RECOVERY follows heavy downpours in late October and early November, when a DANA weather system and several intense rainfall episodes halted a worrying decline. In October, Gorg Blau fell to just 22 per cent and Cúber to 31.74 per cent, prompting Palma City Council to issue warnings over water scarcity. Successive rains in October and November helped replenish reserves, but it was the particularly wet Christmas period that produced the most noticeable increase, especially at Gorg Blau. Cúber’s recovery has been more limited, remaining around a third of its capacity. In 2025, reservoirs were under pressure after two dry winters and a below-average spring, while 2024 ended with levels already below historical averages. Authorities urge caution, stressing that current levels, though improved, remain far from optimal, and water should be used responsibly.

AS the new year dawned on Wednesday January 1, 2026, hospitals across Spain welcomed the first newborns amid celebrations. In the Balearic Islands, Olivia Sánchez Salazar became the region’s earliest arrival. The healthy girl, weighing 2,580 grams, was born at 00.50 to Colombian parents at Hospital de Son Espases in Palma. Health authorities hailed her birth as a symbol of hope for 2026. Later that morning, at 05.53, Marwa Udari Checa arrived naturally at Hospital Can Misses in Ibiza, weighing 3,200 grams and marking the first birth in the Pitiusas Islands. At the exact same time, Liam Ismael Espínola Ortiz was born at Hospital de Manacor on Mallorca. These arrivals highlighted the archipelago’s diverse communities. Nationally, several babies entered the world precisely at midnight. Elena was born in Barbastro, Aragon; Coral Conde Cid, weighing 2.9 kilograms, in Ourense, Galicia; with Erik and María also arriving on the stroke of 12 in other regions. Hospitals reported a wave of New Year’s deliveries, offering joy amid Spain’s declining birth rates.
