All eyes on acetate materials Quality is what it all comes down to. A much greater scrutiny of materials with concerns over the climate crisis, plastic pollution, fast fashion ....and now a growing preference for all things "sustainable" - means that high-quality cellulose acetates derived from cotton are popular in this category, as are the new recycled varieties of acetate. Biobased materials, M49 from Mazzucchelli and a selection of recycled acetate-based materials such as Eastman's Acetate Renew now pave the way for a new future for acetate eyewear and, importantly, much greater transparency from designers and eyewear brands about the materials they use, and their provenance, benefits and lasting qualities...this feature marks this turning point with some of the creative designs of 2022, in a mix of aesthetically refined, smart and elegant materials in a colour palette for today.....

Tortoiseshell For anyone who loves an iconic or classical tortoiseshell, the luxury and premium cellulose acetate materials are extremely detailed in colour tones and mixes, standing out for their intricacies and individual 'oldfashioned' qualities that give them so much character and style.

Connoisseurs who know the quality look for Mazzucchelli 1849 as a point of reference or a custom made material from Japan...the look and feel of such materials is far superior to all ordinary plastic materials that dominate the eyewear segment.

These stunning luxury materials are worked with extreme care and skill according to the traditional methods of craftsmanship; just the polishing itself can take days for some of these finely crafted handmade designs.

TREND CHUNKY 1970s IMAGE: FOLC EYEWEAR - large, statement design (Luna) with softly bevelled surfaces

Seventies light!

One of the favourite decades in eyewear, the 70s were a time of oversized frames, angular square designs, transparent lenses, exciting patterns and extravagant colour....

In the new season - the statement shapes inspired by the decade are as bold and oversized; some frames are angular, others very curvy and astonishingly large. For colours, the lighter tones are particularly elegant and classic hues like brown and glossy black look gorgeous in the finest acetate materials, with some patterns and grooves to keep things fresh. Designers have also stuck with transparent effects and much loved crystal - often featured with a very light wash of colour in these big, exaggerated, and fun-towear forms.

Trans-seasonal An alternative colour palette has developed quickly in the year 2022, and particularly for acetate frames, where breaking free from conventional on-trend colours has become a much more desirable path in eyewear. Favourite choices this year include the palette of natural colours and earth tones in the quality acetate materials which are always eye-catching. An ideal timeless addition to a wardrobe through the seasons, the shapes are gender-fluid and suitable for everyone to wear while the tones are gentle and flattering for every skin tone.

Green is a particularly popular natural tone this year while brown, honey, caramel and light yellow offers something very interesting for anyone who is buying their frame for life (and not just one season).

Combinations (two colours for front and temples) are also a beautiful and tasteful way to have a slightly quirky look that feels special to wear.
