DENIA Hospital has welcomed its first baby of 2026, marking a joyful start to the new year in the Marina Alta. Adam was born in the early hours of New Year’s Day, arriving at 2.38am on January 1 with a healthy weight of 3.3 kilos. The hospital confirmed that both mother and baby are in good health, sharing the news on its official channels as a symbol of hope and renewal. To mark the occasion, the family received a special visit from Juan Puig Larrosa, manager of the Denia Health Department, and Rosa Ferrándiz Llácer, Director of Primary Care Nursing. Accompanied by the medical team who attended the birth, they congratulated the mother and the baby’s grandmother and presented the family with a gift pack containing essential newborn care products. Adam was not the only baby welcomed across the Costa Blanca, as hospitals in cities such as Alicante, Elche and Torrevieja also celebrated their first births of the year during the opening hours of 2026.

The last time British tourists led occupancy was in 2017.
BRITISH tourists have reclaimed the top spot in Benidorm’s hotel occupancy for the first time since 2017. Data from the hotel association Hosbec shows that in 2025, UK visitors made up 42.5 per cent of overnight stays, surpassing Spanish guests, who accounted for 38.6 per cent. The last time British tourists led occupancy was in 2017, when they held 46 per cent of the market compared with 41 per cent for Spaniards. The shift is partly linked
to Brexit, which limits UK citizens to 90 days in Spain within a 180-day period, reducing interest in buying second homes. Between 2018 and 2024, British property purchases in the province fell nearly 30 per cent, according to the College of Notaries of Valencia. Nevertheless, UK visitors continue to prioritise holidays, favouring short-term hotel stays, which has driven the recent resurgence. Benidorm’s hotels achieved an average occupan-
cy of 82.2 per cent in 2025, despite an increase in available rooms to 43,800 across 130 establishments. Seasonal patterns remained strong, with spring and summer particularly busy, and November and December recording 78.9 and 63.7 per cent occupancy. Early bookings for January 2026 already cover 59.1 per cent of rooms, signalling sustained demand and a continued recovery for British tourism.
