Donation fuels dreams €6,800 raised for future Olympians

A RECENT fundraising effort has changed the lives of many young athletes in the Marina Alta region. Thanks to a total of €6,800 raised, €3,000 of which was donated by the Teulada Moraira Lions, the local rhythmic gymnastics club has been able to upgrade key training equipment.

They are the only sports club offering rhythm gymnastics between Gandia and Alicante, which means for children and young people with Olympic dreams, this non-profit is their best shot at success. In fact, some of the clubs’ young people will compete at the top level, Via Olimpica, in the Spanish Nationals in 2025. The club will also host the Autonomico this year in Javea.

The Lions were invited by the sports club to a training session to see the new equip-

ment. The foam pit is an area that gymnasts can fall into safely. It had been 10 years since the pit was installed, and it required an upgrade.

The event showcased why the new equipment was so important, both for safety and to enhance the experience of those training at the centre. According to the club, the donation has ‘totally changed their training regime’ for the better.

The Club and Teulada Moraira Lions are looking forward to the centre and its young athletes flourishing even further in the future and “to seeing Spain’s future Olympians emerge from this talented and hard-working Javea squad.”

They are asking for any other local businesses that want to offer sponsorships to reach out.

A NEW exhibition at La Senieta, organised by the European Union of Women, officially opens at 7pm on Thursday May 15. The Unity of Women by artists of the Marina Alta, is to be followed by a concert in the theatre below the gallery.

The Marina Alta traditionally draws painters in, because of its beauty and the quality of its light, however these particular artists already knew the area intimately. “Living here for 15 years, I have become passionate

about portraits,” said Artist Ana Martynovskya.

“Responding to the theme of Unity in diversity, my triptych portrays the soul’s journey through different stages - from youth to maturity. It’s not just one woman’s story, but a symbol of the soul’s evolution across eras and lifetimes.”

President Margaret Hales, said, “This exhibition is a testament to women’s natural ability to work together.” She thanked Councillor Rosana, from the Teula-

da Town Hall and the artists again, for raising the issues of women’s equality through their art.

The inauguration date is set for Thursday, May 15.

Opening at 7pm with a special performance by Vocas de Gaia at 8pm. The Exhibition is open to the public free of charge. The Voces de Gaia concert is €5.

CALPE has trademarked one of its finest ingredients: Calpe white shrimp.

The local government will soon turn it into an official logo to help promote the ingredient and area as a zone of food excellence. It has been reported that more than 2,000 kilos of white shrimp are brought into Calpe port daily.

The sea critter is used locally in many dishes and has formed a staple of the gastronomy events held in the town. The shrimp even featured prominently at the Tourism event FITUR, where Calpe promoted the area as a centre for tourism.

In 2024, Calpe invited Michelin star chefs like Jose Manuel Miguel, to cook with the seafood in their first celebration of Calpe’s White Shrimp Day. All of this has culminated in a successful campaign to trademark the shrimp.

Paco Catala of the town’s fishermen’s guild said, “white prawns are currently the star product of the Calpe Guild.”

He went on to say that the guild and the town hall intended to establish the product in restaurants and to bring more knowledge of its potential as a food product.

So, when visiting the seaside town check the restaurant menus to find a true taste of Calpe.

Phone help for Spanish taxes Book early to avoid delays

FILING your Renta 2024 in Spain doesn’t have to mean forms or waiting rooms. This year, the Agencia Tributaria is offering a phone-based tax return service for those who prefer personal guidance over digital tools.

You can now file your income tax by phone - no need to visit a tax office. However, you must book your appointment in advance.

Booking and deadlines The phone service started on Monday May 6, and appointments can be booked until Thursday June 27. If you owe money and want to pay by direct debit, file by Tuesday June 25 to avoid penalties.

Once booked, a Tax Agency representative will call during your chosen slot to help complete your return. Be ready - phone charged, documents at hand - and note the call may arrive slightly earlier or later than scheduled. Missed calls may not be retried.

Who should use it?

The service is ideal for older adults, those in rural areas, or anyone preferring a human touch. Even if you’re tech-savvy, having expert help ensures accuracy.

Spain’s tech grant IF you’re self-employed or running a small business in Spain, there’s good news. The government is offering a €1,000 grant to help upgrade your computer. It’s part of an update to the Digital Kit programme, aimed at pushing freelancers and micro-businesses into the digital age. The grant is for freelancers and businesses with fewer than three employees, under Segment III of the Digital Kit scheme. The extra €1,000 must go towards buying a new computer with specific requirements: at least four processor cores, 2.9 GHz speed, 16GB RAM, a 512GB SSD, and the latest Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. It must also run a professional operating system with cybersecurity features. There’s a catch: for the first year, the computer technically belongs to the Digital Agent supplier. After 12 months, you can fully own it by paying just 15 per cent of the price. Applying is simple. Visit the AceleraPyme website, register, complete a short self-assessment, and select the ‘Secure Workstation’ option. Choose an official Digital Agent to handle the purchase. The €1,000 is deducted directly from the invoice, not paid to you. If you already received the initial €2,000 grant, you can still apply for the €1,000 top-up starting June 2025. How long you receive payments depends on how long you worked from three months for 90 days worked, up to 21 months if you have family responsibilities.

To apply, you must register as a jobseeker, sign an activity agreement, and prove you don’t exceed income limits.

Applications can be made online, in

person with an appointment, or by post. You’ll need your ID, bank details, proof of family dependents if relevant, and your latest tax return. EU citizens must show their NIE certificate; non-EU nationals must show a valid residence card.

If your family situation changes, you can extend your support - but you must notify SEPE within 12 months. The subsidy isn’t automatic, so applying within six months of unemployment is crucial. In an uncertain job market, this little-known help could make a real difference.

A biometric future PAYING with your face or fingerprint could soon be the new normal in Spain. Banks and major retailers are preparing to roll out biometric payment systems as early as 2026, meaning no more cards or phones needed. Instead, shoppers would register their fingerprint, face or iris with their bank - and use it to pay directly at the till.

No internet connection required, no PIN to remember, just a quick scan. The system is designed to be safer than traditional methods, with biometric data being unique and much harder to steal than a physical wallet or mobile phone.

A recent survey by Visa found that nearly half of Spaniards believe biometric payments are more secure, and 36 per cent say they would be happy to start using it within five years. Supermarkets, pharmacies and small shops are expected to be the first to offer the new payment option, needing only minor upgrades like biometric scanners. Given that millions already unlock phones and bank apps using fingerprint or facial recognition, the jump to full biometric payments might feel more natural than futuristic.

Spain’s move reflects a growing global trend towards ultra-secure, seamless transactions. If all goes according to plan, by 2026 your body could be your new wallet - no card, no phone, just you.

LA VILLAJOYOSA held a spectacular Medieval Market, at the mouth of the river Amadorio, over the May bank holiday.

More than 70 stalls participated in the event, including handmade crafts and food items, plus children’s games and other attractions from the Medieval period. Thousands of locals and visitors alike, were assailed by aromatic herbs, perfumes and soaps. Clothing, leather goods, ceramics, silverware and wooden toys offered tactile alternatives for unique gifts. Visitors could sample meats, sausages, custards, cheese, liqueurs and Arabian dumplings.

Decorations and knights added a profusion of colour, whilst musical performances and theatrical exhibitions in the form of plays, juggling, dance and storytelling, captured the spirit of the

Mayor of Culture, Maris Mingot, said, “The Medieval Market is a recreational, cultural and gastronomic experience, that ensures all audiences enjoy the opportunity.”

The town council of La Villajoyosa celebrated their 725th anniversary as a town, with festivities, continuing until Saturday May 10. They included an awards cere-

mony of a sword ‘Espasa Joiosa’ from the Berbat de Sarria, during which Mayor Marcos Zaragoza named Miguel Lloret Perez a knight, who now holds the post of Admiral for King James ll Bernat de Sarria.

Activities end, with a civic procession and a re-enactment of the act of proclamation of the Town Charter in the church of Mare de Deu de l’assumpcio.

There is a nature reserve on Benidorm Island, just a short ferry ride away.

THERE is a popularly held view that Benidorm is just a cheap holiday place, where there is little to visit but bars and pubs.

If you take a look at the town on a deeper level, avoid the main tourism spots and the nightclub hubbub, there are some truly incredible views to take in.

After all, the town is celebrating its 700th anniversary in 2025; somewhere with that much history cannot just be summed up as a party haven or a cheap tourist destination.

Explore its hidden depths or heights with us and let us see if we can view Benidorm through a different lens.

Starting outside of the town looking in, there is the nature reserve on Benidorm Island, just a short ferry ride from the Levante Beach you can reach the highest point on the tiny island in just 15 to 20 minutes and get the most spectacular view of the entire coast.

If you are looking for a manmade view of Benidorm, the Grand Hotel Bali’s glass lift, observation deck and Sky Bar are a must-visit. You do not have to be a guest to take in one of the most spectacular views of the town’s skyline.

There is also the Benidorm Cross, a viewpoint at the top of the Sierra Helada Natural Park with its unforgettable views across Benidorm.

A History of European Day EUROPE DAY is a celebration of peace and unity in Europe. It is held on May 9 each year, in recognition of the anniversary of the 1950 ‘Shuman declaration’, which was proposed by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman. It is thought to be the birth, of

what we know as the European Union.

Europe Day holds a special significance this year, as 2025 is the 75th year since Schuman’s declaration.

Traditionally, celebrations are similar across Europe.

Strengthening ties

CALPE will celebrate European Day alongside other parts of the Costa Blanca North on Friday, May 9.

They intend to create a day of activities that value the cultural diversity of the local area and reinforce the feeling of belonging to the European Union. The event will begin at 11am with the hoisting of the European Flag in Plaza Colon.

Then at noon a manifesto will be read out in several languages that recalls and advocates for the fundamental beliefs of the European Union.

Democracy, freedom and respect for human rights will take centre stage in various languages so that as many people as possible can understand the manifesto in their own European language.

Finally, at 1pm in the Calalga car park a giant Paella will be served to the public.

The Calpe Town Hall is hoping for a huge turn out with many participants to foster and strengthen ties between the different nationalities that coexist in Calpe.

There are many towns taking part like Calpe, as part of the BELC programme (Building Europe with Local Authorities) which aims to bring European policy to the public and promotes involvement by citizens.

The town held a similar event in 2024 which was appreciated by the local population and a success at bringing together a cosmopolitan group of Europeans who all live in the Calpe area.

Libraries and museums, often release new exhibitions for European Day. Culture is explored through paintings, photographs, sculpture, clothing, furnishings and music. Technology and multilingual digital platforms, offer additional insights into socio-economic values and trends.

Stay safe in the water WITH summer fast approaching, the Costa Blanca’s beaches become hubs. Safety-wise, there are normal considerations to think about, from sun exposure to high tide. In light of recent drownings at the coast and with the majority of deaths by drowning in Spain occurring at the beach, more awareness needs to be raised.

According to the Spanish Federation of Lifeguards, RFESS, 43 beach-based drownings and six coastal deaths have occurred since the beginning of the year in Spain.

There are easy steps to keep yourself and your family safe at the beach this summer.

Firstly, if you are not accustomed to the area, find and visit blue flag beaches. It is a simple Google search that ensures that you are on a beach with lifeguards/or lifesaving equipment already on hand and that there are safety measures in place at the beach to protect its users.

Second, learn the emergency service number for Spain, 112, by calling this number you can contact any of the local emergency services including the coastguard.

Recent studies have shown that facing culture shock and overcoming challenges makes for a more resilient expat, less

likely to fall into homesickness and more able to adapt to unfamiliar work environments in their new country.

The best way to do this is through immersion in both native and expatriate cultures.

What’s legal in Benidorm?

IF you’re heading to Benidorm this summer, you may come across viral warnings from British TikToker Frank the Stagman. In one of his popular videos, Frank

claims you can be fined for drinking, smoking, vaping or buying cocktails on the beach.

But how much truth is there in all this?

We’ve cross-checked his claims with local municipal by-laws and regional legislation to clarify what really is allowed on Benidorm’s beaches.

Here’s a practical guide to what you can and can’t do, according to official sources.

• Drinking alcohol on the beach: Frank says

it’s banned, but that’s not entirely accurate.

What carries a €300 fine is unauthorised street vending, not private consumption.

However, if you buy from illegal vendors, you can still be fined for encouraging an unauthorised activity.

• Smoking and vaping: Unlike other beaches in the Marina Baixa region, Benidorm hasn’t fully banned smoking.

It’s only restricted in three accessible areas (two on Poniente Beach and one on Levante).

• Being on the beach at night: Despite rumours, there’s no blanket ban on staying at the beach between midnight and 7am.

What is punishable (with a €751 fine) is obstructing cleaning services if you’re asked to move and refuse.

• Playing ball games or paddle games: This is allowed as long as you don’t disturb other beachgoers. It only becomes an offence (carrying a €120 fine) if it interferes with others’ enjoyment.

Bringing the community together.

BRUISED BUT NOT BROKEN, the El Campello-based charity, held a successful 10k Walk for Life on Saturday, May 3.

The charity helps people suffering from cancer and supports their families in every possible way, going above and beyond to make sure that there is a system of help for every nationality affected by the disease in the local area.

On Saturday, volunteers from the charity and its supporters completed as much of the sponsored 10k Walk for Life as they could, some walking the entire 10k and others taking a shorter route.

The idea was not to just finish the race but to show up and do as much or as little as they could. Lorraine Massie, who

runs the charity said “We have walkers who have had cancer and want to raise awareness and give something back and we have had walkers who have completed the walk for a loved one…it brings the community together” and the Walk for Life has done that same job every year for the last 22 years.

The sponsored walk was a huge success, with supporters of the charity raising more than €2,400 toward help for cancer patients and their families in the area and many people turning out to show their support.

Questions and Answers about tourist rentals in the Comunidad Valenciana. Everything you need to know.

IN recent months, our office has been receiving dozens of inquiries about tourist rentals. It’s no surprise. Since August 2024, there have been a series of regulatory and jurisprudential changes that have completely transformed the landscape. Marking a before and after in the legal treatment of these types of rentals. In this week’s article, we address the most pressing issues in a question-and-answer format.

What is considered a tourist rental in the Comunidad Valenciana?.

Decree 9/2024, passed last August, redefines tourist rentals.

Now, only those with a duration of 10 days or fewer, counted continuously for the same tenant, are considered as tourist rentals. Properties rented for 11 days or more cannot be considered tourist rentals (Art. 65, Law

15/2018).

Do I need a tourist licence if I rent for more than 11 days?

If you rent your property for 11 days or more to the same tenant, your rental will not be subject to the tourist rental regulations, and you will not need a Tourist Licence, etc. However, you will still need to obtain a Rental Registration Number.

Are Rental Registration Numbers required for tourist rentals too?

Yes. The Rental Registration Number is mandatory for both seasonal rentals and tourist rentals.

What happens if I don’t get a Rental Registration Number?

Starting July 1, 2025, online short-term rental platforms will remove any listings that do not have a Rental Registration Number. If you need to obtain this re-

gistration number, our office can assist you.

What do I need to get a Rental Registration Number?

You must have a digital certificate issued by an authorised organisation to issue digital certificates in Spain. In the Valencian Community, it is generally possible to obtain the digital certificate from local town halls, collaborating entities like SUMA, etc.

What role do Homeowners’ Associations now play regarding tourist rentals?

Until now, communities could prohibit these rentals through an agreement of 3/5 of votes and shares. Now, in addition to being able to prohibit them, new rentals that are processed must obtain explicit authorisation from their homeowners’ association.

Can the Land Registry deny me the Rental Registration

Number for my property?

Yes. If you have a tourist property, and there is a prohibitive agreement regarding such rentals in your community, the Land Registry will deny your request.

Likewise, if you do not provide the certificate from the homeowners’ association confirming that they expressly authorise the activity, it could also be denied.

Can I advertise my seasonal rental, of 11 days or more, on platforms like Booking.com, Airbnb, etc?

The current wording of the Valencian regulation leaves room for interpretation. Although there is minor case law stating that these platforms are not exclusively for tourist rentals and cover all types of rentals. This is a somewhat ambiguous and grey area. Therefore, before advertising your property on an online

platform, it is essential to analyse your case in detail and seek expert legal advice to avoid any issues.

Conclusions Recent legislative changes, many of them uncoordinated, have created significant confusion and grey areas regarding tourist rentals. THE DUTCH CLUB or Club Los Holandeses de L’Alfas celebrated their King’s Day with a traditional Vrijmarkt or free market.

The free market is akin to a flea market where people have the opportunity to sell their second-hand goods in parks and the streets of their towns for one day of the year, whilst they celebrate their King’s Birthday.

During that day, stalls can be set up without permits and whole areas are organised for children and adults to host their stalls. In L’Alfas, the Club Los Holandeses held a traditional and lively version of a free market, opening its doors to the general public and offering them the opportunity to buy from a wide range of products. King’s Day also gave people a chance to better understand

what the association does.

The councillor in charge of the International Department of L’Alfas Town Council, Martine Mertens, together with other councillors, visited the market and took an interest in the stalls and the activities of a club which has around 400 members. The club is comprised primarily of Dutch members, but there are also Flemish-speaking Belgians. Club Los Holandeses was established more than 50 years ago. The club has always worked towards helping its community to integrate and they have done it very successfully.

They have also always been willing to participate in activities promoted by the town hall.

A NEW hiking book has been released and is available to buy across the Costa Blanca called Costa Blanca 52.

It features 52 hiking routes from the Costa Blanca across 52 chapters and costs €30. Written by Kendra Hoover Noddeland, it covers a year of the best hikes in the Costa Blanca, she is encouraging people to enjoy the healthy activity of hiking through nature, explore the Costa Blanca and buy the book locally.

The book challenges its readers to attempt one hike a week for 52 weeks, similar to the online challenge called the 52 Hike Challenge

that began in the USA. She recommends starting any of the year and carrying a journal to note your experiences whilst on the trail.

Kendra started her own journey through helping walking groups and has developed Costa Blanca 52 to answer all those hiking questions other non-native adventurers have too.

The most recent group enjoy a well-deserved break.

JAVEA-based NGO Cultura Contra Balas (Culture Against Bullets) worked with the EUWMA to complete its 13th successful psychological recovery programme. The charity aims to strengthen cultural ties between countries affected by conflict and Spain as a tool against human violence.

The group offers wellness breaks to people from Ukraine and has successfully hosted about 30 groups. Their most recent intake, a group of 36 women psychologists and 36 women teachers.

The EUWMA, European Union of Women Marina Alta, collaborated with Cultura Contra Balas to create a lunch for the group and told them about the European Union of Women and how they might find a collective voice in Europe and the United Nations.

The EUWMA is assisting the women to create a group withing the EUW, to get together and work on issues that affect women.

The EUWMA said, “As you can imagine, it was an emotional experience. The

issues we highlight for women here in the Marina Alta - like domestic violence - are profoundly different from those faced by women in Ukraine, where, for example, the focus might be on improving teaching conditions for children in bomb shelters. It’s unimaginable.”

They have asked for more volunteers to reach out to Natasha at Culture against bullets via the email address culturacontrabalas@gmail. com to find out how they can make a real difference in people’s lives.

Where to see the Eta Aquarids? glimpse of the out-of-this-world phenomenon.

First, Taberna, the little inland Costa Blanca North town, has garnered a reputation for its window to the cosmos. Due to its lack of light pollution, it has multiple natural sites that are ideal for watching this month’s meteor shower, among them the Collaret de Sa Vinya viewpoint, where information can be found to help would-be stargazers pinpoint where to look in the night sky.

Second is Tabarca Island, with its clear skies and next to no light pollution, this island just off the coast in the Costa Blanca South, is part of the Starlight Foundation the best places for astro tourism in the world.

SPRING in Spain heralds the arrival of the Eta Aquarids meteor shower and there are some spectacular local places to take binoculars and watch meteors light up the night sky.

Although the annual showers’ peak time, May 6, has passed, there is still time to catch the galactic show before May 27, when the space debris disappears from our night sky for another year.

NASA says that the Eta Aquarids produce anywhere up to 50 meteors an hour at the beginning of May and they originate from the space debris of Halley’s Comet. Luckily, the Costa Blanca, with its cloud-free skies, is the perfect place to stargaze.

TOO GOOD TO GO, the world’s leading app against food waste, says 38 per cent of Portuguese people may be throwing away food that’s still good to eat. The main reason? Confusion over expiry dates.

Every year, 184 kilos of food per person are wasted in Portugal. Around 18 kilos of that is due to misunderstanding date labels.

There are two types: ‘Use by’ is for safety - eat it before this date.

‘Best before’ is about quality. Food can often be eaten after this date if it looks, smells and tastes fine.

Too Good To Go launched its ‘Look, Smell, Taste’ campaign to teach people to trust their senses.

The label is now on 720+ products from major brands like Bimbo, Kellogg’s, Continente and more.

However, only 38 per cent know about it, and nearly half admit they don’t use their senses.

The issue is worse among young people. Compared to older consumers, one in three aged 18–34 struggle to interpret labels.

The Too Good To Go app is also helping. For just €2.99, users can grab a Surprise Bag from local shops and restaurants. Since 2019, more than 5.8 million bags have been saved, preventing 15,500 tonnes of CO2.

Less waste means lower costs, less pollution, and more food on the table.

INDITEX, the Spanish retail giant owned by billionaire Amancio Ortega, is constructing the world’s largest Zara store in Antwerp, Belgium.

The three-storey, 14,000-square-metre store, is set to open in late 2026 and will occupy the site of the former Proximus building, with Zara on the ground floor and Karel De Grote Hogeschool’s campus above.

Costing €24 million annually in rent, the project is among Belgium’s most expensive retail deals, according to developers Tans Urban Landmarks and Urbicoon. Nicolas Beausillon, CEO of Tans, stressed that Zara’s aim to create unique shopping experiences to rival online retail, boosting Antwerp’s status as a fashion hub.

Meanwhile, Ortega is competing with Elon Musk for a strategic plot in Valencia, Spain, at Cheste’s industrial park, La Ceja-Cañada Arena, with rail links to Madrid and Valencia. Musk plans a €5 billion Tesla gigafactory for electric car batteries, promising thousands of jobs and reinforcing Tesla’s European dominance.

While, Ortega intends to build two distribution centres for Inditex brands like Zara, Pull&Bear, and Bershka, also promising mass employment.

The tussle between two of the richest men in the world - Ortega ($125 billion net worth) and Musk ($389.4 billion) - show their ambitious visions for expansion in Spain.

PORTUGAL’S population is shifting, with new figures showing that one in three babies born in 2024 had a foreign mother. According to the country’s National Statistics Institute (INE), 84,642 babies were born last year, a 1.2 per cent drop compared to 2023. But 33 per cent of those births were to foreign-born mothers, up from 29.2 per cent the previous year.

This rise highlights the growing role of foreign families in keeping Portugal’s birth rate afloat. Areas like Greater Lisbon (47.8 per cent), the Setúbal Peninsula (46.9 per cent), and the Algarve (46.6 per cent)

are leading the trend, reflecting Portugal’s appeal to international residents, from Brazilian and Eastern European families to digital nomads and American expats.

The reasons are clear:

quality of life, safety, warm weather, and healthcare.

Many now choose to raise their children in Portugal, adding to the country’s multicultural fabric.

Still, Portugal’s overall population continues to

shrink. The INE recorded 118,374 deaths in 2024, nearly 34,000 more than the number of births. Most deaths were among those aged 65 and over, especially the over-80s.

Motherhood trends are also shifting. Only 1.8 per cent of births were to teenage mothers, while 32 per cent were to women aged 35 and over. The average age for first-time mothers is now 30.7 years.

Despite the population decline, the rising number of births to foreign mothers may help ease the trend, shaping a more diverse Portugal, one family at a time.

TOURISTS planning summer trips to Spain may struggle to find accommodation as the government tightens rules on holiday rentals. New laws, effective April 2025, allow residential communities to block short-term lets if 60 per cent of a building’s owners agree, citing noise or disruption concerns. The government is also pushing for heavy fines on platforms like Airbnb for listing unlicensed properties. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has urged local officials in high-demand areas like Malaga and Barcelona to limit tourist rentals.

The measures address soaring house prices and rents, which have doubled in some tourist regions in under a decade.

Malaga halted new rental licences for three years, and Barcelona plans to end all 10,000 licences by 2028.

Illegal rentals continue, with Madrid hosting 15,300 unlicensed units. The Consumer Affairs Ministry is pursuing multimillion-euro fines against platforms. Airbnb argues it’s unfairly targeted, warning of a €30 billion tourism revenue risk.

Ryanair decision hits Billund hard RYANAIR’S decision to shut down its base at Billund Airport on April 1 has sharply dropped passenger numbers and job losses. Just over 217,000 passengers travelled through the airport in April, almost 100,000 fewer than last year. That’s a 31.4 per cent decline, according to new airport figures.

Ryanair had offered 24 routes from Billund and carried thousands each month. However, the airline pulled out after a new Danish passenger tax was added up to 50 kroner per ticket, and a new deal with the airport could not be reached.

Since the airline’s exit, the airport has laid off 22 employees and cancelled plans to hire 100 seasonal workers for summer.

Airport CEO Jan Hessellund called the cuts ‘necessary’ due to lower traffic. However, excluding Ryanair, passenger numbers have risen 4.5 per cent this year. Other airlines have stepped in to fill the gap.

British Airways increased flights to London, Wizz Air added new routes to Eastern Europe, and Air Greenland now flies to Nuuk. SAS also resumed daily flights to Copenhagen.

Still, Ryanair’s departure leaves a significant gap, especially for budget-conscious travellers in Jutland.

Airport officials remain hopeful that new low-cost carriers will see an opportunity where Ryanair left off.

Finland’s fast-lane student visa push FINNISH embassies in New Delhi, Kathmandu and Abu Dhabi are prioritising student residence permit applications in June and July to manage a sharp rise in demand, particularly from India.

The move aims to ensure students can arrive in time for autumn 2025 studies, as application volumes risk overwhelming embassy systems.

Student applications are now being fast-tracked - but there’s a catch.

Family members may face delays, as embassies focus on processing student permits first.

“Prioritising students means that their family members may be unable to identify themselves while the main candidate is applying,” officials confirmed.

New Delhi is seeing the highest volume, with over 2,645 Indian students already in Finland and around 22,000 people in the broader Indian community.

With Finland actively courting talent from the subcontinent, those numbers are expected to grow.

To study in Finland for more than 90 days, applicants must hold a first residence permit and it must be secured from abroad.

Requirements include admission to a degree or vocational course, an application via the Enter Finland online service, and in-person identification at an embassy.

As of April 29, 2025, 2,099 student permits

had been granted, with 1,247 still pending.

About 75 per cent of applicants receive a decision within 30 days.

A Ryanair aircraft preparing for takeoff as the airline introduces a new €120 fine for late passengers.

MISSING your Ryanair flight will now be a lot more expensive. Starting from May 1, 2025, the airline will impose a €120 fee on late passengers who want to rebook onto the next available service.

The move, Ryanair says, is all about maintaining its punctuality record - and sending a strong message about respecting boarding times. Whether it’s a domestic or international flight, a promo ticket or a regular fare, the rule applies across the board, with no exceptions. CEO Michael O’Leary made it clear: “If you’re not at the gate on time, you’re delaying everyone else.” Ryanair already closes its gates 20 minutes before departure, but insiders say last-minute arrivals have surged in the past year, causing disruptions.

The €120 charge is designed to offset the real costs of rebooking and missed take-off slots. While some travellers support the idea - arguing that punctuality should be respected - others criticise the fee as unfair, pointing out that security delays or airport chaos are often beyond passengers’ control.

Travel groups warn that families, elderly travellers and those unfamiliar with airports could be hardest hit. Despite the backlash, Ryanair is unlikely to soften its stance. Known for its tough policies and nofrills approach, the airline clearly believes strict rules are the best way to keep flights running on time. So if you’re flying Ryanair soon, make sure you don’t miss your boarding call - or be ready to pay up.

AN earthenware dish designed and signed by Pablo Picasso in 1953, depicting a bullfight, was found at a second-hand shop in Antwerp, a local news outlet reported.

“It’s a beautiful work.

It required knowledge and training to spot it, though,” Davy van Basteleare, the Kringwinkel Antwerpen’s auction manager, told VRT News.

The dish is in excellent condition, according to Kringwinkel’s Head of Sales and Marketing, Lander Janssens. It is white earthenware with brown-green decoration in engobe (clay or clay powder), enamel, and oxidised paraffin. On the back of the dish are two stamps: ‘Madoura Plein Feu’ and ‘Empreinte Originale de Picasso’.

“We have, of course, made further checks, as of course anyone could put a stamp. But it turned out to be an original.

It’s a relief design featuring a bullfight that was designed in 1953,” he added.

The Picasso-signed dish is part of a collection of 200 that were produced by the Madoura ceramics workshop in Vallauris, France.

The dish has since been auctioned off for €12,600 to a person identified as Johan, who said he is happy with his purchase.

The proceeds of the sale typically go toward helping people.

OVER recent weeks, Spanish media have been flooded with speculation that Chinese nationals are closing their stores and leaving Spain.

The official data tells a different story. According to Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE), the Chinese population in Spain actually increased in 2024, by over 6,000 people. So, far from departing, the Chinese community is staying here.

Still, why the sudden closing of so many traditional Chinese stores? The answer is not in departure, but transformation.

Chinese entrepreneurs are adapting to Spain’s shifting consumer habits. Spanish consumers are now focused on services, sustainability, and quality.

Online giants like Amazon, Temu, and Alibaba have changed the game. Those classic

physical stores are now feeling the pressure.

Instead of leaving Spain, Chinese business owners are reinventing themselves. Many former bazaar owners are now opening other businesses in Spain. Beauty salons, fashion boutiques, high-end sushi restaurants, even tapas bars. They are also investing money in tech stores, travel agencies, or even professional services such as language schools or legal consultancies.

This shift is part of what experts call Spain’s ‘service economy revolution’. And the Chinese entrepreneurs are leading the way.

“Rather than sticking with the same formula, they’ve successfully redirected their efforts into the services sector,” said Eduardo Abad, president of UPTA (the Union of Professionals and Self-Employed Workers).

IRELAND’S largest dairy company, Tirlán, has pleaded guilty to ‘grossly polluting’ a tributary of the Knappagh River in Co Monaghan.

In November 2023, there was an incident at Tirlán’s dairy processing facility. The company avoided a conviction but agreed to a €5,000 charity donation and more than €15,000 in legal costs.

The court was told that ‘high levels of grossly polluting matter’ had flowed from Tirlán’s facility into a tributary of the Knappagh River on November 24, 2023, according to The Irish Independent.

According to Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI), the Knappagh River is a tributary of the River Erne - ‘one of the country’s most significant trout and salmon rivers’, and a key ‘spawning and nursery habitat’ for brown trout.

DIRTY DUSTING is a new Careline Theatre production coming this May. The show will be on at the Benidoleig Auditorium on May 9, 10, and 11 at 8pm and may well be the funniest production of the year in the Costa Blanca.

Do you think Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office were successful?

DONALD TRUMP’S return to the presidency has been nothing short of eventful. In just 100 days, he has signed a flurry of executive orders and made headlines across the globe. Despite the whirlwind of activity, his approval rating has plummeted to the lowest of any US president at this stage in the last 80 years.

From day one, Trump launched an aggressive agenda - reinstating strict border controls, resulting in a reported 90 per cent drop in illegal crossings, though not without backlash from human rights advocates. Controversy followed him elsewhere too: his executive orders rolling back protections for gender identity, and pulling the US out of the WHO and the Paris Agreement have drawn criticism.

His tariff moves shook global markets, allies are rethinking their ties, and European leaders are reinforcing their defences.

It’s early yet - but if these 100 days are a sign, this term will be as divisive as the last. So, we asked our readers: Do you think President Trump’s first 100 days in office were successful?

Supporters pointed to Trump’s adherence to campaign promises. Jenny Church remarked, “Yes. Look at the border. No illegals are arriving any more.

He’s planning to make America self-sufficient.” Geoffrey Wilson echoed this, “Yes. Trump has done what he said he would do.”

Mike Muttley Mowforth added a nuanced view, commenting, “You only hear the stories and results the media want you to know. [...]

He’s doing what he said he would (right or wrong) which is rare in politics.”

Not all responses were positive.

Bill Shearer provided a critical view: “If driving the US economy into the ground, then yes he is a success, otherwise he is a massive failure.” Valeria Olivares Piñeiro took a more global perspective, “It’s easy to clap from your home in a free country.”

Other responses were more ambivalent. Sheree Ruiz suggested context is key: “That would depend on what he hopes or plans to achieve and maybe if you are American or not.” Angela Edgley stated, “No. He may be ‘good’ for the USA but not for the rest of the world.” Finally, Maggie Hannan noted the question’s subjectivity: “I guess it is about what you want.”

Overall, the responses highlighted a sharp divide between those who view Trump as a determined leader, and those who see his actions as reckless or harmful.

FINANCE THE UK leads Europe in corporate-startup collaboration, especially in AI, with 81 per cent of British firms seeing startups as key to their AI strategies. Partnerships succeed more in the UK than elsewhere, according to the 2025 Open Innovation Report by Sopra Steria Next and Insead.

THE EU Court ruled Malta’s golden passport scheme illegal, stating citizenship can’t be sold. It breaches EU law by treating nationality as a commercial transaction.

LINEA DIRECTA Insurers reported a net profit of €20.8 million in the first quarter of 2025, more than doubling last year’s result with a 106.1 per cent increase. This strong performance was fuelled by faster revenue growth, a rising number of customers, and better insurance margins.

Coke confidence

COCA-COLA beat first-quarter earnings expectations and said tariffs will likely be ‘manageable’. Despite a 25 per cent aluminium tariff affecting beverage makers, Coke remains optimistic, unlike PepsiCo, which cut its earnings outlook. CFO John Murphy noted tariffs could affect costs and consumer sentiment.

Helping hand

THE Bank of Spain’s Executive Committee has approved the granting of 150 grants of €1,000 to students from the areas affected by the DANA disaster on October 29 in Valencia. The grants are distributed equally between vocational training and university degree students registered in the affected municipalities.

Productive paradox

SPAIN’S unemployment has risen to its highest level in a year, reaching 11.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2025, yet workplace productivity and economic growth remain solid.

Despite the jobless rate exceeding expectations and climbing from 10.6 per cent in the previous quarter, new research shows Spain leading Europe in workplace productivity.

A study by Opinion Matters for Ricoh Europe, based on responses from 1,800 business decision-makers and 7,000 workers across Europe, found that 92 per cent of Spanish employees consider themselves productive, higher than any other country in the survey.

Spain’s unproductivity rate stands at just 4 per cent, compared with 9 per cent in the UK and Ireland. Italy ranked second in productivity, followed by the Netherlands, France, Germany, the UK and Ireland.

The report also revealed widesREPSOL and Telefónica are teaming up to expand their partnership and compete with major players like Iberdrola, Endesa, Naturgy, Netflix, and Max. They’ve launched a joint offer combining energy supply with premium entertainment from Movistar Plus.

Green gateway INDIA’S Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal’s recent visit to the Netherlands has paved the way for establishing a green and digital trade corridor between Indian ports and the Port of Rotterdam, aimed at supporting green hydrogen exports to Europe.

Visa standoff

THE ongoing visa dispute between Turkey and the European Union (EU) has escalated. Some Turkish business leaders have condemned the new EU visa requirements as an ‘economic embargo and not a security measure’ and a breach of international trade law.

Under the latest rules, EU countries are demanding that Turkish companies provide full three-month bank transaction records when applying for employee Schengen visas.

This goes beyond personal payslips and bank statements, requiring detailed financial data from the businesses themselves.

Many in Turkey’s business community argue this added burden is both unfair and damaging to trade and international cooperation.

Strong surge DESPITE recent geopolitical uncertainty, European airline group Lufthansa continues to see strong demand for flights.

The group, which includes Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Swiss, and ITA Airways, reported a 10 per cent year-on-year rise in revenue to €8.1 billion for the first quarter of 2025.

Lufthansa also noted an increase in passenger numbers and higher average fares on its transatlantic routes compared to the same period in 2024.

Fear factor MORE Cypriots now see the island as a good place to start a business, but fear of failure continues to stop many from taking the leap, according to the latest National Report on Entrepreneurship in Cyprus by the University of Cyprus.

Some 60.5 per cent of respondents say they have the skills to start a business, which is well above the European average.

Despite this, 53.3 per cent admit it is the fear of failure that is stopping them.

Netflix knockout NETFLIX exceeded analysts’ expectations with its first-quarter earnings in 2025. The streaming service attributed its strong performance to ‘membership growth and higher pricing’, along with ‘the timing of expenses,’ which helped increase profitability.

Earlier this year, Netflix raised prices for most of its subscription plans in the US, Canada, Portugal, parts of Europe and Argen-

tina. These price increases played a key role in boosting profitability, with the company’s operating margin rising to 31.7 per cent, up nearly four percentage points from the same quarter last year.

However, Netflix noted that revenue from advertising still remains a small part of its overall income, with subscription fees continuing to be the main revenue driver.

In Seoul, Hyundai launched a similar system in an office building.

Their robots move cars during work hours and even have autonomous chargers that drive up and charge electric vehicles.

In China, robots are used to move illegally parked cars, although human officers still issue the fines.

Argentina is getting in on the trend, too. The company Stradot has created a robotic valet system, though it’s larger and more focused on use by car manufacturers and logistics companies rather than public or private car parks.

No matter what the size or style, one thing is clear: more and more, we’ll be trusting robots, guided by artificial intelligence, to take care of our cars.

Keeping an open mind Italian Brainrot LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT CONSPIRACY theorists are everywhere, I have over the years, researched and investigated large numbers of these theories; from Queen Elizabeth I being a man, Area 51, the assassination of Kennedy, the death of Princess Diana and the Twin Tower attack etc.

One thing I endeavoured to do is to always retain an open mind. This can give you a clear advantage over these theorists - it is the one asset they most definitely do not possess! Once a CT has its teeth into something, irrespective of any proof to the contrary, they are virtually impossible to shake off.

With this in mind I thought I would delve a little further into the psyche of the compulsive theorists and what makes them actually tick. According to one school of psychiatry the paranoia that drives individuals to constantly scan the world for dangers and imagines the worst from others, is a throwback to Neanderthal times. To mitigate threats from other tribes,

these ancient humans needed to be suspicious of everything and everyone, merely to survive.

The doctors also reached the conclusion that many theorists were people who retained manipulative unusual patterns of thought, practised Machiavellianism, were insecure, lonely or stressed, which made them more inclined to believe in conspiracy’s and the supernatural.

These suspicious people are of course not always in the wrong. Although some of their theories, ie that the earth is flat or the Moon landing didn’t take place - are laughable; there have been a number of instances where they were proven to be correct. That the FBI was spying on John Lennon (True). Project Sunshine, where the US government was accused of stealing dead bodies to test for radiation after a nuclear explosion. (True). That as far back as 1950 tobacco companies were fully aware smoking was lethal and could cause cancer. (True). That you can be spied on through your laptop camera. (True – and worrying!)

On the other hand some of their theories can be highly dangerous.

Those who believed the Covid pandemic didn’t exist could, if they were in charge, have been responsible for the deaths of millions.

In 2016 the personal mail of John, Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager was hacked. He was found to have ordered large numbers of pizzas. The conspiracy theorists decided that these orders were a code for a child sex ring run by the members of the diplomatic party. The shop who supplied the pizzas was subsequently attacked by a man with a semi-automatic rifle!

It was a miracle no one was killed. It ultimately transpired that Podesta really liked pizzas!

All I can say to the conspiracy theorists is keep believing what your heart and mind tells you. But please don’t patronise and pour scorn on others who hold a different point of view.

What about turning your efforts to the biggest conspiracy theory of all; that we are merely figments of our own imagination?

IT’S not just the Americans who have a problem with the popular Chinese owned app, TikTok, as the Irish Data Protection Authority has just fined the company €530 million.

After exhaustive investigations, it has concluded that the company has breached privacy rules after allegedly transferring European users’ personal data to China in breach of European Union rules.

TikTok has announced that it will appeal the decision and does not believe that it has committed any breach of the rules and has warned that if it is unsuccessful then this could have ‘far reaching implications for other companies’.

According to a statement from the Data Protection Commission (DPC): ‘TikTok’s personal data transfers to China infringed the GDPR because TikTok failed to verify, guarantee and demonstrate that the personal data of EEA (European Economic Area) users, remotely accessed by staff in China, was afforded a level of protection essentially equivalent to that guaranteed within the EU.’ The immediate response from the owner of TikTok, ByteDance was that it had acted in accordance with ‘Project Clover’, which was introduced in 2023 to protect Eu-

Fee for cheap imports Historically low levels FRANCE plans to introduce a handling fee on low-cost parcels from non-EU countries, targeting the surge of cheap imports from Chinese e-commerce giants like Shein and Temu. The proposed fee - ‘a few euros’ per package - aims to help offset rising customs inspection costs amid a flood of budget goods entering Europe. French officials hope to implement the measure by 2026, or sooner if they secure support from other EU nations.

Cinco de Mayo is a big deal in the US, especially for those living near the border of California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Because these states used to belong to Mexico, the mix of Mexican culture is alive. It’s a chance to celebrate that blend of traditions, food, colour, music, and joy!

But here’s the thing: why do we make such a big deal about Cinco de Mayo in the US? In Mexico, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla, which took place on May 5, 1862, when the Mexican army defeated the French forces. It’s a powerful symbol of Mexican pride and resilience - and honestly, I’d like to imagine that at that moment, the Mexicans looked the French right in the eye and said: “Don’t you dare treat us like free salsa. We are guacamole, baby. Guacamole!”

Now, just to set the record straight Cinco de Mayo isn’t Mexico’s Independence Day (that’s on September 16). But it still holds a special place in Mexican history. In the US, especially in border states, Cinco de Mayo has taken on a life of its own. It’s a celebration of everything Mexican vibrant culture, rich history, and, of course, the food! (And let’s not forget the big Cinco de Mayo sales because nothing screams ‘Viva México’ like 30 per cent off patio furniture, right?)

And speaking of food, I still remem-

ber the smell of BBQ floating out from every backyard, parks packed with people grilling carne asada, laughter filling the air, and of course... Guacamole, baby!

Now, let’s talk guacamole. What’s the true star of Cinco de Mayo?

Not the salsa (even though it’s good too), but GUACAMOLE fresh, creamy, zesty, and absolutely irresistible.

Made with ripe avocados, onions, lime, peppers, a bit of olive oil... it’s not just a dip it’s the main event. Salsa might be free, but guacamole? Guacamole is what everyone’s really after.

And here’s a fun twist: Did you know there was actually a war called ‘The War of the Pastries’?

In 1838, Mexico and France clashed over, get this, destroyed French pastries. What a sweet war that must have been. DANISH consumers are boycotting Coca-Cola according to Carlsberg CEO Jacob Aarup-Andersen.

Carlsberg’s CEO commented on the sales of Coca-Cola products in Denmark in a recent interview, stating that they are experiencing a decline while local brands gain volume share.

He attributed this decrease in sales to ‘some level of consumer boycott around US brands’.

When reached for comment, the US soft drink manufacturer did not reference the boycott in Denmark, but said it was seeing some negative consumer sentiment in Europe. Coca-Cola is a frequent target for boycotts as it serves as a proxy for the United States government, due to its status as a top selling US-product.

tensions between the two governments in relation to the United States’ threats of annexation of Greenland, an issue that has made an impact on Danish public opinion and damaged the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Two major culprits are pyrethroids, found in bug sprays and pet collars, and organophosphates, older insecticides still used in farming and pest control. Cypermethrin, for example, is used on crops and for tick treatments.

THE construction of an astonishing 18 km-long tunnel known as Fehmarnbelt, and at that, a prefabricated road and rail tunnel, is underway beneath the Baltic Sea, linking Denmark and Germany.

The €7.4bn project, mostly funded by Denmark with €1.3bn from the European Commission, hopes to cut travel times and better Scandinavia’s connectivity with central Europe. Spain’s wealthy BEING rich in Spain today isn’t as straightforward as it seems. It’s not just about earnings - lifestyle, spending and aspirations all matter.

According to L’Observatoire des Inégalités, in 2024, you need a gross monthly income of at least €3,673 to be officially considered wealthy in Spain. That’s nearly three times the minimum wage, currently €1,134 per month.

However, many earning that amount don’t feel rich, as rising living costs and growing family needs stretch finances. To enter Spain’s top 1 per cent, you would need a net worth of around €2.3 million.

Spain’s middle class in 2024 includes those earning between €1,343 and €3,581 monthly.

Above €3,581 is upper class, but true ‘wealth’ is marked at €3,673 or more.

Even with salaries increasing, comfort doesn’t always mean luxury, especially with the cost of living skyrocketing. Spaniards now spend about 47 per cent of their salary on rent, well above the 30 per cent experts recommend. In cities like Madrid or Barcelona, housing costs are even steeper. Family size also shapes perceptions of wealth. A couple with two young children would need around €7,713 gross per month to be considered rich.

In today’s Spain, true financial freedom remains out of reach for most.

UNITED AIRLINES has reopened its direct Malaga-New York flight, strengthening the route in its third year of operation.

The daily service, running until September 24, connects the Costa del Sol with New York-Newark.

Flights depart Newark at 5.50pm, arriving in Malaga at 7.35am the next day. The return flight leaves Malaga at 9.35am, landing in New York at 12.10pm.

This summer, United will offer 51,000 seats on a Boeing 757-200, with 176 seats: 16 in Polaris business class, 42 in Economy Plus with extra legroom, and 118 in standard economy. According to the airline, flight bookings have been sold out, particularly in business class and on both sides of the Atlantic.

US passengers, mostly tourists, use Malaga as a gateway to Andalucia, exploring not just the Costa del Sol but also Granada, Cordoba, Sevilla, and Cadiz for their dose of culture, cuisine, and art. Despite US tariff policies, there has been minimal impact on demand, according to the airline.

MORE than 350,000 people took part in the Santa Faz pilgrimage on Thursday, May 1, the largest turnout ever recorded. With clear skies and no major incidents, the day was calm and filled with community spirit across Alicante and neighbouring towns.

This year’s pilgrimage was particularly special, taking place during the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year, which occurs once every 25 years.

The mayor of Alicante confirmed that efforts to have the Santa Faz pilgrimage recognised as an Asset of Cultural Interest are nearing completion.

He hopes the official status will be in place by the 2026 event.

Locals and visitors alike enjoyed the celebration. Speaking to participant Sofía Martínez, she said: “The festival helps us celebrate our local community and traditions with the rest of Spain and the world.” Santa Faz is the second largest pilgrimage in Spain, after El Rocío.

AROUND 50 volunteers joined forces in Nerja for a beach cleanup organised under the Abrazos de Mar campaign. In one day, they managed to remove 103 kilogrammes of waste from the coastline, including plastic items, cigarette butts, wrappers, wet wipes, and even bulky debris.

People travelled from different parts of Malaga Province to take part, showing dedication to protecting the coastal environment.

Abrazos de Mar is an initiative led by long-distance swimmer Alberto Lorente, who is swimming around the Spanish coastline to raise awareness of marine pollution. Lorente, a professional bus driver and holder of four Guinness World Records, swims between 10 and 12 kilometres daily as part of the campaign.

On May 3, he swam between the Torrox Lighthouse and Nerja’s Balcon de Europa, approximately 12 kilometres. Enrique Herrero, also known as Quique Bolsitas, joins him on land. Herrero collects plastic and other waste during each stage.

AFTER the pandemic and inflation period, Almeria benefited from temporary fare reductions and free public transport. However, these measures will be replaced by a new pricing plan from July 1, marking the end of free travel and discounted rates.

The most significant change will be the introduction of a nationwide monthly travel pass for all Cercanías Renfe services, allowing unlimited travel across all networks.

The new monthly pass will cost €20, offering an affordable way to travel throughout Spain’s Cercanías network. Additionally, there will be discounts for young people aged 15 to 26, and free travel for children under 15.

In addition to the Cercanías pass, there will be discounts for medium-distance trains and state-run buses. Medium-distance train passengers will receive a 40 per cent discount, with a 50 per cent reduction for young travellers aged 15 to 26.

Bus fares will be discounted by 40 to 70 per cent, depending on the passenger’s age and ticket type.

THE Balearic Islands are once again poised to top Spain’s economic charts, with BBVA forecasting a 3.2 per cent growth in regional GDP for 2025, just ahead of the national average.

The region already clocked an impressive 3.5 per cent in 2024, outpacing Spain’s overall 3.2 per cent according to the National Statistics Institute.

The boom has been driven largely by the islands’ ever-thriving tourism industry and a boost in domestic demand.

Come 2026, the pace is expected to slow, with GDP increasing by only 1.6 per cent, dipping just below the national forecast of 1.8 per cent. Even so, the Balearics will have grown a full 15 percentage points above their pre-pandemic level from 2019.

According to Miguel Cardoso, BBVA’s chief economist for Spain and Portugal, employment has also surged, especially in hospitality, retail, and public services. Around 17,400 new jobs could be created over 2025 and 2026.

A NEW horror park called Horror Imperium is set to open in the Region of Murcia in 2026. It will cover 20,000 square metres and offer live shows, scary walk-throughs, and interactive games based on haunted houses.

The company behind the project, Start Play, specialises in escape rooms. They say this will not be a typical theme park with rollercoasters. Instead, there will be seven different horror experiences, with 150 actors who interact with visitors to make each visit feel personal and exciting.

For those who want an even scarier time, there will be options to get more involved in the story. The company says the goal is to mix fear with fun, so people leave with good memories as well as a few scares.

The park will mainly open during the Halloween season, from October to November, but other events like musicals and dance shows will take place during the rest of the year.

The company has now revealed the vRS range-topping Elroq just six months after the world premiere of the new Elroq range, which competes in the popular electric compact SUV segment. This latest member of the vRS family has two motors generating a total system output of 340 PS and is equipped with all-wheel drive. It comes with an electric range of more than 340 miles, specific vRS accessories and comprehensive standard equipment. It is also the fastest accelerating car in Škoda’s current model portfolio, sprinting from 0 to 100kph/62 mph in 5.4 seconds.

Week following its digital world premiere, it was showcased at the event in Italy last month, marking the first public appearance of the Škoda Elroq vRS. The electric motors - on the front axle and on the rear axle - develop a total output of 340 PS and support all-wheel drive.

mph in 5.4 seconds, with a top speed of 178 kph/111 mph mean the Elroq vRS is a veritable pocket rocket. The high-voltage battery

has a capacity of 84 kWh, enabling a stated maximum electric range of more than 547 km/340 miles on the WLTP cycle.

Black exterior details and exclusive alloy wheels and the extensive standard equipment includes cutting-edge LED Matrix beam headlights and LED rear lights with dynamic indicators. An electrically adjustable driver’s seat with massage function also comes as standard.

It is available for the front passenger as part of the optional Maxx Package.

Like all Elroq models, the vRS variant is characterised by the new high-gloss black face accommodating multiple sensors, including radar.

The LED Matrix beam headlights with their four-eye look is a hallmark of the Škoda SUV range. LED rear lights with dynamic indicators are also included as standard.

Pricing and specification will be announced later, with first deliveries expected in the summer.

DRIVERS in Spain will soon notice a small but important change on the roads: number plates are moving into the ‘N’ series. The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has confirmed that newly registered vehicles will soon display the letter ‘N’ in their sequence.

As of now, plates are ending in MZX, and within a few weeks, they will shift naturally to ‘N’. This change was expected by the end of April. Spain’s registration system, introduced in 2000, uses four numbers and three letters, skipping vowels and confusing letters like Ñ and Q. Glovebox warning SPAIN’S Guardia Civil has sounded the alarm over a seemingly harmless habit that could leave your home wide open to burglars - quite literally.

In a video published on their official TikTok channel, the Guardia Civil warned motorists not to stash their spare house keys in their car’s glovebox. It might seem like a convenient hiding spot while you go for a run or pop to the beach, or even while you’re away on holiday, but it could be a burglar’s golden ticket.

An officer featured in the clip explained: “Some drivers leave house keys inside their parked vehicle for several days when they go on holiday.”

It’s a double whammy for would-be thieves. Alongside those keys, drivers often keep insurance documents, receipts, or other paperwork that lists their home address - the perfect pairing for a clean, quiet break-in.

The officer continued: “There have been several cases where thieves got inside a vehicle and, through documents like insurance papers or repair invoices, found out the home address and used the house keys to get in.”
