Serving our community with high-quality, personalized care and service for nearly 50 years. Winter 2021

Message from the CEO Dear Friends and Neighbors of EvergreenHealth, In many ways these past few months have been even more challenging than the early days of the pandemic. The “5th Wave” of COVID-19 caused by the Delta variant has tested our patience and resilience as we looked expectantly to the end of this pandemic. As 2021 comes to an end, we reflect on the lessons learned of enduring yet another year of the virus. The negative effect of isolation and the importance of connecting with others are clear examples. At EvergreenHealth, we’ve seen first-hand many of the physical and behavioral health challenges that result from people not staying connected with family, friends, co-workers and even their health care providers. We’ve also seen how connecting and collaborating with a care team can be essential to maintaining or restoring your good health. In this issue of Monitor, we share a story of a healthy and vibrant 3-year-old who was born prematurely at 29 weeks, weighing less than a pound. You’ll also learn how the collaboration between EvergreenHealth and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance provides state-of-the-art, holistic cancer care to our local community and beyond. And, you will learn how working with a talented, multi-specialty team, such as the EvergreenHealth Weight Loss and Bariatric Care Clinic, can assist you in accomplishing your health and wellness goals.

EvergreenHealth received an “A” rating from The Leapfrog Group, placing our health system among Washington’s top hospitals for safety and quality. Additionally, a publication evaluating quality and cost of care ranked EvergreenHealth #2 in the nation for providing best value to its patients. Without the connection and collaboration between our staff, physicians, volunteers and patients and their families, recognitions such as these would not be possible. During this holiday season, please reflect on the importance of staying connected and collaborating in your own life. Working together and building relationships supports us in the present and provides hope for the future. Here’s to making 2022 a healthier and happier year, and perhaps, may it be so, an end to this pandemic! Gratefully,

Jeff Tomlin, MD EvergreenHealth Chief Executive Officer

Throughout this year, we’ve remained committed to providing safe, compassionate, high-quality care and service, and we are proud to share recent awards for this work. Healthgrades recognized EvergreenHealth as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals in five specialty areas. For the third year in a row,

Care That Connects Us

Over the last year-and-a-half, the world has often felt physically distant. Yet people everywhere—and certainly those in our broader EvergreenHealth community—have demonstrated remarkable resilience in our ability to collaborate and stay connected. At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, we, like most other health care providers across the globe, rapidly expanded our telehealth capabilities to effectively transition in-person health care appointments to a virtual setting. The quick pivot to virtual care not only protected the health safety of our patients and providers alike, but it also ensured that our patients didn’t delay important preventive care, health care screenings and chronic care management. As a result, as we resume in-person visits, we are seeing positive outcomes from those patients who were able to stay on track with their care. At EvergreenHealth, our goal is to continue expanding access to quality health care by developing technology solutions that offer a seamless, integrated experience for patients and families across our health system. While shifting the traditional health care experience to an online setting was a critical move in ensuring continuity of care, we also recognize the opportunity to develop new, more innovative models that mirror the ways we all interact with digital tools in our daily lives. One of the projects we’re working on in that vein is an upcoming move to Epic’s electronic health record platform. The technology that powers the way we share personal health information is as robust as ever, and we’re looking forward to rolling out new tools that simplify the way patients interact with their care team and manage their medical record. As you’ll read in this issue of Monitor, we believe health care connects us all—it brings families together and strengthens partnerships between patients and their providers. This issue features the story of a 107-year-old EvergreenHealth patient who continues to stay connected with her family thanks to compassionate hospice care. You’ll also learn how our health system’s collaborative, continuity of care helped a Weight Loss and Bariatric Care patient successfully lose a life-saving amount of weight and regain her quality of life.

Miracles & Milestones: After 100 Days in EvergreenHealth’s NICU, Woodinville family has much to celebrate A culture of collaboration across the health system’s Women’s and Children’s Services helped Hattie Burkland thrive Mid-morning on October 1, 2018, Hoogs’ physician noticed that that her baby’s heart rate had decelerated. The team quickly decided to deliver the baby via emergency C-section. At 12:27 p.m—just 30 minutes after her last ultrasound picture—Hattie was born at 29 weeks gestation, weighing less than a pound at only 15 ounces (425 grams). “We were so lucky,” Hoogs shared. “There were so many things that could have gone wrong; the statistics were against us. Our care team saved Hattie’s life.” Hattie was immediately admitted to EvergreenHealth’s NICU, marking the start of a long and uncertain journey, but one filled with hope that she would grow and develop despite the odds.

Elizabeth Hoogs with daughter Hattie, EvergreenHealth Women's & Children's care patients

It was early in Elizabeth Hoogs’ pregnancy when she and her family learned that their newest family member—who hadn’t yet arrived—wasn’t growing properly. At 16 weeks along, her care team identified a rare complication—the baby wasn’t receiving enough blood from the placenta, which was inhibiting her baby’s growth. Though the news was concerning, Hoogs closely followed her doctors’ recommendations with the hope of making it to 28 weeks—a milestone that would indicate her newborn baby could survive, even if she delivered prematurely. Miraculously, they made it and Hoogs was admitted for bed rest and fetal monitoring in the antepartum unit of EvergreenHealth’s Family Maternity Center.

Hoogs and her husband spent as many hours as possible with Hattie in the NICU while also balancing their careers and care for their two-year-old son. When they couldn’t be there, they put their trust in the care team at EvergreenHealth. After 100 days in the NICU, the Burkland/Hoogs family joyously brought a 5-pound baby Hattie home in January 2019. Today, Hattie’s development is on track, and she recently celebrated her third birthday.

107-Year-Old Longtime Kirkland Resident Shares Secrets to Longevity EvergreenHealth Home Health and Hospice patient Lillian Nesheim continues to embrace each new day

If you ask Lillian, she attributes her enduring stamina to good genes thanks to her Finnish background, and a positive outlook rooted in kindness, peace of mind and having a sense of humor. “I don’t let things bother me,” Lillian says.

Lillian Nesheim, EvergreenHealth Hospice Care patient

The year was 1914. Woodrow Wilson was president, the Ford Model T was poised for mass production and the Spanish flu pandemic was just a few years out on the horizon. And in Sedro Wooley, Washington, Lillian Nesheim was born. Today at 107 years young, Lillian continues to live a full life and her longevity serves as an inspiration to many.

6

EvergreenHealth Monitor

“She just has a zest for life,” describes Sue Costello, her daughter-in-law of 57 years. According to Lillian’s family, despite her super-centenarian status, and a broken hip she suffered at age 103 that has caused her to rely on a wheelchair to get around, her health is remarkable and she looks forward to each new day.

CAR E THAT CON N ECTS US

After spending her early years in Skagit Valley and West Seattle, Lillian landed in Kirkland as a newlywed and spent the next several decades raising two sons. Today, she is “Grandma” to four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.   Ever the independent woman, Lilian’s later years were spent traveling, and she lived on her own until age 100. When she moved to an assisted living community, Lillian shared a deep conversation with a family friend that left her embracing her spirituality in profound and meaningful ways. “We saw an incredible difference in her after that,” her son Mike Costello describes. “You could just see a peaceful change in her countenance.” Since then, Lillian has lived comfortably, under EvergreenHealth Home Hospice care—although she does so well at times she doesn’t qualify to be on hospice—at the Crystal Ridge Adult Family Home in Edmonds.

“We all want a legacy of making a difference in people’s lives,” Sue Costello shared. “Lillian has a chance to inspire others with her strength and positivity. She really is wonderful.”

A Bucket List Wish Fulfilled Lillian Nesheim at her 107th birthday party television appearance

When Lillian Nesheim’s birthday was approaching earlier this year, she shared an unexpected wish. She wanted to celebrate her longevity and inspire others through the magic of television. The request came as a surprise to her family. As a girl, she went out of her way to avoid posing for family photos. So, when she asked to be on local TV as a bucket list birthday wish, those around her were eager to make it happen. Lillian’s EvergreenHealth care team, along with Crystal Ridge Adult Family Home and Seattle’s KING-TV were eager to make it happen, too. On July 15, 2021, Lillian was featured on KING 5 News with a segment dedicated to her 107th birthday celebration. Her hair was coiffed, nails painted, and she proudly donned a birthday tiara just for the occasion. To watch the heart-warming segment, visit www.bit.ly/3wheQ9Y.

The Right Level of Care at the Right Time EvergreenHealth’s tips for knowing when to seek urgent or emergency care We’ve all been there. You’re cutting vegetables for dinner and accidentally nick the tip of your finger. Or your son wakes up with a 102-degree fever and a pain on his right side. You know it’s important to seek medical care for you and your family, but with a range of choices and levels of care— from same-day primary care appointments to after-hours urgent care or a trip to the emergency department—it can be challenging to decide which option is most appropriate, especially in the heat of the moment. Here are some quick tips to reference this cold and flu season and beyond. Head to the emergency department or call 911 if someone is experiencing: • • • • • • • •

Chest pain Difficulty breathing Signs of stroke Head injuries or trauma Severe bleeding Loss of vision Severe burns Broken bones

Still unsure which level of care is right for you and your family? EvergreenHealth’s free Nurse Navigator & Healthline offers the community 24/7 access to nurse triage and consulting services. Registered nurses offer home care information and can help you decide if you need to seek urgent care or emergency care. Call 425.899.3000 and press 2 at the prompt, day or night.

Could it be COVID-19?

Urgent care is the best option if someone is experiencing: • Allergies or mild asthma • Sore throat • Cold and flu symptoms • Insect or minor animal bite • Headache • Earache • First-degree burn • Strains and sprains

The symptoms associated with COVID-19 are wide ranging and they can be mild or severe. If you’re sick and have any of the following symptoms, call your primary care provider. They’ll provide instructions for safely getting tested, along with next steps for treatment. • Fever or chills • Cough • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing • Fatigue • Muscle or body aches • Headache • New loss of taste or smell • Sore throat • Congestion or runny nose • Nausea or vomiting • Diarrhea

Want to skip the wait and see a provider from the comfort of your home? Virtual care is available across almost all practices and specialties, including urgent care. In fact, virtual urgent care wait times are typically shorter than in-person clinics. If you need diagnostic testing, including COVID-19 tests, X-rays or blood tests, you’re able to visit any EvergreenHealth urgent care location and complete your tests immediately. Journey to a Better Life EvergreenHealth Weight Loss and Bariatric Care patient, Charlotte, has lost 148 pounds thanks to collaboration and an open mind EvergreenHealth Weight Loss & Bariatric Care

Clincial Care Team

Care team, EvergreenHealth Weight Loss & Bariatric Care

For most of her life, Charlotte never struggled with her weight. It wasn’t until her late 20s after experiencing difficult fertility issues that rapid weight gain, despite her best efforts to manage it, began to significantly impact her life—and her health. Though she didn’t know it at the time, Charlotte had developed metabolic disease, which affects the body’s ability to store and use energy reserves. Her weight gain was contributing to several chronic health complications and after multiple trips to the hospital, she knew it was time to seek expert care. At the encouragement of a compassionate nurse on her pulmonary care team, she made an appointment with EvergreenHealth Weight Loss and Bariatric Care and soon met Dr. Sonia

Hans, a triple board-certified provider in endocrinology and obesity medicine in the practice. The two began working together and over the course of the next year, they optimized her weight management by focusing on nutrition, physical activities that would accommodate mobility issues and overall wellness aimed at addressing mental health and the emotional toll of obesity. But Charlotte was still struggling to lose weight. In many cases, bariatric surgery is a safe and effective tool to support patients’ weight loss journey—though only 1% of patients who are eligible decide to pursue the procedure, according to EvergreenHealth bariatric surgeon Dr. John Dockins.

“Bariatric surgery is a tool to maximize the work that patients like Charlotte are putting in to living a healthy lifestyle. The real work is what she does every day by continuing to prioritize her nutrition, staying committed to physical activity and making sure she’s mentally healthy, too,” Dr. Dockins said. “I am so impressed with her journey.” Charlotte decided to pursue surgery in March 2021 and today, she’s down 148 pounds from her heaviest weight, and has reduced or discontinued most medications she was taking daily. She says she’s never been healthier.

John Dockins, MD, EvergreenHealth Weight Loss and Bariatric Care

“If it weren’t for Dr. Hans and Dr. Dockins, I wouldn’t be here today,” Charlotte shared. “Now, whenever I struggle, my physicians, my nutritionist Christina and the whole team help me with whatever I need. They are my number one advocates, and I can’t say enough great things about them.” Now, Charlotte connects with patients who are considering bariatric surgery, as she is passionate about breaking down the stigma surrounding weight loss to help others live their healthiest life. “I always thought bariatric surgery was the easy way out, but it isn’t. It was the right way out,” Charlotte said.

EvergreenHealth Weight Loss and Bariatric Care offers three pathways to help patients lose weight, keep it off and improve their quality of life. 1. Healthiest Best Weight Loss Program: Meet with a dietitian who will help you establish dietary, lifestyle and wellness goals through motivational coaching, individualized food planning and wellness opportunities. 2. Physician Partnered Weight Loss Program: Work directly with an endocrinologist specialized in obesity medicine who will perform a metabolic evaluation and work with the dietitian team to determine when or if weight loss medication is appropriate in addition to improving nutrition, increasing activity and working through behavior modifications. 3.

Bariatric Surgery Program: In addition to the above programs, bariatric surgery is another proven treatment for those with advanced metabolic disease or those unable to maintain weight loss due to medical and physiological factors.

Did you know? EvergreenHealth’s Weight Loss and Bariatric Care program is one of only 31 programs in the nation that has met the highest standards for safety and quality care. It is an accredited Comprehensive Center with Obesity Medicine Qualifications by the American College of Surgeons and the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program. Conveniently Located

The 22,000-square-foot, 20-bed ICU is located on the third floor of the Silver Tower on the Kirkland campus and relocates the unit from the oldest part of the hospital to a newer, more convenient and efficient location. By situating the new ICU closer to other clinical specialties and amenities, it eases the experience for patients and their families during their time of need.

Built for the Future

The new ICU’s state-of-the-art technology includes upgraded equipment and innovative technology in an environment that best supports patient care and outcomes. The unit’s design allows for structural flexibility that promotes the future integration of new systems, upgraded medical equipment and technological innovations as they emerge, meaning the unit can plan for the future without requiring additional renovations.

Thoughtful, Inclusive Spaces Importantly, the Lee Johnson Family ICU was designed to create intentional spaces within patient rooms, and across the unit, that help families feel welcome and included in their loved one’s care. The unit also houses private consultation rooms for families to gather as a group, seek solitude or talk with their clinical team.

Enhanced Patient Safety

The ICU integrates important features that allow the clinical team to provide the safest care and service. It allows clinical staff to administer dialysis, when necessary, and offers staff ceiling lifts to support and help patients that cannot move independently. Each nurse station is now equipped with monitors and a visible line of sight to each patient.

With Heartfelt Gratitude Donors from the 2020 Evergreen Gala along with community supporters, including Christopher and Margery Yetman, the Chinese Community Alliance and Emerald Heights, were instrumental in providing this continued environment for safe, familycentered medical care as our community continues to grows. Our sincerest thanks to those who helped fund the equipment and technology needed to build EvergreenHealth's ICU of the future!

Recognized for Excellence in Critical Care Healthgrades recently recognized EvergreenHealth’s Critical Care team’s performance as among the top 10% of hospitals nationwide for the 8th consecutive year.

Gratitude From Our Patients and Families “Every single nurse, nurse helper, doctor, nutritionist, housekeeper and staff member… Thank you very, very much for your lifegiving support.” “Our father was admitted for COVID to the ICU for treatment. The staff extended extraordinary support and assistance so that the rest of Dad’s family could be assured he was receiving the best possible care. We particularly appreciated the extra time given to be with our Dad and providing the BlueJeans video conferencing so that all his family could be 'with’ him. It was so meaningful to him to see his children (and spouses), grandchildren and great-grandchild all on one screen, able to speak with him, share stories and reminisce before he passed away. We are forever grateful to all who made his last days as good as they could be.”

EvergreenHealth Monitor

At just 28 weeks pregnant, Aidan’s mom developed a lifethreatening condition that required the immediate, premature delivery of her newborn son. Aidan weighed just 1 pound, 8 ounces at birth and spent 105 days in the EvergreenHealth Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

“I had no reason to suspect I would have a problematic pregnancy. I never would have guessed we would have needed the care we received at EvergreenHealth, but we did. And you never know when someone you really love will have a baby arriving way too soon. To have world class care, in every way possible, and to be so near to home—it made all the difference,” shared Lori, Aidan’s mom. Sixteen years later, Aidan is now a sophomore in high school. He towers over his mom and enjoys snowboarding and playing tennis. He’s a writer and excels in drama class. His peers say he’s funny and engaging, and his future is bright. Aidan’s parents are grateful to EvergreenHealth and are ready to give back.

The Impact of Your Generosity

ParaPac Ventilator

With your generosity, the EvergreenHealth Monroe Foundation was able to purchase a ParaPac ventilator. A ParaPac is a simple transportation ventilator that can be used to provide ventilator support to intubated patients that require mechanical ventilation. In addition to being a completely mobile device that can be used during patient transport, it is also compatible with the MRI scanner, which enables providers to take patients who are on the ventilator safely into the MRI unit. Thanks to generous donors, this previously unavailable service is now available to all patients at EvergreenHealth Monroe. Megan Wirsching, MSN, RN, EvergreenHealth Monroe Chief Nursing Officer

“As we reflect on the last year and the impacts of the global pandemic in so many facets of our life, we were challenged to be resourceful, resilient and flexible with the ongoing changing needs, especially in the health care sector. Your unwavering support and generosity has made a positive impact in the health of not only our staff, but our community, too.”
