THE PROCESS OF WRITING YOUR ACADEMIC STATEMENT It’s Your Process There are many different ways to go about writing an Academic Statement; how we choose to engage depends on each of us and our experiences. Since there is no one-size-fits-all approach, we can offer ideas that have worked for some and supply questions that may help you create your own living document.
Getting Started: Shaping Your Mindset Are you having a hard time even thinking about your Academic Statement? If so, you are not alone. Sometimes, it’s your own mindset that’s keeping you from moving forward. While they can be hard to get out of the way, acknowledging these feelings can open up space for new ideas. Journaling can be one of the paths to help you understand yourself, your perspective, and where you are at this point in time. Try asking yourself how you’re feeling about passing through an annual milestone or graduating from college. You are a real person with real issues that can get in the way of writing. Writing this document gives you the opportunity to reflect and check in with yourself about your undergraduate experiences. Engaging in this process can be a worthwhile effort; the more time you put in, the more you’ll get out of it. In this section we hope to show some options for how you can set your process up for success.
