For many Canadian actors, success arrives far from where their story began. For Sadie Laflamme-Snow, the opposite feels true. The Ottawa-born actress has quickly become one of the country’s most recognizable rising talents, with three years of standout work on the hit Hallmark series The Way Home, a fan favourite performance as Alice Dhawan, and a growing global audience through her voice role as Ava in Netflix’s animated series Unicorn Academy. The momentum has been steady, undeniable, and deeply rooted in a foundation that began right here in the nation’s capital.

A graduate of Canterbury High School and later the National Theatre School, Sadie’s early years were shaped by the city’s arts community. She grew up watching world class theatre at the National Arts Centre, performing in school productions, and building friendships that remain central to her life today. Ottawa is still the place she returns to when she needs grounding, connection, or home.

Her rise in television has been equally centred on collaboration. Working alongside Andie MacDowell and Chyler Leigh on The Way Home offered Sadie a rare opportunity to learn directly from two established, respected actors, while contributing her own emotional depth to a series that explored family, memory, and healing. The show earned the Audience Choice Award at the 2025 Canadian Screen Awards, a moment that highlighted not just its popularity but the collective work of its largely Canadian cast and crew.

Now, with new episodes of The Way Home and Unicorn Academy arriving this year, Sadie enters 2026 as one of Canada’s most promising multi-platform performers. Her roots may be here, but her trajectory is reaching far wider. For our January/February cover story, she reflects on her journey, her creative world, and the city that shaped her.

You were born in Ottawa. What was your childhood here like, and what memories of the city still feel meaningful to you today?

My childhood here was so beautiful. I feel really lucky to have grown up in Ottawa. I made lifelong friends here. Almost all of my closest friends are people I’ve known since kindergarten, so when I come home to Ottawa I have all my favourite people in one place. When I was a teenager I was dying to move to a big city to follow my dreams but now I’m always planning my next visit home.

When did you know that acting was what you wanted to pursue? Who were some of the early inspirations that shaped your path?

The dream has always been to perform. My earliest inspiration was probably the High School Musical movies, but if I had to pick something a little more legitimate I would say that seeing Broadway Across Canada at the NAC was hugely inspiring to me as a kid. I remember saying to my mum after Billy Elliot in 2013, “I could do that” and then going home and studying the program for hours on end.

How supportive was your family in those early years, and in what ways did you pursue acting as a child and teenager?

I am very lucky that my family has always supported my goal of becoming a performer. My Mum and Granny have been taking my family to see shows and sitting in the audience of my own shows since I was three years old. Appreciating the arts is a family affair. It’s something we connect on and I feel so lucky that all my family members truly get it and see the value in pursuing a creative career.

What was your experience like at The National Theatre School, and how did it influence your craft?

My experience at NTS was life changing. Getting that diploma is one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. It is an extremely demanding program, and the skills I got through the training and the people I met there have made me a more confident and resilient artist. I have maintained a great relationship with the school and have been back a few times since graduating to be a mentee of movement specialist Rebecca Harper, and I feel so grateful that my learning from NTS didn’t stop when I graduated.

Tell us about your first few acting roles. What stands out to you about those early experiences and what did they teach you?

When I was in high school I was in the National Arts Centre production of Jordan Tanahill’s Concord Floral directed by Erin Brubacher and Cara Spooner. It was incredible to be trusted with such exciting material on such a prestigious stage as a young person. The directors and the cast remain some of my closest friends and doing that show was an important foundation for me. It made me excited about how art could make people feel, how it could change their minds. It was what made me decide to go to theatre school.

You’re the voice of Ava on Unicorn Academy. What has the experience been like bringing her to life, and how does voice work challenge you or excite you differently than on camera roles?

Voice work is much more similar to theatre in a lot of ways. It is so high energy and far from naturalistic. Creating the character of Ava for Unicorn Academy has been a dream come true. Our favorite animation performances mean so much to us as little kids even if we don’t really understand what a voice actor is or how cartoons come to life. To know that this character is having that impact on little kids across the world is a responsibility I do not take lightly. When people tell me their kids watch the show I cannot hide how excited it makes me.

Let’s talk about The Way Home, which just wrapped filming in November. What have the past three years been like living in the shoes of Alice? When you began, did you have any sense of the journey this role would take you on?

I never could have predicted that we would get to do four seasons of The Way Home. It’s just not something you can plan for in this industry.

So every new chapter we got to take on felt like a bonus. It was such a departure for the network and no one knew what to expect. We believed in the story, the scripts and our bonds with each other and that belief helped us make this show come to life and reach such a devoted audience. In a lot of ways, I grew up on this set.

It was my first big role on a series and everyone was so patient and supportive of me while I grew into the actor and person I am today.

You’ve spent these years working alongside Andie MacDowell and Chyler Leigh. What has it been like collaborating with each of them, both on set and off?

I love them both so much. I truly can’t believe that I got to share so many scenes with both of these iconic actors and kind human beings.

They are so generous and hardworking. Leading a series is not for the faint of heart. It takes passion, leadership skills and dedication. Both Andie and Chyler lead with so much grace and heart and they set the tone for the team that we hope translates from on set to on screen.

The series explores family history, generational healing and mother-daughter relationships. How did you, Chyler and Andie work together to bring these themes to life in a way that felt grounded and intentional?

All three of us are very different, but we all feel things very deeply which I think is what makes the Landry women come to life. Representing three generations of women in our own unique ways brought us closer to each other and to our own families. Working on this show highlighted the beauty of intergenerational friendships between women that the three of us are so lucky to have. We have so much to learn from each other and so much support we can offer each other and we brought that principle to the storytelling. I also want to mention our amazing show runners Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke who are a mother-daughter duo. Both of their unique perspectives inform the way they run this production and we could not ask for a better, smarter and more caring leadership team. This idea of multiple generations of women telling a story together is woven into every aspect of how the show gets made.

How meaningful was it to film with a major American cast while still being able to work in your home province?

I loved it. So much about my life changed when I started working on this series that it was nice to feel at home in Toronto and in Ontario. I sometimes wish I had more time to show my American castmates around the city, but we were always working too hard to be tourists. If we were hanging out between shoot days we were ordering takeout and spending time at our showrunner’s house having family dinners.

MAGAZINE The series won the Audience Choice Award at the 2025 Canadian Screen Awards. What did that moment mean to you and to everyone involved?

That was so exciting. Even though the show is technically an American production almost the entire cast and crew of artists who make The Way Home are Canadian. Plus it is set in New Brunswick. We don’t even pretend that we’re in a fake American town. It was so cool to see the fans come together and vote for this story and celebrate the work of all the talented Canadian artists who bring it to life. Winning an award decided on by a panel is incredible, but to know that this award was decided on by people who have actually watched and loved every minute of the series is extra meaningful. They practically ran the campaign themselves. It was amazing.

Outside of acting, what are some of your hobbies or favourite things to do when you have downtime?

I love to cook. I love to sing. I love to go to the theatre. I love pilates. I love my dog Mister. I love thrifting. I love reading. And I have always loved doing arts and crafts.

What is your favourite movie, your favourite artist and concert you’ve been to?

Wow this is a hard question. Favourite movie?

Maybe the original West Side Story. I also really loved Sinners if we’re talking about this year. My favorite artist is SZA or Whitney Houston. My favourite concert is also SZA. I went to her SOS tour with my sister and it was the best concert I’ve ever seen.

Since this is for our Jan/Feb issue, what is one new year’s resolution you have for 2026?

My new year’s resolution is to have a well rounded year. Because I love what I do so much, my job can take up a lot of space in my life. But life is about a lot of different things, so I want to work hard, but always maintain perspective.

Now that the series has wrapped, what’s next for you? Are there projects or goals you’re excited to explore?

When you come back to Ottawa, what spots or restaurants do you always try to visit?

I want to shout out the girls at Dreamland Cafe.

My friends Coco and Marlo own it and they have created such a cool spot for the city. The space is beautiful, the food is delicious and I am just so happy for them. I also love Miam Miam General Store for vintage and Taj Indian Cuisine for takeout.

Finally, what is your best advice for aspiring actors who want to build a career in this industry?

Be the kind of person that people want to work with. You of course have to focus on being amazing at your craft, but don’t forget to be intentional about how you make people feel when you work together. Notice the things that your mentors do that make them a pleasure to work with and remember that being a generous collaborator is part of the skillset that makes you a working artist.

NATHAN INGHAM Serves As Atlético Ottawa’s Calm in the Storm Atlético Ottawa’s 2025 Canadian Premier League Championship game back in November, a 2-1 extra time victory over Calgary’s Cavalry FC, will go down as one of the most memorable games in Ottawa sports history.

By their very nature, all championships are hard to forget because they’re so special and don’t come around very often. But what made this national soccer title extra memorable was the way Ottawa persevered during a relentless blizzard that dumped heavy snow onto the TD Place pitch that night.

And right in the middle of it all was Atlético Ottawa goalkeeper Nathan Ingham, who says he’ll never forget the emotions when the whistle finally blew to end the match, the season, and a night of the craziest weather he’s ever played in.

“It was all just an overwhelming sense of relief and joy,” Ingham said. “You start celebrating and immediately you see your teammates who you’ve been through so

much with and you celebrate even harder.

And that just keeps happening over and over.

It’s such an incredible feeling.”

One of the enduring images from that fateful night was seeing Ingham suddenly pick up a shovel and lend a hand during a snow clearance stoppage.

But it wasn’t a totally selfless act.

“There are certain reference points a goalkeeper needs to see in order to know where they are in the net, since they can’t look backwards, obviously. So the penalty spot, the corners of the boxes, the “D”, etc. It was a lot easier to just grab a shovel quickly and clear those spots than to try to explain it to the poor volunteers who were freezing and just trying to quickly get the lines clear.”

If the championship and the snowstorm weren’t enough to make the evening memorable, David Rodriguez, a 23-year-old Mexican midfielder scored both Atlético goals, one of them on an incredible bicycle kick that will forever be known as the Icicle Kick.

MAGAZINE “I remember laughing,” Ingham said. “I don’t know if I’ve ever laughed at a goal in my life, but that was my reaction. It was hard to believe. Given the circumstances and the magnitude, it might be the best goal I’ve ever seen live.”

The laughs continued well into the night as the club had booked Local at Lansdowne so that the players could celebrate with friends and family, win or lose.

“After our locker room celebrations, we joined up with everyone there. I had my parents and my girlfriend in town and I really just tried to take it all in. It was amazing to see so many happy people in one place. I didn’t want to leave.”

Unfortunately for local soccer fans, Ingham’s time in Ottawa has come to an end. Faces sat down with the goalkeeper to talk career milestones, a night that won’t soon be forgotten, and his plans for next season.

After the win, was there someone you wanted to call or text right away?

I’ll be honest, I didn’t look at my phone until the next morning. I didn’t want to miss a minute of the night. All I had to do was get from the stadium to Local and Local to home. The only call I took was from an Uber driver trying to find us at the end of the night.

That said, I have never had that many missed calls or texts in my life.

In the morning, I answered them all from bed.

You’ve been playing since you were 10. Why do you love goalkeeping?

It’s a love-hate relationship. I could be wrong, but I think if you ask most goalkeepers at this level 56

you’ll get a similar answer. I will say, there is nothing like it, and it has undoubtedly made me a better person, which I will always be grateful for.

You’ve been a core player for Atlético Ottawa. What makes the connection between the club and the supporters special?

I think like any relationship, it’s just something that has been built over time together. Emotionally, there have been ups and downs in our short history, but when both sides see each other showing up every game, giving everything we have, and still fighting for the same things, you build this respect for each other and that leads to a special connection.

“It’s a love-hate relationship… there is nothing like it, and it has undoubtedly made me a better person, which I will always be grateful for.”

What was it like playing for Diego Mejia?

I don’t have enough good things to say about Diego. He is a special coach. I learned more in this year than I have in any other year of my career. And that’s not easy to do as a 30-something year old. We are very lucky to have him.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Most of my free time revolves around the restaurant scene here.

Whether it’s at Mati or checking out different places to enjoy a meal or find some inspiration, I struggle to sit at home.

I’ll be announcing a new project I’ve been working on soon which I’m really excited about as well.

It’s a docuseries that will highlight hospitality and sport, and the professionals within them, around North America.

Do soccer fans ever recognize you while you’re working at the restaurant? Has it ever resulted in a funny or memorable moment?

Haha! Yes, this slowly became more normal to me. A lot more when I had the long hair. I’d get a lot of ‘good games’ and ‘good lucks’ on the way out. Nothing crazy. Up until we won the final last month, I would usually joke that there was a better chance people recognized me during a game as the bartender of Mati than the other way around.”

And that brings us to your career news. You just signed a three-year deal with Cavalry FC in Calgary, the very team you just helped steal a trophy from in November. It sounds like it’s a great opportunity, even beyond soccer, to be working for Spruce Meadows (Cavalry FC’s owners).

Spruce Meadows is kind of the Augusta or Wimbledon of the equestrian world. They took a chance to buy a soccer team and try and build that the same way they did the equestrian. And now I get to be a part of that.

The whole package in Calgary is kind of what’s taking me there. I’m excited about the soccer opportunity, of

course, but also the hospitality side of things that’s really going to push my career forward.

I’m going to be joining a new restaurant that’s just opened a few weeks ago called the Foxtrot. They have hopes to be a top 20 restaurant in Canada in the next three years. It’s on Spruce Meadows campus. And I’m also going to be joining and learning from the head of strategic advancement of the Spruce Meadows Corporation in event planning.

Sounds like a perfect situation for you, although I’m guessing it still wasn’t an easy decision.

No, there were definitely some sleepless nights and melancholy days in the past month. When I look back on it in 10 or 15 years, and I just look at the facts, I’ll probably realize it was kind of a no brainer decision.

But over the last month, it has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do because of the relationships and the familiarity of Ottawa and the club and the fans and the people. That’s what made this far more complicated.

So along with a championship, what will you take away from your time in Ottawa?

The relationship I’ve had with Ottawa has been super special. My time here over the last four years has truly made it feel like home.

While he may return to TD Place next season in enemy colours, local soccer fans will always have a soft spot for Nathan Ingham and lifelong memories of a national championship in the snow.

PWHL STARDOM Rory Guilday’s Inspiring Road To IN OTTAWA

Ottawa Charge defenceman Rory Guilday isn’t your average rookie PWHL player.

Guilday entered the pro ranks last June when she was drafted 5th overall by the Charge in the 2025 Professional Women’s Hockey League draft.

When a team uses such an early pick on a player, it obviously speaks volumes about their talent and value to a team.

And to hear her former head coach describe her game, it sure looks like Guilday was always going to be a safe bet for Ottawa.

“I’d say she’s one of the best defencemen in the world,” Cornell University head coach Doug Derraugh pronounced in an interview last spring with WROC TV in Rochester, New York.

“I’ve never seen a player with a shot like hers, or that’s as physically strong as her.”

That’s some high praise for a player who was still in school and hadn’t yet played a single pro game.

But the highest levels of hockey didn’t wait for Guilday to finish school.

The 23-year-old, who grew up in Minnetonka, Minnesota, has already answered the call for USA Hockey’s national program numerous times. She’s now a three-time medalist with Team USA at the IIHF Women’s World Championship, winning gold in 2023 and two silver medals in 2022 and 2024.

Her international goal now is to compete in the Olympics someday.

“Putting the USA jersey on is never something I take for granted,” Guilday told Faces. “It’s a representation of something bigger than myself, so every opportunity to wear it alongside my teammates is extremely special and meaningful.”

At the same time, as the new kid in town, Guilday is excited to help the Ottawa Charge try and win the PWHL championship they came so close to securing last season.

“Right away I could tell that we have a great group in the locker room. Everyone loves showing up to the rink every day, and on the ice we push each other to be better.”

“Right away I could tell that we have a great group of girls in the locker room,” Guilday said. “Everyone loves showing up to the rink every day and we have so much fun together. On the ice, we are competitors who push each other to be better every day. We have a ton of talent and hard workers.”

“Luckily, the tumor wasn’t something that threatened my life, but going through chemotherapy I think made me a better person as a whole. I learned a lot about myself, grew into a very positive and humble human being, and I appreciate the ability to do the things I love so much more.”

The Charge aren’t exactly easing Guilday into her pro career with sheltered minutes. No one on the team plays more than she does, and the future looks bright.

We connected with Guilday for a Q and A session, just a few weeks into her first season as a pro.

But ten years ago, her life took an unexpected turn that now makes her accomplished young career seem all the more remarkable.

“At the end of seventh grade, I was diagnosed with a benign optic nerve tumor that was threatening the vision in my right eye,” Guilday said. “I began chemotherapy right away to hopefully stop the cell growth so it didn’t reach the optic chiasm and affect my left eye as well. I ended up doing chemotherapy for nine months where I lost most of the vision in my right eye, a lot of my strength at the time, and I had to stop competing in both hockey and soccer.

“It was definitely difficult on me and my loved ones.”

Thankfully, the summer before ninth grade, Guilday’s recovery reached a point where she could compete in hockey again. Eventually, the challenge was behind her, her body adjusted, and she stopped even noticing her new vision reality unless she closed her left eye.

Can you describe how your family shared in your hockey story?

My parents, Sarah and Lanny, have been incredible throughout my hockey journey. It’s difficult to put into words how much they mean to me. They are my number one fans, biggest supporters, and have always encouraged me to do what makes me happy. I am so grateful for how wholeheartedly they have been there for me every step of the way.

My sisters Hunter and Lila, and my brother Jordy fueled my competitive edge from when we were little, playing any and all sports and games. Lots of tears and fights, but it’s also where I learned to be a part of a team.

What drew you to Cornell, and what did you love most about your time there?

Cornell is a fantastic school to get an education from and also has a very long line of high caliber hockey players on both the mens and womens side, but it ended up being the amazing people there that meant the most to me. I loved showing up to the rink every day surrounded by my best friends and just all the little in between moments we shared.

What was your PWHL draft day like back in June and what will you remember about it?

The PWHL draft was very surreal to me.

Being drafted in the host city where I was able to feel the energy and love right away was pretty amazing. It was very special to share that moment with my parents and to have all my family and friends watching at home.

Anything you’ve found different about living in Ottawa?

I have loved living in Ottawa so far. For it being the capital, it has such a quiet and tight knit feel to it that I really love. It is also so cool how much the city has rallied around the Charge!

How has the transition been, going from college hockey to the pros?

Pro hockey is definitely faster and more physical than college, but I am lucky enough to be surrounded by incredible hockey players and humans that have helped me get my feet under me.

What are your interests these days outside of hockey?

I love to read in my free time, go for walks, watch shows with my roommates, and eat some of my favorite food, like sushi!

In her first four pro games, Guilday got more ice time than any other Charge skater and stood second on the team with three points.

And as a testament to her popularity as a teammate, even as a rookie, defenceman Sam Isbell offered to give her the number 5 jersey she’s always worn.

After her less-than-ordinary journey to get here, Rory Guilday is fitting in just fine in the Capital, ready to help power the Charge for a long time.

InSpirits Revisiting the world’s most enduring cocktail.

THE COFFEE Good espresso is non-negotiable. Freshly pulled shots produce crema, which becomes the drink’s signature foam. Stale or over-extracted espresso turns the cocktail bitter. Light roasts create brightness, while darker roasts lend chocolate and smoke.

Cold brew concentrate works in a pinch, but it lacks the emulsifying oils that give the drink its silky crown.

THE VODKA

The Espresso Martini, Deconstructed The Espresso Martini has outlived its own punchline. Once the drink of late nights and louder decisions, it’s now a benchmark of technical skill behind the bar. Created in 1983 by London bartender Dick Bradsell when a model asked for something to “wake me up,” the drink has grown into a global ritual that marries two obsessions: coffee culture and cocktail culture.

THE ESPRESSO MARTINI REVIVAL The Espresso Martini became the fastest-growing cocktail of 2021, with global orders jumping over 300 percent and bartenders reporting equipment shortages from nonstop shaking.

A chilled, clean vodka keeps the drink sharp rather than heavy. Higher-proof vodkas offer better texture, cutting through the richness of the espresso. “The vodka shouldn’t disappear,” says Elliot Crane, bar director. “It should frame the coffee without fighting it.”

THE SWEETENER Simple syrup is classic, but many bartenders now use demerara or house-made coffee syrups to add body and depth.

Coffee liqueur changes the drink entirely, introducing vanilla and cocoa notes that turn the cocktail from crisp to dessert-like. The key is balance. Too sweet and it loses its bite. Too little and the bitterness overwhelms.

THE SHAKE Technique is everything. A hard, fast shake creates microbubbles that form the velvety foam on top. Too gentle and the drink falls flat. Too long and the ice shatters, diluting the cocktail. The ideal shake is about 12–15 seconds, using large ice cubes to create aeration without excess melt.

THE FINISH Three coffee beans are more than a garnish.

In Italian tradition, they symbolize health, wealth, and happiness. Expressing a touch of orange peel over the top adds an aromatic lift, while a pinch of shaved espresso bean adds fragrance without sweetness.

Some companies evolve naturally over time.

Others are built with intention, shaped by the people who stand behind them. Italfoods belongs to the latter. Founded in 1989 as a modest importer, it has grown into one of Ottawa’s most respected food distributors, led by partners Domenic Scanga and Frank Adamo, whose shared heritage and values have carried the business across generations.

For both men, the story began long before they owned the company. Dom entered the industry at 23, working as a sales representative for the original Italfoods. Frank spent years building experience in retail, administration, and customer relationships. When the opportunity to purchase the company appeared in 2005, the timing was far from ideal. “The economy wasn’t great, there was a lot of competition, and we both had young families,” Dom recalls.

“We put everything we had into the business.”

Frank adds, “We both knew our strengths and weaknesses. We always met in the middle with everything that came our way.”

Their values are rooted in immigrant families who built their lives in Canada from nothing.

“Our true Italian values and traditions are what continue to guide us,” Frank says. Integrity, hard work, and loyalty shaped Italfoods’ culture from the beginning. Even today, the team gathers on

Fridays for a family-style lunch, a small but meaningful tradition that Dom says “brings everyone back together and shows our appreciation for their hard work.”

A major turning point came with the launch of their private label program in 2007. “When our private label importing became a reality with the arrival of our extra virgin olive oil, that’s when it felt like the start of our legacy,” Dom says. “Our families were so excited and invested.” The sense of legacy deepened as their next generation stepped into defined roles within the company. “Having them work with us and alongside us means everything,” Frank adds.

Italy remains central to Italfoods’ identity. Integral are the annual trips to meet the farmers, producers and distributors behind the foods Canadians enjoy. “Italy is not just a work trip, it’s personal,” Dom explains. “We meet the suppliers and their families, learn the culture of each region, and watch how products are prepared. We can ensure our customers are getting genuine, quality food.” Many of Italfoods’ signature items were discovered during these trips, including their Spicy Italian Bomba, balsamic glaze, and the seasoning used in their house-made sausage. “Being face to face with the people who make our products is invaluable,” Frank says. “These foods are enjoyed by so many Canadians who love Italian cuisine.”

Another milestone came in 2013 with the opening of their 30,000 square foot facility in Carp, complete with a dedicated showroom and fully equipped test kitchen. “It was a dream to create a space where we could test products, host vendors, and show hospitality,” Dom says. The test kitchen has become a central hub for demonstrations, product selection, and supplier collaboration. Frank calls it one of their strongest assets. “Our showroom in Carp allows us to bring customers into our kitchen and show them what we’re capable of.

It has helped us promote our brands, test new ideas, and innovate with suppliers.”

But growth has also brought challenges. Rising import costs, labour shortages, currency fluctuations, and the long-term effects of the pandemic have reshaped the food service landscape. “Everything from freight charges to utilities has impacted us,” Frank says. Dom adds that communication is what keeps them 76

grounded. “We work together as a team and within the family. Maintaining good principles and adapting to the needs at hand is vital.”

The next generation is already shaping Italfoods’ future in meaningful ways. Marketing Director Ariana Scanga has defined Italfoods’ digital voice with warm, personal storytelling. “I’ve leaned into who we are as a family business built on tradition, quality, and connection,” she says. Sales Associate Julian Scanga has strengthened client relations and expanded Ital Storage, the company’s growing storage and logistics branch. Alyssa Adamo, Office Administrator, oversees core administrative functions while also supporting human resources and managing aspects of the company’s multinational chain business operations. Together, their contributions reflect a modern, well-rounded approach to leadership, built on the foundation Dom and Frank established. “Their youth and enthusiasm

“Our true legacy is having the next generation working with us and alongside us.” have brought many new ideas to the table,” Frank says. “With guidance, they are ready to continue the success we’ve built.” Dom adds “Working together with loyal staff, along with new technology, they’ve updated our systems, improved how we manage inventory and ordering, and made our business more efficient and safer. We are so grateful to the dedication and commitment of our whole team.”

Looking ahead, Italfoods is focused on thoughtful, market-driven growth. Dom notes increasing interest in non-alcoholic beverage options, gluten-free products, and labour-saving ingredients for busy kitchens. Frank highlights recent successes, including their Italfoods Muffuletta listed with Costco and ongoing private label collaborations with national retailers. Attendance at food shows and regular travel continue to fuel new product discovery and fresh opportunities.

For Dom and Frank, the future is grounded in continuity. “As one of the last locally owned foodservice companies in Ottawa, it’s important to be diligent and continue supporting our loyal customers; to stay connected to the community that always supported us” Dom says. Frank puts it simply: “Upwards and onwards. Our future looks bright, and with the next generation involved, we hope to take it to the next level.”

A legacy built to last, shaped by heritage, strengthened by family, and rooted in the flavours that brought them here.

It’s Like Father, Like Son At

Just ask Sylvain Brazeau, owner of OC Flooring: “Over the past three and a half decades,” Sylvain explains, “the flooring industry and the Ottawa market have changed dramatically. What began as a small, single-location carpet business had to adapt to new products, new installation standards, and a growing customer base. As the company expanded, our identity needed to reflect that. Our rebranding in 2024 brought both locations and all service lines under one clear, unified brand. It simplifies how we present ourselves to customers and positions us for the future.”

OC Flooring, as the two-store operation is now known, was founded in 1987 by Sylvain’s hardworking father, Raymond. Back then, both he and the company were known as The Orléans Carpet Man. The self-made, enterprising Raymond handled everything himself: sales, installation, service, and follow-up—all of this while establishing relationships with suppliers, warding off competition from larger stores, and earning the trust of a growing community. But Raymond had distinct advantages: He offered personal, hands-on service, a commitment to the

kinds of products that specifically fit his client’s needs, and a word-of-mouth reputation for doing the job better than anybody else.

He was the right talent in the right place at the right time. Orléans was expanding expeditiously.

New homes were going up on an ongoing basis, creating a steady demand for flooring.

As homeowners became more informed and selective, Raymond became the best choice within a home improvement culture that was increasingly accommodating national retailers.

Sylvain grew up in the business from a young age. When his father, Raymond, opened the original location, Sylvain was ten years old and quickly became an unofficial employee, taking on everything from janitorial and warehouse work to administrative tasks as he learned the operation from the ground up. Looking back over these years, it was meaningful time spent with his father.

“We had a great relationship,” he says of Raymond, who is now nearly retired and supports a key customer part-time from a distance. “My Dad built something real, and without knowing it, we learned from each other.”

“We don’t just sell flooring. We help customers choose what suits their home, lifestyle, and space. We make sure that it’s installed properly and finished well. Customers get a complete, start-to-finish experience.”

That “something real” is now Sylvain’s responsibility entirely. “The foundation my dad set is still here, in how we treat customers, install floors, and run the company.”

In 2000, the then single-store business took a defining step, establishing a second location in Kanata. Operating at the time as Orléans Carpet, the expansion required considerable hands-on effort and careful judgment. In time, both Orléans Carpet and the new Eagleson Flooring location came to reflect the same standards Raymond had established and Sylvain continued to uphold.

When both companies came together in 2024 as OC Flooring, it was a natural evolution for the company. “And,” Sylvain notes, “the response was extremely positive. Today, customers understand who we are right away, suppliers view us as one strong organization, and the in-house team feels more connected across both locations.”

Each location is run according to the same foundational values—as Sylvain lists them, treating customers with respect, standing behind the quality of the work, remaining rooted in the community, staying loyal to long-time suppliers and installers, and providing the kind of guidance by which customers can make informed decisions.

As a second-generation owner, Sylvain is clear about what comes next. “The showroom experience will always be a priority,” he says, “along with keeping our displays fresh and inspiring. We’re also focused on adding services and strengthening partnerships with designers, contractors, and builders.” If that suggests broader offerings and future growth, the interpretation is accurate. The rebrand to OC Flooring positions the company for future expansion, including the possibility of another location.

“I know I’m going to love it there!”

That was Rosey Edeh’s initial reaction to moving to Ottawa from Toronto after she was offered the co-hosting job on CTV Morning Live, recently rebranded CTV Your Morning Ottawa.

“I was an art history major and am an avid reader,” the vivacious 59-year-old explains. “I knew Ottawa was full of museums and had a great library system.”

Plus, there was the show, the best opportunity yet, after stints in Canada at CFCF and in the U.S. at MSNBC and CNN, to bring her unwavering dedication, irrepressible intelligence, and unbridled joie de vivre to television.

“I was in a restaurant having dinner with my daughter, talking about how much I was

looking forward to contributing to the show,” she recounts, “when the waitress suddenly said to us, ‘Eat up—we’re shutting down!’”

The culprit behind that bum’s rush was, of course, COVID. Suddenly, the world in Rosey’s sights, the one she couldn’t wait to be a part of, would have to hold its horses for a while (a looooong while, it turned out) before benefiting from her vivacious vibe and varied skills.

“I wasn’t allowed to stay home,” she details.

“I had to go to the studio, I had to establish myself. But while I couldn’t show Ottawa my true colours yet, I realized that I was offering something even more important: information people needed to stay safe.”

In time, the crisis lifted, and so, consequently, did the Rosey-coloured curtain. Almost six years later, Rosey is a much-appreciated fixture on CTV Your Morning Ottawa, a highFACES MAGAZINE

MAGAZINE

“I wake up every morning, I look at where I am and at what’s going on in my life, and I say, ‘Let’s do it!’” spirited mainstay on which viewers can rely. In the company of current colleagues Melissa Lamb and Will Aiello, she’s the proud, dependable purveyor of a winning blend of breaking news, up-to-theminute weather, and stories of local interest.

Whatever she’s covering, Rosey’s enthusiasm is always in evidence. By her own admission, she’s particularly passionate about stories, events, and personalities with regional roots, which is why she’s such a cheerleader for the program’s recent makeover.

“The Your Morning brand has been around for ten years. As the name suggests, it’s personalized TV. Today, there are so many ways to get the big information: online platforms, apps, AI… Bringing us into the Your Morning fold shows an organizational commitment to the best kind of local coverage, the kind you’re not going to get the same way from other sources.”

Network television may be struggling, but, a popular argument has it, this kind of programming, along with live sports, is helping it enjoy continued relevancy. By restamping the show to promote a consistent look across its A.M. programming line, CTV is constructively creating a nationally recognizable format making it easier to lure national advertisers. The bigger the brands and the greater the volume, the more an embedded variety of regional coverage can be made available.

Rosey is also a fan of another new convention: the format’s faster pace. “I’m an athlete,” she reminds those of us who’ve gotten so accustomed to her as an onair personality, we’ve forgotten her Track and Field triumphs at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games in the 1990s. “I have the instincts of a cat. I can’t sit behind a desk for very long. If I go on vacation, you won’t find me sitting on a beach, relaxing. I can’t do that. I have to move.

This new format has me on my feet all the time, crisscrossing the studio or out in the field. It’s perfect for me.”

Desk duties will be left to Melissa and Will, whose contrasting qualities bring much, Rosey cites, to the show. “They each bring something different, allowing us to represent a wide swath of the population. Melissa, as a devoted mother, is all about family. Will, being so young, is in to the things that that demographic is all about.”

While she doesn’t weigh in on herself, Rosey, as any faithful viewer can tell you, is distinguished by the mature perspective she provides; her energy may be admirably adolescent, but there’s an unmistakable groundedness beneath, a residual of lived experience that breaks through the surface of her stories and peppers her perspectives.

As for her relationship with Ottawa, nothing— not COVID, not our anything-goes winters, not having to work hard to keep accommodating the local audience—has come along to dim her initial enthusiasm.

“I wake up every morning, I look at where I am and at what’s going on in my life, and I say, ‘Let’s do it!’”

Fratelli Kanata A closer look at the people and philosophy behind nearly 30 years of success.

Fratelli Kanata didn’t become a local institution by chasing trends. It earned its place the traditional way: through consistency, hospitality, and a clear sense of identity. As the restaurant approaches its 30-year milestone, it remains one of the few places where staff and guests alike have stayed loyal for decades, not out of habit, but out of genuine connection.

For Richard Valente, who opened the Kanata location in 2001, the goal was never just to operate a restaurant. It was to build something lasting. “It’s an honour to have been on this ride for so long,” he says. “This industry isn’t easy, and staying consistent for this many years isn’t something we take for granted.”

That consistency starts with the food. Fratelli has built its reputation by focusing on what it does best: approachable, high-quality Italian cuisine served with care. Its wood-fired pizzas are a cornerstone of the menu. “The key is in the crust,” says Richard. “As long as the dough

is good, everything else works.” The pizza menu has remained largely untouched for years because, simply put, it works. “We just had a meeting about it, and there was nothing to change. Every single item still sells well.”

That same steady approach carries through the entire kitchen. Fratelli’s chef, a trusted leader behind the scenes, has complete creative freedom to shape the restaurant’s specials.

“He’s very in tune with what our customers like,” says Richard. “He knows what works, and he creates dishes with that in mind.” While the foundation stays the same, the specials provide room for seasonality and surprise.

Fratelli also offers a private upstairs loft space for intimate events. The room is frequently booked for rehearsal dinners in the summer and holiday parties in the winter, as well as retirement gatherings, corporate dinners, and milestone celebrations. “It’s a beautiful, intimate space,” says Richard. “We do it all, and

Staff loyalty is another defining trait. Many members of the team have stayed for 10, 15, or even 20 years.

Tanya Aramouni, who has been with Fratelli from the beginning, has helped open five locations and has become a central part of its story.

“Truly, I couldn’t see myself anywhere else,” she says. “We’ve been through great times and hard ones, but this place always feels like home.” Tanya credits the Valente family with setting the tone for consistency and care, but says the real energy comes from the new team members who bring fresh ideas. “They keep me inspired. We’re always learning.”

Her favourite part of the job is being there for her people. “The staff are my family. I care deeply for them, and I do everything I can to support them. In return, I’ve kept a loyal team. Some have moved on, but we still talk. Others are 15 to 20 years in and still going strong.”

Managing front-of-house in a restaurant like Fratelli isn’t simple, but Tanya has learned how to make it work.

“It’s a lot of trial and error, juggling a million things, and having the patience to find what fits. You need to be open to change because the industry moves fast. And you need people you can trust. Find one or two who love the work as much as you do, and build from there.”

While food is the focus, the bar program brings its own appeal. The Fratelli Martini has been a mainstay since day one and remains a top seller, alongside the Negroni and Aperol Spritz. “Our bartenders do a great job coming up with cocktails that use fun and relevant spirits,” says Richard. “We encourage them to try things out and bring back what works.”

The wine list, too, reflects a balance between familiar and fresh. “We keep our staples, but I’m always looking for something new,” Richard adds. “We’ve been exploring more Canadian and international wines lately, and our customers have been really enjoying them.”

As the 30-year mark approaches, Richard is proud of what Fratelli has become. “We’ve gone through a lot of ups and downs, but we stayed focused, and we kept going. We couldn’t have done it without our loyal customers and staff.”

Looking ahead, he knows his role may shift, but his connection to the restaurant will remain. “I may not be on the floor forever, but I’ll always be part of the Fratelli story. I’m grateful for the opportunity, and I’m proud of what we’ve built.”

The success of Fratelli Kanata has always come quietly, through trust and time. As it nears 30 years, that formula remains unchanged.

KEYSTRINGS The musicians behind one of Ottawa’s most energetic live acts.

Ottawa’s live music scene thrives on bands that can lift a room, and The Keystrings have become one of the city’s most reliable draws. Known for high-energy covers that span the 70s, 80s, 90s and modern rock, the five-piece has built a reputation rooted in tight musicianship, natural chemistry and setlists that consistently fill dancefloors in local venues, breweries and summer festivals. Alongside their covers, the group has been steadily developing original music that reflects years of playing together and learning each other’s instincts. What began as a small duo project has grown into a band with a clear identity and a growing catalogue that blends familiarity with a sound that feels distinctly their own.

The story begins in 2012, when pianist Jill and songwriter Dan formed a duo with the goal of gaining experience onstage. It was a leap, especially for Jill, who had never sung publicly before. “It all started with Dan and I forming a duo to play covers and cut our teeth on performing,” she says. “We started writing songs together almost right away.” Their writing process quickly took shape. Dan would bring an idea, Jill would

help refine it, and the two would shape the piece collaboratively. Within a short time, they realized they wanted to expand their sound, and a chance encounter with guitarist Todd during a live performance completed the early formation. “We got together and jammed, and it instantly felt right,” Jill says.

Before joining forces, each member came from a different musical path. Todd had long been part of the Ottawa scene, performing in and out of various groups before taking a short break. The Keystrings reignited his spark. “The freedom to experiment on stage really rejuvenated me,” he says. Jill, who grew up playing classical music, only fell in love with live performance after meeting Dan. “When we got to start actually playing live music and making fans, that is when my inspiration to sing and write took off.” Dan had been writing poetry and songs since high school but only gained confidence after years of open mic nights around the city. “Ottawa is a great town for building a stage presence. The people were forgiving and appreciative,” he says.

Over time, their wide musical tastes shaped the band’s eclectic identity. “We started out in jam bands and as a cover band, so naturally that bleeds into our writing,” Dan explains. Todd credits the grind of Ottawa’s music corridors, from Rideau Street to Preston, for sharpening their performance style. Jill describes their journey through bigger venues, festivals and milestones as motivation to keep evolving. Today, The Keystrings see a Bluesfest main stage appearance as the top item on their musical bucket list.

Relationships have been central to the band’s growth.

For Jill and Dan, who share both a marriage and a creative partnership, making music together has deepened their connection. “The joy of finishing a gig and taking the car ride home to discuss everything we did not get to talk about on stage is really a joy,” Dan says. Todd notes that collaborations with close friends,

wrote us a song,” Jill recalls. They recorded the entire track, later titled Forever Home, in a single afternoon before the tide came in. “It was pretty amazing to see Dan commit to the idea. It was an awesome music milestone.”

As performers, the band keeps their mission simple.

“Get people moving and having a good time,” Todd says. Dan offers his own tongue-in-cheek version. “We came to entertain, and if you are not entertained... well... (laughs). I’m kidding, but I hope you have a good time because we definitely are.”

Looking ahead, The Keystrings are preparing to release the reworked Out of the Woodwork album while continuing to expand their duo project. They plan to tour more widely, with upcoming East Coast dates already booked, and have submitted applications for

Their songwriting process remains anchored in Dan’s initial concepts, which the band then develops collectively. Recently, Dan experienced a shift in his guitar playing that inspired him to rewrite their upcoming album. “We believe the music will be more thoughtful and more intuitive,” he says. Jill confirms that the new material has already taken on a fresh energy.

One of their most memorable creative moments unfolded far from Ottawa, on a beach in New Brunswick. Dan and Jill had been building a long-term duo project called Kiss Me I Love You, inspired by their life together. During a cottage stay, inspiration struck suddenly. “Dan comes running in and scoops up his recording gear and says meet me on the beach, I just

Bluesfest and CityFolk. As for their place in Ottawa’s music landscape, Dan puts it plainly. “We would love to be a household name in Ottawa and represent the 613.”

Even with their momentum, the band has not forgotten its roots. Jill encourages new artists to perform live as often as possible. Todd advises musicians to lean into the influences of their collaborators. Dan keeps it simple. “You are fine, you got this.” And together, The Keystrings offer the advice that has shaped their own rise. “Show up, be humble, meet people, and play as much as you can.
