Transparency & structure: AW 21/22 Surface and material trends in eyewear are a key topic for the season A/W 2021/22. Transparency effects in acetate materials have evolved as designers study the forms and creative aesthetic of shapes produced in clear material for the face and how they flatter the skin and "frame" the eyes. Much work is also underway to adopt very artistic finishes for solid surfaces that might look worn or worked into with a chisel or a sculptor's rasp.

Imperfect tactile surfaces, visible sculptural bevelling and the reproduction of natural surfaces such as mottled stone or marble - along with a careful experimentation in contrasts between rough and smooth surfaces all play a part in this world of eyewear design where colour and surface application have become a minutely studied form of art. Marble + granite Sleek and smooth or natural and unpolished, the beautiful tactile textures of stone, mineral, marble or granite have re-emerged as an inspiration in acetate eyewear.

Favored in earlier decades, and an exemplary look for those who love a natural and unique feel, these designs are now fresh and slightly edgy, illuminating personalities while bringing an artistic vibe to frame creation for 2021-22. The creativity is boundless with energetic colours and details that make these styles feel individualistic and precious! From black marblised effects to natural and neutral stone-like surfaces, these creations are quite bold and expressive while beautifully designed to suit many tastes.

Sculpted A huge direction towards the styling of acetate with a sculpted or "carved" look, an indication of handcrafted excellence and unique artisan quality - is evolving through the independent eyewear collections this year. Some designs are directly inspired by sculpture and the techniques of making a 3dimensional work of art, and emphasise the materiality or material qualities of the finest materials including the beautifully tactile cotton based 'friendly' acetate varieties.

A close-up look at these designs and an opportunity to touch them is the best way to appreciate their unique qualities and artistic surfaces and finishes.

Transparency The popularity of transparent glasses continues with tones of crystal, pastel pink, honey and delicate tints of blue and yellow. Single toned clear frames with a bright luminous finish and new transparent colour mixes are also creating a fresh look in this category. One of the hottest trends we noted during SILMO 2021 gradient and graduated colours on the front of the frames - will also add an exciting twist as a statement look that feels refreshingly cool and modern to wear.

With plenty of patterned acetates proposed for the season, linear or striated patterns in the transparent material add a new definition to the look of a clear minimal material these designs will be a great option for anyone who wants a more elaborate finish to their transparent frame.
