookstreet Hotel. “We’ve expanded our wellness offerings with new spa therapies, upgraded our technology to streamline check-in and support personalized service, and introduced new culinary options in our eateries that highlight local flavours.”

These updates are not about following trends but about deepening the connection with guests, staff, and the surrounding community. “The goal is to create a seamless blend of comfort, luxury, and memorable experiences for every guest.”

In recent months, Brookstreet has continued to invest in wellness and technology as guest expectations evolve. Travel today is as much about restoration as it is about exploration, and wellness now sits at the center of the Brookstreet experience. “Guests are increasingly seeking personalized experiences and wellness-centered amenities,” Nisbett notes. “To meet this shift, we’ve expanded our wellness facilities, introduced more tailored service options, and enhanced digital engagement for easy booking and communication.”

Beyond its spa, the hotel continues to expand its leisure and lifestyle offerings, including electric vehicle charging stations, complimentary bicycles for adults and children, and both indoor and outdoor saltwater pools. These details reflect Brookstreet’s focus on a holistic guest experience that supports relaxation, recreation, and convenience in equal measure.

Au Naturel Spa at Brookstreet is a full-service wellness retreat offering advanced therapies, luxurious treatments, and a serene atmosphere designed for total relaxation.

Technology plays a growing role in that goal. Upgrades to mobile check-in, digital concierge tools, and in-room automation now allow guests to customize everything from lighting to room temperature with ease. “It’s about reducing friction so guests can focus on enjoying their stay,” Nisbett says.

As Ottawa transforms into a winter wonderland, Brookstreet embraces the spirit of the season with an array of festive experiences. “We’re excited to unveil our Festive Retreat packages,” says Nisbett. “The offer combines overnight stays with spa treatments and holiday-themed dining experiences.” For families, the Family Holiday Getaway introduces seasonal activities for all ages, creating a season filled with comfort and celebration.

Guests arriving in November and December will find the hotel decked in glowing holiday décor, with rich seasonal menus, caroling evenings, and even a visit from Santa. “Our goal is to create a warm, festive atmosphere,” Nisbett adds. “It’s about those small surprises that make guests feel a sense of wonder and joy.”

Dining continues to be a cornerstone of the Brookstreet experience. “Perspectives offers a refined, panoramic dining experience that combines stunning views with contemporary cuisine,” says Nisbett. “Options provides a cozy, welcoming atmosphere with diverse comfort foods and innovative dishes that make it ideal for casual gatherings.” Options also features live jazz performances seven nights a week, which have become a signature part of the hotel’s identity.

Much of Brookstreet’s success stems from the people behind it. “Our team consists of over 200 talented individuals committed to excellence,” Nisbett shares. “The culture is built on teamwork, respect, and a genuine passion for hospitality.” That sense of pride and camaraderie sets the hotel apart. “What makes us stand out is our dedication to personalized service and creating a warm, welcoming environment that makes both guests and staff feel valued and inspired.”

Brookstreet’s meeting and conference facilities have long been a destination for Ottawa’s business community, and they now reflect a new level of versatility. “We’ve upgraded our meeting spaces with state-of-the-art AV technology, flexible room configurations, and high-speed wireless connectivity,” says Nisbett. “Our event planning support ensures every detail,

“We hope guests will leave with a sense of warmth, joy,

and connection. We want them to remember the festive touches, heartfelt service, and the special moments shared with loved ones.”

from small corporate meetings to major conferences, is handled with precision.” With nearly 28,000 square feet of event space, the property is equipped to host gatherings of any scale with ease.

Despite its luxury, Brookstreet remains deeply connected to Ottawa’s west-end community. “We actively collaborate with local artists for art displays, host community events, and partner with regional businesses to promote local artisans and products,” Nisbett explains. “Our goal is to celebrate and support the vibrancy of Ottawa’s west end while enriching our guests’ experience with authentic local flair.” From live jazz to its proximity to scenic trails, the hotel continues to celebrate the neighborhood it calls home.

That sense of evolution extends into the months ahead. Brookstreet is preparing upgrades to its spa and Flex Fitness Centre and developing new partnerships designed to connect guests more closely with Ottawa’s cultural life. “We’re forming partnerships with local tour operators and cultural institutions to offer guests exclusive experiences around Ottawa,” Nisbett says.

As for what he hopes guests take away this holiday season, Nisbett’s answer captures the essence of Brookstreet: “We hope guests will leave with a sense of warmth, joy, and connection. We want them to remember the festive touches, heartfelt service, and the special moments shared with loved ones.”

With its continued innovation and timeless hospitality, Brookstreet Hotel remains one of Ottawa’s most beloved destinations; a place to rest, reconnect, and rediscover the art of genuine service.

Options Jazz Lounge is Brookstreet’s lively dining and entertainment venue, featuring nightly live jazz, handcrafted cocktails, and a menu of elevated comfort dishes.

Brookstreet’s newly renovated guest rooms blend modern design with warm comfort for a truly elevated stay.

STATE OF MIND

New evidence uncovers the science behind everyday choices and emotions.

People Who Fall Asleep in Random Places Make Better Problem Solvers

Studies show that the earliest stage of sleep, known as N1, is a powerful spark for creativity. Researchers at the Paris Brain Institute found that people who drifted into this “twilight” state for just 15 seconds were nearly three times more likely to solve hidden problems than those who stayed awake. The key: N1 blends dreamlike imagery with enough awareness to capture ideas before they fade. Even a brief micro-nap can unlock this creative sweet spot, so if you’re stuck on a problem, nodding off might just be the breakthrough.

The Music You Listened To At Ages 13-17 Has The Most Emotional Impact

94% of People Consider Themselves Good Listeners, But Only 11% Actually Are

A Harvard Business Review workplace study found a striking gap between perception and reality: while 94% of employees believe they’re good listeners, only 11% actually demonstrate the skills that define effective listening. The issue isn’t hearing words, it’s failing to show engagement, ask clarifying questions, and respond with empathy. Closing this gap requires active effort: focus fully, avoid planning your reply mid-conversation, and reflect back what you’ve heard. These small shifts transform “hearing” into listening that builds trust, clarity, and stronger collaboration.

During adolescence, the brain’s reward systems and emotional circuits are especially sensitive, locking songs from this period into memory with heightened intensity. That’s why a track from your teenage years can trigger nostalgia, mood shifts, or even a sense of identity more strongly than music discovered later in life. These “reminiscence bump” years set the soundtrack that stays with you.

Men Are More Likely To Buy Luxury or Status-Enhancing Goods After Eating Spicy Food

Research published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology shows that men are more likely to choose luxury goods after eating spicy foods. The heat from capsaicin activates the sympathetic nervous system, heightening arousal and sensation-seeking behavior.

BRINGING SPECIAL FX MAKEUP TO LIFE

An Ottawa creator blending technical skill with imagination, Ginette Belisle brings cinematic artistry to her growing body of Special FX work.

From eerie Halloween transformations to cinematic character work, Ottawa’s Ginette Belisle turns imagination into art through the lens of special FX makeup. A self-taught creator who balances her full-time healthcare career with a passion for makeup artistry, Belisle has built a growing following online for her intricate, otherworldly designs. What began as a creative outlet during the pandemic has since become a platform for teaching, experimenting, and inspiring others to explore the world of makeup as an art form. Whether she’s transforming herself into The Corpse Bride, designing textured prosthetics, or creating her annual “12 Days of Christmas” series, Belisle’s work captures the magic—and the messiness— behind every transformation.

What first sparked your interest in special FX makeup, and how did you turn that passion into a career?

I would have to say my most challenging project was The Corpse Bride makeup. It was one of my earliest works and it took nearly three hours to create! I struggled to paint the eyes and make them look somewhat symmetrical and realistic. I can’t even count how many times I started over, but I think that’s the look that taught me to trust the process.

Are there any surprising or little-known aspects of FX makeup that people might not realize until they see it up close?

In high school I took a few summer courses in drama and one week, they had a class on makeup application and techniques. I remember we had to create these masks with all kinds of different materials. I think that’s when my love for creative makeup began.

Can you share one of your most memorable or challenging projects… something that really pushed your creativity?

Up close, FX makeup can look rough, exaggerated, or even a bit fake. It’s designed primarily for how it will look on camera, under specific lighting. FX makeup tends to trap heat and sweat, so sometimes it can look like it’s breaking down or melting. But sometimes the messiest looks are the most successful.

Who or what inspires you most when you’re creating, whether it’s other artists, films, or even things from everyday life?

I get inspiration from literally everything! I’ve always loved old Hollywood films and classic glam makeup like Marilyn Monroe’s. Other artists definitely inspire me as well. My daughter even inspires me to create some of her favourite characters.

What advice would you give to someone who’s curious about getting into special FX makeup but doesn’t know where to start?

Start with curiosity, not perfection. FX makeup is all about trial and error. I am a self-taught artist and I mess things up often. It’s all about experimenting and learning how makeup and materials work together. You can also find lots of videos on YouTube or MasterClass to learn about application and techniques. The goal is to try something different every time and just have fun with it!

Since this is our Holiday Issue, what type of work do you do around the holidays or for Christmas productions in Ottawa?

A Guide to Caviar: What It Is, Why It Costs So Much, and How to Enjoy It Like a Pro

Caviar has long symbolized rarefied luxury. But in 2025, the world of caviar is evolving. Once reserved for high-society tables and black-tie service, it’s now finding its way onto more menus and into more homes. The global market is growing fast, projected to exceed $700 million by 2030, driven by sustainable aquaculture and a new class of curious, experience-driven consumers.

At its core, though, caviar remains what it’s always been — salt-cured roe from sturgeon, prized for its texture and taste, and processed with obsessive care. It’s a product of time, patience, and precision. Whether you’re spooning it solo or layering it on a blini, caviar is still indulgent, just in a quieter, more intentional way.

CAVIAR BY DEFINITION

Only roe from sturgeon is considered true caviar. Top varieties include Beluga, Ossetra, and Sevruga, each with unique flavor and texture. Roe from salmon or trout may resemble it, but it doesn’t qualify.

Nearly all premium caviar today is farm-raised, with leading producers in countries like China, Italy, and France. Wild sturgeon is heavily protected, making ethical sourcing more relevant than ever.

WHY IT’S EXPENSIVE

The cost comes down to rarity and effort. Sturgeon can take a decade or more to mature. The roe is harvested by hand, lightly salted, and packed under strict conditions. Add cold-chain shipping and short shelf life, and you’re paying for not just the pearls, but the process.

WHAT IT SHOULD TASTE LIKE

Good caviar should be clean, mildly briny, and almost buttery. It should pop on the tongue, not squish. Beluga tends to be larger and more delicate, Ossetra is firmer and nutty, and Sevruga is smaller with a sharper profile. Look for glossy, well-defined pearls, and avoid anything that looks wet or uniform.

HOW TO EAT IT

Serve cold, never frozen, ideally in its original tin over crushed ice. Use non-metal spoons and keep the pairings simple. Think toast points, soft eggs, or crème fraîche. A dry Champagne or chilled vodka works best. A little goes a long way.

STILL WORTH IT?

Caviar today is less about flexing and more about appreciating process, origin, and pause. It’s a moment. One bite. A quiet indulgence that says more about curiosity than cost. For those who value craft over quantity, it remains one of the most rewarding bites in the culinary world.

Telling Ottawa’s Stories, One Real Moment at a Time

After nearly 25 years behind and in front of the camera at CTV Ottawa, Tyler Fleming has quietly built a reputation as one of the city’s most versatile and grounded storytellers. From editing and operating cameras to reporting from the field as a multi-skilled journalist, he’s done it all and done it well. But behind the lens is someone who doesn’t just chase headlines. He notices the quiet metaphors, the raw moments, and the visuals that speak before anyone says a word.

Fleming’s work reflects the things that drive him most: honesty, community, and connection. When he’s not filming stories around the city, you’ll likely find him off the grid, on the water, in the forest, or with his family and animals in South Ottawa. In this conversation, he opens up about his beginnings, his proudest moments, and why he still believes that observation, not ego, is the key to good journalism.

You’ve spent your career telling Ottawa’s stories, but let’s start with yours. Where did you grow up, and what first sparked your interest in media and storytelling?

I grew up in Ottawa’s west end, back when it was still Nepean. I had a great group of friends, and we spent our entire childhood

outside, exploring and getting into all kinds of adventures... some good, others not so much. Either way, every moment felt like a little story, a snapshot in time. I loved recounting those adventures, turning them into colourful tales for anyone who’d listen.

That’s the storyteller side of me. As for the media part, like many families, we were big on news. We read the morning papers and always watched the evening local broadcast, especially CJOH with Max Keeping. He was the most familiar face in Ottawa back then, and one day he showed up at our school. Seeing the person I watched every night, suddenly standing in front of me, made TV feel real in a whole new way. That moment stuck with me, and still does.

When did you know that working in television and news was the path you wanted to take?

All through high school, TV wasn’t really on my radar. I was more into tuning cars. In college, I tried computer science, but let’s just say it really wasn’t for me. I was at a crossroads, working part-time and about ready to drop out.

Then one night over a pint, my long-time friend Jon asked, “What do you want to do?”

It sounds cliché, but I said, “I like television.” From there, I enrolled in TV Broadcasting at Algonquin College, and I excelled. After graduation, I was hired at CTV Ottawa and

“Notice what’s happening and ask about what you see. That’s how you get honesty, and that’s what matters most.”

worked a variety of behind-the-camera roles, like graphic design, videographer, and commercial production editor, before moving in front of the lens as a multi-skilled journalist. It’s been nearly 25 years, so I’d say it was the right choice.

You’ve worn a lot of hats at CTV Ottawa: camera operator, editor, senior ENG camera, and now journalist. How has that hands-on experience shaped your approach to storytelling?

Editing was my forte. I’ve always had a knack for pairing pictures and words to create a story that connects. I had the privilege of working with some of Canada’s best reporters, and they taught me the backbone of solid TV news.

As a cameraman, I learned how important visual metaphors are — I remember filming a flood cleanup once — a person hauling soaked furniture out of his basement. It wasn’t just stuff he was tossing, it was years of memories. The visuals told that story before he even said a word.

Those are the real moments that make a story authentic. Observation is everything. Notice what’s happening, ask about what you see, and never ask a question you already know the answer to. That’s how you get honesty, and that’s what matters most in this job.

Over the years, what’s one local story that’s stuck with you the most, and why?

There have been so many, but one of my favourites was about Padel, a fast and popular Swedish racket sport that Ottawa Senators legend Daniel Alfredsson brought to town.

He was there to explain the game. After a quick tutorial, we teamed up to take on the club pro and his brother. I’ll just say it... I was terrible! We lost badly, and Alfie wasn’t exactly thrilled with his new teammate.

But hey, I can still say I was Daniel Alfredsson’s teammate. I’ll take that lol.

In 2014, you were part of the team recognized with an Edward R. Murrow Award for creative use of video. Looking back, what about that project still resonates with you?

Ah yes — Goosebuster! A story about a man hired by the city to scare geese off local beaches.

It was such a fun piece. I was the cameraman and editor, and at the time drones were still brand new. That buzzing sound in the air, the flapping wings, the honking — paired with tight shots of confused geese — it was a recipe for a memorable story.

It reminded me that simple, punchy writing, a bit of humour, and strong visuals are what keep viewers engaged. I still think about that story today.

And what makes that award special is that it’s international. It remains one of my proudest moments. Hopefully, I’ll get another as an MSJ.

You live a very outdoorsy, active life when the cameras are off, horseback riding, skiing, fishing, and being a dad. What does that time outdoors do for you after long days in the newsroom?

It’s silence, serenity, and peace.

News is fast-paced and deadline-driven, and I love that energy, but I also love shutting it off. I make a point of taking off my watch after work. Out in nature, whether I’m alone or with my family, time doesn’t matter. The only thing that does is what’s right in front of you.

I’m not sure parenthood is quieter, lol. It’s busy. My son Dylan plays competitive soccer, so that’s a full schedule, and my daughter Hailey still rides horses and recently started her first part-time job. My wife, Jodi, never lets the busyness of life get in the way of family time. She’s the reason we have those moments on the boat, skiing, or just laughing together. She makes the chaos feel meaningful.

Family fuels everything for me. It’s what keeps me working hard and striving to be better.

What’s a lesson, learned in the field, on set, or in life, that’s guided you through your career?

Never peak.

Keep reaching, keep pushing. Don’t get complacent. Be curious. Seek the truth. If you don’t know something, ask — don’t fake it. And never underestimate yourself or others.
