Don't take the bait

While you're surfing the internet, getting you to visit a website is both an art and a science.

However, eCriminals also work hard at this. Clickbait is typically something eye-catching that makes you click on a link that invariably ends up you landing on (at worst) a page full of malware, or (at best) a page full of adverts that clog up your PC and annoy the heck out of you. What can happen?

Well here are five of the possible outcomes:

Dangerous links can host malware and trojans. If the SHOCKING headline you clicked on doesn’t directly host the online threat, the next link might.

Content flipping is the old bait-and-switch method of using a post or page that has achieved virality and switching the content for malicious purposes.

Free IQ tests and credit checks can be examples of phishing. You are asked to fill in personal info. This is asking for trouble – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Clickjacking is one of the more subtle methods used. Clicking on a button that advertises one thing but really does another, without the user or the site owner’s knowledge.

Hidden opt-ins for quizzes and contests from your social profile can allow the provider to access and use your personal data.
