BOARD BITES Cover photo:

In association with Veterans Day, we are showing a picture of the B-29 owned by the ŽŵŵĞŵŽƌĂƚŝǀĞ Air Force The CAF B-29, FIFI

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress, first flown in 1942, began active service in 1944. It was designed as a replacement for the older B17s and B-24s, having the longer range and greater bomb loads necessary for operations in the World War II Pacific theater. The B-29 was also used in the Korean War in the early 1950s and was a staple of the U.S. Air Force until the late 1950s. FIFI was acquired by the CAF in the early 1970s when a group of CAF members found her at the U.S. Navy Proving Ground at China Lake, California where she was being used as a missile target. The airplane was rescued and restored and flew for over thirty years until 2006 when the chief pilot made the decision to ground her pending a complete power plant re-fit. What followed was an extensive four year restoration that included replacing all four engines with new custom built hybrid engines. FIFI returned to the sky in 2010 and since that time has traveled coast to coast attracting large crowds at every tour stop. Based in Dallas, Texas both the American flag and the Texas flag are shown. Learn more about FIFI at www.cafB29B24.org.

RECREATION AND FITNESS

US Open

The US Open is the last Grand Slam Tennis Tournaments of the year. It is held at the USTA Billie Jean King Naonal Tennis Center, Flushing Meadow Corona Park in New York. The USTA has done a $600 million renovaon of the grounds and if you can stand the masses of people, it’s definitely worth a trip to see the facility with two enclosed stadiums. It was a first to have a “shot clock” used to speed up serving, but the super-hot condions were more than enough for players to deal with. This year players experienced intense, energy-sapping heat and humidity with an impact on results, primarily for the men matches that are under the best 3 out of five sets format. Of special note this year is that four of the eight players in the women quarter finals reside in South Florida, and the finals were between Naomi Osaka, formerly living in Pembroke Pines, and now living in Boca Raton and Serena Williams, a resident of Palm Beach Gardens. There was no lack of drama in the Women’s Final with Naomi Osaka (who spent me training at Brian Piccolo Park years ago) besng her idol Serena in straight sets. Novak Djokovic is back to a high level, showing incredible tenacity and speed on defense in besng Juan Marn del Potro in straight sets. It was sad to see Nadal go out with a knee injury aer winning monumental bales with Khachanov and Dominic Theim. The game is so physical now, injuries are more and more common, even with juniors, and fitness training is essenal. Want to play tennis? Find a game in Coach Pat’s online Player List: “Gamefinder” at customsports.biz. The list includes players of different levels that live in Pembroke Falls.

Annual Singles Tournament The annual Pembroke Falls Singles Tournament under the direcon of coach Pat Mason will be held on Saturday November 3rd at the clubhouse courts. There will be two levels, 3.0 and above and the 4.0 and above. Start me will be 8:00 a.m. There is no entry fee and the tournament is limited to Pembroke Pines residents only. Finals will be played on Sunday morning. Deadline to register with Coach Pat or Coach Anita is October 31st. Coach Pat is offering a Fall Men’s Single Flex League to be played through November 30th. Tennis Programs For more informaon on youth, teen & adult tennis programs, CALL our Pembroke Falls resident coaches Pat & Anita Mason at 954 -431-0690 and 954-260-0938. The following are some acvies available through them:  Half day School Break Tennis Camps  Adult Tennis Leagues, Clinics & Lessons  7 Levels of Play: Youth & Teen Leagues - Tiny Tots (3 ½ -5), Scoop-It-Up (6-8), Rallyball (911) and Junior Development (12 & up)  Youth Tennis Clinic - Saturday 9:00 - 9:45am, ages 6-12, drop -ins welcome  High Performance Tennis Training 1,2,3 (teens & youth) for compeon  Tennis Condioning Classes

TECH STUFF

Clocky, the Original Runaway Alarm Clock on Wheels, (Loud Heavy Sleepers)

CLOCKY REALLY DOES RUN AWAY: Clocky is the fun and crazy alarm clock on wheels. He jumps from a 3-foot high nightstand, and then off he runs in different directions every day, bumping into objects, changing direction again, and beeping until you wake up, get out of bed and turn him off. Works on carpet or wood. CUSTOMIZE YOUR SNOOZE TIME: You can set your own snooze time and control how long your snooze lasts. The next time you hit snooze, Clocky will roll into action. Don't want to snooze at all... You can disable the snooze completely and when your alarm goes off, Clocky will waste no time leaping into action forcing you to get up and out of bed. LOUD ALARM CLOCK FOR HEAVY SLEEPERS: When we say loud, we mean loud. Clocky's fun and unique alarm is extra loud. The beeping R2D2 like robotic sound is hard to miss and impossible to sleep through. Our customers tell us that Clocky can wake even the heaviest of sleepers. ABUSE THE SNOOZE OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO DOES: Clocky is for everyone and anyone who needs to wake up in the morning. Clocky wakes people up around the world, from young kids to college students to working professionals. Clocky is perfect for anyone who has trouble waking up in the morning or just needs a little (or a lot) of help getting out of bed.

GET A GRIP ON YOUR JAR!

Whether it’s holding it under water or leaving it upside down for 10 seconds, it seems like everybody has their own secret (and usually ineffective) way to open a jar. Well, toss your mama’s trick in the trash because now there’s one surefire way to get it open each time! It’s called Zip-Eat and it gives your muscles and grips the extra oomph they need. Made of a flexible, gripping material and equipped with a unique zipper-lock mechanism, it can clasp on to any size jar lid. Simple affix it to the lid, tighten it up, and twist! The only downside is that you won’t be able to look like a tough guy because significant other will be able to do it himself or herself! Designers: Lior Rokah-Kor & Tali Deutsch for OTOTO

THE BREEZEYE GUIDES YOU INTO PERFECTLY APPLYING YOUR EYEDROPS! The Breezeye has a unique and innovative way of guiding a user into applying eye drops perfectly every single time. What the Breezeye does is notice a key failure point that standard eye drop bottles miss. When you’re putting drops in your eye, your eye’s reflexes are usually on high-alert, given that a foreign substance is entering it. Holding a bottle directly above said eye gets your eye blinking and you flinching involuntarily, and the fact that the bottle is suspended in mid-air makes aiming very difficult. The Breezeye’s unique design lets it rest on the bridge of your nose. The design of the bottle allows it to align itself with your eye, while the fact that it’s resting on your nose means the bottle is far steadier. You eventually apply the drops by squeezing the opposite end of the bottle that’s directly above your other eye, allowing you to see how hard you’re pressing the bottle, while also cleverly distracting you from the reflex action of blinking right before the drops fall! Designer: Weinan Yang
