Inspiration in nature Central to what we study on a daily basis at Eyestylist are key trends and directions in materials, colours, textures, shapes and design innovations that will continue to affect the brands and products in the optical industry tomorrow. In our first downloadable trend bulletin, we present key colour trends in the independent eyewear collections for Spring/Summer next year. Nature has provided us with comfort, hope and inspiration through the crisis of 2020 as well as immediate respite from stress and anxiety during the most difficult times of lockdown. This intimate connection with nature and the powerful fast-paced movement toward a desire to protect the planet through improved commitments to sustainability and more respectful actions leads to a deeper unconscious draw to the evocative and subtle hues that relate to the natural world. Essential greens IMAGE: Etnia Barcelona
Essential greens Green vegetation. Plant life. Delicate aromatic herbs. Natural grasses and wild foliage - new inspirations in fashion colours... For too long in eyewear, green has been a less favoured tone. Things have changed this season as designers, inspired by a deep desire to reconnect with the natural world, bring this colour, in its most flattering shades, back into our lives. Tones of moss green, sage, emerald, seaweed, and greentinted crystal are prevalent in the collections moving forward with a decisive confidence rarely seen in eyewear before. Well suited to a variety of complexions and eye colours, the extensive choice of deep 'forest' tones through to translucent colorations ensures a surprisingly easy, wearable styling opportunity which feels fresh, optimistic and new. Bright v soft blue Positive tones inspired by sea and sky, and nature's bounty...since classic blue was the Pantone colour of the year in 2020, its popularity has deepened - and the tonal proposals are ever widening. In other design disciplines and in fashion, ice blue, baby blue, all varieties of pastel and bold, statement tones of aqua (WGSN predicts AI Aqua as a key tone next year) are expected to have ongoing appeal. In eyewear, designers also reflect on blue tones of previous decades, introducing smoky blue vintage-inspired lenses, delicate transparencies and graduated effects using these tones to enhance well-being and comfort in our everyday lives. COLOUR TREND Timeless neutrals IMAGE: lunettes alf
Timeless neutrals Standing the test of time, tortoiseshell enjoys immense popularity as a reliable and stylish colour, evocative of the past, versatile in its ability to adapt to contemporary style. Today, a backlash against fast fashion and cheaply produced apparel, trends in timeless, quality heirloom staples and “seasonless" accessories are growing. In that light, the most iconic sunglass shapes of the past, in exquisite tortoise varieties and delicate animal prints, offer tradition and a retro-smart statement; while finely sculpted glasses in natural tones of honey, sand, crystal and chestnut present an attractive, easy choice. Reassuring, distinguished, with nostalgic vintage allure, these colours and their inextricable link with nature – relate to a world we have embraced and connected with more intimately through 2020 in light of the COVID-19 pandemic than at any other point in our lives. COLOUR TREND Calm-inducing IMAGE: Folc Eyewear
Calm-inducing Drawing on an intense human focus on wellbeing, wellness and selfcare in 2020, the most influential colours of '21 will be those that stimulate happiness, positivity, and feelings of calm, against a global scenario that has represented crisis and chaos. Reflecting a mood that sways toward optimism, mindfulness and relief, this is a colour story that is both refreshing and therapeutic, filled with brightness, natural inspiration - and an underlying optimism. With a mix of delicate blush pinks, coral tones, translucent berry hues, and soothing rose and tangerine pastels for lenses, this palette also features tones inspired by natural textures of elements such as crystals (referencing the power of healing) and stone (stability and endurance).
