Message from the CEO

Dear Neighbors,

Welcome to our latest issue of Monitor, which includes our 2021 Community Annual Report.

As a community-owned health system, EvergreenHealth serves a unique role in providing access to unmatched quality care and service to all residents and families in our growing region. Monitor provides a forum for us to share stories of those in our community who have received world-class care at EvergreenHealth – helping inspire others in our community to live and feel well.

In this issue, you’ll meet a young athlete who experienced significant head trauma while playing baseball and was treated by a team of outstanding doctors with a successful outcome. We are very proud of our exceptional orthopedic team and physicians, some of whom you will also meet, like Dr. Camille Clinton, who specializes in treating women’s orthopedic and sports medicine conditions and injuries as one of our region’s few female, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons.

Providing compassionate, high-quality care is the common theme behind these stories and is part of what makes EvergreenHealth truly extraordinary. We first opened our doors 50 years ago because of the community’s shared vision to provide access to trusted health care close to home. We remain committed to growing with you and the families we serve over these many years to provide the spectrum of health services you need.

With your support, we continue to build upon our flagship Kirkland campus and convenient locations throughout the Eastside community with modern facilities and the most advanced technology available, as you’ll read about in these pages. You will also learn about some of the projects

we are undertaking to update our growing organization and how we are raising the bar on patient experience this fall as we transition to a new electronic medical record (EMR) system, Epic. Not only will this new EMR put access to your records and test results, scheduling appointments online, and talking with your doctor right at your fingertips, the new record will more seamlessly connect with other health care providers in the Puget Sound region for even safer, more coordinated care.

Our shared legacy and commitment to you are reflected in our achievement as Washington’s only public hospital district to be recognized as one of America’s 50 Best™ hospitals by Healthgrades, placing our health system in the top 1% of hospitals across the nation for quality care. This achievement allows us to recruit some of the brightest and most talented physicians and care providers in the country. Together, we have created a truly special place for our residents to receive their care.

Thank you, as always, for the opportunity to be your partner in health. On behalf of our physicians, staff, and volunteers, we look forward to continuing to advance the health of our community so that you can live your life to the fullest.

Sincerely,

50 Years as Your Community Hospital

This year has marked a special year-long celebration of EvergreenHealth’s 50th anniversary of service to our community. We are profoundly grateful for the opportunity to serve as your trusted health care partner, providing exceptional care and service to those we’ve known for many years as well as those who are new to our area.

As we reflect on our history, we’re also looking ahead to the future. Being a top-rated, community-owned health system means we’re here to not only provide the highest-quality care, safety and service to you, your family and your neighbors, but also to provide equal access to that care for everyone in our community, regardless of circumstance.

When we think about our accountability to our community, coupled with our vision for the future, there’s no question that innovation and technology play leading roles in our commitment to grow alongside you. The impact of technology has empowered us to expect convenience and transparency in all aspects of our lives, and health care is no exception. We’re looking forward to creating a more seamless integration of health services as we continue to innovate, keeping our patients at the center of all that we do.

That’s why we’re excited to continue investment in digital health capabilities, as you’ll read in this issue. We’re also transitioning to the Epic electronic medical record system, which will help us level up our coordination capabilities and enhance continuity of care for our patients.

While we continue to improve health care for our community, our 50-year legacy only grows stronger. We were founded as a public hospital district, which means we will always provide our community access to superior health care through the programs that you fund via voter-approved tax levies, such as free and low-cost health education classes, our 24/7 nurse Healthline, and our youth mental health programs.

We know that you and your families have many options when it comes to selecting your health care partners, and it’s our privilege to serve you today and into the future.

Female-focused Orthopedic & Sports Care

DID YOU KNOW?

Dr. Camille Clinton is one of the Pacific Northwest’s few fellowship-trained female orthopedic surgeons practicing at EvergreenHealth. Her philosophy is to listen with compassion and respect to help patients feel heard and empowered by knowing all of their treatment options.

Kirkland-resident Tracy Kosa started experiencing excruciating pain in both her knees in her early 30s. But it wasn’t until Kosa’s knee finally gave out while she was exercising that she went to a specialist and discovered the cartilage beneath her kneecap had completely deteriorated.

Kosa was soon referred to Dr. Clinton at EvergreenHealth. Finally, she felt like she was being listened to and understood as Dr. Clinton walked her through the various treatment options that aligned with her preferences and needs.

“I felt completely seen, heard and understood.”

When Sarah Del Degan suffered a series of skiing injuries, starting with a meniscus tear and ending with a ruptured ACL, she knew she would be in good hands with Dr. Camille Clinton, a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon at EvergreenHealth. Dr. Clinton had treated Del Degan’s son and was impressed with both the clinical outcome and overall experience.

“Whenever I went to see Dr. Clinton, she always asked me about how my son was doing and was extremely kind and thoughtful. She really listened to me. I am very active, so undergoing surgery was a big deal, and I was worried about the recovery time,” Del Degan said.

According to Dr. Clinton, whether surgery is the best option for a patient depends on multiple factors such as other injuries, including meniscus or additional ligament injuries to the knee, age and activity profile/goals. Dr. Clinton takes the time to evaluate and understand these factors prior to deciding on the final treatment plan together, alongside her patients.

“The kinds of activities she enjoys, like hiking, skiing, tennis, are activities that require pivoting, twisting and lateral movements. Given her desire to return to these activities without limitations and to resolve her instability symptoms, she decided to move forward with ACL surgery,” Dr. Clinton explained.

Today, Del Degan is pain-free and recovering exceptionally well, planning skiing trips with friends and family and getting back to the activities she loves.

“I felt completely seen, heard and understood throughout the whole process. I am so grateful for Dr. Clinton,” she said.

“Everyone’s body is different. Everyone has different lifestyle goals and activity levels. It’s imperative to me that my patients are equal partners in making health care decisions. I want them to feel fully confident and comfortable before we move forward with treatment options. We’re a team,” said Dr. Clinton.

Together, Kosa and Dr. Clinton determined a care plan which she followed for four years before they decided to pursue a partial replacement of her right knee in 2019 and then her left knee in 2021.

“I had a lot of questions for Dr. Clinton before we pursued surgery. She provided me with every resource I needed to ease my concerns, and she and her team were always available for questions,” Kosa said.

With both surgeries a success, Kosa is continuing her daily (modified) workouts without pain today.

Women are more likely to tear their ACL than men. In fact, the risk of an ACL injury for female soccer players is three to four times greater than it is for men. Learn why women are more predisposed to ACL injuries and ways to prevent them in Dr. Clinton’s episode on EvergreenHealth’s podcast, Check-Up Chat. www.evergreenhealth.com/ news/podcasts

Trauma Care Close to Home

EvergreenHealth provides the Eastside’s highest levels of trauma care that helped one family overcome a significant sports injury.

This spring, student-athlete Will Woodward was finishing up his senior year at Eastlake High School when he suffered a severe head injury during baseball practice. He and another player collided while diving for a fly ball, with Woodward’s forehead absorbing much of the impact.

“It was the worst pain I’ve ever felt – times three,” Woodward recalled. Still, he remained remarkably composed, unaware of his injury’s significance.

At home, his mom Elise’s maternal instincts kicked in. She knew something was off and took him immediately to EvergreenHealth’s Redmond emergency department.

A CAT scan revealed a full fracture of Woodward’s forehead and bleeding in his sinus. He would need emergency craniofacial surgery to address his injuries and repair the fracture, so he was transferred to EvergreenHealth’s Kirkland medical center – coincidentally, the same hospital where he was born.

As the family formulated a treatment plan with EvergreenHealth’s trauma specialists, the Woodwards were relieved to know he was going to be OK, but the bigger blow was learning that his senior-year baseball season was over.

“Finding out I had to undergo major surgery and that I wouldn’t be able to finish out the season was pretty

approach from a multidisciplinary team of specialists, including his emergency physician Dr. Becky Isackson; Dr. Kris Day, a craniofacial surgeon specializing in reconstruction; along with surgical technicians and many other providers highly skilled in trauma services.

Because of the location of the fracture, the team would need to shave his head to make a fairly large incision in a place that wouldn’t leave a visible scar after healing.

The procedure also involved placing titanium mesh over the fractured area, a complex surgical procedure that can only be performed at institutions with exemplary trauma

“When we can provide excellent care in our patient’s own community, we often see that they are able to recover more quickly. His experience is a testament to the investment EvergreenHealth has made in ensuring patients have access to the highest level of trauma care offered on the Eastside,” said Dr. Day.

Woodward’s surgery went well, he returned home after a few nights in the hospital, thankful that his injuries would heal, but uncertain if he’d have to miss more activities planned for his senior year.

However, to his surprise, his post-surgery check-ups confirmed that he was doing well enough to be able to attend his senior prom just one week following the procedure.

Now, Woodward is off to attend the University of Washington

“But all of my doctors were amazingly kind and caring in walking me through what to expect.”
“Finding out I had to undergo major surgery and that I wouldn’t be able to finish out the season was pretty devastating news,” Woodward described.

Charting Our Future: Upgrading to Meet Community Needs

Over the last 50 years, EvergreenHealth has grown alongside the expanding Eastside community.

Beginning as a one-building general hospital in 1972, EvergreenHealth now serves patients and families as a twohospital health system, offering care from a network of medical specialty clinics, including 13 community-based facilities that provide essential access to emergency, specialty, primary and urgent care.

As the health system has grown and evolved to meet community needs, it’s done so thoughtfully, following a strategic blueprint that matches anticipated community growth with infrastructure upgrades and capital projects intended to safely accommodate patients and families.

The blueprint, known as EvergreenHealth’s Master Facilities Plan, was developed through a strategic planning process to ensure that the health system provides the safest environment for patients and staff, capable of accommodating the

Phase One

• Built out the 4th and 5th floors in DeYoung Pavilion to create the EvergreenHealth Neuroscience, Spine and Orthopedic Institute. Musculoskeletal and Orthopedic practices moved into the institute, forming one integrated center of excellence.

• Built out two floors of the Silver Tower to house a 31-bed Progressive Care Unit and a 31-bed Medical Surgical Unit.

• A new Kenmore facility opened, offering primary and urgent care, lab, imaging, 3D mammography and physical therapy.

• A new Mill Creek facility opened offering urgent care, lab and imaging.

Phase Two

• Construction of a brand-new intensive care unit, which relocated the Kirkland medical center’s ICU to the Silver Tower.

• Opening of a new Urgent Care location at Totem Lake.

• Renovations to the Family Maternity Center.

Phases Three, Four and Five

• Health system leaders are currently evaluating community needs and expansion efforts to chart the next phases of the plan.

How have levy funds helped meet community needs?

• Each year, levy funds support a range of programs designed to provide quality health care, services and resources—often at no charge to the community—to meet patients’ and families’ wellness needs.

• In 2004, voters approved a $120 million bond to fund the construction of the Silver Tower and a new emergency department on the Kirkland campus.

• In anticipation of the community’s future needs and growth, EvergreenHealth constructed a 10-story tower, providing new space for care and thoughtfully planning for future growth with four floors for future use built at 2007 pricing, later put to use in 2017 to create new patient care areas in response to the community’s growth.

Envisioning the future of EvergreenHealth’s NICU

In the 50 years since it first opened its doors to our community, EvergreenHealth established itself as a leader in women’s and children’s care. In 1996 EvergreenHealth became the first Baby-Friendly Hospital in North America –the gold standard of maternity care awarded by UNICEF and the World Health Organization.

Over the years EvergreenHealth pioneered new approaches to the birthing experience and the continuum of care that supports parents, building a robust culture committed to clinical excellence and family-centered care. But best of all, it became a trusted place of care for the tens of thousands who chose EvergreenHealth as the birthplace of their child.

Families continue to choose EvergreenHealth: In 2021, EvergreenHealth delivered 4,753 babies, a nearly 9% increase from the previous year – a testament to both EvergreenHealth’s clinical reputation and the growth of our community.

To respond to the needs of our growing community, EvergreenHealth staff and clinical leaders came together to envision the future of Women’s and Children’s Services. A newly designed facility will enhance safety and patient experience with the inclusion of more advanced newborn wellness equipment in each birthing suite, thoughtful communal spaces for families, dedicated space for critical resources like on-hand donor breast milk and an Obstetrics Emergency Department that will focus on the care, observation and emergent needs of pregnant women.

With part of the facility completed – and now open to the community – we start work on Phase II of construction: the expansion of EvergreenHealth’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

We are committed to serving the most vulnerable newborns in our community, which includes building out additional specialized intensive care rooms to keep babies close to home and reduce transfers to outside facilities. To expand our NICU facility with 13 additional patient rooms and invest in the safety and care of our tiniest patients, we need your philanthropic support. Your support ensures that we can keep families close to home with exceptional neonatal intensive care on the Eastside.

Our daughters, Riley and Sydney, spent six weeks in the NICU at EvergreenHealth after their birth. Thinking about them, almost two decades ago, in their tiny incubators, it puts it all in perspective. All that matters is that your children are safe and healthy. We wanted to honor the team at EvergreenHealth that were part of their care and helped our daughters get to where they are today.

Community Benefit Spotlight

Supporting patients and families with levy-funded programs

As a public hospital district, EvergreenHealth provides a special benefit to the greater community. Every year, the organization is entrusted as responsible investors of the community’s resources, to use tax levy funds to meet important community health and wellness needs.

In 2021, more than $6.8 million in levy funds were invested back into community health through a range of programs designed to provide quality health care, services and resources—often at no charge to the community.

Providing Education and Resources for Living Well EvergreenHealth Community Education Services

EvergreenHealth’s Community Education Services provides hundreds of free and low-cost seminars, workshops and health education classes each year that offer resources to community members for living well. Whether it is cooking demonstrations to inspire nutritious eating, exercise groups, emergency preparedness or parenting classes, the health system offers a wide range of curricula for the community’s benefit to address diverse needs and interests.

Among the year-round programs, EvergreenHealth’s Childbirth and Early Parenting Education resources offer dozens of classes to help families navigate the joys and challenges of parenting. Its Parent-Baby Groups provide education and support through facilitator-led discussions that encourage new families to share successes and challenges on a range of topics, including feeding, relationships, postpartum adjustment, developmental stages, sleep and more.

“We heard about EvergreenHealth’s Parent-Baby Groups while we were expecting our daughter Iris, and we knew we wanted to join. We recently moved to this area, and the group has been so helpful for meeting and connecting with other families who are sharing our experience as new parents. Especially during COVID, it just has helped to not to feel so alone. I’ve also really appreciated the guest speakers and all the information shared by our facilitators; it makes a difference having resources we know we can trust.”

Supporting Eastside Seniors and Caregivers EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care

EvergreenHealth Geriatric Care is the only practice on the Eastside dedicated to exclusively serving families and patients who are 65 years and older with specialized care without requiring a referral.

Just as pediatricians focus on the health needs of children, geriatric care providers focus on the complex health needs of seniors. Working in partnership with an interdisciplinary team of board-certified specialists, Geriatric Care providers include geriatricians, nurses, social workers and pharmacists—all with special training and experience assisting seniors.

The Geriatric Care team provides comprehensive assessments, evaluating patients’ medical conditions, cognitive status, functional ability and mental health needs to determine the most suitable treatment for each person. This experienced team also works hand-in-hand with each patient’s family, and coordinates with other health care providers to create an individualized care plan designed to empower seniors with choice and independence.

Understanding Our Community’s Health Needs

King County Community Health Needs Assessment

Northshore Senior Center

In 2021, EvergreenHealth continued its partnership with Northshore Senior Center (NSC), a Bothell-based nonprofit which provides resources, programs and services for Eastside seniors. After pivoting to a largely all online format in 2020, NSC slowly began to safely return to in-person engagement for many of its classes and programs in 2021.

In addition to their well-attended virtual caregiver support groups NSC offers a variety of classes and programs that help keep participants active and connected. Among its programs, NSC offers Enhance©Wellness, an evidence-based, health management program designed to help participants set goals and learn strategies for making positive choices to improve their physical and/or emotional well-being.

IN 2021, EVERGREENHEALTH’S PARTNERSHIP WITH NORTHSHORE SENIOR CENTER:

In 2021, new patient access grew by more than 29%, improving the health status, autonomy and quality of life for senior patients and their families.

EvergreenHealth participates in King County Hospitals for a Healthier Community (HHC), a collaborative of 10 hospitals/health systems in King County, that includes Public Health – Seattle & King County. HHC produces a Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) that analyzes community inequities, strengths, and health needs. The CHNA presents community-identified priorities, a detailed description of the

Served 245 family caregivers through 927 touchpoints via programming, consultations and services.

As a full-time caregiver for her husband who lives with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), Jeanne Clark has been a long-time participant in many of Northshore Senior Center’s support groups and educational programs. When the active 80-year-old began suffering from significant fatigue and muscle weakness, largely because she was eating fewer meals as she focused on her husband’s care needs, the Social Services/ Wellness team at NSC suggested she explore the Center’s Enhance©Wellness program.

The NSC Adult Day Health program offered 84 virtual health and wellness classes, to encourage movement, fine motor skills, strengthening and other rehab services.

Helped 238 older adults maintain and improve their mental and emotional well-being through support groups, personal consultations, meditation, conversation groups and more.

“It was the perfect solution for me because I’m very goal oriented. I had struggled with making progress on my own, but my Enhance©Wellness coach gave me the support and structure to follow a plan that works. It is a self-directed program, so I have to put in the work, but Lydia is there to regularly check-in to provide support and encouragement as I work toward my goal of regaining strength and energy. It has been a life saver.”

Resources for Responding to Students in Crisis Youth Mental Health Programs

With the support of community levy dollars, EvergreenHealth’s Youth Mental Health Task Force brings together youth, other organizations, and community members who share a passion for supporting young adults. The task force meets regularly for inspiring discussions that encourage the exchange of information and resources among community members and foster grassroots solutions.

The task force continues to expand its reach beyond EvergreenHealth, forging partnerships with other like-minded community organizations to develop programming and resources. In 2021, EvergreenHealth continued to partner with NAMI Eastside, the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, to host monthly hour-long forums on educational topics geared toward youth and community members who work with young people. Expert guest speakers presented a range of topics, including mindfulness, suicide prevention, bipolar disorder, childhood trauma and many others.

“With EvergreenHealth’s support, we are bringing needed programs into Eastside schools, including Youth Mental Health First Aid trainings, which provide participants with tools to help adolescents experiencing a mental health crisis or addiction challenge. We are also piloting an evidence-based program, Cope2Thrive, which is designed to help children, teens and young adults deal with anxiety, stress and depression by teaching them how to develop the skills needed to stop negative or unhelpful thoughts and start thinking, feeling and behaving in more positive ways. These are just a few of the things that have been possible to help support the young people in our community thanks to our partnership.”

– Barbie Collins Young, Executive Director of NAMI Eastside

Support for Northshore School District Students

Grant Funds Full-Time Mental Health Therapists

EvergreenHealth levy dollars continued to provide funding for full-time, onsite mental health therapists for each high school in the Northshore School District who support students referred by high school guidance counselors. In 2021, the district’s mental health therapists met with students individually and in small groups to address their needs.

FOR THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR NORTHSHORE SCHOOL DISTRICT MENTAL HEALTH THERAPISTS:

Served 1,264 students Held 3,364 total visits

Advancing STEM Education Partnering with local schools

With help from the community’s levy dollars, EvergreenHealth partners with local school districts to provide middle school and high school students with information and education related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

EvergreenHealth’s nine-year partnership with Juanita High School’s Global Health STEM program continued in 2021, which provided opportunities for EvergreenHealth leaders and physicians to present virtually as guest speakers on important health care topics. The interactive sessions provide students with the insight into health care-related career fields and encourage them to ask questions and immerse themselves in learning about career paths in science, health care and many more industries.

“I cannot stress enough the importance of this funding from EvergreenHealth as we have seen a reduction of crisis visits while being able to assist more students. During our second year of receiving the EvergreenHealth grant, the Northshore School District has been able to benefit by continuing to serve students from all demographics in the district by supporting their mental health needs. Due to the shortage of mental health providers in the area, our contracted therapists were able to provide continuous mental health services to families throughout the school year. Once again, we were grateful to have the opportunity to provide support for our secondary schools through funding from EvergreenHealth.”

Message from the Board Chair & Chief Philanthropy Officer

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your extraordinary support of EvergreenHealth. Throughout the challenges of the pandemic, you have continued to show your commitment by investing in local health care and ensuring our community has access to the best technology, programs and services available. This focus on quality has resulted in notable awards, including being named one of America’s 50 Best™ hospitals by Healthgrades again, placing EvergreenHealth in the top 1% of hospitals in the nation for clinical excellence. This honor comes as we celebrate our 50th anniversary of serving this region.

As we embark on our next 50 years, your support has never been more important. The Foundation is a vital partner with the health system in helping to fund critical programs and services. In 2021, donors contributed more than $3 million to help fund the buildout of a new Intensive Care Unit in EvergreenHealth’s Silver Tower. The Heart Care Center benefited from more than $400,000 in support to construct and equip a cardiac catheterization lab, and nearly $500,000 was invested in our Hospice Care Center. Thank you for helping EvergreenHealth meet the needs of our growing region!

You may have noticed a new face at the Foundation. This spring, I joined the team as the Chief Philanthropy Officer. I came to EvergreenHealth with nearly 30 years of experience in health care philanthropy and marketing. EvergreenHealth is a wonderful organization dedicated to health care excellence, and I feel so fortunate to be partnering with Anthony to help lead the Foundation efforts.

Thank you again for your support.

Sincerely,

Foundation2021 Community Annual Report15 16

Message from the Board Chair and Director

Dear Neighbors,

In 2021, we were all affected by the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. With all the changes that have unfolded in daily life, we are proud to stand by EvergreenHealth Monroe to support our joint mission of working together to enrich the health and well-being of every life we touch

Our Foundation is supported by a strong group of volunteer Board of Trustees, who made direct and impactful investments throughout 2021 to enhance the care and services at EvergreenHealth Monroe. We did not do this alone. The growth and impact of the EvergreenHealth Monroe Foundation are only made possible by the vast array of support from our patients, local community, staff, and sponsoring businesses. Together, through their intentional giving, we were able to provide support for new mobile ventilators, GYN stretcher, rapid blood infuser, EKG machines, nursing education funds, and bus tickets for patients needing help with transportation.

The Foundation’s signature fundraising event, Blue Jeans and Boots Gala, was again held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions. The weeklong virtual experience featured a robust silent auction and a virtual program. Funds raised through the Gala supported a new state-of-the-art digital imaging suite that delivers the highest quality imaging, advanced technology for less radiation exposure to the patient, and returned fluoroscopy services to EvergreenHealth Monroe. Thank you to everyone who supported the Gala and made it a resounding success.

In 2022, our Foundation looks forward to hosting our first in-person Gala in three years on September 23, 2022. For more event details and to learn how you can participate, please visit www.bluejeansandbootsgala.com. We thank everyone, including our Foundation’s Board of Trustees, who prioritize investing in our local health care and bring real enhancements to EvergreenHealth Monroe.

Sincerely,

EvergreenHealth Awarded for Outstanding Hospital Safety and Quality Care

EvergreenHealth has been recognized by independent organizations The Leapfrog Group and Healthgrades, which place the health system among the area’s highest-ranked hospitals for safety, stroke care, pulmonary care and critical care.

These latest accolades include an “A” rating for patient safety, awarded to EvergreenHealth for the seventh consecutive year by Leapfrog, a leading watchdog organization on hospital quality and safety.

EvergreenHealth also received recognition from Healthgrades as part of the independent organization’s newly released state rankings data for clinical outcomes, which distinguishes EvergreenHealth as the No. 1 hospital in the state for stroke care, and as the highest-ranked hospital in the Seattle area for pulmonary and critical care. The Healthgrades rankings place EvergreenHealth among the top two hospitals in the state for pulmonary and critical care, as well.

These rankings put EvergreenHealth in the top 5% in the nation for stroke and pulmonary care, and in the top 10% in the nation for critical care, among the 4,500 hospitals analyzed by Healthgrades nationwide. We’re proud to offer safe, high-quality care our patients can trust.
