This style guide is adapted from the Chicago Manual of Style and the Associated Press style guide, as well as Evergreen’s marketing style guidelines. There is no official style guide for the Academic Statement, so whatever you choose to do with your language, we urge you to pay attention to your style regarding capitalization, punctuation, formatting, sentence structure, and more.

Other books might help you with your general writing questions, for example the difference between “effect” and “affect” and more. We recommend Strunk and White’s Elements of Style and Sean Williams’ English Grammar: 100 Tragically Common Mistakes.

The Text Editor on my.evergreen.edu There are limited options for formatting within the user interface for Academic Statements on my.evergreen.edu. Be advised: some options copy and paste well, and some don’t.

Create your document in Word and then copy and paste it into the text box

on my.evergreen. Things like centered text will transfer over from Word, but are not available in the text editor. No matter how you choose to format your document, make sure you take a look at it after you’ve saved it to get a preview of the text.
